Financial Arts, Inc. continues to serve and thrive Financial Arts, Inc. is a thriving Insurance brokerage office in its second generation that specializes in Health Insurance, Medicare Supplements, Life insurance and Annuities. How did this business go from an in-home office to an office in an old house on Halleck Street that people drive to from Monticello, Lafayette, Valparaiso and Dyer? Where insurance agents in Remington, Merrillville, and Hammond send their best customers to get help? It all started back in 1971 when Jack Fagen was approached to sell Life insurance. Jack was 20 years old, in college, and getting married. Jack took the opportunity and learned the business well. Jack and his wife Charlotte moved to DeMotte the next year and bought their first home. About a year later Jack saw that he needed to work for a different company if he was going to be able to make it as an insurance agent. He changed companies and after some initially lean times, he did well and made the list of the top 100 life insurance agents in the country. Things were going well, but Jack saw problems with only being able to offer the products of one company to his customers. He felt the need to specialize for his customers needs by using different companies based on their situation. In 1974 Jack decided to take a leap of faith and opened Financial Arts, Inc. Jack had a business partner at that time, Bob Mount, that many may remember. Bob is the insurance agent that originally asked Jack to start selling life insurance. Opening the business was not easy. As with most new businesses, they struggled. The first office was in the upstairs of the building that has Varsity Sports in it today. They later moved to the building that was the POW WOW Café, that is now where the business Something’s Brewing is located. Then around 1980, Financial Arts moved in to the current location. Things were very rough through that time. Jack said that you have to recall that a bank loan would cost 21 percent interest and taxes were much higher than they are today. People also have to remember some other things about DeMotte at the time. We did not have a Chamber of Commerce or a Rotary Club. Jack was a charter member of each of these groups, as well as president multiple times. Financial Arts, Inc. survived that rough time, and thrived. In 1988, Jack bought out his partner. Business was good, and Jack made some key decisions along the way. In 1992, Hillary Clinton was taking on insurance reform. Jack decided to try and be part of the solution and work with the politicians in trying to make sure that we could come up with a solution that could benefit the most people. While other insurance agents decided to leave the health insurance business, Jack jumped in head first. Financial Arts, became known as one of the leading employee benefits and individual health insurance firms in northwest Indiana. This led to some great success for Financial Arts. In 2001, Jack's son, Dan, decided to come to work

From left to right Karen, Jack, Dan and Val. for Financial Arts. Dan had been a licensed life and health insurance agent since 1996 and had a bachelor’s degree in financial planning. Dan learned the ropes from Jack and this allowed Jack some more free time. In 2005, Valerie, Jack's daughter decided to come to work for Financial Arts full time. She had already been working on the accounting aspect of the company. Valerie had a bachelor’s degree in finance. So when she came in as a full-time employee she was given administrative assistant duties as well as the accounting work. In 2006, Medicare Part D was sold for the first time. Dan was responsible for all of the Medicare Part D sales, but Valerie was running all of the quotes and really understanding how the program worked. It became evident that Valerie really had a knack for working with individuals with Medicare eligibility. Valerie still does the accounting aspect, but works almost exclusively with Medicare eligible customers on Medicare supplements, and Medicare Advantage plans. Valerie has done speaking engagements for local professional groups about Medicare and supplements. Dan and Jack were now left to be able to focus on Life insurance, Health insurance, and employee benefits. As many of you are aware a little law was passed

in 2009 — the Patient Protection and Accountable Care Act (PPACA), later changed to the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Jack made the decision again to embrace the coming changes. Dan became certified in Health Care Reform studies. Dan has taught continuing education classes on this topic for attorneys, CPAs, Certified Financial Planners and Insurance agents. Dan has also spoke to senior level classes at Purdue regarding this topic. The one thing that can be said for this law is that it is ever-changing. One thing that has never changed, though, at Financial Arts, Inc. is that the customer does always come first. There are many times when you go by the Financial Arts building at three in the morning and will see the lights on with one of us working on trying to get a customer problem resolved. All these items are why so many people drive past other insurance agents, to come to Financial Arts, Inc. In DeMotte. People are coming to see someone who specializes in what they do, is honest, and to meet with someone who actually cares about their situation. We also would like to say that we really are proud to be part of this great community and none of our success would be possible if it wasn't for our customers and the recommendations to their friends and family. It has been an honor and privilege to serve the community and we hope to continue for many more years.

Make Anytime Fitness Hebron & DeMotte your fitness provider Anytime Fitness-Hebron & DeMotte are two clubs that have a team devoted to helping their members achieve their fitness goals. They are the only clubs in Northwest Indiana that provide a total eight-week fitness plan to get you on your way, at no additional charge. A coach is available to help motivate and make sure you are able to make this very important step. Most clubs sign you up, show you the equipment and move on to the next person who walks through the door. Not at Anytime Fitness. You get a lot of what the big box clubs offer but at a smaller club price. The bonus is the staff that cares. The clubs’ fitness team is passionate in this endeavor. They have some of the best people at the clubs, ready to help you. Trainers Di Ette, Laura and Jayme are three top-notch motivators who have a track record of success. They all live the fitness life. They practice what they preach and know how to help you. Nationally certified with top certifications, they have the expertise to develop the right program and see that you complete it with success. Their clients are testaments to their ability. Not all fitness clubs are equal. You can have a lot of cool equipment but you have to figure out how to engage if you want to really change the health of the people you serve. Club managers Kevin and Ryan are super at accomplishing this.

These talented guys are there to provide you with a quality club and make sure you are comfortable in your home away from home. Lori and her crew of talented housekeeping staff work diligently to make sure the club you use is clean and ready to go. Compliments aren't few and far between. Member surveys constantly show the appreciation of the membership and guests for the cleanliness of the two clubs. It's easier to engage in a fresh, clean environment motivated by wonderful people who care about you and your goals. The clubs are open 24 hours, 7 days a week for members, but there are staffed and unstaffed hours. With a full complement of state of the art fitness equipment, each club is a wonderful opportunity to improve your overall fitness. In addition, both Anytime Fitness Clubs offer a full selection of retail products that include preworkouts, meal replacement shakes and much more. You don't have to be a member to purchase these products. These products can help you with your nutritional needs. Do you stop by a fast food business every morning on the way to work because you don't have time to make breakfast? A protein shake with fruit and milk can be a wonderful replacement. Ditch the extra calories of that sausage biscuit for a flavor-packed filling shake. Need an ener-

gy boost? Pick up one of the tasty energy drinks. Anytime Fitness Hebron and DeMotte knows it takes more than a treadmill or elliptical. These products can be the missing link to your fitness success. Fitness Technology is dramatically changing. It used to be that TVs on the wall were state of the art. Now, each piece of cardio equipment can have its own personal video screen and can be interactive with iPads, Fitbits and many other technology devices. No matter what equipment a club has today, tomorrow, something new will come out. You can’t have everything that’s out there, so you have to have good programs and staff. You have to focus on customer service and motivation. You have to provide an inviting environment. This is the passion of Anytime Fitness Hebron and DeMotte. Both locations are owned and operated by Dale and Jennifer Tuck, two people who have spent a lifetime teaching and motivating others and want you to have the highest attainable quality of life through improved fitness. No more excuses. Make the time. Take the next step. Give yourself the opportunity to be there for your family. You only have one life. Make it a healthy one. Let Anytime Fitness Hebron and DeMotte be your total fitness provider.

In 1867, thriving furniture business owner Peter Geisen began making and selling coffins in his furniture store. This was a popular thing for furniture store owners to do during this time period, as funerals became more formal. There was a commercial need for caskets, and this was when the Geisen family entered the funeral industry. "Geisen Furniture & Undertaking" opened in downtown Crown Point. Peter Geisen's son, Charles, joined his father in the business and both became a few of the first licensed embalmers in the state of Indiana. Peter and Charles built the first Geisen Funeral Home at 109 N. East Street in Crown Point. Two years later, Charles' son Herbert and his wife Edna graduated from embalming school in Indianapolis and opened a funeral home in Gary. Larry Geisen, Bob's son, joined his father and became the 5th generation owner of Geisen Funeral Home. In 2007 Larry and his wife Kim built a state-ofthe-art funeral home in Crown Point with a full-service reception centre, an on-site crematory and a Pet Loss Centre. They also added a location in Hebron in 2004 and purchased the location in Merrillville from Larry's cousin Scott in 2008. In 2012, Larry and Kim acquired Carlisle Funeral Home in Michigan City, renaming it "Geisen-Carlisle Funeral & Cremations Services". For five years now, Geisen Funeral Home has earned the Pursuit of Excellence Award from the National Funeral Director's Association. This prestigious award is given to funeral homes who go "above and beyond" to serve their families and the community. For almost 150 years, the Geisen family and staff have been doing just that: going above and beyond and raising the bar in funeral service excellence.

Long's Gifts continues to evolve to fit the needs of its customers

First Hometown Mortgage provides variety of services

The business now known as Long’s Gifts, located on North Front Street in Rensselaer, has evolved several times, from a pharmacy to a soda fountain shop to, finally, a gift shop. The store finds that its strength lies in its appeal to many interests and ages, selling toys with educational value. That said, its biggest strength is in having wonderful employees. Its owners and staff are most proud of the friends they have made in the community over the years. Long’s Gifts is unique in its variety of available merchandise, from kitchen to gift items for all

First Hometown Mortgage, located on South Halleck Street in DeMotte, started business in DeMotte in 2004, and has seen a lot of repeat business since then. It handles mortgage transactions, for purchase or refinancing, as well as reverse mortgages. A reverse mortgage is a federally regulated program for senior homeowners, which allows them to get paid through home equity. Access to this is allowed, without having to make a mortgage payment, through a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage. And seniors have guaranteed access to their money no matter what happens to their lender or their home’s value. The original homeowner still owns the home if they take a reverse mortgage, but they pledge it as collateral. A reverse mortgage continues, even if the loan exceeds the value of the home, thanks to federal insurance. The line of

credit will still be available and monthly disbursements a senior may have set up will be sent to them. Today’s reverse mortgages are highlyregulated by state and federal laws to make them safe and to protect a senior using one. Such regulations include that they retain the title of their home, no equity share is allowed so that the lender doesn’t slowly take over their home and fees and costs are federally regulated. With a reverse mortgage, you receive cash from your lender, as lump sum up front, as monthly installments or as a line of credit that grows over time. As long as you live in your home, you never have to pay off a single dollar of the loan. The cash you receive from the loan is your money and you can use it the way you want. First Hometown Mortgage can be contacted at 219-987-4493 or at firsthometown@netnitco.net.

The law firm of Beaver & Beaver P.C. is pleased to announce that Attorney Lori S. James has joined the firm. Ms. James will practice law with Attorney Eric J. Beaver. Lori James was born and raised in Cutler, Indiana, near Kokomo, and graduated from Carroll High School in 2006. She attended St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer and graduated in 2009, having earned her degree in political science. Ms. James enrolled at the Valparaiso University Law School in Valparaiso, Indiana where she received her doctorate in jurisprudence in 2012. Ms. James worked as the child support administrator in the Benton County Prosecutor’s Office, served as a law clerk with the Jasper Circuit Court, and has worked for and practiced law with a number of attorneys in the area. As an attorney, Ms. James has developed expertise in family law—navigating the contours of divorces, guiding couples through adoptions, and serving as guardian ad litem to advocate for the best interests of children. Ms. James also has maintained a voluminous criminal law practice focusing

JAMES on representing people who are charged with felonies, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and expungements of criminal records. She also serves as President of the Jasper County Bar Association. Ms. James is married to Andrew James of Rensselaer, and together they have two sons, Tytus and Atticus. “Lori brings a lot to the law firm. She is dedicated to her clients and to the practice of law,” said Eric Beaver. Attorney James R. Beaver established the firm in 1970 under the name Halleck & Beaver P.C. along with retired

U.S. House Representative Charles A. Halleck (d. 1986). Jim Beaver is retiring from the practice of law. “I was blessed to practice law with my father for over five years, and I am happy that Lori James is here to build on her strong foundation,” said Eric Beaver. Beaver & Beaver P.C. is located at 201 W. Washington St. in Rensselaer, the same location where Eric’s grandfather, Dr. E.R. Beaver, established his medical practice in 1946. The firm’s telephone number is 219866-4171.

Yancey's House of Carpet still going strong after 36 years Yancey's House of Carpet, located on Wicker Avenue in Cedar Lake, was opened by Rich and Carole Yancey in 1980. The owners have strived to operate a successful company ever since. They poured sweat and tears into the familyoperated store to make it what it is today. The owners believe their biggest strength is their knowledgeable staff and great installation crew. New this year are beautiful carpet patterns. Yancey's is making more area rugs than ever with these beautiful pieces. Old fashioned courtesy in a new fashioned way is what makes Yancey's House of Carpet stand out from other businesses, where the staff and owners believe in treating their customers like family. This is especially important since customers are inviting Yancey's into their homes. Yancey's is proud of making it through the recession in the 1980s, and that the business is still standing proud today after the crash in 2008.

Yancey's runs a variety of carpet sales all year long.

Hollywood Studio offers latest styles at reasonable prices Hollywood Studio opened its doors back in 2009. From the beginning, it was a modest shop that offered haircuts at reasonable prices. In recent years, we’ve been able to watch the quaint little shop turn into a beautiful, full service salon that offers the latest, most up-to-date styles of haircuts and color, a full service nail salon and both lay down and stand up tanning beds, as well as spray tanning. At the helm of Hollywood Studio is Tracy Wilson, a certified master stylist and colorist with over 25 years of experience. Wilson is the driving force behind the success of Hollywood Studio, but she takes great pride in her very knowledgeable staff as well. “I’m very proud of the growth of the salon, but I have to tell you, I’m even more proud of my stylists," she said. "To watch them develop their craft, learn and grow their clientele is what makes all the hard work worth every minute.” She continued, “We firmly believe in continuing education here. When there are new products or new trends, we are on it. We want to be able to offer our clients the latest styles and trends.” When asked what makes Hollywood Studio different, Wilson added, “we are open seven days a week for our customer’s convenience. We know how busy life can get, so when we opened we decided to offer our services all week long for those people who have to work full time.” The company is based on the belief that its customers' needs are of the utmost importance. The entire team is committed to meeting those needs by listening to each and every one of its clients and exceeding their expectations. As a result, a high percentage of the salon's business is from repeat customers and referrals. We would love the opportunity to earn your trust and deliver you the best service in the industry. Currently, Hollywood Studio offers buy one, get one half off on their hair care products, and Thursday is take $3 off any haircut, (except the already reduced kid’s cuts).
