We’ve really noticed the difference in our house: we don’t have any problems keeping it cool inside on hot days now.

CASE STUDY

With side channels that match the width of the window profiles and the subtle integration of the screen boxes, the retrofitted screens are barely noticeable.

At first sight, this recent, ultramodern, newly built villa in the leafy land scape between Mechelen and Leuven with sleek white walls and huge windows seemed to offer everything needed for a carefree and comfortable life. That’s exactly what the owners thought when they moved in seven years ago. Unfortunately, they soon realised they would have to find the right solution to keep the interior cool on hot days: those large windows might let in an abundance of daylight, but they also expose the south- facing side to the full heat of the sun. “On the top floor especially, it got too hot as soon as the sun made an appearance. I’ve got a room up there that I use for my fitness classes, and the large windows always made it tricky to keep the sun out,” one of the residents explains. The problem was just as bad in spring as it would be in summer. “The only difference was that you could open a window at that time of year to let some cool air in.” Faced with these issues, the owners set out to find a suitable solution to keep indoor temperatures down. They had already considered sunprotection screens when they built the house, but they eventually moved away from the idea as they feared such large surfaces would not be able to handle much wind. They were told the sunprotection glass would be enough to keep the sun out, but this soon turned out not to be the case, so they had to find another solution. They explored various alternatives, but they failed to be genuinely persuaded by any of the options. “Eventually, we settled on our original solution: sunprotection screens,” the owners explain. Installer Luc Boonen recalls the day the owners came to him with their request: “The only problem was the narrow window profiles of the minimal windows that help define the sleek look and feel of this house. With most existing sunprotection screens on the market,

the side channels would protrude in front of the glass, which would be a real shame with this property. L uckily, Renson® had just introduced its latest generation of windtight sunprotection screens: Fixscreen Minimal, with slimmer side channels and subtler screen boxes for windows just like these. It was as if fate was on our side.” “The fact that the side channels of the screens could be the exact same width as the window profiles was one of the factors that swayed us,” the residents recall when talking about this successful solution. “On top of that, the transition between both large windows on the ground floor and the first floor was beautifully finished with an aluminium panel in the exact same colour and plane as the lower screen box. The result is that the screen box is barely even noticeable.” After their first spring with the new system, the owners have noticed a real difference in their home: so far, they have been able to keep the top floor perfectly cool. “As soon as the sun comes through those windows, I lower the sunprotection screens. They really help to keep the interior temperature just right, even on hot summer days,” the owners explain. “And that’s before we mention the other big advantage: the screens are transparent, so our view through the windows is never interrupted.” 39

CASE STUDY

In sunny Bordeaux, life moves effortlessly between indoor and outdoor spaces. However idyllic this sounds, it does pose one great risk: interiors can often get too hot, too soon. With Renson®’s expertise in both outdoor living and sunprotection, all measures in both of these areas are perfectly aligned in this new-build villa: uniform in look and feel, but above all, providing ultimate comfort for the residents, both indoors and outdoors. Controlled indoor temperatures “Given the orientation of this house, sunprotection was absolutely essential,” the residents discovered after three months in their new home. “Even despite the fact our living room faces directly south, suitable sunprotection keeps the interior perfectly cool even on the hottest summer days. Thanks to the pergola in the garden, we can choose all year round whether to spend time indoors or outdoors, depending on which environment is most suitable at any given time of day.” “We installed pretty much every element of R enson®’s sunprotection range on this property,” installer Frederic Lacoste of Renson® ambassador Portaix Loisirs explains. “There’s a Panovista Max sunprotection screen on the sliding corner window (with a zip and without any intrusive profiles or cables in the corner, which doesn’t have a supporting post), there are Loggia sliding panels on the windows and fixed Sunclips canopies above another window.” Although these solutions differ, they all make sure in the that the sun never drives indoor temperatures into the well insulated villa to unbearable levels; instead they block the sun’s rays before they even reach the glass. The owners are delighted with the result: The main advantage is that we can open or close both the screens and the sliding panels as we wish; depending on the level of light we want to let into our home.

Comfortable outdoor living The same applies to the garden, which is a place where the owners spend a significant portion their time. To ensure they can keep enjoying their outdoor space even in a heatwave — and there have been several over the past few years — the Camargue pergola is like a gift from the gods. Thanks to the integrated screens and rotating blades, they can control shade and temperature even on the most sweltering days. The Camargue offers a way to live comfortably outdoors even in spring and autumn. The owners add that, “the Loggia sliding panels not only provide the necessary shade but also allow us extra privacy when we use the hot tub. Yet another fantastic feature!” Architect Christine Bouchard shares her view: “Right from the earliest design stages of their new home, the owners had a pool house in mind. Renson®’s Camargue patio cover with rotating blades was the perfect fit for how they imagined this space. The builders were also immediately persuaded by the various sunprotection solutions. To me, the fact that the owners felt comfortable in their new home straight away is the perfect proof that this was a successful project.”

CASE STUDY

In terms of cost and durability, ventilation louvres turned out to be the perfect way to provide extra cooling to our turbines - but they had to be burglar-resistant.

When planning its new Westeinde wind farm in Anna Paulowna (NL), wind turbine manufacturer EWT realised it needed a solution for additional heat losses in their ever more powerful wind turbines Needless to say, they soon turned to Renson®. One condition was that resistance to break-ins could not be compromised in any way by fitting ventilation louvres to the turbines. “The reason for our partnership with Renson® was an increase in the rated power of our wind turbines from 900 kW to 1 MW. In addition, the net transformer, which is usually located in an external building, was fitted inside our turbines. This caused our heat losses to double, and we had to compensate for this in an efficient manner,” EWT’s Mechanical Engineering Manager Danny Ferket explains. “We previously had a cooling system in our wind turbines, but this was no longer able to cope with the new configuration. After weighing up the various options, we eventually chose to fit ventilation louvres to create an additional inflow of cooler (outside) air. This solution offered the best balance between cost and durability.” On the flip side, ventilation louvres could potentially lower the burglar-resistance of the doors in the wind turbines. Considering the fact these turbines contain lots of metals that are attractive to thieves, this posed a real problem. “That’s why we were specifically looking for louvres that complied with burglar-resistance class

RC3 as a minimum; the same class as our doors, which are made of 8 to 12 mm of lasered stainless steel,” Danny Ferket continues. Engineers from both Renson® and EWT put their heads together to find the perfect louvres of this application. “As part of this, Renson® showed the necessary flexibility to develop louvres that met our specific (burglar resistance) requirements. Our partnership with R enson® could not have gone better, and after validation in our test turbines using CFD analyses, we gave them the green light to install the louvres at our Westeinde wind farm in Anna Paulowna. These louvres offer us extra flexibility in hotter areas, as well as the option to install an internal transformer. This has enabled us to expand our product portfolio in response to demand from the market and specific environmental requirements. The straightforward installation process also gives us the flexibility to add the louvres at the last minute if necessary,” Danny Ferket concludes.

CASE STUDY

It’s a well-known fact that natural daylight has a positive impact on recovery, rehabilitation and well-being in general - but this new build care project in Lommel was well aware that good interior air quality and pleasant temperatures also play a role. “The construction of the new Residential Care Centre started in 2016,” project manager Alain Van Gompel (Woningbouw Dockx bvba) recalls. “Midway through 2019, the project was completed.” “As the project developer, Dockx was responsible for the choice of ventilation system,” architect Robbert Harte (D&A architects) explains. A choice was made to opt for a combination of natural outdoor air supplied directly via window vents and demand-driven ventilation that removes polluted indoor air via Renson®’s Health connectors. Renson® developed this smart ventilation solution, which uses just a single ventilation extraction point per room, specifically for residential care centres and hospitals. Like a decentralised valve, Health connector controls the ventilation level per room based on the integrated moisture, VOC and/or CO2 sensors.

External solar shading for pleasant indoor temperatures Aside from healthy indoor air, Renson® also contributed to a comfortable interior with its Fixscreen sunprotection screens. By blocking the sun before it can even reach the glass, Fixscreen makes it possible to keep temperatures under control even on the hottest summer days. “At the same time, the screens do not block the outside view,” Alain Van Gompel adds. “Of course, that’s yet another bonus for the residents.” Honing in on the finish of the sunprotection screens, Robbert Harte was extremely impressed by the slender screen boxes and side channels typical of Renson®’s Fixscreens.

CASE STUDY

The owners of this contemporary new-build home in Ostend were closely involved in its design. To add to the white decorative plaster on their home, they were looking for vertical facade cladding. Soon enough, they were faced with a choice between wood cladding and aluminium cladding, but even though the wood option was cheaper, the owners were concerned that it would not age well. For durability, they were convinced that aluminium facade cladding would be the better option in the long term than the wood alternative. So, they opted for Renson®’s Linarte, which was to be finished in the same colour as the aluminium joinery. With the black plug sockets, intercom and outside tap also integrated with the facade cladding, no compromises were made on the sleek look of this home. To extend the same look and feel even further, the owners integrated a letterbox of their own design into a garden wall, which was then finished with linarte profiles. To ensure Renson®’s vertical Linarte profiles extended across the entire ground floor, the bicycle shed was also clad in the same design — including the door, which is integrated into the aluminium block profile-clad wall almost invisibly. On top of that, several LED strips have been integrated next to the front door. These serve as functional lighting and are the only source of light near the outside of the front door. “For a while, we thought about fitting wooden inserts to the blades, but eventually, we decided to keep the design as minimal as possible. What we did do on the front of the house is alternate between 16 mm and 30 mm Block profiles. This provides a much more lively effect and was easier to install as the individual blades can be fitted to the horizontal aluminium supports using clips.”

their home was a healthy and comfortable place to live. “We believe there are advantages and disadvantages to both a fully mechanically balanced ventilation system and a system with a natural supply of fresh outdoor air. We were drawn towards the ingenuity of the C+ system because if offers us perfect control depending on the volume of fresh we require at a set time. The owners said. In a traditional system, the polluted air is simply extracted outwards, but we opted for Renson®’s version, in which polluted hot air passes over a heat pump to recover the heat it contains for hot water and underfloor heating.” The residents made a conscious choice to fit an extraction system in the bedrooms too: “In the end, we’re extremely satisfied with that choice as we’ve noticed a huge improvement in the indoor climate of the bedrooms at night.” Large windows were a must in this home to allow as much light as possible to enter, but that did mean certain measures had to be taken to prevent the risk of overheating indoors, including a deliberate choice for external solar shading. “On hot days, we lower the screens as early as the morning,” the owners explain. “And if the sun starts to shine at any other time of day, we can even lower the screens remotely.” “The result is that we come home in the evening to perfect indoor temperatures. One big advantage is that view of our outside, is never compromised, even with the screens lowered. Also, by taking sunprotection into account right from the earliest designs, the screen boxes and side channels are invisibly integrated into the facade, which makes a huge difference to the sleek look of our new-build home.”

Natural ventilation and sunprotection is the key to a healthy and comfortable indoor climate The owners also began to think about energy performance too; thinking about how they could make sure 113
