“Bringing outside indoors” As a topic, ‘Creating Healthy Spaces’ is more current than ever before in Renson’s 112th anniversary: in fact, the global health crisis has even added a whole new dimension to Renson’s mission. A call for natural solu tions. A call for maximum daylight without overheating, for natural fresh air without compromise, … a call to bring outside indoors and inside outdoors. At home? Of course, but also in cities we need to bring back nature to keep them livable. Whether it’s ventilation, sun protection or ‘outdoor li ving’: the art lies in seeking harmony between the artifi cial aspect of techniques and a ‘back to nature’ feeling that allows you to breathe as easily inside as outside. Living in balance with oneself also insists to be able to live outside in all the comfort you’d expect inside. Whether a project involves a private residence, a pen thouse, an apartment, an office building, a school or a hospital. Simply read on to see for yourself.

CASE STUDY A new-build project as a ‘landmark’ alongside the E403 motorway between Kortrijk and Bruges: that’s what Arlu has achieved in the Belgian town of Ardooie in the shape of its new ‘epicentre’ for everything to do with opening doors. Reorientation to highly visible location with added value “The strikingly sleek façade on the 2015 new build by architects Govaert & Vanhoutte faced a quiet rural road,” Wim Waelkens (Managing Director at Arlu) re calls. “We thought that was a shame, given the mo ney we invested in it. When it became clear how we could expand on this site and create an epicentre for all things Arlu, we immediately started thinking about the added value of turning it into a ‘landmark’ alongside the motorway.” On top of the 6,000 m² already availa ble, plans were soon drawn up to expand by an extra 22,000 m² of production space, warehouses and offi ces to get the absolute maximum out of the site. Wim Waelkens: “Instead of just being a rear extension to our production hall, this new build was given a second façade – not along a country road this time, but directly facing the E403 motorway instead.”

prominent a location underneath the ARLU logo on the expanded metal façade cladding.

Landmark in brass and black To Arlu, this was the perfect opportunity to start thinking about the image this strategically interes ting façade could project. For Wim Waelkens, the de sign – drafted by Binst Architects and technically reali sed by Embo Architects – had to serve as a clear link to what was happening behind the walls. The brass colour of the building’s cornice provided the perfect solution to that requirement, and the black base underneath further accentuates that element. The same applies to the ‘opening doors’ baseline, which was given just as

Concrete, plenty of light and natural ventilation Turning once again to the building behind the façade, Arlu and architect Wim Embo traced out a functional industrial building in concrete. Plenty of light, natu ral ventilation and an intuitive building management system by OpenMotics were the main requirements set by the client: a fact that shouldn’t come as a sur prise, given the wealth of in-house experience availa ble at Renson, the greater entity that both Arlu and OpenMotics form part of.

Ventilation: Endura® Delta

Ventilation: Healthbox® 3.0

“The structure of the façade is partly transparent,” Luc Binst (CEO at Binst Architects) clarifies when asked about the design. “The warm appearance and design had to spell out at a glance which high-quality products were being created behind the façade. In brief, the spirit of this façade is the perfect match for Arlu’s corporate identity.” Around the offices, the stretch metal makes way for a repeating pattern of windows to provide sufficient light. The façade cladding does make a systematic return in the form of ‘fins’ installed at a right angle that – to gether with the near-invisible integrated curtain wall version of Renson’s Fixscreen Minimal sun protection fabric – ensures a pleasant indoor temperature.

CASE STUDY

Renson’s Topfix sun protection fabric was the only logical solution on this project: it made sure we could meet both our wind resistance and aesthetic requirements at the same time. Tim Isebaert (Torck Deinze)

With a central glass roof lantern, bright sunlight on hot summer days always has been a cause of concern for the owner of restaurant Pakhuis in Ghent. To prevent the indoor temperature from rising too high in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way, he opted for Renson’s Topfix sun protection fabric. Dimitri De Cuyper (Manager at Pakhuis): “When the sun hits the glass with full force, it often gets too hot inside.” “After all, the climate simply isn’t the same as it was 20 years ago,” Dimitri De Cuyper explains. “Temperatu res are rising, and the annual amount of sunshine hours is going up too. There’s no denying those facts, so we didn’t have any option but to prevent the sun from rea ching the glass by using outdoor sun protection. That’s the only way we can keep temperatures down inside and prevent our air conditioning system from working overtime. This is a conscious decision to help us keep our carbon footprint as small as possible.” “When you think about it, there’s no better example of the benefits of outdoor sun protection than this one,” Tim Isebaert (Renson Premium Ambassador Torck) adds. “When the glass roof lantern is subjected to the full force of the sun, indoor sun protection has little or no impact; once the heat has got inside, the damage has already been done. Renson’s Topfix sun protection fabric was the only logical solution on this project: it made sure we could meet the wind resistance require ments, and it was the perfect solution from an aesthe

tic perspective as it allowed us to respect the historical character of the property. From the inside, the sun pro tection fabric is barely visible.” “The aesthetic certainly was an important considera tion for us,” Dimitri De Cuyper confirms. “That’s why we asked to have the fabric boxes and side guiding chan nels powder coated in the exact same green colour as the steel lantern structure. At the same time, our decision to go with Topfix sun protection fabric was a decision we made with the comfort of our customers in mind. With the Topfix screens in place, they are no lon ger troubled by bright sunlight falling directly into the restaurant, while the transparency of the sun protec tion fabric makes sure we always get plenty of daylight coming in, even when the fabric is down.” “The sun protection fabric on the roof lantern has be come a normal part of life at the restaurant: the facili ties are there, so our staff automatically use them. As such, we’re extremely satisfied with this investment,” Dimitri De Cuyper concludes. “After all, the Topfix sys tem hasn’t just made Pakhuis significantly more sus tainable; it has also done wonders for the comfort of our customers.”

CASE STUDY

The intake of fresh air and extraction of polluted air are perfectly harmonised to provide the best possible indoor air quality, including at night. a2o architecten

Healthy and comfortable living was the top priority for the ‘full-service’ Ursulinenhof assisted living facility. Renson’s smart ventilation system and outdoor sun protection take care of every last aspect of a healthy indoor climate and pleasant indoor temperature for the residents. Screens prevent overheating Both the architect and the client were convinced that Fixscreen sun protection fabric was the right choice for this project. “Especially because even with the screens down, you can still enjoy the outside view,” a2o archi tecten explains, “all while the sun is blocked before it reaches the glass, so that it never gets too hot inside.” Another bonus in terms of architecture is that both the fabric boxes and side guiding channels are as good as completely integrated in the façade. Corner windows: screens without an obstructive corner profile Some flats at Ursulinenhof are fitted with ‘glass on glass’ corner windows. Once again, the architect could turn to Renson for the perfect solution: our specific Panovista Max corner sun protection. The two fabrics zip together when the corner screen is let down, mea ning the panoramic view is always fully maintained, without any cables or side guiding channels in the cor ner. Smart ventilation for each room The fact that ‘full service’ was also an important ele ment in terms of healthy indoor air is evidenced by the

selection of the demand-driven or ‘Smartzone C+’ ven tilation system. As a central ventilation unit, Healthbox 3.0 handles the extraction of polluted indoor air per room and per apartment on the basis of continuous measurements provided by CO2, humidity and odour sensors. A high EPB score played an important role in this choice, as did the small dimensions of the box and the single air duct system. According to a2o architecten: “Our client was extre mely impressed with the fact that fresh air enters the bedrooms via the Renson Invisivent Air Basic window vents.” That way, supply and extraction are perfectly in tune to guarantee the best indoor air quality, even at night. “But the biggest benefit of this C+ ventilation system is the fact that the residents don’t need to waste a single moment worrying about it,” a2o architecten concludes. “After all, that was the client’s absolute guiding prin ciple for this project: energy-efficient living should not mean having to compromise on ease of use and living quality.”

CASE STUDY

A bladed wall that looks stunning from an aesthetic perspective, that ventilates and that acts as fall prevention: a solution more versatile than this one simply doesn’t exist. Fabian Greveling (Technical and Commercial Manager at Storax)

Several residential towers have been completed on Wijnhaveneiland in Rotterdam over the past two decades. The most recent highlight is the 107-metre Uptown residential tower. The colourful Renson Linius bladed wall gives the building a fresh and future-proof appearance. Uptown consists of 178 apartments. The plinth area has a commercial function. A multi-storey car park and a bicycle shed are also planned, and that is exactly whe re Renson’s Linius L.050 bladed wall proves its a dded value. “During the development of the plan, architect Jeroen Hoorn asked us to come up with a suitable solu tion for the façade of the car park, among other things,” Fabian Greveling, Technical and Commercial Manager at Renson Ambassador Storax, explains. “It wasn’t long before the Linius L.050 bladed wall came up as an op tion, mainly due to its versatility in application possibi lities and its aesthetically pleasing character.” Fall prevention “The Linius L.050 bladed wall performs more than one function at Uptown,” Greveling continues. “The wall not only ensures that the car park, bicycle shed and was te facilities are well ventilated and protected from the weather; the specific position of the blades also ob structs the view. To create a uniform image, the bladed walls have also been extended across the non-ventila ted façades (near the apartments) and into the cour tyard garden. In other words, this project is a combi nation of various options; there were even additional requirements for the façade cladding, for example, in terms of fall prevention. Designing the bladed wall to prevent falling meant additional fencing was not re quired. The great thing about Renson is that they are always happy to work alongside you with this type of project-specific solution.”

Versatile bladed wall “This project really shows what we are capable of as a manufacturer,” Renson adds. “It demonstrates the versatility of our blades concept in terms of colour, application possibilities and attention to detail. Unlike a standard finish, the blades in the pedestrian area are mitre-welded together at the corners to eliminate sharp points. They also continue over the doors which, as a result, are barely distinguishable from the wall. Around the apartments, the blades are designed as fixed façade cladding with insulation behind. The ap pearance, however, remains identical to the ventilating elements. We offer a suitable solution for every situa tion.” Futureproof Almost every facet you can imagine has been combined in the bladed wall at Uptown. “It is great to see that the architect has stepped out of his comfort zone and given the bladed wall a striking colour,” Greveling adds. “The residents are enthusiastic and pleased with the appearance of the façades too.” Theo van der Weist lives on the 30th floor of the development: “The bladed wall is not only attractive, but also blocks the view of the car park from the outside. It creates a calm and tidy streetscape. Another bonus is that the wall is suffi ciently ventilated, so you don’t smell the exhaust fumes in the garage. A pleasant side effect, of course, is the fact that it’s maintenance-free.”
