Rug Construction Types
HAND-WOVEN | FLAT-WOVEN
The hand weaving technique is renowned for its lack of pile. Requiring expert knowledge, skilled artisans are necessary for this traditional method of weaving that produces flat rugs with highly detailed patterns.
HAND-TUFTED
First the design is stenciled onto a piece of canvas tightly stretched across a frame. Then using a tufting gun, yarn is passed through the canvas in a ‘V’ shape. The yarn is then cut and shaved to ensure equal height. This technique allows the skilled artisans to create curved patterns and piles of different heights and densities.
TABLE-TUFTED
Also known as machine tufted, this technique is similar to the hand tufted process, but uses a modified sewing machine to do the tufting. The motorized tufter can regulate speed and number of tufts per inch, allowing for different densities, designs, and faster production times.
POWER-LOOMED
Machine-made rugs are constructed through thousands of reels of thread that are fed into one giant computer-controlled mechanical loom, which quickly weaves the rug in the chosen pattern. These rugs often feature extremely precise designs and generally are the most affordable.
