welcome to offbeat

It’s time to go off the beaten path! Yes, there are still discoveries to be made. There are new, unknown, unheralded bands to see before they blow up and have their songs blasting in every ear bud, before they’re headlining every festival and are selling out every venue from Tokyo to Tulsa. There are new songs to hear, in places you’ve never heard them. There’s the food you’ve never had from the chef of that one restaurant you’ve been meaning to try. I mean, you never even knew half these bands and restaurants and venues and artists were even here in the Biggest Little City. That’s the spirit of the Off Beat Arts & Music Festival. It’s a citywide, multi-venue festival that’s all about discovering the amazing new things being created right here in Reno – music, food, art and more. Performances are at a mix of venues from small bars to large theaters, from art galleries to restaurants and even shops, creating a “festival crawl” where you can see a number of bands at different venues around the core of Reno. Go off the beaten path and make some new discoveries.

bands, djs & songwriters The Off Beat Festival bill is all killer and no filler, with a genre-blurring assemblage of locals, indie label artists, future household names and sleepers, ready to rock the stage. Add to that, a stellar list of electrifying national touring acts and some of the music industry’s brightest young stars, and we believe we’ve struck a chord that will thrill audiences, and deliver a message to the world that the Off Beat Festival has arrived! This is your chance to see and listen to over 100 performances by bands, DJs and songwriters, performing on 15 different stages at venues simultaneously around downtown Reno. See you at the show!

The Polish Ambassador The Polish Ambassador (real name David Sugalski) is raising the bar for what it means to be a professionally touring musician. Sure, the electronic musician lays claim to producing the sweetest beats this side of the Milky Way Galaxy, but the world’s funkiest diplomat is also using his popularity to steer the millennial generation toward a nourishing and sustainable way of relating with art, community and the planet. From birthing the Permaculture Action Movement (a movement where the energy of show/festival goers is catalyzed into community action), to creating a program where nutritious beverage options are available at music venues on a routed TPA tour, the ambassador is using his clout to make real, tangible change, and along the way inspiring hundreds of thousands.

The veils The Veils are a London-based indie/alternative band fronted by lead singer and songwriter Finn Andrews. They are known for their chaotic and highly cathartic live performances and Finn’s often scarily possessed stage presence. Head of Rough Trade Records Geoff Travis has referred to Finn as “a young but maturing real artist in the vein of Nick Cave and David Bowie

Skratch bastid Over the past 15 years, Canada’s own Skratch Bastid has been spreading his skills and name around the world, one sweaty crowd at a time. What first started at DJ competitions like DMC, ITF, and Scribble Jam where he became a certified entertainer and show favorite has now affected the four corners of the globe, establishing him as a “DJ’s DJ” and a true master of the craft recognized by the best in the game.

The last internationale Founded by NYC natives Delila Paz & Edgey Pires, TLI quickly forged a reputation for poetic, socially conscious songs & explosive live performances… “The Last Internationale are one of my favorites in the next wave of rebel rockers. They’re raw and real and mix East Village rock sensibilities with Battleship Potemkin firepower” – Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, SSSC, The Nightwatchman).

The Main Squeeze Seamlessly blending funk, soul and rock ‘n’ roll, The Main Squeeze promises to keep your body moving with their infectious, feel-good musical gumbo. The Chicago-based band has been winning fans over with their unique musical blend since their formation a few years ago. In the five years since the band’s inception, The Main Squeeze has attracted a remarkably loyal and ever growing national fan base. The rabid following is no surprise as the band boasts a unique sound that is equal parts soul, funk and rock ‘n’ roll – think Stevie Wonder meets Red Hot Chili Peppers. Further, their high-energy live shows that showcase each member’s virtuosic talent — with soulful vocals, intricate jams, tight grooves and powerful solos — always leave their audiences awestruck.

con brio Formed in 2013, Con Brio is the offspring of seven musicians with diverse backgrounds but a shared love for the vibrant Bay Area funk and psychedelicsoul sound pioneered by groups like Sly & the Family Stone. By 2015, when the band self-produced their debut EP, Kiss the Sun, Con Brio had already become a West Coast institution on the strength of their magnetic live show, with McCarter’s swiveling hips, splits and backflips earning him frequent comparisons to a young Michael Jackson or James Brown. After a busy 2015 spent touring the U.S. and Europe, playing alongside veterans Galactic and Fishbone, and racking up critical acclaim on proving grounds like Austin City Limits — where PopMatters declared Con Brio “the best new live band in America” — they headed home to parlay their momentum, chemistry and tight live sound into a full-length record.

the blank tapes THE BLANK TAPES is the moniker of Los Angeles based multi-instrumentalist, Matt Adams, who has produced over a dozen albums of 1960’s inspired surf-pop, folk-rock & soul on Volcom, Burger Records, Antenna Farm, White Noise, and others. Their latest being the psychedelic stoner nugget collection “Geodesic Dome Piece” on Royal Oakie. Along with his band mates, The Blank Tapes have toured throughout America, Brazil, Europe, & Japan.

the soft white sixties Five years together, and the members of The Soft White Sixties have rarely sat still. They’ve lived much of their life in a 15-passenger van, traversing the country, whipping up new riffs, new rhythms, new lyrics and then, almost immediately, breaking them out onstage. For these hard-working musicians, it was simply a way of life.

citizen zero When done honestly, rock ‘n’ roll can stick with you for a lifetime. It rides shotgun for the whole way, soundtracking those big moments and memories. Once you hear a Citizen Zero song, you remember it. The Detroit rock outfit—Josh LeMay [vocals], Sammy Boller [lead guitar], John Dudley [drums], and Sam Collins [bass]—deliver arena-sized anthems fueled by intricate musicianship on their full-length debut album, State of Mind [Wind-up Records]. Striking a balance between edgy grunge attitude a la Stone Temple Pilots and bluesy alternative expanse reminiscent of Kings of Leon, their knack for a hook immediately resonated with a growing national fan base.

Tango alpha tango Portland’s Tango Alpha Tango is best experienced amid a crowded room of sweaty guitar junkies. Logically, then, a well-mixed live album is the next greatest thing. Captured last year at local recording space Banana Stand, the performance delivered by the quartet tackles a sprawling beast in 12 songs. From the first bluesy electric-guitar riff in “Kill & Haight” to the gritty energy of “Black Cloud,” the record not only translates frontman Nathan Trueb’s ability to write a good tune and dominate a guitar neck, but also the band’s flawless fusion of blues and rock with funky bass lines and psychedelic keys.

jelly bread Over a few short years of touring, Jelly Bread has risen from Reno/Lake Tahoe area favorites into a powerhouse quintet with a high-energy calling card that delivers a high-energy, chameleonic playlist all over the United States. Jelly Bread’s distinct style is identified by a blend of desert twang meeting the urban tones of funk and rock. Exceptional songwriting and storytelling interlaced with four part harmonies, intricate “in-the-pocket” drum and bass grooves, swampy lap steel guitar, dirt under the fingernails guitar licks, tasty talkbox, “take-’em-to-church” organ come together into a sound that is downright appetizing.

the grizzled mighty The Grizzled Mighty was formed in the fiery belly of an active volcano. From the center of the Earth they erupted, spewed forth like a flaming phoenix. Ryan rose from the ashes of destruction, guitar in hand, bringing the erotic riffs of Hades to the trembling surface. Faustine, agent of evil and harbinger of chaos, descended swiftly as a rain of fire, striking the roiling bedrock like the Hammer of Thor. Together they create a force that rips the very fabric of space and time. There is no escaping The Grizzled Mighty.

Levitation room Their decidedly hallucinogenic jams whisper and hum the same gentle refrains of their summer of love influences, conjuring up the cognitive imagery of sunny days at the park, spent with friends in a euphoric haze along with lyrics ad sonic mediations on life, love and self-awareness.

the seshen The Seshen is a San Francisco Bay Area-based seven-piece led by singer/lyricist Lalin St. Juste and bassist/producer Akiyoshi Ehara. Their forward-thinking sound combines synthesizers, drum machines, live percussion, and entrancing harmonies to create an unmistakable fusion of R&B, synth-pop, and electronic music. St. Juste and Ehara are joined by five remarkable bandmates to create their multidimensional music: vocalist Kasha Rockland, drummer Chris Thalmann, keyboard/synth player Mahesh Rao, percussionist Mirza Kopelman, and sampler Kumar Butler.

the easy leaves The Easy Leaves are very top of the Country heap here in San Francisco, headlining and filling big rooms (Great American Music Hall, The Independent, Mystic Theatre), main stage set at last year’s Outside Lands Festival (Willie Nelson told them ‘We should play together again’!), CMT premieres their videos … But more to the point, they write, record, and perform incredible songs.

Annie girl & the flight Annie Girl and The Flight’s intense, psychedelic live performances of “crushing high-voltage lullabies” (The Bay Bridged) have made a mark on the San Francisco rock scene, where they’ve been featured as one of the San Francisco Bay Guardian’s Artists On The Rise, DoTheBay. com’s Bae of the Week, and Deli Magazine’s Artist of the Month. From their self-titled hypnotic folk debut, which was MOJO Magazine’s album of the month, the band evolved into a louder, faster art rock incarnation punctuated by garage rhythms. For its marriage of memorable guitar riffs and dreamy vocals, their EP Bodies was chosen as one of SF Weekly’s Top Bay Area Albums of 2015. The same year, Annie Girl and The Flight were hand picked by Laura Jane Grace to support punk legends Against Me! on a 28-city North American tour.

Whether it is on a huge stage fully blown, a high energy rock show or a more intimate unplugged setting. We bring an original approach to finding places to sing and play our hearts and souls out.

David Dondero Few songwriters have experienced and expressed the sinking depths and uplifting optimism of humanity like David Dondero, and his ability to shine a light on the human condition (his own included) is inspiring. Dondero is best known for his narrative tales of America. Having spent most of his life on the road, Dave uses his staggering lyrical talent to paint tales of life in the US of A through clever word play and sarcastic humor (as represented in the album title) about some of life’s most sensitive subjects.

Instead, they manage to take the sound and build on it with their own touch of fuzzed-out, stoner blues madness. WEEED puts blues, early doom, riffed-out heavy metal, and psychedelic jam together with an overwhelming sense of originality and you can tell they fucking love what they do.
