JASPER COUNTY FAIR JULY 2018
2018 Jasper County Fair begins Saturday, July 14
County fairs provide the best entertainment By ALICE SMITH Purdue Extension Educator It is County Fair season! During the next few weeks every county in the area will be celebrating agriculture, locally grown livestock and produce, prized pets and the skills of young and old alike. Each county fair has it’s own personality and events, yet they all have many things in common. It is an annual gathering of the community, renewing of friendships and making of new friends. County fair food is usually fragrant, fattening and often fried. This is the day to throw your diet out the door and chow down on a corn dog. Local businesses expand to meet the culinary desires of fairgoers while other food vendors, often with more exotic offerings go from fair to fair during the summer. Local organizations also offer food options for you to try as well. Area businesses will be available in the evenings to let you know what they have to offer, and often have useful items for you as well. A large number of area residents are past 4-H members and many of these adults volunteer their time fair week and often for weeks before, assisting the current group of 4-H members learn skills that will last a lifetime. The Jasper County Fair is also an opportunity for non-4-H members to exhibit their talents in Open Class competitions. Throughout the week there are Open Shows in most of the livestock barns. The Community Building is home to the non-livestock classes. You can enter a perfect flower, or vegetables from your garden. There are classes for photography, painting and drawing, a wide array of crafts and sewing, canning and freezing and the popular culinary classes. All entries are accepted on July 14 from 7:30-9:30 a.m. (garden and flowers until noon) with judging to follow. Items will then be arranged and put on display when the building opens to the public at 5 p.m. If you do not want to bake a yummy cake or pie, stop by the building by 6 p.m. and all the cakes, pies, and breads will be auctioned to the highest bidder! Throughout the week there will be livestock shows in the arena or

barns, good music on the free stage, opportunities to visit the pioneer village, activities for children, events in the grandstand in the evenings, and a variety of crafting classes in the Community Building. There are also daily activities for children in the Community Building. A new feature at the Jasper County Fair this year is a Child ID trailer to be located near the Sheriff’s Barn. Parents will be able to get a free child ID card for each for their children. The photo and other information will be on file with the sheriff office in case of an emergency as well receiving a card. Plan your week, visit the fair often, and enjoy the assortment of fair food offerings and entertainment as you get reacquainted with your friends from other areas. Try to attend at least one of the area county fairs this year, each is similar but also very unique. Bringing locals together for a celebration of their community is the way county fairs offers something for everyone. Whether guiding a youngster onto the kiddy rides, relaxing with friends in the barn, or watching your neighbor kid catch a pig in mud, attending the fair is a unique experience that can really bring out the best in your local area. So check the list and mark your calendars for a day at the fair; the carnival is calling, and there’s a chocolate milkshake or pink cotton candy with your name on it. Area fairs include: • Pulaski County – June 30 to July 5 (just completed);
• Starke County July 9 – 13;
• Jasper County July 14 – 21;
• Newton County July 16 – 21;

94th Jasper County Fair to feature an extra day of fun Fair to stay open an extra day this year By Nick Fiala reporter@rensselaerrepublican.com
The Jasper County Fair will remain open an extra day this year, a decision by the Fair Association that goes back to back to last year’s near-miss storm situation. “It had to do mainly with our carnival,” said Jasper County Fair Association President Tom Moore, “Last year we did it, we had that storm at the end of the fair and we had to cancel the demo derby.” The storm, which took place during the auction on the final night of the fair last year, was so close to becoming an all-out disaster that procedures for how to respond in the event of severe weather became a topic of discussion at the next meeting of the Jasper County Commissioners. At that meeting, Fair Board representative Lou Nagel spoke to the Commissioners, along with Chief Deputy Pat Williamson of the Sheriff’s Office. Commissioner Kendell Culp also shared his firsthand account of what happened. “We’ve had torrential rains and flooded buildings; we’ve had winds that have torn awnings off,” Nagel said at the meeting. “But I don’t think I’ve every witnessed that type of storm during the week of the fair. And I hope it’s another hundred years or 75 years before we have to deal with something like that again.” The storm brought heavy rain, intense thunder and lightning as well as strong winds. “That was a close one,” Williamson said at the meeting. “...I know the sheriff was watching. He said the whole storm was rotating ... I think it could have been quite a tragedy if a tornado would have dropped out of that.” Fortunately, the storm soon dissipated and there was relatively little damage. For those who ran the carnival portion of the fair, it turned into something of a happy accident the next day. “We went ahead and did it the next night, and we found that some of the food trailers stuck around and some of the entertainment stuck around and it went over pretty well,” Moore said. “And, by adding that day, we’re able to keep the carnival later on the weekends, where normally they’re not able to be here on the

Just in case anyone wasn’t having enough fun at the fair, there will now be an extra carnival day. The Jasper County Fair’s extra day may be a regular fixture if this year’s last day is well-attended. weekends. So that was kind of the main reason we did it.” Moore said he’s heard that the carnival rides normally anticipate running weekend-to-weekend visits, so the extra day was seen as more sensible, even if normal last-day functions will be happening elsewhere.

“It just gives us one extra day to do a little bit,” Moore said. “The animals will be going home, like they normally do, on Saturday morning. So that last day will basically just be kind of an entertainment day.”
If there is a good turnout this time, that extra day might become a regular part of the fair. “It’s just something we’re trying this year to see if it goes over well or not,” Moore said.

JASPER COUNTY FAIR JULY 2018
Grandstand to remain busy at Fair next week JASPER COUNTY — When the Jasper County Fair program is printed and distributed in the community, one of the first series of events potential fair-goers educate themselves on are those at the Grandstand. With this year’s fair increasing by a day, organizers were sure to add an extra day of Grandstand fun as well, with the return of Monster Trucks on Saturday, July 21 — the final day of fair. Starting Saturday, July 14, Kali Rose will perform at the Grandstand, paving the way for plenty of adventurous events for the rest of the week. On Sunday, July 15, Mud Drags returns to the Grandstand dirt track at 7 p.m., with the annual Truck Pull to follow on Monday, July 16 at 7 p.m. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Grandstand will host back-to-back nights of rodeo fun. The rodeo begins at 7 p.m. each night. On Thursday, July 19, kids and adults will do their best to catch a greased pig beginning at 7 p.m. and the popular demolition derby will return to the track on Friday, July 20 at 7 p.m. Last year’s demo derby was canceled due to poor weather, but it is the hope that the event will continue without disruption this year. The free stage will also host a busy week of musical performances this year, including: Saturday, July 14 — Scott Greeson 7 p.m. (7 p.m.) Sunday, July 15 — Heritage Gospel Quartet (5:30 p.m./7 p.m.) and Heaven Cansler (8 p.m.) Monday, July 16 — Night Shift (5:30 p.m./7 p.m.) and Somewhere

Kids of all ages tried in vain to catch slippery, greased pigs at the pig catching event at the Grandstand last year. It was the first year for the event and was so popular with competitors and spectators alike that it will return this year.
