PAC to host art camp, Rock the Arts in summer 2016 By Harley Tomlinson harley@rensselaerrepublican.com
When the Prairie Arts Council formed in Rensselaer in 1992, one of the reasons it did so was to make use of the Carnegie Center, which housed the Rensselaer Library for decades. The council converted the top floor of the center into an art gallery, named the Lillian Fendig Gallery in honor of the late Rensselaer artist and her husband Ralph, who were benefactors of the PAC in its early years. The gallery provided opportunities for people in Jasper and Newton counties to engage with art work on display there. Later, the PAC would provide other opportunities to engage in art, including exhibits and performances. PAC members also provided instruction in the arts and to help enrich art education. This education has grown with the establishment of the Art Camp, which will be held this year from

Monday, June 20 to Friday, June 24 at various locations in Rensselaer. This is the 23rd year of the Art Camp and director Bonnie Zimmer has been an instructor every year. The first year of the camp, there were six workshops. Now there are over 120 that deal with all sorts of art forms, including painting, pottery making, crafts and performance art and dance. This year, workshops will be held in locations such as the Carnegie Center, the DeMotte Library, the Wheatfield Library and the Heart of Hand Studio in Wheatfield. What is produced in the Art Camp is then put on display at the Lillian Fendig Gallery for all to see. In past years, the art work was placed in the center to coincide with the Taste of Rensselaer festival, which has been reworked into another summer event. The center hosts several events throughout the year, including the Saint Joseph's College Senior Artists and Art Faculty Show, the Annual Holiday Art Show and Sale and the current Jasper County Art League Photography Exhibit Competition, which will run through June 10 Monday through Friday from 12-2 p.m. each day. On July 30, the PAC will hold its annual Rock the Arts event at Potawatomi Park and downtown Rensselaer. This year, the PAC and Carpenter Creek Cellars winery in Jasper County will hold a wine label competition. Artists can submit three works of art to be judged with the winning art piece to be used as a label on Carpenter Creek Cellars' wine bottles. PAC also sponsors Arts Alive! programs throughout the year, including wine tasting and bird watching workshops. In the spring, the council holds Regional School Art Shows at Saint Joseph's College. It showcases some of the area students' best art work from schools in Jasper and Newton counties.

Fountain Park Chautauqua welcomes visitors, new and old By Nick Fiala reporter@rensselaerrepublican.com
One interesting and historical place to check out this summer is Fountain Park Chautauqua in Remington. Founded in 1895, it is one of only three chatauquas that have remained in continuous existence since its establishment. And in fact, some people have been going there as a regular summer getaway for almost a lifetime. Linda Emerson, a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Program Committee, is one of those people. “I would go with my grandparents when I was little,” she said. “And then, when I was a young married person, we took our camper. And then, in ‘76, we were fortunate enough to have a cottage...So I guess I’ve actually been going pretty close to 70 years, all told. And my great-grandchildren are seventh-generation Fountain Park people. My greatgrandfather [William Mccollough] was on the first board of directors.” The word “chautauqua” is also the name of a movement that came through rural America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Former President Theodore Roosevelt once called it “the most American thing in America.” It is intended to promote entertainment and culture for a whole community, inviting performances and special messages from pastors, teachers and local talents. “The original chautauquas were formed...to teach Sunday school teachers.” Emerson said. “They were all over the United States in the original years. Through the years…[they] have evolved into more of a celebration of the arts.”

That shift in focus has opened the chautauqua to hosting art departments and various forms of entertainment during the summer season, in addition to Sunday school classes and church services. There are now at least 70 privatelyowned cottages in the chautauqua. And, for the public, there is a hotel open just two weeks out of the year. It has at least 30 rooms but, according to Emerson, just four bathrooms. “It’s a little on the primitive side,” she said, “but very quaint. And [for] the people that stay there...It’s almost like they’re a big family...People come from all over the country and out of the country even...for a day or two weeks or however long they can be there. Some of the families are actual families, and some of them are just friends that feel like families. And the whole situation does feel like a big family.” The setting reflects its origins, but it is not stagnant. It is being updated and added onto at a fairly regular rate. “Our [cottage] is about 12’ by 30’,” Emerson said. “There are some of the ones that are the original cottages that have been updated a little bit. The hotel was built about 1900, and some of the cottages came about that time, too. Then there are a few really new ones that are only five or six or 10 years old.” And despite the heavy focus on a family atmosphere, its regulators encourage new people to visit. “We do want everybody to know that it isn’t a secret club or something that only certain people get to go to,” Emerson said. “Everybody’s welcome and everybody’s encouraged to come

Events open to the public include talent shows, gospel groups and local band performances, a senior citizen's day, a magic show and auctions. There will also be presentations on a variety of topics, including revered
Indiana writer, George Ade. Those interested can buy a season pass or pay the daily entrance fees. All events are scheduled according to Eastern Time. To see the official schedule for all events, go to www.fountain-park.com. Fountain Park is located at 6244 W. 1600 S. in Remington.

The Brushwood United Methodist Church will host a kickoff carnival from 10:30 - 2:30 p.m. on June 18. The event will include clowns making balloon animals and a ventriloquist performance by Beth Cummins, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Other festivities during the event will include cupcake walks and games for kids throughout the day. The goal of the carnival, according to church representatives, is to let the community know that the church cares about the kids and to provide them with a fun day. All the festivities will take place outdoors, but anyone interested in
seeing more of the church is welcome to come inside for a tour and to come back on Sunday to take part in a church service. The carnival is open to anyone who is interested, but most of the games are geared toward elementary-age children. Throughout the day, cotton candy, snow cones and popcorn will be served. Hot dogs and chips will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All food and games are free to children and parents or grandparents who attend the carnival with them. Brushwood UMC is located around seven miles north of Rensselaer at 5474 W. 200 N., Rensselaer.

Newton County Pun’kin Vine Fair is jam-packed with fun By Cory Groover This year will provide another great slate of events at the Newton County Pun’kin Vine Fair. This year’s grandstand schedule will feature some new events and some old favorites. On Saturday, July 9, the race horses will take their positions for an old time favorite, Harness Racing. Harness Racing has been a longtime tradition at the Newton County Fair. When several county fairs have phased this event out, the Newton County Fair is holding strong. This year, there is no charge. Community members can come see the horses run for free. Head out to the fairgrounds at noon to see the pacers and trotters make their mark at the Newton County Fair. Church Night will be held at the Sheep Arena at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 10. But come early for the free carnival night. Kids can ride the carnival rides Sunday evening from 4 – 7 p.m. when they bring five cans of food to donate to the Newton County Food
Pantries. This will be a chance to ride the rides early and for free. Free hot dogs and water will be served at the Sheep Arena prior to P. Diddy and the Trustees’ performance for Church Night. Monday, July 11, the Newton County Fair Queen will be crowned. The pageant starts at 8 p.m. at the grandstand. Anyone who knows a Newton County young lady that would like to try out for the title of Miss Newton County, please contact Amanda at 219-866-6791. The Little Miss and Mister Pageant will get the crowd warmed up at 6:30 p.m. These cute little contestants are sure to put a smile on your face. Anyone with a youngster who would like to enter into the contest, please contact Karen at 219-8637037. Country music artist Dustin Lynch will take the stage on Tuesday, July 12. “Where It’s At”, “She Cranks my Tractor”, and “Cowboys and Angels” are a few of his hit songs. The Wolfe Brothers will be starting the show at 8 p.m. Tickets are currently on
sale at newtoncountyfair. com. The Kid and Adult Pedal Tractor Pull is moving to the grandstand. On Wednesday, July 13 at 5 p.m. take your free seat to watch the kids pump those little legs to get the longest pull. There is no charge to watch this grandstand event. After the kids finish up, the adults get their turn to show off their leg power. Then, at 7 p.m., a new event will make its debut at the Newton County Fair, a Power Wheels Derby. Little drivers will get settled into their power wheels vehicle and then get to bump and crash into each other, just like the big cars at a Demolition Derby. Anyone who is interested in any of these events, contact D & M Events by email dawnnmark@ embarqmail.com or call 219-964-1031. Thursday, July 14, and Friday, July 15, will bring two nights of truck and tractor pulls. Come see all the excitement of horsepower at its finest. These trucks and tractors are an impressive show of what a well-made machine can do.
Purchase the Two Night Pull Special to see both nights for one price. An event that hasn’t been seen for a while at the Newton County Fair is coming back this summer. Saturday, July 16, the grandstand will be full of excitement for the Newton County Demolition Derby. Come watch the crash and smash. Anyone who is interested in being a driver, contact Jeff at 765412-8627 or Chris at 815867-7153. And don’t forget all the Newton County Pun’kin Vine Fair events can be found at newtoncountyfair.com and on the Newton County Pun’kin Vine Fair Facebook page.

Water tower days fun for all By Sara DeYoung
Remington’s Water Tower Days focuses on free events for the whole family June 10 and 11. New events to the festival include horse-drawn carriage rides with Cinderella and Legos at the library. Youths can also look forward to a petting zoo, camel rides, a balloon artist and a puppet show. While there are several children’s activities, adults can also look forward to several different entertainment groups on the main stage. According to Dana Pampel, festival committee chair, organizers are thrilled to be bringing back The Flying Toasters because of their wide appeal. “They play all genres of music, have
high energy and always bring a crowd,” she said. A beer and wine garden will also be open on Friday and Saturday evening from 7 to 11 p.m. Craft and food booths will be open Friday evening and all day Saturday. Attendees will have the opportunity to ride a zip line or travel in a hot air balloon. All attractions are located in Remington’s historic downtown. “We love having the festival downtown to showcase our downtown businesses and historic water tower.” Pampel said. “It was important to the committee to provide fun events within walking distance for all ages. We have wonderful sponsors that allow us to do this for the community and visitors.”
This year's Little Cousin Jasper Festival will feature new attractions as well a old favorites. As always, the festival, which will take place Sept. 9-11 at the Rensselaer courthouse square will have various food vendors and craft booths. New this year will be an extreme gyro ride that spins and turns upside down. Abe and Mary Lincoln will walk in the annual parade and Abe will give a speech for the crowd. See JASPER, Pg. A12

Newton County Park board plans summer family activities By Sara DeYoung
Experience Newton County with the Newton County Park Board and several free events across the area, from the Kankakee to the Iroquois and from LaSalle to Willow Slough, Indiana’s youngest county has a variety of family friendly recreational activities. The annual Summer Fishing Derby is slated from 6 to 11 a.m. June 4 at Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife. In partnership with the Department of Natural Resources during Indiana’s free fishing weekend, no fishing license is required. Free coffee, donuts and lemonade will be on hand and prizes for mystery weight dinners in several age categories and door prizes will be awarded. Top prize is a Minn Kota trolling motor. The Newton County Run Series is a total of four 5K Run/Walk events throughout the summer in Morocco, Goodland, Brook and at the Pun’kin Vine Fair. Participants who complete three of the four events will be eligible for a free t-shirt. Registration deadlines and forms can be found on the website, newtoncountyparkboard.com. A new activity offered by the Park Board is geocaching. Visit some of the historical and hidden treasures of the area through the Park Board’s strategically placed caches. More caches will be placed throughout the summer and fall so be sure to check the website
throughout the season. Go beyond the river bend in two paddling events done in partnership with the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association. The first Everglades of the North Paddling Event on July 16 at LaSalle Fish and Wildlife will take participants back through time. In 2015 creators of the Everglades of the North documentary accompanied paddlers and highlighted points of historic and ecological significance. Native hibiscus flowers, also called swamp mallows are usually in bloom and if water levels are high, paddlers can venture deep into the historic bayous and even witness fledgling eagles along the route. The second event on the Iroquois River is slated for Sept. 10. The Iroquois features a natural flow with twists and bends unusual to the area, according to Dan Plath, president of the NWIPA. There are not many places in Northwest Indiana you can paddle this long along a river pretty much through pure wilderness. It is a terrific water trail. Photos submitted

Wolcott's Mellow on the Market always features local entertainment.
Wolcott plans for Mellow on the Market Submitted The Wolcott Main Street Committee voted at its March meeting to hold the annual Mellow on the Market event from 5 to 10 p.m. Aug. 20 in downtown Wolcott.
“The goal of the event is to bring together community members of all ages for a relaxing evening with local food and local entertainment,” said board member, Jim Pinkerton. Three acts are planned and Kerry Jordan will be organizing entertainment for the event.
The Community Christian Reformed Church in Roselawn will be hosting its 7th annual band fest, sponsored by the Save-a-Lot grocery store. The fest will be held on Aug. 27 at 5 p.m. rain or shine. The location of the event is still unknown, but is being narrowed down between the Community Christian church and the Save-a-Lot parking lot. In the event of rain, the fest will definitely be moved into the church in Roselawn. This year the fest will be showcasing four bands, two from the local area. The DeMotte band “66 Books” will be performing as well as the Roselawn band “Once Ascended.” From Huntington, punk rock band “Attaboy” will be appearing along with the band “Disciple.” “Disciple” is a hard rock band from Tennessee that has been
playing since 1992. The Community Christian Band Fest averages 700-800 attendees every year and offers free entertainment and activities for the family. “The goal of the band fest is doing a nice, free family friendly event for the people of Roselawn/DeMotte,” said fest organizer, Dave Walstra.
