Buckhead’s vast 268-acre Chastain Park is an oasis of green space in a community aﬄicted with traﬃc gridlock. For the residents living around it, the park is their greatest asset, but also creates the biggest challenge of living there. There’s a place for everyone at Chastain Park. Chastain Park Civic Association President Jim King notes that the park contains four main north-to-south roads – Powers Ferry Road, Lake Forrest Drive, Northside Drive and Roswell Road. “There’s only one road, West Wieuca, that goes through the park, so eastto-west connectivity is slow,” King said. Civic Association member Debra Fowler said the traﬃc is “really horrible.” King said there are about 1,500 parking spaces in and around Chastain. If people don’t carpool into the park, neighborhood streets catch the overflow. That’s where the Civic Association steps in. King, a man with silver hair who often gives passionate speeches in defense of Buckhead, said the association is one of several with a stake in the park’s future. The Civic Association provides security, demands action from public oﬃcials, and partners with the nearly one dozen other organizations operating on behalf of Chastain. “I’d like to think we are, in a lot of ways, thought leaders on issues,” King said. The neighborhood’s borders are Mount Paran Road to the north, Roswell Road to the east, Northside Drive to the west, and Blackland Road to the south. The neighborhood exists in two cities. About 1/3 is in Sandy Springs and 2/3 is in Atlanta, King said. It is served by two public school systems: Atlanta and Fulton County. The elementary schools are Warren T. Jackson in Atlanta and Heards Ferry in Sandy Springs. King said the traditional boundaries contain about 2,000 residents, but there are some areas outside of the northern boundary that also like to consider themselves a part of the neighborhood.

Using that measurement, the population would be closer to 3,000, King said. King doesn’t mind that people like associating themselves with Chastain. “I try to be more inclusive than exclusive,” he said. Chastain began as a 1,000-acre tract, according to the Chastain Park Conservancy, an organization that helps maintain the park. Creek Indians lived there in the early 1800s and farmed what is now the North Fulton Golf Course. In the 1930s, the park was the site of a Negro Women’s Convict Camp, according to historical accounts. The park is named in honor of County Commissioner Troy Chastain, dedicated to his memory in 1946. The park began its transformation around the same time, benefiting from New Deal projects via the Works Progress Administration. Many of the facilities still present were WPA projects, according to the Conservancy. Today those amenities are what make the park a destination point. The Chastain Amphitheater brings in top musical acts, in addition to weekend traﬃc. The horse park, swimming pool, golf course, tennis center and ballfields leave little excuse for boredom. If you like a slower pace, that’s OK, too. Older couples walk hand-in-hand along the trail, while younger residents stretch on the green before a jog. King said the amenities, location and his neighbors are the things he likes most about living there. Fowler said it’s one of the few spaces in Atlanta that hasn’t been over-developed. “It’s centrally located,” Fowler said. “The neighborhood and the people are terrific.” King said the multiple organizations aﬃliated with Chastain work independently with the same goal in mind. “Everybody does their job,” King said. “The park is taken care of.”

NPU backs exemption to let wine shop open BY CHUCK STANLEY Buckhead’s NPU-B has offered preliminary support for a change to restrictions on sales of packaged beer and wine along Peachtree Road and Peachtree Street. The proposed exemption to the distance requirements between single family neighborhoods and beer and wine retailers would apply only to shopping centers with more than 75,000-square feet of retail space and frontage on Peachtree Street or Peachtree Road. Restrictions on liquor sales would not be changed. The move would most immediately have an effect on Buckhead Square Shopping Center at Piedmont and Peachtree roads, where a wine merchant is currently blocked from taking over the space formerly occupied by the Container Store. The proposed change to the alcohol licensing ordinance is still in the conceptual phase. The proposal must be officially filed by Atlanta City Council before being brought back before Peachtree Place residents and NPU-B for another vote. Attorney Kevin Leff, who has petitioned exemptions to the ordinance for a number of retailers and supermarkets along the Peachtree Corridor, told members of the NPU-B board on April 2 that current restrictions on beer and wine often prohibit retailers from setting up shop in properties where they make the most sense. The reason, he says, is the reliance on straight-line distances from single family neighborhoods, rather than actual walking distances. “For example,” he told the board,

“You couldn’t put a beer and wine store in certain parts of Lenox Mall, because of their proximity to Peachtree Park on the other side of Ga. 400. But actually walking from one to the other would take forever.” Leﬀ also noted that, of the 10 properties involved in the proposed change, Buckhead Square is the only one without a retailer with an existing exemption. The state-mandated distances between packaged alcohol retailers, he said, mean one of these stores would have to close before another could open. “To me, this sounds like you’re bringing us up to speed with the liquor-bythe-drink requirements in that same corridor,” said Bob Stasiowski, who heads NPU-B’s Public Safety Committee. “Right now, there’s a Peachtree Road exemption for this very same thing [as relates to] liquor by the drink.” Abbie Shepherd, development and transit chair for NPU-B, cast the only vote against the proposed change. She expressed concern over the implication that the current distance requirements fail to account for the disjointed nature of Buckhead neighborhoods. “For a long time the city has worked to become more connected on foot,” she said. “We’re going to go back to reconnecting those neighborhoods.” Leﬀ contends the change is necessary because beer and wine sales are no longer the exclusive domain of large supermarkets and liquor stores. “We’ve seen more and more concepts come along that wouldn’t traditionally sell beer and wine, and the idea is to attract these varying uses into these large retail centers where they make the most sense.”

borhood’s nomination for the National Register would be submitted to the National Register Review Board. Inclusion on the National Register would put more restrictions on the Methodist church’s movements, Civic Association President Kim Kahwach said. The neighborhood is currently trying to resolve differences with the church over its plans to construct a 50,000-square-foot, three-story youth center. “If these homes are part of a historic designation, you need to have a really good case for demolishing them,” Kahwach said. “I’m just not convinced that they need it that badly.” Peachtree Road UMC Rev. Bill Britt said his church is continuing to work through its differences with the residents. The major concern among residents is the church expanding its footprint into the neighborhood. Peachtree Road UMC owns four houses in Buckhead Forest, Britt said. Britt said the church intends to demolish two homes on Mathieson Drive Northeast and would maintain two homes on West Shadowlawn Avenue as residences for church staff. “We have no interest in going further into the neighborhood,” Britt said. “That is not even a possibility for us right now.” Britt’s overtures to the neighborhood haven’t swayed many from the belief that city approval of the project will allow the church to continue purchasing and bulldozing homes. Katy Bryant lives in Buckhead Forest and her home on West Shadowlawn backs up to the site of the proposed youth center. She’s a veteran of zoning wars with Peachtree Road United Methodist and Peachtree Presbyterian. Bryant said she has been called the neighbor-

hood’s “chief pugilist.” She knows zoning and has achieved workable compromises with the churches in the past. Bryant showed oﬀ the end of Alberta Terrace, which backs up to a parking deck owned by Peachtree Presbyterian. It’s out of the way and, more importantly, out of sight of the neighborhood. Bryant said the neighborhood isn’t opposed to development but wants to find the best compromise “to support reasonable, responsible development.” “Churches are developers,” Bryant said. “Churches, they have a use that we have a little more of a warm feeling about. It’s all about dollars, keeping your congregation going.” Church expansions pose a range of problems for neighborhoods beyond appearance and traﬃc, Bryant said. When a church builds a parking lot, it creates an impervious surface that pushes more rainwater through the neighborhood. Buckhead Forest has 13 creeks, and flooding is an ongoing concern. “It’s like this little ecosystem,” said Amy Halford, vice president of the Buckhead Forest Civic Association. Peachtree Road UMC is in the process of obtaining a Special Use Permit for the youth center. Britt said the church still in the midst of going through the city’s zoning process. Bryant said the church is trying to use the special use permit process to expand its zoning, Special Public Interest-9, beyond its current footprint “and circumvent the requirements of SPI-9.” Neighbors continue to push back against the church’s plans. Recently residents began planting signs around the neighborhood that warn against Peachtree Road UMC’s “encroachment in our neighborhood.” Britt declined to comment about the signs. BH

Construction of more than 50 new hangars at the DeKalb-Peachtree Airport is under way, the airport director says. “Broke ground on the hangar project last week,” airport Director Mike Van Wie told members of the Buckhead Business Association on March 28. Van Wie said the hangar project will cost more than the original $5 million budget because of federal environmental regulations. Total construction costs will be around $8.3 million, he said. The airport director said there will be an oﬃcial groundbreaking ceremony in April. During his remarks, Van Wie talked about the economic benefits of general aviation. PDK provides general aviation services, meaning it does not handle commercial or freight traﬃc. The airport, located on Chamblee Tucker Road, is the second busiest airport in Georgia, after Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. “We’re a general aviation reliever airport,” Van Wie said. “That reliever designation is important to us. We relieve Hartsfield of the business jets, the Cessna 172s, the prop planes. That reliever status quali-

fies us for a separate pool of federal money that’s available for capital improvement.” He said the airport brings in $39.9 million in tax revenue to DeKalb County and traffic at the airport creates 1,834 jobs. Van Wie said the airport has felt little impact from the federal government’s sequestration, a series of automatic federal budget cuts that began in March. He said PDK air traffic controllers are federal employees while other Georgia airports use contractors for those jobs. While PDK receives federal money for improvement projects and air traffic controllers, Van Wie said the current president isn’t a friend of general aviation. Van Wie outlined the “No Plane, No Gain” advocacy program, a joint effort of the National Business Aviation Association and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association. The group has taken issue with President Obama’s criticism of corporate jets as unnecessary luxuries. “The current administration has been beating up general aviation at every opportunity,” Van Wie said. “The ‘No Plane, No Gain’ program started in defense of our industry.”

New laws will reduce the size of Fulton County government In the March 22-April 4 issue of the Buckhead Reporter, Fulton County Commission Chairman John Eaves wrote that bills pending in the state Legislature would “devastate” Fulton County. In this issue, state Rep. Ed Lindsey reviews the status of the legislation and discusses why he thinks it is needed. For the past decade, Fulton County has been transforming into a county whose population lives within the limits of one city or another. Today, 90 percent of Fulton County is municipalized. As a result, concerned state and county leaders have twice before offered ideas which would reform the operations and scope of Fulton County government. Eight years ago, a Blue Ribbon Commission in Fulton County suggested sweeping reforms. Six years ago, a bi-partisan HouseSenate Study Committee on Fulton County -- which I chaired -- once again recommended a wide range of changes. On both occasions, the Fulton County Commission by and large blocked the suggested reforms. However, with a new House delegation elected in 2012, we have finally been able to move forward. Thirteen pieces of legislation concerning Fulton County government reforms await Governor Deal’s signature, which are listed and summarized below: 1) HB 171 - Reapportionment of Fulton County Commission Districts The Fulton County Commission redistricting maps include six districts and one at-large seat for the chairman or chairwoman. 2) HB 347 - Fulton County Board of Registrations and Elections revise appointment The board will remain five members; two will be nominated by the prevailing political party and two by the losing political party. One member will be nominated by the Fulton County House and Senate Legislative Delegation. 3) HB 435 - State Court of Fulton County – chief judge duties Spells out duties for chief judge and adjusts salary to reflect increased responsibilities. New duties will include scheduling regular judges’ meetings, managing available court space, making determinations of divisions, selection and oversight of jury clerk, and developing a personnel system. 4) HB 437 - Superior Court of Fulton County – chief judge duties Outlines duties for chief judge, including scheduling regular judges’ meetings, managing available court space, making determinations of divisions, selection and oversight of jury clerk, and developing a personnel system. 5) HB 441 - Superior Court of Fulton County – budget oversight Fulton County Superior Court will operate more efficiently with ability to control budget. 6) HB 442 - State Court of Fulton County – budget oversight Fulton County State Courts will operate more efficiently with ability to control budget. 7) HB 443 - Magistrate Court of Fulton County – appointment of chief judge The chief magistrate will be a nonpartisan, elected position. Fulton County is the only Georgia county where the magistrate court is operated and administered under the state court, and the

chief magistrate is appointed by the state court judges. 8) HB 444 - Superior Court of Fulton County – judge salary supplements Despite being the largest court system in the state, the Superior Court of Fulton County (Atlanta Judicial Circuit) is ranked 11 of 49 circuits in judicial salary supplements. This legislation provides a 4 percent increase. If the other circuits remain rEp. ED the same, this increase will raise the liNDSEY Atlanta circuit to fifth, still behind GEORGIA HOUSE both Gwinnett and Cobb counties. 9) HB 526 – North Fulton reOF REPRESENTATIVES gional radio system Provides for development of regional communication system for public safety and public service for Sandy Springs, Roswell, Milton and Alpharetta. Requested by numerous cities to reduce costs and privatize. 10) HB 594 – Fulton County personnel Future employees will have unclassified status, except for public safety employees. 11) HB 598 – Fulton County Superior, State and Magistrate Courts Employees will be unclassified. 12) HB 604 – Fulton County millage rate Suspends any attempt to increase the ad valorem millage rate in 2013 and 2014. Requires five of seven commissioners to vote to increase millage rate in 2015, when reapportionment takes effect. 13) HB 627 – Fulton County Community Improvement Districts Revise provisions to allow Fulton County Community Improvement Districts located outside Atlanta to renew prior to termination date. It was requested by all CIDs aﬀected. These reforms look to provide the taxpayers of Fulton County with streamlined, concise government that aims to do its job properly in the name of fiscal responsibility. Furthermore, these are only the first round of reforms for Fulton County. I believe that these are positive steps in the right direction for Fulton County in a two-year legislative process that will hopefully culminate in lowering the footprint of the Fulton County government. As for next session concerning carry-over legislation, the delegation tabled both the Fulton County Homestead Exemption and the revisions to the appointment of the Fulton County Tax Commissioner. Both bills will be vetted further before returning to the desks of the General Assembly. I expect my friends across Fulton to continue to diligently fight for the interests of their communities and trust they expect me to do the same. My hope is that we will keep our focus on ways in which our interests overlap, refrain from using inflammatory rhetoric, and work together for the mutual good of all of Fulton County. Rep. It may be your dad inside this Easter Bunny costume Todd Koetje raced from the backyard to breathlessly announce a special guest’s arrival. “Hey, guys,” he yelled to 50 ArounD or so people – about half toWn adults, half kids – gathJOe eaRLe ered for their neighborhood Easter party at Ray and Nicole Johnson’s house. “I just saw the Easter Bunny. The Easter Bunny is here.” Moments later, the big rabbit himself hopped into view. Woodsong Court’s own Easter Bunny had returned. He paid his annual visit to the Dunwoody cul-de-sac on the Saturday before the holiday as the neighborhood kids were hunting Easter eggs, and moms and dads and a few grandparents gathered for brunch. This bunny stood at least six feet tall, had floppy ears, was covered head-totoe in fluffy white fur, wore a brightly colored vest and a rubbery nose, and looked surprisingly like Koetje’s neighbor Jess Brown in a bunny suit. Woodsong Court’s Easter Bunny has appeared at the neighborhood’s holiday party every year since 2008. A Woodsong dad has worn the big bunny suit each year. There’s a tradition to determine which dad will appear as the bunny: whoever has the last-place team in the neighborhood fantasy football league wins the honor, or perhaps dishonor. Except this year, when the lastplace finisher had a conflict, so Brown stepped in to fill the bunny gap.

As he hopped into the yard, everyone gathered around to welcome him. Everyone, that is, except Brown’s own kids. They bolted. “My kids, it’s like their minds are blown,” Brown, a 32-year-old who usually handles financial matters for a contracting and consulting company, said later. “The only two scared kids were mine.” It turns out that Easter Bunnies get used to a little rejection. Sherry Waugh, a member from Sandy Springs, said that through another program they bring approximately 2024 women a year to their thrift shop from Mary Hall Freedom House and outfit them “with appropriate clothes for job interviews.” “This program is near and dear to my heart,” she said.

Gardner, who works in the shop on Saturdays, said her favorite part of the job is the people she works with and the customers she meets. Frequent shoppers include Shirley Eidson and Elizabeth Valera. “Many of my favorite things come from this thrift shop,” Eidson said. “It’s fun to find things here,” said Valera, a full-time employee and graduate student. “My mom and her friends come here too.”

Mark the calendar: Sandy Springs’ annual arts celebration begins soon. ArtSSpring 2013 starts April 18 and lasts through May 17. The month-long celebration features a variety of events highlighting local artists, great literature and tempting food. Many of the events are free to attend. The event’s organizers will place green bows throughout the city as a reminder for residents. Peggy Allen, a spokeswoman for ArtSSpring, said this year’s list of events is condensed, compared with prior years. While there were near-daily events in 2012, organizers decided to schedule most of the activities around the weekend for the 2013 festival. Allen said there will also be new events this year. “Foodie Fridays is our new endeavor, and we’re excited about that because it includes music and the food trucks,” Allen said. Foodie Fridays will be held at Kudzu & Company. Allen said 13 local restaurants will also display artwork during ArtSSpring. Allen said organizers are taking advantage of the city’s resources. On May 16 there will be a “Painting to Music” event at Big Trees Forest Preserve from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. “We’re using a lot of the natural parks and the organizations in the community,” Allen said. Sandy Springs Reads this year chose “To Kill a Mockingbird” as the featured book. The celebration will hold several events honoring the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Harper Lee. The first weekend event will be Sandy Springs Artsapalooza, held April 20 and 21 at 6100 Lake Forrest Dr., NE, 30328. The event hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m on April 20, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 21. “This two-day outdoor art and handcraft festival is hosted by the Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces,” the ArtSSpring announcement says. “Approximately 150 artists and artisans will set up under tents. The event will include local food and beverages, an interactive children’s area and ARTSS booth.” The celebration will conclude with a “Foodie Fridays” event on May 17 held

at Kudzu & Company, 6450 Roswell Rd., 30328, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The announcement describes the final event as “a street-side party for food and music lovers, with gourmet food trucks from the Atlanta Street Food Coalition, music by Steve’s Live Music, and a showing of original art by local artists presented by Kudzu & Company.” Allen said the events bring attention to local artists and businesses. “It’s all a gift from us to them from the city,” Allen said. “It creates enthusiasm and activity for the city.” For a full list of events, visit: www. artsandysprings.org.

tions. The wives call themselves the “Women of Woodsong,” proudly known as “the WOWs.” They gather for “girls’ night out,” and organize the holiday parties. Their husbands responded with the Men of Woodsong, or “the MOWs,” who gather around a backyard fire pit to talk and drink beer. And, of course, to provide someone to fill the bunny suit. This year’s bunny got a workout. Brown’s bunny hopped with the kids and posed for photos with just about everybody. “It’s a bit warm in this thing,” he admitted after a while. “My lungs are burning.” Good to know. Brown will have his chance to warn others who don the community bunny suit in the future that they should do a little stretching before hippityhopping onto the Easter stage. Each dad who wears the suit writes a letter of advice to future bunnies. The letters are handed down from dad to dad during a ceremony the night before the new bunny makes his debut. How did Brown hold up? “We’re good,” he said, holding his arms aloft like a winning ballplayer during March Madness. “I’m feeling the bunny. It’s that Easter pride.” What Easter pride? He stopped a moment and thought about it. “Helping to continue the tradition,” he said.

Student Proﬁle:  Anna Kampfe  Sophomore, Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School Anna Kampfe has been painting for as long as she can remember. “I have always been attracted to art and making marks on a page,” she said. “I like that art is a way of putting a part of myself out in the open. When I draw something, it’s not just a drawing, it’s me showing how I see things.” One of her works was recently selected to be a part of a teen artist exhibit at the High Museum of Art. Teens were required to create a portrait inspired by Frida Kahlo, and were then judged based on technique, skill and their ability to react to the artist’s work. The exhibition celebrates the High Museum’s “Frida and Diego: Passion, Politics, and Painting” exhibition, which continues through May 12. Anna hopes that one day she can have her own exhibit at the High Museum. Not only has this process helped Anna become more professional and improve her time management skills, but she also realizes how important it is to share her work with others. “I also think it is important to learn that everybody has a different viewpoint,” she said. “Every portrait was different, which was a wonderful thing to see.”

Katie Arnold is Anna’s art teacher at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School this year. She describes Anna as “an artist in the making.” “It’s fun to watch her stretch herself,” Arnold said. “She is always trying something new, and always thinking outside of the box.” Theater is another form of art that Anna enjoys. She has been in many plays and is a part of a girls’ a cappella singing group. “When people say that the theater is like a family, it is absolutely, 100 percent true,” she said. “It is probably the one place I can go where everyone is just themselves, and we all love each other for our differences.” As a result of the numerous roles she has played, Anna has become much more confident in front of a crowd and has gained public speaking skills. In her free time, Anna enjoys writing. Now she’s working on combining her interest in writing with her visual art work. She has been working on a graphic novel since last summer.

What’s Next: Anna is looking into art schools such as the Savannah College of Art and Design, and the Maryland Institute College of Art. She is considering tying her two passions, art and theater, together and pursuing a career in animation. Student Proﬁle:  Alex Cameron  Junior, Dunwoody High School Whether she’s competing in crosscountry races, playing an instrument or swimming, Alex Cameron finds running toward her goals comes naturally. Alex always stays active. Last fall, the Dunwoody High girls’ cross-country team qualified for the state tournament along with 31 other teams. DeKalb County hasn’t had a girls’ cross-country team win the state title in 30 years. That’s right. The last one was in 1982. The girls’ team won the state title. Alex brought home the individual 5-AAAAA state championship with a time of 19:49:96. She bested about 200 runners. One mile into the race, she had a clear lead. Dunwoody girls’ cross-country coach Brian Boucher wasn’t surprised by Alex’s victory. He saw the dedication to success she displayed throughout the season. “She took on a greater leadership role this year,” Boucher said. “Her desire to have the whole team be successful truly made a diﬀerence.” It takes time and hard work to excel at any sport. She’s been swimming competitively, mostly on summer league teams, since age 6. Alex discovered her passion for running when she joined a club in the sixth grade at Peachtree Middle School. “I really liked it, and it just went from there.” Whether playing a sport or studying, it’s important to have a support system. And what better encouragement is there for a runner than having a mom who ran track in high school and a dad

Alex proves that dedication goes a long way in achieving goals. “Alex uses her talent and builds on it through hard work,” Boucher said. Along with her passion for running, Alex participates in the band at Dunwoody High. She has been playing trumpet since the sixth grade. Alex’s running hasn’t stopped at cross country. This spring, she’s on the track team. She runs 1600-meter and 3200-meter events. She does a lot, but she’s careful not to overdo it. “Quality is always better than quantity,” Alex said. “It’s always better to work a little each day than a whole lot crammed in just twice a week.”

What’s Next: Alex will be a senior next year and plans on joining the Dunwoody High School swim team as well as continuing to compete in cross country and track.  2000 block of Peachtree Road, NE – An aggravated assault was reported on March 18. While in a vehicle, a man pointed a pistol at a woman in another vehicle, telling her not to move. She then took off in her vehicle, and the man, her ex-boyfriend, gave chase down the road. Every time he got close he would point the pistol at her. A witness, the woman’s mother, said she saw a blue Honda pull up alongside the vehicle her daughter was in. She recognized the suspect as the ex-boyfriend, who pointed the pistol. The woman’s stepfather contacted the suspect by phone, trying to defuse the situation. A warrant was taken out for the suspect’s arrest.  3300 block of Roswell Road, NE – An aggravated assault was reported on March 20. A woman said about 8 p.m., she was jogging on Roswell Road when she was approached by a man. She said she stopped jogging because she thought he was going to ask for directions. She said the man took out a silver handgun from underneath his sweatshirt and pointed it at her. She was unsure what the man said because she had her earphones in her ears. She ran away and saw the man jump into the passenger seat of a tan, four-door vehicle.  1500 block of Chattahoochee Avenue, NW – An aggravated assault was report-

ed on March 22. The victim’s brother got into a argument that escalated when he grabbed a knife and attempted to stab her. Their mother separated them. He then proceeded to throw items and destroy property in the residence. The 15-year-old

male was charged with aggravated assault and damage to property, and transported to the Metro Youth Detention Center.

RAPE  900 block of Crane Road, NE – A rape was reported on March 18. A woman said while stopped at a red light at the intersection of Wieuca and Roxboro roads, four men approached her vehicle. One man pulled up his shirt to show a weapon. She unlocked the doors and the men entered. When she drove and stopped in DeKalb County, one man put a gun to her head and another man put a knit cap over her head. He then pulled her into the back seat of the car and one man drove her car. She was raped. Upon completion of the assault, the men exited the vehicle and told her she could leave. A used condom and a rolled up paper towel were recovered.

ROBBERY  2000 block of Bolton Road, NW – A pedestrian robbery was reported on March 12. Two men attempted to rob the victim, who had nothing on him. One of the men hit the victim with a handgun on the side of his head. The man was treated by Grady.  2400 block of Piedmont Road, NE –A commercial robbery was reported on the morning of March 13. An unknown man walked into the bank, approached teller station NO. 2, and asked the teller if she could help him with directions. He then passed the teller a note that read, “This is a robbery. I want $5,000. I’m armed. Don’t move. Give me the note back when you are done.” The teller gave the note back, gave the suspect $3,273 from her top drawer, and pressed the silent alarm when the suspect left. The suspect walked north on Piedmont Road. No dye packs or tracking

A woman dressed in black followed the victim to her apartment complex, where she pointed a gun at the victim and forced her to go into her apartment. The suspect took $400 in cash, a gold necklace and bracelet, and a bag of clothing. The suspect left in a brown SUV.  1900 block of Piedmont Circle, NE – A pedestrian robbery was reported on March 14. A man said he was leaving a nightclub and saw a group of men. One of the men punched him in the mouth. He said after he was punched, one of the men placed a handgun to his chest while the other emptied his pockets. He saw another man standing in front of a black Ford Mustang. This suspect also was holding a handgun that looked like a Bushmaster Carbon 15 with an extended clip. The victim said there were about eight total suspects. Security said the suspects frequent the club and hang out in the Riverdale area.  1000 block of Huff Road, NW – A robbery at a residence

was reported on March 16. Three unidentified men dressed in black entered a woman’s home while she was there, one knocking her out and taking $50 cash, her North Carolina driver’s license and her Social Security card.

 3200 block of Peachtree Road, NE – A commercial robbery at a bank was reported on March 16. A man handed to a teller a note saying he was armed with a weapon. He took $4,276. He then left.

 800 block of Lenox Oaks Circle, NE – A pedestrian robbery was reported on March 22. Four men robbed a woman at gunpoint. They took the victim in her vehicle and drove her around until they found an ATM, where they withdrew $600 in cash. A Blackberry, Social Security card, ATM card and two watches were also taken.

BURGLARY  2100 block of Whittier Place, NW – A residential burglary was reported on March 12. The front door of the home was kicked in. Three TVs, two cameras, a Kindle Fire, X-Box, Nintendo DS, iPod and laptop were stolen. Mattresses were also moved and drawers rummaged through.  3000 block of E. Shadowlawn Avenue, NE – A commercial burglary was reported on March 15. An unknown suspect forced open the rear door of the business and stole four metal tables.

 3300 block of Peachtree Road, NE – A commercial robbery at a bank was reported on March 18. A man walked into the bank, retrieved a deposit slip from the island kiosk and wrote “Gun, loose bills” on it, and handed it to a teller. The suspect verbally told the teller “I have a gun, give me all your money.” The suspect left on foot with $249, which contained a stack of $20 bills strapped with a dye pack. The suspect was later apprehended.

 1500 block of Walthall Court, NW – A residential burglary was reported on March 19. An unknown suspect broke the front window of the residence. A rock was found in the room. Several guns, a safe and $14,000 in cash were stolen from the residence. No fingerprints were obtained. A neighbor saw the suspect’s vehicle in the driveway.

A woman was asleep in the lobby when her grey, snakeskin purse was taken, which contained her passport, driver’s license and $50 in cash. A suspect was caught on tape.  700 block of Sidney Marcus Boulevard, NE – A larceny was reported on March 17. A man got a ride to QT with a woman who he thought offered a taxi service. He gave her his debit card and went to the restroom. When he came out, she was gone.  3300 block of Peachtree Road, NE – A larceny from a specialty store was reported on March 23. The suspect selected a pair of sunglasses and concealed them in a

bag. The suspect then placed the bag under a chair and left the store. The suspect returned with a pair of scissors and cut the security tag off the sunglasses. The suspect then attempted to pass the last point of sale without paying for the item.

When he returned to where he had dropped his keys, they were gone and his vehicle was also gone.  1800 block of Cheshire Bridge Road, NE – An auto theft from a nightclub was reported on March 17. A man said he parked his vehicle, a bluish/purple Porsche, in the parking lot across from Onyx. During some point he lost his keys in the club. The vehicle was not on lease and was fully paid for. Hobbs said the APD has worked to assure residents that police oﬃcers are there to protect them, not check their immigration status. “We’re reaching out to that community and saying, ‘Hey, if there’s a crime, if there’s an issue, if there’s a problem, we need to know about it because we’ll be here to help you,’” Hobbs said. Under Georgia law, police have the option to investigate someone’s immigration status. Hobbs said oﬃcers won’t check someone’s immigration status unless they have a reason to suspect that a person is living in the U.S. illegally. According to 2010 U.S. Census Data, 16 percent of the population within the 30324 ZIP code, which includes the Lindbergh/Morosgo area, identifies as Hispanic. Zone 2 is divided into 13 distinct police beats. The police beat encompassing Lindbergh/Morosgo, Beat 211, includes the neighborhoods of Peachtree Park and Peachtree Hills. In 2012, Beat 211 residents reported 47 violent crimes to Atlanta Police, the most of any of the beats in Zone 2. Among the violent crimes reported, there were reports of one rape, 30 robberies and 16 aggravated assaults.
