Senior Life

There’s no doubt about it, regular exercise is an important part of living a healthy and balanced life. We can all recall when we were kids, when it felt like you could run as fast as the wind, and nothing could ever hurt you. Over time, we learn that’s not exactly the case. If you don’t use your muscles, they don’t stick around. With age comes added difficulty for doing even mundane activities. This is true especially for seniors, who are at added risk for muscle atrophy and chronic health problems due to inactivity.

According to research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), Americans 18 and older are exercising now more than ever before. Financial concerns, accessibility and scheduling are some of the reasons frequent exercise can be a challenge for seniors. Fortunately, there are programs that aim to bridge the gap between elders and appropriate exercise routines. One such program is SilverSneakers, a national fitness initiative that has partnered with more than 13,000 fitness locations across the country. The classes are often covered by insurance, or are otherwise very affordable compared to most gym memberships, which makes them substantially easier for retirees to afford.

Resolution Execution

Someone asked me the other day if I’d made any New Year resolutions. Of course, I haven’t. The first month of the year doesn’t seem to be the best time to make drastic changes. In cold weather, I’d much rather stay comfortable with a tried-and-true self-improvement project, like reading a good mystery or tackling lace knitting. That doesn’t mean I’m not open to bettering myself, just that I’m open to doing it any time throughout the year. It also means that I’m beyond focusing on the things that are “missing” or “wrong” in my life. I am, however, always ready to be inspired and explore new things, like brushing up on my high school Spanish. If I don’t enjoy it, no problem; I’ll move on to something different, maybe Hungarian.

It’s not a resolution, exactly; it’s more like my lifelong goal— to get inspired and be willing to try. That’s what brought me to Atlanta Senior Life, and that’s what I hope to share with our readers in every issue.

Not too long ago, semi-retired business executive Bob Carr had an extraordinary idea that took years in the making. And like most ideas, this one required continuous changes and extra fine-tuning to achieve success.

Carr’s company is supported by specific funds, grants and open donations, which are available to their riders.

Carr’s idea led to the creation of a company—Common Courtesy Rides. The outcome has helped seniors and other adults who may be physically challenged to travel from point A to B with ease. Transport problems arise when a person cannot drive. And feelings of isolation, depression and other health issues may increase.

“Our plan is definitely working,” Carr stated, and his wife Anne and he “…couldn’t be more pleased.”

The Carrs know it’s particularly difficult getting to a doctor’s office, grocery store or even hair appointment. “In many cases,” said Carr, “the family that wants to assist may live more than 200 miles away.”

This past year, what started as an idea has really taken hold, said Carr. “It’s all about helping those with limited mobility and resources.”

Carr said he was thinking about all the seniors in Atlanta (or anywhere, for that matter) who might be moved out of their homes (needlessly) based on urban transportation problems.

“We have to change this system,” Carr said after seeing one problem after another while driving for Uber. Carr became a driver to test his ideas.

“We initially began with volunteer drivers, but that was short-lived,” Carr said. Volunteers were not always available when needed. That’s when Carr presented his idea directly to Uber’s management in Atlanta. Later Lyft came on board with their service.

Each month, 20,000 copies of Atlanta Senior Life are distributed to selected locations where active seniors live, work, volunteer and play in the north metro areas of Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties.

At Common Courtesy, both Carr and his wife have found a way to bridge the transportation gap by using Uber and Lyft, two popular ride-sharing services. The

It works this way. Carr receives a donation from an organization, such as the Georgia Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA of Georgia). A client with Parkinson’s disease would complete a onetime application (including a $10 fee to register). That’s when the client becomes eligible to take rides paid for by APDA of Georgia.

The APDA funds are placed in a Common Courtesy ‘chapter account.’ The caller requesting a ride identifies

their organization and the time and place for an upcoming appointment. That’s it.

One of Carr’s challenges meant inventing a way to coordinate rides remotely— for those people without smartphone technology. Rides are booked by either a phone call to the Common Courtesy call center or (if available) using smartphones. The development of a smartphone application was one of many technology hurdles Carr had to overcome.

Rides are not restricted to organizations like the APDA. The group that’s funding the ride might be from a church or any other business that wants to help. Carr’s chapters, include

accounts from Atlanta Hearing Associates to Holy Innocents Episcopal Church and over 25 other groups in between.

Personal accounts are also available. For example, if a person’s grown children want to ensure their parent has transportation when needed, they, too, can create a fund.

“The feedback we receive keeps us going (as well as growing),” admitted Carr. It ranges from Sheila Gillman’s daughter who says, “My mother feels safe and so independent!” to Anita Collier who told Carr, “This program has given Steven [our disabled son] such a degree of freedom and independence— what a blessing!”

SilverSneakers Fitness was established in 1992 and uses proven methodologies based upon more than 20 years of experience. The program encourages participants to partake in strength training, aerobic and flexibility exercise through access to a variety of venues and programming. The program also enables a connection between fitness and socialization, with most of the participants bringing along friends or making new ones in the classes.

One of the many local centers that has partnered with this National initiative is the Austin Drive Community Development (ADCD), a 501 (c)(3) division of Bethesda Cathedral Church in Decatur. Around the back side of the church is a small building, separated from the church by a small path. Double doors lead into a carpeted room with a modest stage. On any given weekday, you might hear upbeat music emanating from a small sound system and the encouraging words of a teacher, keeping time with the beat. Seniors laugh and joke while they follow along, the vibe a distinctly warm and welcoming one.

On the day that I visited, instructor Cynthia Phillips was leading the charge. Her enthusiastic demeanor and encouraging words kept the group moving happily along with the music. If someone appeared to be winded or in need of a moment’s rest, she would call out and suggest having a seat or drinking some water.

For Phillips, the experience of leading these classes is a personal one. Outside of working at the ADCD, she runs a shared gym space that she opens to the community and small start-ups. Many of her classes are with young people or children, and she has seen firsthand the disparity between young people and the elderly when it comes to fitness. “I want these seniors to know how powerful they are,” Phillips said with conviction.

As the class wound down, I found the time to briefly speak with a few of the participants to get their opinion on the SilverSneakers fitness program.

Merdis Toliver, a retired mapmaker for the Yellow Pages, has been taking SilverSneaker classes for the last couple of years, and averages four to five classes a week. At 69 years of age and with two hip replacements under her belt, she credits her good health in part to her fitness regimen. “I look at it as the more mobile you are, the better,” she said, noting that the replacements are predicted to last for around 10 to 15 years, and “I plan to be around longer,” she said with a laugh.

The classes at the Austin Drive Campus are not only convenient in location for Toliver, they are also covered by her insurance, which allows her to take a variety of classes. When asked which class is her favorite,

she had a hard time choosing. “I like them all,” she told me, citing how much the teachers work with the students during the classes. “I also like the way they tell you what body part the workout is good for.”

By increasing her understanding of how exercise is affecting her body, Toliver is able to tailor her fitness routine to her needs. So does the program help her live a healthier and happier life? “Oh heck yes,” she said with a chuckle. “You should have seen me when I first started walking after surgery.” The grimace that followed told me all that I needed to know about how strong she is and how far she has come. It’s not only recovery

from injury that is aided by participation in SilverSneakers, but also improved health habits. For Juanita Foster, a 71-year-old BellSouth service evaluation department retiree, the classes have become a regular part of her fitness regimen. “I had been wanting to find an exercise program,” she said, so when she received a mailing from AETNA Health Insurance with information about the SilverSneakers program, she gave it a try. “I enjoy exercise, plus my doctor wanted me to lose a few pounds and stabilize my blood pressure.”

For more than two years now, Foster has been a regular at strength building and yoga classes at ADCD. Strength training is an important part of retaining agility and mobility, but she says that her favorite class would have to be yoga. “Yoga class is the only one I don’t watch the clock for,” she said with a laugh. To maintain a healthy and able physique, it is important to not only retain muscle strength, but also to remain flexible. Plenty of injuries can happen from being overly tight and tense, so a gentle stretching routine can do wonders for seniors who might otherwise remain mostly stationary.

“I keep moving,” said Esteen Fletcher, who at 81 has seen firsthand the effects of a sedentary lifestyle on seniors when she was a private duty nurse’s assistant and worked in a nursing home. “I like to move instead of so much

Reading Circle opens at Piedmont Park

The Piedmont Park Conservancy has just finished the installation of the park’s new Reading Circle, which was funded by the Midtown Atlanta Rotary Club.

The reading circle offers book lovers and families a quaint space containing 27 bench-like stones surrounding a Red Oak tree. The position next to the 12th Street entrance allows for easy access for local residents as well as small children who might not be able to trek the entire park.

“The Midtown Rotary Club has partnered with the conservancy for smaller projects like planting trees and shrubs. Yet, we wanted a legacy project through the conservancy. We fell in love with the idea of a place for children to engage in free play and where people could read to them,” said Sophie Mason, Past President and Raffle CoChair for the legacy project. “Really, it is a place for everyone to enjoy.”

The Reading Circle is now open for public use.

SeniorFitAtlanta: the goal is in the name

Growing up in southeast Georgia, Bradford Bailey learned to respect his elders. His mother was a social worker, and he says she taught him to look up to senior citizens as she worked with them in their small, rural community.

When Bailey moved to metro Atlanta in 2006, freshly minted exercise physiology diploma in hand, he was surprised to find few exercise classes were offered that had been designed specifically for older participants. So he started his own program. Now his company, SeniorFitAtlanta, works in 25 to 30 senior facilities spread from Forsyth

County to Palmetto to Stone Mountain, he said.

One recent afternoon, the 41-year-old Bailey worked with

13 clients in a senior living community in Brookhaven. He led the group of seniors as they worked through a series of exercises designed to focus on different muscle groups and to make them stronger.

“That’s our main concept,” Bailey said before class began. “We work on strengthening exercises. Out of all the components of fitness, that’s the one seniors benefit most from.”

Strengthening exercises help improve his clients’ muscle mass and increase bone density, he said. That, in turn, helps improve their quality of life, and helps protect them against disease and injuries in falls. If seniors are physically strong, Bailey explained, they are able to live more independent and productive lives.

He also promotes exercise as a “magical pill” against illness. “Regular exercise and physical activity can help prevent and treat all of the common deadly diseases,” he wrote recently. “For example, a 30-minute session of exercise helps to lower blood pressure, reduce blood sugar and strengthen your heart and lungs. ... No population benefits more from exercise than the senior population.”

Bailey’s classes last about 30 minutes apiece and he uses

weights, rubber balls, resistance bands and other devices in his workouts. He tells his clients that the best exercise for their cardiovascular systems is simply to take regular walks.

What

Cool Weather vegetables

The holidays are over and winter is finally here. With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, did you fall behind on your gardening? If so, you’re in luck! There’s still time to plant some fall and winter vegetables. Here are some of the vegetables that can be planted in January and February.

● Beets

● Broccoli

● Cabbage

● Carrots

● Collards

● Kale

● Mustard

● English peas

● Radishes

● Spinach

● Turnips

As you can see, you can plant a whole garden full of vegetables. January is a good time to start a winter garden. Most people have more time to devote to it and it’s nice to have something to get you out of the house and get your body moving.

All the vegetables listed can be started by seed. Just follow the planting directions on the back of the seed packets. The location needs to get about 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight. Make sure you plant in well-drained soil. Many of the winter vegetables require a

lot of nitrogen, so be sure to add fertilizer to the soil and fertilize every four to six weeks after the initial planting.

If you’re interested in starting a winter garden but don’t have a yard or access to a garden, don’t worry. Many of these vegetables can be planted in containers; they’ll be easily accessible and right outside your door. The best vegetables for containers are: beets, carrots, kale, lettuce, mustard, peas, radishes and spinach. When selecting a container, the bigger the better. Add some potting soil and fertilizer and you’ll be ready to go.

Some of these vegetables, depending on what you plant, will be ready to harvest in only about a month or two. While most people are getting their fresh produce from the grocery store, you can just step outside your door and have fresh veggies ready to prepare.

Happy gardening!

AARP Georgia Recognizes Tom Umstead

Tom Umstead of Sandy Springs has been selected by AARP, the nonprofit organization for people 50 and older, to receive the 2016 AARP Georgia Andrus Award for Community Service, the association’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service.

AARP Georgia selected Umstead for his remarkable service, which has greatly benefited his community, supported AARP’s vision and mission and inspired other volunteers. For many years now, he has found a way local businesses could partner with non-profits to truly impact the lives of the people they serve including seniors, children and families. He encouraged others to volunteer and they followed his example.

“This award acts as a symbol to the public that we can all work together for positive social change,” says Debra Tyler-Horton, AARP Georgia State Director.

2016 Forever Young Senior Ball

Mayor Kasim Reed hosted more than 4,800 Atlanta senior residents at the 2016 Forever Young Senior Citizens Ball on Nov. 20 at the Marriott Marquis in downtown Atlanta. The annual ball is designed to encourage seniors to stay active and healthy through community programs and outreach initiatives, and salutes seniors for their commitment, service and leadership to the Atlanta community.

“Our senior residents are the jewels of the city of Atlanta and they are deserving of a celebration each year which recognizes their commitment, achievements and contributions to our wonderful city,” said Mayor Reed. “It was such an honor to pay tribute last evening to the men and women who laid the foundation for our great city to thrive.”

Make coloring a New Year’s resolution

I now do it while waiting in the doctor’s office or at the car repair shop. After four decades hiding my passion in the closet, I’m doing it in broad daylight. We have come a long way, baby—coloring for adults is now legal! To paraphrase Barbara Mandrell’s 1981 hit country song, I was coloring before coloring was cool.

I was stunned when I first noticed signs at Michaels Arts & Crafts and Barnes & Noble Bookstore last year advertising coloring books for adults. “What?” I thought, “Is this for real?!”

Not that I don’t enjoy doing the Disney-theme coloring books, but working the current adult versions with intricate illustrations makes me feel, well, like an adult. The choice is not simple because there’s a plethora of coloring books to choose from, such as mandalas, flowers, animals—the selections are infinite. Some are quite involved and the details can be very small, which is why we need gel pens and good eyeglasses. This brings me to the next challenge—selecting coloring pencils. This is harder than it used to be. We now have bright, watercolor, gel, pastel, intense and soft coloring pencils from several makers. I’m sure some of you out there are wondering how I managed to make these decisions, some of the hardest in my life.

Thankfully, public libraries are joining in the trend by offering mini-workshops where adults get together to color for about an hour or so on a Saturday. The library provides all the materials. The participants offer fellowship.

I know what you’re thinking, that you have so many errands to run that you don’t have time to color. Think again.

Focusing on coloring reduces sensory overload—the distress

that partially comes from a fast pace of life. The keyword is focus. This means no TV, no phones, no computer—in other words, no technology. Neurologists argue that coloring may improve cognitive abilities, such as memory, decision-making and problem-solving skills, by enhancing the firing of neurons in the prefrontal cortex. (I can use all the help I can get in my pre-frontal cortex).

And consider this, if Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, can find time to color, so can you. I read that the “Secret Garden,” illustrated by Scottish artist Johanna Basford, is the duchess’ favorite coloring book. (Guess which book I’m going to get next.)

Coloring is about expressing ourselves through color. So let’s review what art therapists tell us about the meanings of colors. Pink is associated with femininity, while red may imply passion or anger. Blue is associated with a sense of peace and spirituality, while green may imply growth and nature. Purple is associated with royalty and wealth, and black tends to imply feelings of loss.

Creativity is a wonderful and healthy way to cope with loss, and not just the big losses in our lives, but our multiple everyday losses, like saying goodbye to a neighbor who’s moving miles away or losing one’s ability to drive. You get the drift.

Maybe you didn’t have a good day at work, or you fell down and hurt your knee, or the car didn’t start this morning. These are the times that I reach out to my coloring book to center myself. If you can identify with this, I’m eager to hear from you and explore the possibility of forming a coloring book club for adults. Let’s make coloring a New Year’s resolution!

Making a Plug for Buying Quality Device Chargers

Some may see it as a challenge to see how far they can push their luck before the omnipotent battery light on their device changes from carefree green to the dreaded red. One minute you have access to unlimited information and communication, literally at your fingertips, and the next you are cut off, excommunicated and unplugged. Many also play a game of Russian roulette of sorts with the kinds of chargers they use.

My personal favorite company is Linksys www.linksys.com/us/, which carries a wide assortment to match the voltage and power needs of your devices. You can buy from them directly or from Amazon. There are also several things that you can do to conserve the life of your battery and reduce the need to be tethered to a charger.

■ Reducing the brightness of the screen is the best way to conserve battery life.

Gene Rubel created the Digital Device Doctor to help people navigate the multitude of devices and products by providing easy instruction on usage, device and product recommendations and troubleshooting—eliminating the need for them to ask their children or grandchildren for help!

Invariably, companies will try to capitalize on a popular industry by creating and selling knock off products at a much lower cost. However, unlike in other fields such as fashion, it can actually do more harm than good to use poor quality chargers with your devices. Chargers can be purchased in every color of the rainbow from almost anywhere, making it intentionally convenient to pick one up from the grocery store or gift shop.

According to research by pcmag.com, poor quality chargers are not as efficient, and also pose a significantly higher risk for electrical shock—a personal safety concern as well as a risk for device damage. Whenever possible, use the charger that comes with the device for the best and safest performance.

Should you need additional chargers, purchase them from a reputable company either in store or online. Amazon recently created more stringent guidelines for the types of device accessories it sells.

LOOKING FOR A LOW COST, LEGAL ALTERNATIVE TO BANKRUPTCY?

Are you a Senior, Veteran or Disabled Person Living on Social Security, Disability, Pensions or Veteran’s Benefits?

Federal law protects your income from creditor garnishment. Debt Counsel for Seniors, Veterans and the Disabled (DCSD) can protect you from creditor harassment. If you can’t pay your credit card or medical bills or your student loans or payday loans, you can stop paying them without filing for bankruptcy.

We are celebrating 15 years of helping seniors with their debt without filing for bankruptcy and protecting them from letters and calls from collection agents. You too can live worry-free as thousands of our clients do.

■ Turn on “location on” only when it is absolutely necessary (for example, when using Google Maps for navigation).

■ Only load apps on your phone that you actually use.

■ Check if your apps allow for “push notifications,” which allows them to communicate and update your device constantly. It is best to turn off push notifications entirely.

■ High quality portable batteries are another alternative, which are also available from Linksys or Amazon.

Resisting convenience and investing in quality chargers will go a long way toward insuring your safety and the best performance and lifespan of your device.

stillness,” she said. Staying active not only during classes, Fletcher also works out at home, doing tai chi and running on a treadmill.

Foster has been taking classes at the ACDC location for the last seven to eight years, after being brought along initially by a friend. Since then, it has become a regular part of her life. “I like the dance part mostly,” she said, dancing a bit in her seat. “It keeps me moving.”

“You get to be our age, you better be moving,” Toliver chimed in. Everyone nodded in agreement.

Beyond the physical benefits, taking regular fitness classes can also be a much needed mental health boost. “Exercise is not just physical,” asserted Mary Lee Davis, a 72-year-old attorney and part time judge in DeKalb Traffic Court. For Davis, exercise has always been a big part of her life, and she

was an avid runner well into her 50s. These days, Davis takes classes such as water aerobics, strength building and tai chi.

“I love the meditation aspect,” she said, noting that she gains balance, mental clarity and a meditative mindset from working out regularly. “It helps keep me centered and focused.” As a very active person, Davis feels a drive to make up for sitting all day on the bench during work. To her, that means taking classes that work out her body while calming her mind.

In order to maintain healthy habits, you have to also enforce them, so regularly attending SilverSneakers courses with friends is one of Davis’ top priorities. “I don’t allow much to interfere with my classes or my grandparenting,” she said with wry conviction.

For those seeking a healthier lifestyle, socialization and a variety of courses, SilverSneakers is a wonderful option that makes exercise a feasible part of everyday life, regardless of where you live or how much money you have in the bank. To find a SilverSneakers location nearby and apply for membership, go online to www.silversneakers.com, call 866-584-7389 or email silversneakerswebcontact@healthways.com.
