Cedar Lake: A resort destination
Cedar Lake in its early days started out as various villages and each villages had its own founders. Tinkerville/Creston was one of the earliest about 1840, with a blacksmith shop owned by Fred Miller. Most of these people came from the West Point settlement on east Cedar Lake and were from New England. This area is now known as Coleman’s Corner. Later, about 1875, the sette ment moved nearly a mile west and was named Creston by the Monon Railroad. There was Armour at the northwest shore founded about 1870, when Nicholas Geisen started the Cedar Lake Handle Factory. Paisley, along the southwest shore, began about 1881, when the Monon Railroad was completed. The railroad named it after a railroad official. Hanover Center, later Cook, was a German settlement and founded about 1855, by Herman Beckman. Brunswick was founded about 1855, when a Mr. Dutton established a store. Klaasville was founded when August Klaas opened a store in 1855. Cedar Lake became a resort circa 1881, after the Monon Railroad was completed. It continued as a resort until the 1930s. Cedar Lake was incorporated as a town in 1967, and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017. The Pottawatomi name for the lake was Mes-Kwah-Ock-Bis, or
