2022 JASPER COUNTY FACT BOOK
WELCOME
Welcome to Jasper County It is our privilege to introduce the 2022 Jasper County, Indiana Fact Book, a production of the Rensselaer Republican and Kankakee Valley Post newspapers. We hope that this publication will serve as your guide to Discover Jasper County. Jasper County, settled in 1832 and named in honor of Revolutionary War Sergeant William Jasper, is perfectly located south of Chicago and beautiful Lake Michigan and north of Indianapolis. Intersecting highways, railways, and waterways allow for easy transport of goods. Abundant transportation resources paired with the area’s naturally rich soil make Jasper County a leading agriculture producer in Indiana. Jasper County is truly a place for everyone! The county combines quaint small towns with developing cities. If you are looking for up-and-coming unique downtown scenes or more rural experiences, Jasper County can provide both within a matter of miles. The Kankakee and Iroquois Rivers, along with Jasper-
Pulaski State Wildlife Area provide ample access to fishing/ hunting, camping, hiking, and birdwatching. Proximity to cities like Chicago and Lafayette/ West Lafayette allows you to “Bear Down” or “Boiler UP” and expose yourself to vibrant city life. An art-infused culture mixed with unique local shops, restaurants, breweries, and wineries. There is so much to discover when you live in or visit Jasper County. JCEDO has been around since 1986 and continues to run on the resiliency of our community and the opportunities that keep knocking on our door. As one of the few rural counties in the state with a growing population, we are primed to
see unprecedented growth in the agricultural, industrial, and residential sectors. JCEDO is poised to seize this momentum by: • Increasing opportunities for small businesses. • Improving relationships with existing businesses. • Continuing to grow and attract a strong workforce. • Enhancing tourism and community development efforts. • Building a stronger relationship with the community that we serve. We hope that you enjoy the 2022 Fact Book and continue to learn more about Jasper County! Sincerely, Stephen Eastridge Executive Director Jasper County Economic Development Organization

Remington, situated in southern Jasper County, was founded in the spring of 1860 and was a small farming community known at that time as Carpenter Station or Carpenter, after Carpenter’s Creek. The name later changed to Remington, perhaps the name of a local store owner. The railway was completed and known as the Logansport, Peoria, & Burlington Railway. Trains began running January 1860. On Sept. 6, 1869 the town held its first meeting to elect a board of trustees. Situated just 90 miles southeast of Chicago and 90 miles northwest of Indianapolis, Remington is host to many local businesses and community organizations. Interstate 65 is just miles east, and US 24 and US 231 pass through town. Remington boasts many homes and landmarks of historic note, with many types of architecture represented. Remington’s town government is made up of five council members elected by ward. The term of office for a member is four years, beginning Jan 1, following

Remington Depot In July of 2019 the renovated depot was unveiled, as part of an overall downtown revitalization plan to give residents a sense of historic pride, as well as a place to conduct private and public events. The depot has a fully stocked kitchen with an array of appliances. There is seating for about 40 people, but the building can accommodate more. Renters are welcome to add their own tables and chairs to help fulfill their needs. The depot has been an integral part of Remington’s history. According to the book, “History of Remington” by Floyd Legler, work to complete the railroad began in 185859. At the time, Remington was known as “Carpenter Station.” Once the railroad was completed, the first depot was planned and erected just west of the downtown block. The original depot, according to Legler’s book, was one block west of the current depot’s location. In 1860, the town was renamed “Remington” and sometime before 1894, the current depot was built. It would later be renamed Rensselaer in 1844 after its founder James Van Rensselaer from New York. In 1896, Rensselaer officially became a city, sharing the same name with a city in New York. Our great history is evident with a stroll through our city. You may begin with the centrally-located 125 years old Jasper County Courthouse, Rensselaer serves as the county seat. The courthouse cornerstone holds additional history to be shared by those in the future. You will then notice our brick streets on the west and south side of the courthouse. Then there’s the monument to Mr. Van Rensselaer in the Presbyterian Church yard. And so much more. Plus, the community’s support of the Jasper County Historical Society and its museum serves as a great look into our past and realization of just how much our city has and will accomplish. Our community comes to life throughout the year with many events focused on bringing new interest to our city as well as keep our community as close knit as possible. Each event highlights the pride our community has for its downtown, our many parks, and our small-town friendly atmosphere. Town of Wheatfield The Town of Wheatfield was founded in 1883 on land donated to the town by Simon and Mae Thompson. The first post office was opened a year prior to that in 1882. Wheatfield may have gotten its name from the wild rice or swamp grass that grew in the area, which was said to look like a field of wheat. The town was originally a railroad town with the Plymouth, Kankakee and Pacific railroad running through it. The railroad was used to ship wildlife caught by local hunters to the markets in Chicago area. The town is now known for its Sandhill Crane Festival, which features a car show, entertainment, food and crafts. Saint Joseph’s College Saint Joseph’s College has been a landmark in Jasper County since 1867 when the Catholic Diocese purchased the farm south of Rensselear. Since that time, Saint Joseph’s College has gone through many “evolutions,” and 2020 is another. Saint Joseph’s College is now initiating a new beginning with the creations of the Saint Joseph’s University Center and the Saint Joseph’s Career College. These two closely related ventures will allow students to come to the Saint Joseph’s campus – regardless of what their career aspirations are. The Career College will be offering non-degree industry training and industry-recognized certifications. The Career College will host training that will allow individuals to earn the needed certification for a new career, advance in their current career, or need to re-skill to stay current within their chosen field. The needs of the local communities will guide what industry training the Career College will offer – this will ensure students will learn the knowledge and skills that are locally in-demand. The other part of Saint Joseph’s College will be the University Center. The beginnings of the University Center will focus on sequences of classes which will result in a two-year associate degree from an “anchor institution.” These “anchor institutions” will be col-

leges and universities that will be hosting classes on the Saint Joseph’s College campus. The future of the Saint Joseph’s College University Center will include the opportunity for students to continue with their college aspirations of earning a bachelor’s degree by continuing to attend classes on Saint Joseph’s College campus. These junior-senior level college classes could be associated with either another higher education institution or be junior-senior programs developed by Saint Joseph’s College. Saint Joseph’s College will continue to be a cornerstone of Jasper County, and as a new chapter in Saint Joseph’s College begins, they look forward to once again being a vibrant, integral and positive part of our community. • Business Management • Business Fast Track • Cybersecurity • Health Science • Next Level Jobs Visit the website saintjoe.edu or call 219.866.6000 for more information on the classes offered.

STATE GOVERNMENT
Soil & Water Jasper County SWCD In Indiana, a soil and water conservation district (SWCD) is a unit of state government responsible for soil and water conservation programs within its county boundaries. The district provides a means for all interested people in a county to work together for natural resource conservation and development. It’s funded through a variety of sources including county and state appropriations, activities, grants, and private donations. There is a district office in each county in Indiana. The SWCD belongs to the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts and they provide more information on the partnerships needed to be successful in conserving our natural resources. The official governing body of the SWCD consists of five supervisors. Three are elected (one each year for a three-year term) at an annual meeting of land occupiers held in January or February. Two are appointed (also for staggered threeyear terms) by the State Soil Conservation Board based upon recommendations of the leadership in the district. Thus, selection of all five supervisors is based on input from the local people they serve. Identifying local resource concerns and addressing the needs of the community is a priority for the Jasper County SWCDT. his is accomplished by conducting community meetings with the residents who best know the natural resource problems. After priorities are established the district looks for ways in which to address the problems. This may involve developing educational programs or applying for funding to implement conservation practices on private lands.

Jasper County Courthouse The historic Jasper County Courthouse, just celebrating its 125th year October 2021, was built in 1898 and is still in use today. The Jasper County Courthouse that sits in the center of the Rensselaer downtown square is not the first county courthouse. The structure of Bedford limestone, turrets, curving arches and gabled dormers is the third courthouse to house the county government. According to “The Jasper County Courthouse 1896-1996,” in late 1839, a log building was constructed in Newton (Rensselaer). In 1845, a second courthouse was built with a frame building, while in 1857 a third courthouse was built of brick. The third building was damaged by fire that started under mysterious circumstances on Jan. 18, 1865, according to the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana website. It was repaired and continued to serve the county until 1895 when commissioners hired an architect from Fort Wayne to design a fireproof courthouse. Construction for the building began in 1896. County officials were able to move into the completed courthouse in
1898. Since then the courthouse has received continuous upkeep and in 1996 decorative painters restores original interior stencils, gilding, and a 16-color paint scheme in celebration of the courthouse’s 100th birthday. The roof of the courthouse was replaced in 2012 from shingles to slate, that is said to resemble the slate that covered the roof when it was built in 1896 to 1898. Fountain Park Chautauqua The Fountain Park Chautauqua was created in 1895 by Remington Bank president Robert Parker. He envisioned an annual assembly to be held for people to discuss topics including religion, science, literature and the arts that was based on the Chautauqua movement that began in 1874. Chautauqua was a way for smaller communities to gain access to cultural and educational enrichment. Camp was in session during the summer and participants would take classes and enjoy a variety of speakers and entertainers. Arranged in a large loop, the Fountain Park grounds originally contained a large area for tents (permanent cabins would come later), a tabernacle, a hotel and dining room, a shelter house, and other buildings on over 30 acres. At the center of the loop was a large shaded opening that served as a large gathering space and play area. Today, the grounds consist of 17 acres and there are permanent cabins in place of the tents but the remainder

less than $1000 a year, he would contribute $10,000 to build the library.” The city must have a population of at least 1000 citizens. By Carnegie’s deadline of August 25, 1903, those commitments by Rensselaer were met. Carnegie granted the city $12,000 for the Carnegie Library. The Carnegie Library in Rensselaer opened officially on September 4, 1905. The Carnegie building became the Carnegie Center with the owner, the Jasper Foundation. This process was aided by Indiana Landmarks with the help of the Lilly Foundation. It was dedicated as a community cultural center housing the Jasper Foundation and the new Prairie Arts Council. The Carnegie structure was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 17, 1994.
Rensselaer Carnegie Center The history of the library building on Van Rensselaer Street began a little earlier with the 1899 Indiana legislative act that allowed cities and towns to levy a tax for library purposes. Then Rev. C. D. Royce, spurred on by his love of books and hearing of Carnegie Libraries built in Indiana, wrote Andrew Carnegie in 1902 to ask for funding for a new library in Rensselaer. Andrew Carnegie was a philanthropist. After building his wealth, Carnegie devoted the rest of his life to philanthropy and building local libraries, world peace, education, and scientific endeavors. Indiana received the largest number of library grants between 1901 and 1918. About 100 of those Carnegie buildings are still in use as libraries today. Royce received notice from Andrew Carnegie saying “If the city could provide a suitable site and maintain it for not

by an annual federal per pupil subsidy to promote Indiana education, making it a relic of an era of state-church partnership now largely forgotten. Although the building served as the Indian School for only eight years, it did not experience change or alterations until 1937, when it was re-modeled to serve as a residence hall for students at St. Joseph’s College. The exterior of the building remains largely the same, while the interior was thoroughly renovated to accommodate the living quarters of college students. The building is now known on the college’s campus as Drexel Hall. The St. Joseph Indian Normal School was added to the National Register in 1973.
Independence Methodist Church Independence Methodist Church and cemetery is located in open country southeast of Wheatfield. The church was founded in 1839 and closed in 1976. This building was erected in 1872 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The church building is not in use but receives some maintenance. The large adjacent cemetery is cared for.
