DANCE Text Lila Reeves-Hampton
that Carroll found what had been missing in her life: the freedom to move and be present and create a community through the modality of free-form dance. Ecstatic Dance is a replacement or addition to Sunday church, with weekly dances starting at 9:30 and lasting until 12:30. Each dance starts with a 45-minute warm-up, which is usually yoga led by a local instructor. At 10:30 the DJ starts and takes everyone on a two-hour journey through music; people are free to move their bodies in whatever way feels right to them. Then the DJ takes dancers into a 10 to 15 minute sound healing.
Ecstatic Energy Dance Comes to Reno Donna Carroll had the American dream. She was 29, living in Columbus, Ohio, married to an accountant and designing jeans for a living. One day at a friend’s house, Carroll found herself agonizing for hours over which shade of yellow paint was the best for her kitchen. It was at that time that Carroll realized the white picket fence wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Carroll uprooted her entire life, got a divorce and went west--so far west that she ended up on The Big Island of Hawai’i taking a threemonth yoga teacher training course, relishing in the absence of structure and monotony in her daily life. “On the first Sunday there I walked into something that would completely change the trajectory of my life, and those of many others,” said Carroll. It was then, at her first experience of Ecstatic Dance,
28 Reno Tahoe Tonight
Now almost a decade later, Carroll runs the largest Ecstatic Dance practice in the world in Oakland, California. She holds her Sunday dances in a beautiful, bright, warehouse space and accommodates between 300 and 400 dancers each week. Over the years, Carroll has been an integral part of expanding Ecstatic Dance and hosted an Ecstatic Dance leadership training in Oakland in July of 2016. Fortunately for Reno, locals Alicia Kelly and Sebastian Elcano attended the leadership training in hopes of eventually bringing Ecstatic Dance to Reno. “[Donna Carroll’s] charisma, her fire, her passion for Ecstatic Dance is amazing. It’s infectious,” says Elcano, “She was one of the many other leaders like that, and we came back just lit on fire and we were ready to start this in Reno.” Kelly and Elcano catalyzed this idea while working together at GreatFull Gardens in Midtown. Kelly exudes warmth when she greets you; she’s down to earth and her coolness level is through the roof. Elcano radiates energy and his favorite thing to do is simply be present in the moment. Together they are a pair of charismatic, galactic warriors with a fierce passion for dance. After Kelly and Elcano attended the training in Oakland, everything started to fall into place in Reno. They first secured their dance space at Starlite Dance Studio, off of South McCarran near Longley Lane and started reaching out to DJs and friends to help get the ball rolling. The first Ecstatic Dance in Reno was January 8, 2017. Seems pretty frightening, right? But the beauty lies in the freedom that is an Ecstatic Dance practice. “Movements are more important than words, because it doesn’t matter if you know how to dance, or have mad dance skills,” says Kelly. Kelly and Elcano are no strangers to the resistance many people have about dance. “Until people experience it and see its value and benefit, it is kind of hard to get people on board or to get people to come and try,” says Kelly. “Because there are so many reasons and things that we hold in
ourselves--ears and insecurities--that won’t even allow you to get there.” Kelly explains that the key is to let go of any expectations and surrender completely. “By doing that you’re like healing your body, your mind, everything and finding more space in yourself to be free and be comfortable, just to be in your true essence and your aliveness,” says Kelly. The practice itself is not only about movement and dance, but bringing communities together. There is something traditionally spiritual about Sundays, a sentiment which is present at Ecstatic Dance as community members celebrate diverse beliefs and come together each week to heal. “I don’t think we have enough places where they are non-religious or non-denominational or open to all people in this world,” said Carroll, “And it’s amazing what happens when people do bring a myriad of beliefs and we can learn from each other.” Carroll started her dance in Oakland in 2008 at the height of the greatest economic downturn since the great depression. Even now, in an age of similar national tension, people often ask Carroll how her business survived that time; the distress in people created a yearning for a place to connect with others. “When the outside world is challenging is especially when people need a place to come together,” says Carroll. A unique aspect of ecstatic dance is that it is a non-verbal and substance-free experience. When words are taken out of the equation, the veils fall down and it’s just human connection, especially when you’re dancing with someone on a regular basis. “It opens the doorway to a lot more understanding because we already have this thing in common that we like, and our differences fall away or we get curious about them,” says Carroll. “We get to bypass that logical side of the brain that just constantly wants to try to understand things and just go straight into movement, which is such a direct and powerful way to express and communicate with another human being,” says Elcano. For Elcano, that real human connection is so important. “Just recognizing another person and moving with them, there’s no need for any of those normal filters to happen. It’s just like boom, connection established. And here we are.”
For most people, dancing is something usually aided by alcohol or drugs and usually takes place in the confines of a bar, club, or once a year out on the playa. In Ecstatic Dance, the goal is to break down barriers and the discomfort people have about dancing and the idea that its only okay to dance while under the influence. “We’re trying to break free from that mold and get people to realize that dancing doesn’t always have to be something that’s subject to those [substances],” Elcano notes, “And the possibilities when people are present are limitless.” Each Ecstatic Dance practice follows a natural flow, led by the speed, style, and intensity of that week’s DJ’s music. The music incorporates different styles, texture, and energy from a variety of genres and culture. Every DJ brings their own vibes to the dance, taking dancers on a journey that starts out slow and builds into a peak before taking dancers back down into a sound healing. “Some [DJ’s] will be more focused on tribal, others on electronic, others on tropical vibes,” says Elcano, “But in general, it's a diverse selection of dance music played to take people on a conscious dance journey.” Ecstatic Dance Reno is in a prime location, with a large concentration of Ecstatic Dance DJ’s just an hour over the hill in Nevada City. Having that magnitude of talent so close allows Kelly to book a wide range of different DJs for each Sunday. Yes, Ecstatic Dance takes courage and a willingness to let the discomfort wash over you. But the result is something greater than each of us. “The biggest thing I can ask is to show up. But after that, come again. Keep coming,” says Kelly. It’s a practice more than anything, and transformation comes as dancers come back week after week. EVENT Special to Reno Tahoe Tonight
Cirque Le Noir | The Dark Side of Cirque Opens June 2 at the Eldorado with All-New Champagne Stage Seating Multimillion dollar Cirque extravaganza created by the producers of “The Illusionists”

e got to catch a sneak peek at the stunning new show coming to the Eldorado this month during their media day this spring for Cirque Le Noir and we were blown away. The performers are gorgeous and immensely talented, but beyond the eye candy, the show offers audiences an up close theater experience featuring world-class performers in a show that's like nothing they have ever seen. The producers of the Broadway smash hit “The Illusionists” and the Eldorado have teamed up to bring a multimillion dollar Cirque extravaganza to Reno this summer. Cirque Le Noir | The Dark Side of Cirque opens June 2 and runs through August 27 in the newly renovated Eldorado Theatre. For the first time ever, an in-the-round stage will take over the theatre and show attendees will have a once in a lifetime experience to sit on the stage and in the center of the action, with heart-pounding acts only inches away. Jen Dominique, the Eldorado's Director of Entertainment and Nightlife shares how the property nabbed one of the hottest shows anywhere! 30 Reno Tahoe Tonight
“We worked closely with producer Simon Painter on another successful show. He thought highly of the Eldorado and our beautiful theatre, which led him to pitch Cirque Le Noir with us. We are very fortunate to have that relationship, especially since this show has been in some of the biggest cities all over the world.” What makes Cirque Le Noir so different and exciting? Dominique explains, “The fact that we are bringing the audience on stage at an arms distance from the heart-pounding acts is one major difference over other shows, both here and around town. We are building out the stage to accommodate this in the round show and truly changing the entire experience for the audience.” Cirque Le Noir is a truly unique and electrifying experience and features the world’s greatest circus acts, aerialists and athletes. The show is carefully engineered with the deliberate intention of making the audience a part of the entertainment, bringing them physically closer to the artists than any other show. Cirque Le Noir is a theatrical experience that engages every sense and has been designed to be enjoyed by audiences young and old. The most
extraordinary cirque performers from around the world, many of them formerly from Cirque du Soleil, are the centerpiece of this production and will enthrall crowds in this spell-binding theatrical journey. With incredible demonstrations of balance, contortion, stamina and aerial artistry, the skills exhibited by the cast of Cirque Le Noir make this a show that audiences won’t want to miss. This production is surreal, beautiful, seductive and at times hilariously outrageous as it explores emotions through colors as the cast transforms from beautiful and pure white, through to the passion of red and finally culminating with the darkness of Cirque Le Noir. For the first time ever, the Eldorado is pleased to offer VIP Champagne Stage Seating, which will be available for a limited number of seats per performance and includes a glass of Eldorado private label champagne. In addition, guests of Cirque Le Noir will be among the first to see the Eldorado Theatre in its renovated state which includes an inviting refresh with gorgeous new chandeliers, carpet, lighting and reupholstered chairs. Champagne seating starts at $49.95 and standard seating starts at $29.95. Enjoy half-off an entrée at any Eldorado restaurant on the night of the show with the purchase of a full-price ticket. Visit eldoradoreno.com to purchase tickets today.
