Find summer fun along the South Shore By Speros A. Batistatos, FCDME President/CEO Summer along the South Shore is filled with numerous ways to spend time with family and friends. In each of the region’s five counties, visitors and residents will find an abundance of exciting attractions, events and things to do. The diversity of Northwest Indiana is seen in the variety of festivals, events and county fairs. Whiting’s celebration of heritage, Pierogi Fest®, features authentic food, life-size Polish pastries, a lawn-mower brigade and more. The fest takes over downtown Whiting July 24-26, 2015. Speaking of cultural
events, visitors and residents will want to head to DeMotte’s Touch of Dutch Festival. Festival attendees can enjoy live entertainment, craft and food vendors, kids’ entertainment, a parade, a car show, and family-friendly activities that will add to the Dutch atmosphere. Touch of Dutch will be hosted at Spencer Park on Saturday, Aug. 8. The region’s county fairs provide traditional fair fun for festival-goers. Attendees of any of the region’s county fairs can enjoy 4-H competitions, carnival rides, exhibits, live entertainment, and scrumptious fair food. The South Shore CVA will once again partner with Fair Oaks Farms to host the South
Shore Regional Car Show on Thursday, Aug. 6. Last year, the event attracted more than 210 hot rods, antique and classic cars, trucks and corvettes. Attendees will have the opportunity to admire an eclectic mix of cars as well as enjoy the many attractions available at Fair Oaks Farms. Many of the restaurants throughout the region take advantage of the warmer days and nights by offering alfresco dining. Enjoy the views of Lake George while at 54 Main Bistro in Hobart, take in majestic views of Lake Michigan while having a “Bartlett’s on the Beach” basket from Beverly Shore’s Bartlett’s Gourmet Grill & Tavern, and relax in the heart of downtown Valparaiso
History, festivals in Rochester Come one, come all to see the historic theme at the Fulton County Historical Society grounds located 4 miles north of Rochester, Ind. Open Monday thru Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EDST). The Historical Society grounds also houses a Museum, Round Barn Museum and a Living History Village called Loyal, Indiana. All the buildings will be open during the festivals and by appointment only in the Living History Village, which consists of 12 buildings and the Round Barn. The Museum itself has 17 different displays and a genealogy research library, and the Round Barn Museum houses horse drawn farm equipment. The Fulton County Historical Society hold two Living History Festivals a year, the Redbud Trail Rendezvous, the last weekend in April and the Trail of Courage Living History Festival, the third weekend in September. These are pre-1840 time period events and have entertainment on two stages, foods cooked over wood fires, Indian dances, and traditional crafts. Also on the third weekend in June they co-sponsor the Fulton County Historical Power Show where people from all over display their antique tractors, lawn tractors, and hit-n-miss
or Crown Point at any of the many restaurants offering outside seating. Outdoor sporting events and activities are also a great way to enjoy the summer months along the South Shore. Residents and visitors can take in a game of disc golf at Lemon Lake County Park in Crown Point, hit the links at any of the region’s lush golf courses, drop a line at Willow Slough Fish and Wild Life Area or Lake Michigan, or wind surf at Wolf Lake Memorial Park in Hammond. Home to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and State Park, Northwest Indiana offers visitors and residents opportunities to relax and find adventure. The
dunes stretch 25 miles along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, and play host to sparkling waters and pristine beaches. Visitors can enjoy our great lake through boating and fishing or by soaking up the sun on the beach. Deep River Waterpark in Merrillville, one of the Midwest’s largest outdoor water parks, also offers residents and visitors another great way to cool down on hot summer days. No matter what you and your family like to do during summer, the South Shore will surely help fill the longer days and warmer nights with great attractions, events and things to do. For more ideas, be sure to visit www. AlongtheSouthShore.com.

Be a part of Fendig Summer Theatre 40th season of providing a community theatre program in which children in the fourth through eighth grade in Rensselaer produce a high quality performance for the community. July 9,10 and 11, 2015 the group will be performing "Mary Poppins" presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). The organization has been in Jasper County since 1976 providing quality theatre experiences for the youth of Rensselaer with no cost to the participants. All children who audition receive a part in making the production and are involved in all aspects of the production from the acting, set construction, costumes, stage crew,
lighting, sound, makeup and more. The idea behind the group is quality theatre for children by children. As part of the organization's anniversary celebration, Pat Collins one of the founding board members as well as the original director will be returning to direct and mentor the participants as well as other production staff in this year’s production. He is currently Professor of Education and Chair of Theatre at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, where he teaches courses on education and the arts as well as theatre, drama and education. When asked if Pat would come back to the Rensselaer Community to help us provide our 40th production this is how he responded…
“... coming back to direct Fendig is coming home. Without Fendig I wouldn’t be doing what I am doing today. It is only because this community supported my work and allowed the children of Rensselaer to teach me how to direct that I have been doing this for the last forty years. Mary Poppins says: “Anything can happen if you let it”. That’s what Fendig is about and that’s why I am coming back to celebrate.” To Participate Children must be current fourth through eighth graders living in or attending the Rensselaer Central School District. Audition appointments will be on Thurs., May 14 and Fri., May 15

The Fendig Summer Theatre for Children began as the The Rensselaer Children’s Summer Theatre in 1976. Through the diligent work of its first Board of Directors: William Moriarty, Pat Collins, Robert Garrity, Bonnie Louck, Gwen Potter, Judy Steiner, and Helen Watts, the theatre produced its first production, The Pied Piper. The goal of this non-for-profit community organization is to produce one full-length musical play each summer. The first production allowed children in grades one through eight to participate. Soon it became necessary to limit its actors and actresses to students in grades four through eight where it remains today. Every child who auditions is given a role. Children who wish to assist the production with make-up, set construction, publicity or as a member of the technical crew are welcomed.

Thrills of the speedway Big plans in works for Francesville Fall Festival excite fans at Shadyhill Francesville has big plans in the works for their annual Fall Festival which will be taking place Friday, September 18 (beginning at 4:30 p.m.) through Sunday, September 20, in downtown Francisville. Some of the free entertainment offered at this year's festival includes crafts, flea markets, music programs, food booths, a petting zoo, variety show, parade and fireworks on Saturday, auto show, cornhole tournament, and street demonstrations. Jungle John will also be visiting with his fascinating animal show. Carnival rides will be available for all to enjoy, along with dinners featured each night. On Friday, there will be an American Legion fish dinner. Saturday features a pancake breakfast
and a HDC chicken dinner. Sunday festival attendees can enjoy a delicious festival pork chop dinner. A special feature at this year's Fall Festival will be the Lincoln Funeral Train on display all weekend. In early 1865, the United States Military Railroad delivered the 1865 equivalent of Air Force One to President Lincoln, a private railroad car. Lincoln never used the railroad car, named The United States, while he was alive. On April 21, 1865, President Lincoln’s body and the body of his son, Willie, left Washington D.C. in The United States, which had been modified to serve as a funeral car. Over 12 days, The United States traveled about 1,600 miles through more than 160 communities, carrying the martyred President back home to Springfield, Illinois. In 12 major cities formal funerals were held, and many more memorial services were organized in communities along the train’s route.
