FROM THE EDITOR: It’s that time of year again, when people get together to love each other or to make a mockery of the Valentine’s Day holiday all together. Romance is in the air, and we’ve got the guide to get you going. This month, look for some of Reno’s oldies but goodies – Cantina los Tres Hombres, Great Basin Brewery, and Recycled Records – and learn about some new businesses – Plum Good, Olive & LoLo’s. Meet new band Big Remote and find out about a hip hop documentary that is soon to sweep the nation.

Cantina Los Tres Hombres 926 Victorian Ave. | Sparks - 775.356.6262 - www.cantinasparks.com Summertime dances through Victorian Square’s long evenings to undertones of warm music while crowds swarm local farmers’ booths piled with fresh produce. The sun stays up later than a disobedient child at bedtime and casts its slender rays on smooth skin and laughter. Then the sun sets like my reminiscence, and it’s February. Victorian Square is specked with snow and Aschley and I, bundled in sweaters and scarves, enter Cantina Los Tres Hombres. In those hot summer memories, I see these seemingly hundreds of tables packed, a band blaring on stage, and margaritas being distributed by the tray load. But today, it’s mid-after-

noon. Quiet. The Cantina is impeccably clean, tables orderly, Bob FM, or an equivalent, plays in the upper reaches of my consciousness. Angela, our server, greets us and we take a large booth. The day’s special is Mesquite Grilled Mahi Mahi with a Tequila Lime Sauce

($11.99). We are brought complementary chips and salsa. Behind our table a leopard stares at me from deep within a green glass mural. This month marks the two-year anniversary of Cantina Los Tres Hombres ownership for Justin Quinton and Shawn Plunket. The entrepreneurial focus is on entertainment and providing value to the customer. These factors keep business up and diners happy through Nevada’s long winter. In the years since their purchase, the duo has seen a substantial increase in sales, due to (I would surmise) exactly the value and entertainment their business provides. Value means multiple things here. It may be the $1 Mexican beers all night long on Wednesday or the all-you-can-eat tacos every Tuesday for $7.99. But value also means

providing excellent food, service, and musical entertainment for a quality experience. I order the Pablo ($9.99), which is “special carnitas (sweet roast pork) rolled with rice and beans in a flour tortilla, topped with carnitas salsa and melted jack cheese.” Aschley opts for the Leah ($9.99), a similar burrito, but with shredded chicken and enchilada sauce. Each comes beautifully presented with a dollop of sour cream (guacamole is extra). The carnitas is a wonderful blend of spicy and sweet, and the salsa topping adds just enough moisture to keep me eating practically nonstop. Alongside the expected Mexican fare, the menu also offers expansive seafood options such as paella ($14.99) and calamari steak ($12.99). Continued in pg 4

Special Offers: Taco tuesdays $7.99 ALL YOU CAN EAT tacos!

The taco madness starts at lunchtime and runs all day until we run out of taco shells (it hasn’t happened yet, so bring your hungry friends!). ___________ Wednesday nights

Happy hour starts as I scrape my plate clean. More patrons shuffle into the Cantina. When the dark completely douses Sparks, the Friday night music will start. Live music is just one more valuable factor the Cantina has implemented. Acoustic acts take the stage Tuesday through Thursday, and bands perform most Friday and Saturday nights. Wednesdays after 8, tables are cleared and danc-

ing couples can swing across the floor. This month the Cantina features the folksy blues of Whitney Myer and singer/songwriter Kate Cotter on February 19, plus Lake Tahoe artist Neva will perform on February 26. Text by Nathan Slinker Photos by Arturo Torres

Plum Good Eats 530 W. Plumb Ln, Suite C | Reno - 775.826.7586 - http://plumgoodeats.com Nestled in the heart of the Plumgate Shopping Center on Plumb and Arlington is Plum Good Eats - Reno’s newest, freshest dining experience. Serving tasty soups, crisp salads, and delicious frozen yogurt, Plum Good Eats serves up something for every person and every meal. Owners Steve and Margaret Suda began looking into investment opportunities last year when Steve’s employer, IGT, began offering buyouts. They explored many opportunities and locations in Nevada and California before forging ahead with their current location. As part of their dream, the Sudas sought to build a gathering place and Renoites could meet for business or pleasure that wasn’t just another bar or coffee shop. From the comfortable couches to the free wi-fi and accessible power outlets, this is an office away from the office. A clean, simplistic design and a sophisticated color-scape match perfectly with the wonderful food, all made fresh from recipes by Plum Good’s menu designer and chef, Beatrice Muller. The entire store is a labor of love: Muller is a longtime friend of the Sudas, their daughter Nicole helps with every detail, the decor is by local artist Kendall Knowles, and the entire staff is made up of friends and family. The tagline boasts “Soups, Salads, and Swirls,” but the menu also features classic 6 www.renopassport.com

combinations that will satisfy the healthiest appetite and includes creative kids meals that are healthy enough to please the most nutrition-conscious parent. Soups rotate frequently, the salads are 100% made to order, and the self-serve frozen yogurt, charged by weight, means the possibilities are customizable and endless. In addition to their tagline fare, the restaurant offers baklava (a sweet pastry), sarma (stuffed grape leaves), and cheese boereg (phyllo layered with cheese) – recipes from Margaret’s Armenian heritage that are featured under the Plum Bites portion of the menu. Since their December 28th, 2009 opening, Plum Good Eats has already found regular fans who come in to enjoy a salad topped with the signature Plum Vinegrette or a bowl of

potato corn chowder with applewood smoked bacon. Plum Good is also a great place to stop for a healthy snack any time of day, with regular and fruit frozen yogurts complimented by healthy granola or fruit topping options. Great care has been taken to make Plum Good a friendly and inviting place to bring a date or the whole family. From the second you walk in, you will be greeted by smiling faces and warm aromas. To see all the tempting menu options, visit http://plumgoodeats.com or follow them on Twitter @plumgoodeats for the scoop on daily specials. Text by Becca Donato-Hardie Photos by Arturo Torres

Dorado Confections 1296 E. Plumb Ln | Reno - 775.826.2888 - http://www.doradoconfections.com/ Dorado Confections is a sweet addition to Airport Square on E. Plumb Lane near Harvard Way. Open for just over a year, this artisan chocolate store has already won Reno over. Owner Ken Kossoudji learned the delicate art of chocolate artistry from his father, and then went on to study the discipline in Paris. Dorado Confections offers two different product lines of chocolate: American classic and the Signature D artisan line. The American Classics line includes American-style chocolate varieties, and the Signature D line is “European in style, much more about variety.” Kossoudji employs the French way of making chocolates, and judging from the sumptuous smells emanating from the back of the store, both he and the French share a marvelous secret. Between the Reno store and his shop in Grass Valley, California, Kossoudji estimates that he creates around twenty thousand pieces of chocolate every day. Each one is a 8 www.renopassport.com

tantalizing and visual work of art. From some of the exotic ingredients that he uses, it sounds like there’s a bit of culinary alchemy to being a chocolatier: Tahitian vanilla bean seeds and French lavender honey are two of the subtle, rare flavors that you can find in his extensive, mouth-watering menu. Chocolate is an affordable luxury and a tasty way to tell someone that you care. According to Kossoudji, you can also tell them that you care about their health. For your cardiovascular system, “Chocolate is about the best thing you can do.” It’s also high in antioxidants and for some, a natural alternative to antidepressants. Now, you can find the modern incarnation of this ancient treat right here in town! Stop by and immerse yourself in Dorado’s world of gourmet confections, and try their espresso Vivace for a truly delectable desert experience. Text by Nicole Seaton Photos by Arturo Torres

Great Basin Brewery 846 Victorian Avenue | Sparks 775.355.7711 - www.greatbasinbrewingco.com Located at the heart of downtown Sparks, Great Basin Brewery has been serving our community with award-winning beers for over 15 years. It has become a staple for great beer, food, and music in Reno/Sparks. If you’re not familiar with the beers offered here, they have just about any flavor of delicious microbrews you can imagine. They’re known for their Bitchin’ Berry, a crisp and tasty raspberry beer, their popular “Ichthyosaur” (the Nevada State Fossil) India Pale Ale, and their Chilibeso, a pilsner beer with a kiss of Jalapeno and three times gold medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival. At anytime of the year, they have four flagship beers and four to six seasonal brew-master specials. So, you are sure to find a beer that will hit the spot whatever your mood. Great Basin has a loyal group of Reno and Sparks patrons who flock for Tightwad Tuesday, where most pints are $2.50 all day and all night. Does Valentine’s Day Always Have to Suck? If you’re a vampire, then you sure hope so. For far too long, Valentine’s Day has been one of the most miserable holidays on the calendar, but last year, that started to change. This year, it’s going to be even better. On Saturday, February 13, downtown Reno will become host to the second annual Valentine’s Vampire Crawl, with thousands of costumed bar crawlers throwing on their fangs and sinking their teeth into a night of drink specials and great times. According to event organizer Ed Adkins, who also runs the Reno Zombie Crawl, the vampire crawl was developed as a way to take a holiday that no one really likes and make it fun.

12 www.renopassport.com

“Every year, I hear people complaining that Valentine’s Day is their least favorite holiday because of all the pressure to make it special, the focus on cutesy hearts, and the general feeling of missed expectations,” says Adkins. “So I figured, let’s take it back.” As a result, the Vampire Crawl was born, and everyone celebrates the edgier side of romance. “No one finds candy hearts and frilly cards sexy, but everyone wants a vampire,” says Adkins. Starting at 8pm on the Feb 13, crawlers are instructed to begin at Amendment 21 to purchase their crawl cup and map. They then can move on to any of the 20 bars that will

be participating. On the crawl, participants will enjoy $2 and $3 specials on a variety of drinks, including various beers, Barefoot Wine, New Amsterdam Gin, and others. Aside from just having fun, Adkins says that a portion of the proceeds from the crawl will be donated to the American Heart Association. “Since February is Heart Month, we decided that the AHA was a perfect charity to work with on the crawl. Also, it turns out there are no organizations that actively help vampires.” For costume ideas, Adkins says that he is talking some area shops into stocking up on vampire teeth and makeup, and also suggests looking around downtown shops for vintage clothes. “Junkee is always a great shop to find vintage clothes, while the Melting Pot is sure to have some really interesting alternatives, and

the Chocolate Walrus is always great for the sexier look,” says Adkins. A limited number of VIP packages will be sold for the night of the crawl that will include an exclusive vampire dinner and burlesque show held at 6pm, drink tickets, and a limo ride home. For more information on the crawl, go to www.renobarcrawls.com or look on the Passport events section. Also, Adkins says that anyone who RSVPs on Facebook will be kept up to date on new bars joining the lineup, what drink s specials will be offered at each bar and any entertainment or contests that are being scheduled for the evening. Legends Grill Sports & Spirits 6015 S. Virginia St. | Reno - 775.853.5550 Four long-time friends who went to college together, traveled to Europe together, and worked together now own a number of successful businesses together. Mike Connolly, Zack Cage, Charlie Cage, and Chris Kahl are the owners of Legends Grill Sports and Spirits, Sierra Taphouse, and Ole Bridge Pub. The idea of the four friends starting a business together had been bouncing around for a while, and when they returned to the U.S. after spending six months in Italy, they started looking for opportunities. Their first venture materialized in 2006 when they bought Legends Grill Sport & Spirits on S. Virginia next to Whole Foods. They completely reworked the menu, which now features an expansive offering of breakfast, lunch, and dinner fare, including world class burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, hot and cold sandwiches, wraps and a handful of south-ofthe-border specialties. Legends is big on specials too. On Mondays, pitchers are half-priced all day, on Wednesdays from 5-9pm, it’s all-you-caneat chicken wings (all flavors and hotness), and on Thursdays, a burger and a beer is only $5.00. Their daily happy hour (which is really three hours) is from 3-6pm with half Continued in pg 16 14 www.renopassport.com

off all wine and their 16 beers on tap. True to its name, Legends is a sports bar with a lot of memorabilia – an autographed Yankees jersey, 49er plaques and photos, University of Nevada items, baseball bats etc. And to watch the games, they have 25 big screen HDTVs everywhere. And like any self respecting sports bar, they have bartop gaming as well. About six months after opening Legends, a couple of the partners were down on the Riverwalk behind Java Jungle and noticed that the space that used to be a wedding chapel was vacant. After a little investigation, Sierra Taphouse was born. One of its claims to fame is the Wednesday Special of a tasty personal pizza from Java Jungle and a beer for only seven bucks. Their Tuesday night trivia contest is pretty popular too. The most recent foray for the four entrepreneurs is the opening of Ole Bridge Pub on the ground 16 www.renopassport.com

floor of the luxurious Paladio condo complex downtown on the river. Opened in fall of 2009, this is a true Irish/English pub in the making. Legends, Sierra Taphouse, and Old Bridge Pub will be having Super Bowl parties on Sunday, February 7, 2010. A party badge will get you lots of food and drink specials and free transportation between the three locations. So whether you’re hanging out downtown or you’re south of town, one of their three establishments is sure to whet your whistle and satisfy those hunger pangs! Text and photos by Bob Carnahan

Big Remote Knowing the Unknown You might not necessarily know the local band Big Remote, but I bet you know one if not all the guys within the band for other reasons. For example how could you not know Eric Foreman (bass, vocals)? He works at The Sticker Guy and has been on the scene making quality vinyl stickers locally since 1993. I personally loved his stint in one of my favorite defunct bands, the DeFABulators. And what about Stephen Larkins (guitar, vocals), capturing local music as a scene maker in such bands as Acrylic, The Atomiks and Jambalaya Blue? And you might have not known him in October, but you definitely got to know Don Morrison (drums, vocals) in Movember. He was partly responsible for the beloved “Save the Testes!” campaign that we all know and love: growing moustaches to promote awareness of men’s health issues. And then there’s Jon Cornell (keyboard, vocals). Okay, I don’t really know what Jon has done lately except that he’s the director of public relations for a local medical company. It sounds important though. Friends for ten years now, Big Remote has lives...the very first day we got together, been a long-awaited project. “This is really everything just clicked like magic,” John the band we’ve all been waiting for all our said proudly.

No band would say it wouldn’t be nice to make it big, but for this band, they seem to be happy just getting together and making music. Their primary focus right now is getting an EP together, so they will be going in to the studio to record this month. Stephen and Eric started writing songs in November 2008, and Jon and Don joined the band in May of 2009. My favorite part interviewing this band was obtaining the meaning behind their name. “Big Remote is about having a sense of self in a vast unknown universe,” Stephen said in a serious tone. But the real story came from Jon: “You might think it’s trying to describe our sound as large and distant, but really, someone just had a piece of consumer electronics lying around.” Influenced by the likes of Wilco, R.E.M. and the Shins, Jon states, “As much as we’d like to play the ‘string nineteen adjectives together’ game, we’ll just call ourselves indie rock.” Eric chimes in, “…with a bit of Americana.” And Stephen rounding the description out, “…with some pop sensibility.” The personalities and community involvement of the members of Big Remote are just the tip of the iceberg with these guys. Be sure to check them out on MySpace and Facebook and catch them live February 20th at the Zephyr Lounge. Text by Melanie Flores Photos provided by band 24 www.renopassport.com

Recycled Records 3344 Kietzke Ln | Reno - 775.826.4119 - http://www.recrecreno.com/ Still Doesn’t Suck

Founded in 1980, Recycled Records is a staple for music in Reno. Previously located on S. Virginia St., they have moved to a new location in the Kietzke Center next to Swensen’s and Supercuts. Owner Paul Doege has been selling used music for 30 years and is referred to as “the big cheese” and the “head honcho.” With an impressive collection of records, tapes, CDs, movies, and other stuff – including turntables, record supplies, buttons, stickers, and more – Recycled Records is the place for music in Reno. This giant used-music store is a Reno landmark with floor-to-ceiling CD racks lining the walls and huge CD bins throughout the store. With spine-out CD shelving categorized by musical genre, you’ll easily find whatever it is you may be looking for. New releases and items deemed as “hot” are at the counter, so be sure to check there first to see what’s new. Continued in pg 28 26 www.renopassport.com

Recycled Records also has a big vinyl section and a smaller cassette section within the store. Before you buy, you can listen to everything to make sure it’s what you want. The knowledgeable staff – including Eric Jacobson (at RR for 24 years) and Mike Ward (there for 22 years) – is helpful and always willing to be of musical assistance or turn you on to stuff you’ve never heard of. If you’re looking to sell, Recycled Records will give you cash or store credit (a better deal) for your used music, but if they don’t want it, they’ll bury it for you.

They also sell tickets to many shows and venues – including Reno’s newest venue, Knitting Factory – at their shop. Tickets are cheapest when purchased ahead of time and with cash. A musical resource in Reno that everyone needs to experience still holds true to their commercial jingle: Recycled Records doesn’t suck. Text by Michelle Montoya Photos by Arturo Torres

Bohemian to Bling Olive & LoLo’s 4840 Vista Blvd, Ste 106 | Sparks - 775.626.1166 For five years, Sparks has been host to the newest, HAUTE-est local clothing store. Olive & LoLo’s, located in the Vista Village shopping center, is a unique boutique named for the daughters of the two owners and is stocked full of today’s top clothing lines. Kristin Spracklin and Cricket Dundas created the store not only out of their love of fashion, but out of a desire to bring high end shopping and fashion to Sparks. Both women were inspired by the success and hard work of other local stores and chose the location in Spanish Springs to be close to their homes and the

growing community- allowing their friends and neighbors to shop without driving into Reno. The store is manned at any point in time by Shiloh, daughter of owner Kristin, or coowner Cricket. These two ladies work perfectly together to bring in all the latest fashions and styles from Juicy Couture, Reno eNVy, True Religion, Mur, Tea Party, and Brighton. From bohemian to bling, lounge wear to outerwear, the beautifullydesigned store is well stocked with jeans, tops, dresses, purses, belts, and jewelry for every season and every style.

As buyers, Shiloh and Cricket are a perfect team whose opposing styles and preferences complement each other and provide for a plethora of options. Styles range from vintage, urban and studded to chic, embroidered and covered in rhinestones. Best of all, these high quality goods don’t mean high dollars. In their mission to outfit the town, Olive & LoLo’s brought in brands from all price ranges, so you can be guaranteed to find something within your budget. You can even follow them on Facebook for the scoop on special deals. Keeping with the community and local tradition, the store has a consignment section where you can sell your gently–loved, highend fashions and accessories. The section also features creations such as jewelry by local talents. If they love it, they’ll stock it. Olive & LoLo’s is also your place for gifts and gift cards. They take great pride in their commitment to quality goods and customer service and make it a mission to get in special orders for their customers for a special day or any day. Amazing service is part of what brings customers back- patrons of Pinocchio’s or the Spa next door come in frequently to browse and buy while waiting for a table or their color to set. Shiloh enjoys making personal connections with each guest, ensuring a great relationship and the highest level of satisfaction. The friendly, fun staff is always ready to share a great story to go with their great clothing. Text by Becca Donato-Hardie Photos by Arturo Torres

Tune in, Zone out February is the month where we exhale, put away the very last festive trappings, and anxiously await the spring. Since it’s also one of the drabber and greyer months in Reno, it is the perfect time to treat yourself or a loved one to a beneficial spa treatment. Tuning Fork Therapy is a lot more peaceful and tranquilizing than it sounds- and don’t worry, no one is going to stick you with a fork. The instruments actually look nothing like eating utensils, and they don’t touch you at all. They just… ring. If you suffer from headache, insomnia and depression, this may be the beneficial therapy for you. The treatment can be employed alone or in conjunction with massage. Certified Massage Therapist and Tuning Fork Therapy Practitioner Kim Malfa offers this remedy at the Del Rio Building suite #104 on 210 Marsh Ave. Created in 1711 by an Englishman named John Shore, the tunes were later refined by brothers Arden and Jack Wilken, who invented the inner sound tuning forks. After a one-hour treatment, you feel rested and calm yet energetic - centered might be the best way to describe the feeling after being “tuned.” By making various-sized tuning forks or wands chime different tones in a defined pattern, the body is then healed from a number of maladies. 32 www.renopassport.com

“The cerebral spinal fluid is the key to what makes the sound therapy work,” explained Malfa, “It’s fluid. Sound travels ten times faster through fluid than air.” Malfa describes the healing process of the forks as expansion and contraction, much like the ocean. “People tell me they feel like they’re on a dinghy in a harbor,” laughed Malfa. Text by Nicole Seaton

Matt Reyes Silence Is Sound

34 www.renopassport.com

My inspiration for film making is human culture and exposing different aspects of it to others.

Matt Reyes has been into hip hop for about 14 years. When he and some friends established Bay Root Productions in Reno, it was initially to make hip hop beats, but their music appeals to a greater audience. Though Reyes never went to film school or receive any other formal training for film making, he decided to make a documentary, Silence Is Sound, in December of 2008. “It was going to be my first feature length, and I read somewhere that for your first film, you should make the film you have always wanted to make because once you get going in film making you may never have a chance to make the film you have always wanted to make,” says Reyes. The film is centered on Reno’s Bay Root Productions and chronicles the struggles of being an independent artist, from out-ofpocket expenses to production and all the obstacles that stand in the way of people trying to pursue their dreams. Reyes himself has been struggling to pursue his dreams, but he has a number of people who have influenced and supported him along the way.

36 www.renopassport.com

“There are numerous artists, musicians, filmmakers, and philosophers that influence me creatively and spiritually,” says Reyes. “But my inspiration for film making is human culture and exposing different aspects of it to others. I love human culture – like music, art, clothing, food, thought, religion, language – and to be able to share what’s out there in the world with everyone is my focus.” Because Silence Is Sound has not yet been officially released, there isn’t any place that it can be viewed currently. Reyes may distribute it online through Bay Root Productions’ website (http:// www.bayroot.com). Reyes will be submitting his documentary into the Reno Film Festival and is looking into submitting it to other festivals that celebrate the style and subject that Silence Is Sound offers.
