HUMAN-SCALED HIGHWAY Duration: October 2018 ~ January 2019 Type: Urban Design Location: Tongzhou District, Beijing , China Individual Work

The developing mode of Chinese cities is very unique, because of the unbalance between regional economic development, a large number of people are gathering in first-tier cities, with very sharp urban problems coming up at the same time. Beijing has doubled and redoubled its urban area in the past 50 years to accommodate a large number of immigrants, people are living in the newly-built suburbs but work in the city center, the daily tidal commuters have caused serious congestion problems, the road system is difficult to adapt to such a huge traffic flow. Due to the extension of the commuting distance, private cars become major transportation tools, the road has been built broader to satisfy people’s outing requirements. However, people’s requirement for a bigger activity space has become more pressing because of the huge pressure from work. In order to make up the shortage of pedestrian space, the existing roads need to be rebuilt. Considering the size of the pedestrian and the use needs of the site crowd, the traffic congestion problem will be improved and meanwhile the lack of people’s activity space can be solved, and it is more convenient for people’s outing.

TERRITORY BACKGROUND

In recent years, China's real estate-style urbanization has made our city ruthlessly suburbanized. The building is built higher, but the urban population density is declining. “Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei integration” is the most representative phenomenon.China's urban construction should not be held in the hands of the government and planners, but more people who have a relationship with the city.

CURRENT SITUATION

According to the style and function of the street building, the entire road is segmented by combining the city skyline, the people in the site and their activities are observed, and the most distinctive section is intercepted for further design.

SURROUNDINGS

Office worker busy taking the subway

Traffic problems are never just traffic problems. Any move to improve motor vehicle driving and parking conditions will only attract more motor vehicles, making the widest road a spectacular parking lot. When millions of people go to work from the suburbs to the city center every day, they will definitely become congested.

Old couple hanging out ,shopping

The city should be built for "humanity," but our city seems to be designed for "cars." Auto cities can be found everywhere in today's cities, especially in the new districts. The roads are very spacious, while the bicycle lanes and sidewalks are inaccessible, and all human activities are “hidden”. The new city is the scale of the car, not the scale of the person.

Busy working employees of large companies

Yo u n g g i r l s shopping with friends

The city of Beijing seems to be very young, and the rapid passage of urban space has prevented many vulnerable groups from walking. So we have to create a “human” city, an urban space where people can live and walk. The 5Km x 5Km block of the site is selected as a sample, and the topological analysis function of Depthmap is used to simulate the traffic conditions of the road under different topological distances and different radiation ranges under ideal conditions. Compared with the status quo, the congestion situation in the middle of the site is relatively obvious, and the gap between the status quo is small. with friends to recreation center

SITE LOCATION The site is located on the southeast side of Beijing. It is the main urban trunk road of the Beijing Subc e n t e r. I t h a s a t o t a l length of about 2000m and functions as both urban traffic roads and life roads.

DATA SOURCES

In order to create the most suitable way of travel for the people in the venue, we observed the activities of people at different times, and screened for reference to occupations and travel purposes, such as cleaners, housewives, couriers and so on. In the end, it is divided into three categories: live, work and leisure. The single sidewalk form makes the walking route of the crowd assimilated. However, due to the difference in the travel purpose and destination, the speed of the crowd is very different, which will inevitably cause mutual interference on the streamline.

The source is the residents of the nearby residential areas, and there are many people from the east-west roads. The destination is concentrated in shops and supermarkets, as well as community entrances. Concentrated on the east side of the hotel and foot bath center, a few from the west side of the store. The activity time is concentrated and the purpose is the strongest, so the streamline is also the clearest. There is no clear source and end point. This group of people has the slowest speed, the streamline is complex, there is no clear distribution, and it is not affected by time. It is the most variable factor in the site.

LOCAL PLAN

I created relatively rich terrain in the square area in front of the commercial building, and combined with trees, pools, squares and other elements to create diversified spatial activities.Nearby residents and workers, as well as passers-by,they can all find their own recreational space here. At the same time, the underground part of the area are used as an underground parking lot. People who reach the underground bus station can also directly enter the main square through the ladder.

LOCAL PERSPECTIVE There are serious problems of insufficient parking spaces and activity space in the site. In order to solve this problem, the above ground and underground space are fully utilized to form a three-layer transportation network. Put motor vehicles, parking lots and buses on the lowest floor to solve the problem of mixed traffic. The ground floor serves as a recreation space, creating different activity Spaces with water, plants and topography. The upper layer are the viaduct for fast passage, which also ACTS as a street bridge, allowing pedestrians and nonmotor vehicles to pass through the site quickly. At the same time, the special shape of the viaduct also divide a lot of different Spaces, forming a shadow for the surrounding shops to provide outdoor seating and other places.

PLANTING DESIGN

AROUSE THE LOST CORNERS Duration: March 2019 ~ June 2019 Type: Streetscape Design Location: CBD Melbourne, Australia Individual Work

The urban development in the advanced countries is approaching perfect, so the design area that can be used is very limited, after a long time and several times of urban development, many large-scale cities are carrying out various policies to restrain the speed of the city expansion, so that the cities will be maintaining in a most livable scale. Therefore, for a livable city like Melbourne, how to make the city meet the requirement of city residents more optimally and cope with the increasing population growth rate has become the most urgent problem to be solved at this stage. However, even if the utilization degree of urban land has been maximized, there are still some unused corner areas, which are neglected due to their small size. In the central CBD area, full of high-rise buildings, these corner areas appear extremely valuable. As an immigrant city, the immigrants in Melbourne have built this city together. Every year, a steady stream of young people injects new vitality into the city. Therefore, in this design, I took them as the cutting point, through studying their routine, I designed architectures suitable for their daily work and life in the CBD area they daily live.

URBAN EXPANSION HISTORY

DISTRIBUTION AND INFLUENCE RANGE OF ATTRACTION POINTS

Melbourne has a long tradition of managing its urban development and planning has evolved in stages. From the 1920s to the 1950s, Melbourne began to expand rapidly with the increase in population brought about by international migration and the post-war fertility rate.At the same time, international manufacturing and services investment in Melbourne also contributed to the city's growth. After the 1980s, metropolitan sprawl was minimized by reducing the number of new residential development sites on the periphery and increasing population in existing sites. The policy is entitled "Urban Consolidation". After 2000, the consequences of urban sprawl included serious air pollution problems and difficulties in accessing public services in some new settlements in the outer suburbs."Compact cities" offer more potential benefits than "dispersed cities".Therefore, the latest Melbourne 2030 plan indicates that the Melbourne metropolitan area will be more compact and better managed in the future, and urban sprawl will be alleviated.

The 20st Century

The 21st Century

Since the second half of the 20th century, Melbourne has carried out a series of humanized transformation of urban roads and public Spaces, which has significantly improved the attractiveness of urban environment and spatial vitality. Until now, the population of Melbourne has been growing rapidly for a long time, and the urban construction focuses on the intensive use of space, establishing a close connection between public space and public life.

POPULATION DISTRIBUTION OF MELBOURNE RESIDENTS

According to the research of the entire Suburb area, it can be seen that the activities of the population are focus on the CBD district and its surrounding areas, where the destinations they have to pass every day and attractive points are agminated.Different people have different kinds of attractive content due to their variety lifestyles. At the same time, due to differences in content, the influence radius of attractiveness is also large and small. At the same time people spend at each point of attraction varies. When these attractions are mapped to the space needs of the population, they are reflected in different spatial forms and activity areas.

After years of development, the distribution of urban population in Melbourne presents a "doughnut" trend. The central CBD is rarely inhabited, mostly for art centers, business districts, universities and office clusters. The low-income population is concentrated in the outer suburbs, while the highincome population is more concentrated in the outer suburbs. This study focused on low-income people living in suburban apartments.

FOUR ROUTES

BACKPACKERS

Identify the 4 groups of people in the final study and rank them according to their time spent in the city.Although they have different identities, both as transient migrants, their lifestyles would have many intersecting and overlapping parts. Therefore, I determined the attrctive points they would pass frequently according to their characteristics and living habits, and separately designed their daily routes and studied their connections between 4 routes.

WANDERING ARTIST

FOREIGN WORKERS

TIME: 1 MONTH As the most livable city in the world, Melbourne has a large number of cultural, artistic and natural attractions, attracting large numbers of tourists to visit every year. However, due to the short stay, such people's understanding of the city is still limited to sightseeing, mainly focusing on some famous scenic spots. So for this group, visual attractiveness is particularly important. TIME: 3 MONTHS Melbourne has a very harmonious artistic atmosphere, large numbers of artists choose to place their own exhibitions and galleries here.It is an attractive art capital for artists from all over the world, both for exhibition or learning. This kind of people focus more on their own field, and their understanding of the city is where they most interested in. There is no uniform standard for their behavior. TIME: 1 YEAR As a city of immigrants, workers in Melbourne prefer to work in such a city that is tolerant to the foreign population. As short-term workers, they understand the city from the perspective of their daily life, which is more inclined to local residents. However, due to the requirements of work and the limitation of staying time, their understanding of the city focuses on the daily work and life.

FOREIGN STUDENTS TIME: 2-3 YEARS The number of foreign students in Melbourne has been growing rapidly in recent years.Compared with other groups, they spend the longest time in the city and have sufficient leisure time, so they have a deeppest understanding of the city. The status of students also means that most of these p e o p l e a r e y o u n g e r, m o r e energetic and creative, and willing to try new experiences.

ROUTE, SCENE AND SPACE REQUIREMENTS

People's memory is pieced together from the scenes he has experienced. Therefore, people's impression and understanding of a city are also generated by the events that happened to them and spaces they pass through every day.If a person's activities are limited in 1km² , his understanding of the city is only limited in events within 1km². Therefore, due to differences in living habits, walking routes and time they stayed, each group of people has different understandings of cities and demands for diverse spaces.

SPACE FORM AND SITE SELECTION

Main Roads

Space Form

Melbourne 2030 plans to make the city more compact in the future, but urban sprawl will be mitigated. This is consistent with current international thinking about the benefits of compact cities. The expansion of the metropolitan area will be limited by new space acquired through the redevelopment of the metropolitan area interior. This will be part of the overall city management approach. Urban sprawl leaves lots of "marginal" space, often unused because it is too small. Therefore, this design hopes to enhance the vitality of these areas, make full use of these small Spaces, and "make full use of them", which is also in line with the strategic direction of Melbourne 2030 to fully limit urban expansion. Buildings

Side Walk

I selected the four nodes in the four routes designed with more crossover or parallelism, and compared the four different spatial forms, including the combination of linear space and the splicing of planar space etc. Finally, I chose Little La Troube St, which is located in the center of Melbourne and near RMIT.A diverse population can bring more potential forms of activity.

SPATIAL TYPE REQUIREMENT

The daily life of different kinds of people produces various types of activities, and it will derive different space requirements. In this step, I summarized some common activity types, and allocated their activity needs according to the habits of each group of people I studied before, summarized and screened them, and finally determined the composition of space types within the site. In order to determine the proportion of each kind of space demand, the area of each kind of space is obtained by combining the composition proportion of various activities in the city and corresponding activity types.

Combined with the ratio of various attraction points in the city summarized in the early stage, it is mapped on the spatial composition, which corresponds to the difference in area and space requirements.Due to the huge differences in people's activity demands at different times, in order to make full use of the space within the site, the site is set as a "tidal" site that can change the spatial organization through the change of demands. The site is divided into a 1MX1M grid, and the area required for each type of activity is arranged according to functional requirements.

EVANESCENT "HOLLOW VILLAGE" Duration: July 2019 ~ Septenber 2019 Type: Landscape Design Location: Luanping County,Chengde City ,Hebei Province,China Individual Work

The future development of rural areas is an inevitable problem in the process of urbanization, China is in the process of rapid urbanization, under the background of a large number of rural populations migrating to cities, many rural areas have to seek their own development direction. However, due to the long history of China’s development, the process of rural areas differs from one another, except for some ancient towns with a long history, satellite cities and villages with pillar industries, most villages are bound to disappear in the end because of geographical and humanity factors. While looking in the light of economic development, this inevitable trend is not necessarily bad. People leave the backward environment to pursue a better life, which is the basic pursuit of people's life. To a certain extent, it also eases the management burden of relevant departments. Therefore, the major problem to be solved in this design is how to plan to naturally degenerate the "hollow village" where the young population is gradually decreasing and make it return to nature, and to maintain the living needs of the remaining population in the process.

CHENGDE CITY

When my grandfather was in the generation, people's dependence on the river almost penetrated all the links in life. Whether it was transportation, livelihood or daily life, it was closely related to the river. By the generation of mothers, transportation and livelihoods have shifted with the decrease of river water volume. Ships and business have slowly disappeared. Land transportation has replaced it, and agriculture has become a new means of making a living. With the development of economic science and technology, to my generation, every household has convenient tap water. People no longer need the help of rivers, and they are not required to separate the relationship between rivers and people.

Most of the villages around the Luan River are built close to the river, and the riverside is also dotted with agricultural areas such as livestock farms and cultivated fields. However, due to the lack of a good recycling system, the environment in which residents live depends on the serious damage. Connect the important nodes in the site and find the areas where the conflicts are fierce and takes the key point of design.

1970 When I was a child, the Weihe River was a lot smaller. I could only do a carriage when I was away from home. The second water tank in my home was brought by the horse. The river is clear and can bathe, catch fish, and people often wash clothes and dishes.

INFORMATION IS ARCHITECTURE Duration: June 2018 ~ August 2018 Type: Landscape Architecture Design Location: Wukesong,Beijing ,China Individual Work

Nowadays, as the informatization is developing rapidly, great changes have taken place in people’s living style, no one ever knows the directions of science and technology in the future. But as a designer, I can use my creativity ability to imagine how people’s living environment will change upside down, as well as discussing such a problem: the process of modernization is increasingly speeding up, is it too hasty for people’s life? Will the great changes brought by information era be overloaded? Whether we really need all these kinds of changes provided by informatization or not? Therefore, in my design, I use some new technology to enrich people’s experience of daily life, and at the same time, to avoid the problem of information overload caused by information era. The possibilities come with the 5G era is unknown, but the instant information sharing technology makes VR, AR and other ideas become reality, creating more accurate services for people. When it is applied to the design of landscape architecture, it means everyone can be able to enjoy a more personalized activity type, and a more accurate information, which may redefine the functions carried by the architecture.

INFORMATION AGE: INFORMATION WORLD AND PHYSICAL WORLD In the past few centuries, the development of science and technology has made the information dissemination change dramatically, and the popularity of electronic products has made it revolutionary. Is the world we live in under the control of information overload? Therefore, in this design, I try to explore a new way to express abstract information through physical means, and combine the new technology to improve the user's participation.

SOURCE OF IDEAS

This is the real-time online number of people in China's largest instant social software QQ (04:00/12:00/21:30), which accounts for nearly a quarter of the Chinese population. Smartphones are the main source of information on people, and information explosion has become a serious social problem.

SITE SELECTION

In the era of information explosion, people are often forced to find themselves in such an environment: surrounded by many false news and giant screens, feeling a strong sense of insecurity. But I hope that the existing information is not limited to the previous form, and the information can be presented in a new form.

The experimental site selected a large commercial district in Beijing, which is one of the most concentrated areas of advertising information cards. The huge daily traffic also provides enough samples for the experiment.

RESEARCH PROCESS

In this study, we introduced a particle swarm optimization algorithm in order to explore the relationship between information and people. Computers are used to simulate the collective behavior of particle swarms and to select relevant algorithms based on existing conditions. Study the movement towards particle swarms with different conditions, analogous to simulating the behavior of people in different environments.

SEP Separation force of particles

COH Cohesion force of particles

ALI Align force of particles

DEADGUY

People will stop when they receive the attraction. These attractive points are the deadguys in the system. Each ad has its scope of influence, which is the cluster distance. If the distance is too large, they will not be affected. If the distance is too small, they will stay. At the same time, people that stop had become a new attraction point to attract the crowds, and people will gather together in large Numbers due to this advertising effect.

After that, by analyzing the field research data, the corresponding data information of the system is replaced to obtain a parameter range of the final generated combined model.

REPELLER

In addition to the force of the particles themselves, they are also affected by external forces.People are attracted to other things besides relationships. For example, advertisements will focus on busy intersections because people will focus more on these busy areas. These entrances and exits including subway stations are also important variables that affect the number of people that gather.

MODEL SYSTEM

In the model, each particle represents a freely moving individual, and each type of particle has its own characteristics. In this simulation, it represents a billboard or a person. When the entire system tends to be stable, it can be wired between them, which can represent the distance and spatial position between each billboard or person.

START AND END OF THE SYSTEM The initial particle swarms are dispersed throughout the system, and there are three internal forces (Separation,Cohesion,Align) between them that give them a certain tendency to move and keep this pattern running. This is the basic property of particles, and the SCA of different types of particle groups is different. However, when subjected to the external force of the repeller, the trajectory of the particles is disturbed. When the distance between the freely moving particles and the deadguy is within the range of the cluster distance, the particles stop moving and the system tends to stabilize.

SELECT AND DETERMINE EXPERIMENTAL DATA

Commercial billboards are a traditional way of expressing information. They are effective ways of disseminating information about strong visual and auditory effects that influence the crowd to move toward the direction of their guidance. But it also brings a lot of useless information, so its delivery is inefficient. According to different types of road space, the site is divided into different square areas as sample blocks. Depending on the store, each store in the store is categorized by business type. The interaction between the advertising information on each store is explored by referring to the combination of each area, and the spatial distance between similar and different types of advertisements is recorded as a sample analysis.

SAMPLE According to the business characteristics, they were divided into 5 categories, and the number and distribution of the website is calculated separately. These are the objective conditions that affect the distribution of advertising.

SEP The average of the minimum distances between stores of the same type of function is the value of S , indicating the minimum repulsive force . Represent the minimum distance that similar stores can coexist .

COH The average distance between stores of the same type are the range of C. It is the best choice for the right type of store to operate reasonably, representing a competitive environment without conflict.

ALI The average distance between stores with different business functions are the range of A. Shops with different types of features have a weak competitive relationship and there is a tendency to aggregate.

Different combinations form the shape of the different end connection The commercials of the place are combined with pairs, and the distance between the two is calculated based on the square of the surface previously divided by the space.

Place the planar connection in the site and calculate the actual distance in three-dimensional space

SELECTION OF "STAR PARTICLE"

According to the relation between space distance and S, A and C obtained from the previous step. The simulated connection mode is applied to the actual site to measure the space distance between two advertising positions.Take their average as the final data source, the exact values of S, A, and C are obtained by appropriate scaling. I measured and calculated each block of the previous step, and selected two blocks here for specific explanation.

Does it have a voice?

Is it static?

Advertisements like people, have a tendency to converge on specific areas.Suppose the advertising information is a set of living particles, they will have a "star effect." The most dynamic individuals in the field are the "star particles" in the particle swarm, which have the property of attracting other particles to gather around them.Due to their own size, color, sound and other properties, the attractiveness is also different, they're the deadguys of the first step operation.

DYNAMIC SIMULATION OF STAR EFFECT

When the cluster distance is small, the particle spacing is relatively close, forming a regular ordered structure. In addition, the smaller the cluster distance, the closer the clusters are.

When the cluster distance gets larger, the stable particle groups will be disordered.

DYNAMIC SIMULATION OF THE REPELLER 01

In addition to the forces between the particles, the external forces also affect the morphology of the particle population. According to research, the entrance to t h e l a r g e s t t r a ff i c v o l u m e has greatly affected the way advertising is arranged. To simulate the appeal to the ad portal, a repeller is placed at each entrance. The size of the user traffic is a very attractive range of each repulsion.

The trajectory of a particle is similar to the shape of a line between two vertices, and the position of the particle group is close to the geometric center of the shape. Keep the number of repellers unchanged and change the impact. As the force increases, the volume of the particle group decreases.

QUADRATIC OPERATION Because the host being directed is a crowd, crowd variables are added to the system. The results of the first step are executed multiple times and overlap. Get the layout of the advertising information on the ideal state. Most advertising messages tend to cluster around star particles, while new attraction points appear after multiple stacks. These new points and star particles together constitute a new advertising message that attracts people. This is also the repeller for the second operation. The population is divided into three categories according to the elderly, youth and children. The ratio of the three particles is adjusted based on the population data onto the survey. Change the distance between the repeller and choose the most appropriate value of the shape.

SUPERPOSITION OF THE RESULTS Import the results of the last run for the program, count it a few times, and summarize the rules. The results of the four calculations are selected to perform the final shape generation.

MORPHOGENESIS SCREEN ---TYPE OF BUSINESS Each display replaces the advertising information on a store. The advertisement can be used for each individual service. It is no longer isolated from the location of the store, but is dynamically connected.

FRAME ---INFORMATION FLOW The framework is mainly to physically support the entire system while creating a richer space. Each line carries an advertising information stream as a guiding route to accurately serve the crowd.

TARGET POINT ---LOCATION OF STORE Each point is the location of a store, and it is also the end of a guide. People are successfully guided to these points of the first two steps of the guide, when a complete boot process is completed.

RENDERING EXPRESSION It is a vibrant and promising area, often hosting a variety of recreational activities, you can see that young people are always trying to find a new way of life. The reconstructed structure is not only used to guide the crowd, but also looks more novel and attractive. It splits up the large open Spaces within the site to create richer Spaces for different types of people. The visualization of advertisements combined with new technologies, such as the visual expression of AR display screens and guidance for specific groups, are also more conducive to making information dissemination more personalized and accurate.

The entire system divides the public space and creates more vibrant small spaces, provide multiple places for crowded cluster activities

The whole system are connected. I hope that the masses will be more involved in the process of reaching the destination, similar to a kind of exploration experience.

SHADOW-SHAPE CITY Duration: January 2021 ~ September 2021 Type: Urban Design Location: London Group Work (Selected personal works)

As cities are constantly evolving, the change of road networks, infrastructure and built forms leading towards the reconfiguration of urban spaces. In the Age of Information, with the large amount of data transmitting through the urban environment daily, such changes are largely affected the invisible data layers, seeing as the ‘ghost’ twin of our city – the shadow. The fluidity of city and the beauty its ‘shadow’, both physically and metaphorically, should be revealed and praised in the design process of the urban environment.‘Shadow’, from our perception, is the unseen quality of the city that is unusual and derelict. It refers to the figurative shadow, the digital aspect of the city that recording the existing and emerging urban issues, of which the aesthetics as immaterial layer is hidden, awaiting to be revealed. The project aims to study such controversial qualities of how we defined ‘shadow’ urban space, by bringing in the bridge that not only establish physical links, but also connecting places via virtual networks. It will test and try to answer the question: how does the ‘shadow’ shape the city?

ENVIRONMENT TRANSCRIPTION INTO THE MODEL The agents will respond to attributes of the environment such as physical barriers or infrastructure by adopting their behavior to the features of the modeled environment. These shadows defined as attractors and centroids as initial positions of agents in the cell grid and these attractors influence behavior of agents in the flow layer. The territory will operate with a predefined capacity of the shadow for the selected number of agents, while the population of agents is characterized by its objectives for a specific boundary number of places. The environment defined by the cell clusters will operate with proper basic capacities.
