Jasper County: Things to Know •According to “A Standard History of Jasper and Newton Counties”, the first settler within the limits of Jasper County was William Donahue, who settled in what is now Gillam Township around 1832. Donahue was drawn to the county for its good trapping and trade prospects with Native Americans. • Jasper County was named for Revolutionary War hero Sgt. William Jasper who was a famous scout for the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He was later killed at the Siege of Savannah in 1779. • Jasper County was formally organized on March 15, 1838. • Originally the territory of Jasper included all of the present county of Newton and most of Benton. Previously it was attached to White County. • The land area of Jasper County in square miles is 559.63 with 59.8 people per square mile. It is the third largest county in Indiana. • Rensselaer wasn’t always the county seat. The first county seat was located at Parish Grove, 30 miles south of the present seat of justice and five miles southwest of Fowler. This was chosen because it was near the center of the population and because it is one of the few high and dry spots in the county. • Jasper County enlisted 935 soldiers on behalf of the Union Army at the beginning of the American Civil War. This large amount was considered impressive at the time. • Rensselaer was home to “(Back Home Again In) Indiana” song-
writer James “Jimmy” Hanley. A song that is still played every hour at the Indiana State Museum, “Back Home …” was co-penned by Hanley and Ballard MacDonald in 1917. Hanley is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. • Remington is home to a famous pitcher. Though not exactly Cy Young or Nolan Ryan, Frances Janssen was an ace pitcher with the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in the 1940s. • The Kankakee River marshland in northern Jasper County was home to some of the wildest animals in Indiana at the turn of the 20th Century. The area was so thick with wild animals and birds that it drew visits from Theodore Roosevelt and General Lew Wallace, author of the famous book “Ben Hur.” It is believed that Wallace wrote portions of the book while visiting the Kankakee near Wheatfield and DeMotte. •Until the middle of the 19th century, when it was drained to make farmland, this county was part of the second largest freshwater wetland in the United States. • Rensselaer was originally called Newton. It became the county seat when the state commissioners met in June 1839 and decided upon a consolidation. The original plat of the newly chosen county seat was field June 12, 1839. • The population of Jasper County as of the 2010 census was 33,478. •The Catholic church is the biggest denomination in the county with 4,341 members.

Remington, situated in southern Jasper County, was founded in the spring of 1860 and was a small farming community known at that time as Carpenter Station or Carpenter, after Carpenter’s Creek. The depot was constructed in the fall of 1859, built just west of the crossing at Ohio Street. Trains began running in January 1860. On Sept. 6, 1869 the town held its first meeting to elect a board of trustees. Our Cities & Towns Town of Wheatfield
The town of Wheatfield was founded in 1883 on land donated to the town by Simon and Mae Thompson. The first post office was opened a year prior to that, in 1882. Wheatfield may have gotten its name from the wild rice or swamp grass that grew in the area, which was said to look like a field of grain or because it was the area where the first field of wheat in the county was planted. Wheatfield was originally a railroad town with the Plymouth, Kankakee and Pacific railroad running through it. The railroad was used to ship wildlife caught by local hunters to the markets in the Chicago area. The office of Sheriff can be traced back to Alfred the Great in England in the late 9th century. The word Sheriff is derived from the English term “shire-reeve” which stands for keeper of the county. A function that the Sheriff is dedicated to over a thousand years later. The first known elected Sheriff in North America occurred in Virginia in 1651. When Indiana adopted its constitution in 1816 the Sheriff was made a constitutional office under Article 6. Section 2. As such the Sheriff is the highest elected lawenforcement officer in the county in which the people have a voice to elect.
I wish to assure the citizens of Jasper County, that we hold the oath of this office as a sacred honor.

Saint Joseph’s College
Saint Joseph’s College, named a “character-building college” by the Templeton Foundation and a “best Midwestern college” by the Princeton Review, is a fouryear, Catholic college offering 27 majors, four group majors, 35 minors, and nine pre-professional programs, complemented by the nationally acclaimed Core Program. SJC also offers three master’s degree programs. Founded and sponsored by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, SJC is located in Rensselaer on a park-like campus of 180 acres and has an enrollment of nearly 1,200 students. Academics Saint Joseph’s College is the only college with the Core Program, the heart of the SJC curriculum. At other colleges,
students are required to take a number of courses in different areas to fulfill their general education requirements. This often takes place during the first year or two of the student’s college experience. However, at SJC these required general education courses are evenly spread out through a student’s four years at the college. This allows students the benefit of beginning study in their field of major in the first year of college. For students who have declared a major, this gives the benefit of four years of study in the major as well as four years of general education. Faith & Service At SJC, students are welcome to become involved in Campus Ministry in whichever ways they choose. From serving as a liturgical minister at Mass to volunteering for trips

Jasper County Courthouse
The Jasper County Courthouse that sits in the center of the Rensselaer downtown square is not the first county courthouse. The structure of Bedford limestone, turrets, curving arches and gabled dormers is the third courthouse to house the county government. According to “The Jasper County Courthouse 18961996,” in late 1839, a log building was constructed in Newton (Rensselaer). In 1845, a second courthouse was built with a frame building, while in 1857 a third courthouse was built of brick. The third building was damaged by fire that started under mysterious circumstances on Jan. 18, 1865, according to the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana website. It was repaired and continued to serve the county until 1895 when commissioners hired an architect from Fort Wayne to design a fireproof courthouse. Construction for the building began in 1896. County officials were able to move into the completed courthouse in 1898. Since then the courthouse has received continuous upkeep and in 1996 decorative painters restores original interior stencils, gilding, and a 16-color paint scheme in celebration of the courthouse’s
100th birthday. The roof of the courthouse was replaced in 2012 from shingles to slate, that is said to resemble the slate that covered the roof when it was built in 1896 to 1898. The courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Place in 1983. Other sites in Jasper County on the National Register of Historic Places are: Fountain Park Chautauqua, added in 2001. It is located at 6244 W. County Road. 1600 S, Remington. Independence Methodist Church, located southeast of Wheatfield, added in 1982. The Remington Water Tower and Town Hall, located at 3 E. Michigan St. in Remington, added in 2003. Rensselaer Carnegie Center, located at 301 N. Van Rensselaer St. in Rensselaer, added in 1994. St. Joseph Indian Normal School (also known as Drexel Hall), located on the Saint Joseph’s College Campus, added in 1973.
