Neighbors of the Hub hotel say it’s a menace, and the city of Sandy Springs says it violates zoning ordinances. But an attorney for the extended-stay hotel says it’s operating within the law. The Hub’s lawyer, William Galloway, says he will appeal to superior court the city’s decision that the property is violating zoning ordinances by operating as a dorm. But Galloway said the hotel’s owners want to work with neighbors and the city to come to a resolution without involving a judge. The Sandy Springs Board of Appeals on April 10 upheld a city staff declaration that the Hub, located at 6096 Barfield Road, is violating zoning ordinances by functioning as dorm housing for Art Institute of Atlanta students. Progress on several high-profile Sandy Springs properties is at different stages as developers work to recover from the recent recession. Representatives of some long-stalled projects say they see signs of movement in the market. But not every project is moving ahead quickly. “The Atlanta market is still not at a point of recovery where any developer is comfortable,” said John Heagy, senior vice president for Hines Interests development company in the Southeast, as his company is looking to secure tenants for projects at Northpark. COMMUNITY Landscape architect chosen for City Center

A landscape architect who helped designed Suwanee’s town center, Roswell’s future city green and various streetscapes in areas including Decatur and the Cobb Galleria, has been chosen as the landscape architect for Sandy Springs’ City Center. City Council gave staff the go-ahead on April 15 to negotiate a contract for the first phase of the project with jB+a, an urban design studio based in Atlanta. Assistant City Manager Bryant Poole told the council that firm was chosen from a pool of 14 applicants.
Council approves changes to alcohol ordinance The City Council on April 15 approved the rewording of an ordinance that prohibited applicants with a single misdemeanor alcohol offense from obtaining alcohol licenses and pouring permits. In 2012, the eligibility requirements for obtaining the permits were amended so that individuals with one DUI could still apply. However, the Sandy Springs Police Department says other misdemeanor alcohol offenses still disqualify applicants. The department said a single misdemeanor controlled substance conviction would prevent an applicant from qualifying for a pouring permit, but not an alcohol license. Under the change, applicants with more than one misdemeanor alcohol or controlled substance offense will not be able to obtain licenses and pouring permits, while a single offense will not disqualify the applicants.
Parking space requirements for new developments could change Sandy Springs’ Community Development Department got permission from the City Council on April 15 to study changes to the city’s parking ordinance. The proposed amendment could include reducing the minimum number of parking spaces for properties, allowing the market to set the standard based on need. Encouraging developers to share parking utilities would also be part of the changes. Community Development Director Angela Parker said the changes are needed because the city’s minimum parking requirements are too specific, and that variances are often requested. She said that current industry trends are reducing required parking spaces and moving away from large parking fields.
Group to host fundraiser for wounded veterans The Phoenix Patriot Foundation will bring its mission to aid wounded veterans to Sandy Springs. On April 26 the group will host its inaugural Fundraiser for Combat Wounded Veterans at the Dunwoody Country Club, 1600 Dunwoody Club Drive, Sandy Springs. The public is invited to the event that will feature a dinner and drinks, a silent and “not-so-silent” auction, and the chance to meet Jared Ogden, charity founder and former Navy SEAL. COMMUNITY City issues stop-work notice to Pulte The city of Sandy Springs has ordered Pulte homes to stop work on a project on Lorell Terrace. The home builder purchased the property with the intention of tearing the house down and building an open-pit retention pond on the site in connection to a townhome development it is building on Glenridge Drive, City Councilman Tibby DeJulio said at the council’s April 1 meeting. While Pulte had zoning to build a retention pond on the Glenridge Drive site, city officials said the company had not secured appropriate zoning for the Lorrell Terrace site. Pulte did not return a call seeking comment.
New park planned near MARTA station The Perimeter Community Improvement Districts plan to hold a public meeting April 22 to plan a new 5-acre park near the Dunwoody MARTA station. The meeting is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Dunwoody City Council chambers in Dunwoody City Hall, 41 Perimeter Center East. A second public meeting is planned for May. People attending the meeting may offer suggestions on what amenities should be included in the park, said Jennifer Harper, program manager for the PCIDs. “The goal of the public meeting is to review site opportunities, early site concepts and park options, and to begin to create the Master Plan for these five acres,” the PCIDs said in a press release. The PCIDs plan to develop the park on private property near the intersection of Hammond Drive and Perimeter Center Parkway. For more information, call 770-390-1790 or email jharper@perimetercid.org.
‘Volunteer for a Better Sandy Springs’ returns April 26 Leadership Sandy Springs has scheduled its 12th annual Volunteer for a Better Sandy Springs Day for April 26. On what the group calls the largest citywide community service day, hundreds of volunteers are slated to provide landscaping, carpentry and cleanup work at schools, parks and nonprofits. The group says past volunteer days have funded community improvements valued at more than $375,000. plans to break ground at the empty lot at the corner of Roswell Road and Hammond Drive this June. “One City Walk” will include what the developers describe as a “203-unit luxury midrise, mixed-use” community that will offer apartments and include 8,000 square feet of retail space. The developers say the project will be a focal point of the Sandy Springs’ City Center. • Hines’ Northpark 100 and 700 projects in the Northpark Town Center complex at Peachtree Dunwoody and Abernathy roads are waiting to secure tenants before construction gets rolling, Heagy said. The company is looking for a lead tenant for the 700 building and has obtained zoning for the 26-story office tower. It received pushback from residents when developers requested the height limit be raised from 18 floors. Heagy said the building will not raise density as most of the extra floors will be in parking decks beneath the tower. Heagy said that plans for Northpark 100 will still require some rezoning from the city. The 14-acre site is zoned for office space, a hotel and retail, and the developers want to add residential space. • Palisades Office Park’s owner netted Sandy Springs City Council approval on April 15 to rezone to a mixed-use district that will add hotel, apartment and retail space. Shorenstein Realty asked for the rezoning, nixing an earlier rezoning request by a former owner that included more office space and condominiums. A representative said that current economic conditions would not support more office space. Palisades’ current office space will remain. Palisades is located at Peachtree Dunwoody and I-285. • Developers Ackerman, H.J. Russell and Cousins have teamed up in the hopes of building a 30-story office tower near Ga. 400 and Abernathy Road in
Sandy Springs, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. The Chronicle speculates that the developers might like to lure the headquarters of a big company like Intercontinental Hotels Group, which has been eyeing sites in the Perimeter area. The project would be near the corner of Ga. 400 and Abernathy on the site with the Serrano condominiums. It would include hotel rooms and retail. • The Grand Bohemian hotel has remained in limbo since 2009 while its developers wait on financing. Sandy Springs City Councilman Gabe Sterling says he’s looking forward to the 275room, four-star luxury boutique hotel to be built in his district. Its developers, Kessler Grand Bohemian Atlanta LLC, received a land disturbance permit for the location on the east side of Peachtree Dunwoody Road, north of Mount Vernon Highway and south of Abernathy. However, they’ve been unable to lock in financing for the $100 million project, and have had to ask for an extension from the city at least seven times, most recently on March 11. But Sterling is optimistic the project will secure financing. “It’s a boutique hotel, which is very lacking in that area. It will be an added benefit and a unique concept,” he said. He added that banks want to lend the developers money when economic conditions turn, and that Kessler continues to work with lenders. • A little less clear is the future of the Tom Jumper Chevrolet property at 7200 Roswell Road, which closed in 2008 when the owner filed for bankruptcy. “I know there’s been interest, but I don’t think there is any true movement on the property,” said city spokeswoman Sharon Kraun. “We don’t have any project/zoning/permit request in house related to the site.” SS

Voters to nominate candidates, school board member May 20 Sandy Springs voters head to the polls May 20 to nominate candidates in Republican and Democratic primaries who will run in the fall general election. Voters will also choose a school board member. In recent redistricting, a number of Sandy Springs voters were moved into new districts. Sandy Springs has been divided among three Fulton County Commission districts, and lines for Georgia House districts were redrawn. MARTA ridership is rising in the Perimeter area, the transit system’s general manager said. From July 2013 to February 2014, average weekday rail entries increased over the same months the previous year, MARTA General Manager Keith Parker told the Sandy Springs/Perimeter and Dunwoody chambers of commerce during a luncheon on April 8. The bump in ridership was 1.2 percent at Medical Center station, 2.3 percent at North Springs, 3.9 percent at Sandy Springs and 7.3 percent at Dunwoody, Parker said. Company plants ‘solar energy tree’ BY COLLIN KELLEY Hannah Solar, a Buckhead-based company that designs and integrates solar technology, has installed the first “solar energy tree” structure in the state of Georgia. The structure, designed and manufactured by Spotlight Solar, was “planted” at the company’s Collier Road headquarters on the first day of spring. The bright orange, artistic structure stands 22 feet tall and incorporates 12 distinctive Lumos solar panels. The tree will provide enough energy through Hannah Solar’s electric vehicle charging stations to power a Nissan Leaf over 6,000 miles each year. The newly-renovated Atlanta headquarters of Hannah Solar, which was founded in 2008, incorporates 254 rooftop solar modules, making more energy than the building and its 23 employees consume. The solar tree provides more energy to help power Hannah Solar’s electric vehicle charging stations. The solar tree will produce over 120,000 kilowatt
hours of clean energy over its lifetime, and eliminate pollution equivalent to burning 9,000 gallons of gasoline, while saving over $15,000 in electric energy costs or $31,500 in gas costs. “We hope these structures will foster the adoption of renewable energy and environmental stewardship, while educating consumers and businesses alike about the importance of solar energy to their business, and the rapid development of a multi-billion dollar industry in our state,” said Peter Marte, CEO of Hannah Solar. The state of Georgia is the fastest growing solar market in the United States, ranking 7th nationally in solar electric capacity, Hannah Solar said. In 2013, $189 million was invested in Georgia to install solar for home, business and utility use, the company said. Sprouts Farmers Market will open the first of four stores in metro Atlanta on July 16 in Dunwoody, on the site of the former ACE Home Place at 2480 Mt. Vernon Road. The Arizona-based supermarket, which offers fresh foods, produce, healthy foods and vitamins, has been expanding rapidly in the west. The Georgia stores will be its first entry into the Southeast market. The Atlanta Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce has seen a 150 percent growth since February of 2013, according to a report from President Suzanne Baugh. The nonprofit, which promotes economic growth and advancement for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender businesspeople in metro Atlanta, has also launched a new website (www.atlantagaychamber.org), and is working to increase its programing, including the launch of AGLCC University for personal and professional development. Kanga (www.getkanga.com), an on-demand crowdsourced delivery platform, has launched in Atlanta. The app-based service connects individuals, drivers and retailers for local shipping needs. Users place an order with a retailer and then a network of approved drivers bid to make the delivery. Kanga will be available on all iOS and Android devices. Routing status and shipment tracking will also be available via web interface. Following the launch, the company plans to expand throughout the Southeast during 2014, based on consumer demand. The startup, jointly led by entrepreneurs Scott Miller of Payleap and Everett Steele of Baby Robot Industries, received $1 million in funding.

The Metro Atlanta Chamber (MAC) announced that Brian McGowan has joined the organization’s leadership team as executive vice president and chief operating officer. Those materials are then recycled off-site. “We designed our system from Day One to make sure that we’re handling all the material in the most environmentally safe and sound way possible,” Kogon said. Pull-A-Part has collected a number of awards on the state and national level, but perhaps Kogon and Levetan are most proud of an honor by the Environmental Protection Agency for their work recovering mercury switches. The small units were used up until 2003 under trunks and hoods to switch lights on, and contain a gram of mercury, which, Levetan said, can contaminate up to 132,000 gallons of drinking water. The EPA honored Pull-A-Part for its work with an event at one of its Atlanta locations that was attended by Senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson. After the cars have been prepped, they are organized in the lot by manufacturer. Customers use a database to locate the model of their choice and then can access the lot to look for the parts they need. “It’s all do-it-yourself, so you see cus-
tomers walking in with their own tools,” Levetan said. Albany, Ga., resident James King drove to the Lithonia location to look for parts for a 1989 Chevrolet. “The price that you get the parts here for is such a savings that it’s worth me driving 200 miles to get them,” King said. “You can get for $100 here what would cost way over $1,000 if you got it new from a Chevrolet dealer, if they even had it. “So it’s a dual thing. It’s availability of parts plus the savings and price.” Kogon and Levetan, who both live in Sandy Springs, provide the Sandy Springs Fire Department and Police Department with a venue and vehicles for training exercises such as the Jaws of Life. The company provides similar services at its locations across the country. “It’s not just about the business, but about our community, our place in the community and our responsibility to the community,” Kogon said. “If you’re planning on being there for generations, you have to take care of your business and make sure your business is helping your community.”

minutes, Parker said. The State Farm project isn’t the only development planned near a MARTA station, transit officials said. Other projects are planned at stations around Atlanta, including Brookhaven-Oglethorpe, Avondale, Edgewood-Candler Park and King Memorial. “MARTA is open for business. We are looking for opportunities to partner with the private and public sector,” Parker said. Unlike other large transit systems around the country, MARTA gets no state funding. And sales tax revenue comes only from Fulton and DeKalb counties and the city of Atlanta. MAR-
TA is still recovering from the recession, when routes were decreased and fares were raised in an effort to combat financial challenges and falling ridership. “We are in the midst of a lot going on at MARTA,” Parker said. “We’re an agency that’s undergoing some enormous challenges.” MARTA is the ninth largest transit system in the country. It was established 35 years ago, in 1979, at roughly the same time as transit agencies in other major cities, such as San Francisco and Washington, D.C. But those cities have more than 100 miles of rail, compared with just 48 in Atlanta, Parker said. “I want to see our transit system go from good to great to expanding,” he said.

Local sketch artists capture emotion in facial expressions BY MARTHA NODAR Members of a Buckhead-based arts group are showing their impressions on facial expressions in an exhibit at the Buckhead Branch of Fulton County Public Library. The “Face and Psyche” exhibit, which continues through May 29, includes the works of artists from Brookhaven, Buckhead, Sandy Springs and Dunwoody: Wendy Adams, Leon Borchers, Robert Christie, Carol Dew, Jason Espey, Helene Johnson, Richard Russell and Patricia Silbiger. They’re members of the Atlanta Artists Center, a nonprofit, and one of its subgroups, the AAC Tuesday Sketch Group, which meets every Tuesday morning to sketch a portrait of a model. A sketch is a quick record of an artist’s visual impression. It may either stand alone in its own right or be used as a step toward a finished composition. Despite their varied artistic styles, the artists say sketching gives them an opportunity to sharpen their observational skills. Russell, for instance, said his primary goal is to depict a model’s facial features. “My philosophy is to catch as many details of the face as possible,” he said. “For me the idea is to capture the models’ psychological demeanor and for them to recognize themselves when they look at the sketch.” But Adams said she feels a vibe permeating the studio between the model and the artists during the first

attempt to capture the model’s facial expression. That is why she prefers to leave the sketch as it is after the session is over. “I often create an unfinished vignette and leave it like that,” Adams said. “I strive to do a quick, understated piece in the presence of the model and not complete it at home because I feel there is an inexplicable transmission or connection between the model, the artist, and the brush that cannot be replicated.”

And Johnson describes her work as being about creating a piece that “radiates energy,” which she believes happens when viewers offer their own interpretations. She wants to create an impression, not a replica of the model’s face. “If a piece has all the details, it does not engage the viewer,” she said. “The idea is to create something with energy, emotion, and to invoke a little curiosity in the viewer. No piece is complete until the viewer is engaged with it.”

A BETTER WAY FORWARD
Kedan Endrias is a girl with dreams. Kedan’s parents moved from Ethiopia to the Atlanta area in 1993 – “like anybody that comes here, they just want a better life for them and their kids,” Kedan said. At one point, Kedan dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. That came after she shadowed a designer at Banana Republic as part of a program through the Boys and Girls Club. She took part in club activities because her mom wanted her and her sisters to have a safe place to go after school. At the Boys and Girls Club, Kedan also dreamed of getting involved in her community. She found she had a passion for community service. “I just really love helping people and getting involved,” said Kedan. Now she’s Student Council President at Cross Keys High School. She is also busy with AP classes and school clubs such as the Future Business Leaders of America, Psychology Club, and Voices of CK Announcements Team. “Some days I’d get home and it would be 7 or 8 at night – that’s my normal routine,” said Kedan, who, in addition to her school assignments, works at a French restaurant and helps care for her younger sisters at home. “My greatest accomplishment would be learning to balance everything I do.” Kedan’s dream now is to graduate college and medical school, and to become a surgeon. She discovered surgery when her aunt had a tumor removed. Her aunt became blind after the operation. Kedan hopes to help people like her aunt one day, as she sees being a doctor as
yet another way to give back to the community. Those who know Kedan attest to her goodwill and her will to succeed. “Kedan is trustworthy, sincere and responsible. She is super helpful to her classmates, she gets along with everyone, and she is a leader in the school,” said her AP Literature teacher, Tracy Vax. “She is a young woman of the highest integrity. She’s one of my favorite students ever.” After working with her to plan International Night, art teacher Kristen Bowen agrees. “Kedan takes the initiative and full responsibility for making sure that things are done the proper way the first go round,” said Bowen. “If Kedan continues to strive for the best with the work ethic that I’ve witnessed from her, she will be unstoppable!”

1000 block of Johnson Ferry Road 30342 – On March 22, a 49-year-old woman reported that someone stole her iPad from a hospital delivery room. The victim did not initially report the March 1 incident but received a call from the Georgia Computer Depot in Cedartown, Ga., on March 19. An employee found an alert on the item which was placed by the victim. He told her that a man and woman, with a small child, came in and sold the iPad “for parts.” Later, when the employee charged it up, he found the alert. Cedartown PD is working with SSPD to obtain information from the store to identify a suspect. The victim’s iPad was returned.

They took the victim’s wallet, and both fled the area on foot.
400 block of Summer Drive 30350 –On March 21, someone kicked in the victim’s apartment door and took a 40-inch TV. Cash and personal photos were also taken.

He said that he had given a female acquaintance a key to his apartment, to stay until he returned from a vacation. She and the items, valued at just under $3,000, were gone.

5900 block of Roswell Road 30328 – On March 22, cops were called to check out someone acting strange. They found a man looking off into the sky and who did not acknowledge the officers who were approaching him. The officers said he looked like he was under the influence of narcotics. He was detained and cuffed for safety reasons. Officers found methamphetamine in his pocket. He was taken to the hospital to be checked out. The man also was wanted on a warrant from Cobb County. He will be transferred to Cobb upon release.

PUBLIC SAFETY 1000 block of Johnson Ferry Road 30342 – On March 24, officers were called to assist security officers at a hospital on a theft-inprogress call. A man entered the hospital and was in the pantry on the fifth floor when he was approached by an employee. The man fled, but was later caught. He told the officers he was homeless. He had a sandwich with him at the time. He was charged with disorderly conduct and sent to the Fulton Jail, Alpharetta Annex. 7800 block of Roswell Road 30350 – On March 24, around 3:30 a.m., officers were called to a convenience store on a personarmed call. They spoke with the employees who pointed out a man, still inside the store. The officers spoke with the man who was not armed. They learned that he came in wanting the employees to sell him beer. Due to the time, they could not. They informed him and he said “What if I shoot you?” When he saw that the employees were taking the threat seriously, he said he was kidding, and really meant to “shoot a twenty” meaning give them $20 to sell the beer anyway. The officers spoke with the man who was shaking, and he then informed the officers that he was a citizen and they could not arrest him. They arrested him and he was charged with disorderly conduct. 5600 block of Roswell Road 30342 – On March 24, store security officers at a discount department store detained a woman who took several items and attempted to leave without paying for them. She told officers that she was stealing clothing to use for job interviews. She had a driver’s license in the name of another person. She was also wanted in North Carolina for FTA on a theft charge. She was arrested. 1100 block of Hammond Drive 30328 – On March 25, just after midnight, a patrol officer passed by the pharmacy and saw a woman writing something on the wall of the store. The 22-year- old woman had written “Creative Flow, Flow in the River of Creation” on the wall. The officer reported that she told him she was having a “Chill Night” and then offered to clean the writing off the wall. She was arrested. 8700 block of Roswell Road 30350 – On March 25, Publix store employees detained a woman who placed items in a bag and passed the registers without paying for the items totaling $26. She was cited and released pending a court date. 1000 block of Hammond Drive 30328 – On March 26, Special Investigation Unit members received a tip of drug activity at the Homestead Suites. Detectives later observed a man, in a car, injecting heroin. They arrested him. They later followed up with a visit to one of the hotel rooms where they spoke with a woman who consented for the officers to come in. They found other drugs including crack cocaine, marijuana and heroin. She appeared to be a street-level dealer. She was arrested and taken to Fulton County Jail. 500 block of Northridge Road 30350 – On March 26, around 11:30 p.m., officers in an apartment complex, observed what appeared to be a drug deal. They saw persons in a car, and a person who appeared to be going from an apartment to the car, which is consistent with street-level drug activity. They pulled a car, which was trying to leave through the wrong entrance (after spotting the cops) and saw one man flee the car. Two more were left in the car and were detained. One man was wanted in East Point on a robbery warrant. Both men were charged with SS
disorderly conduct related to a misdemeanor amount of marijuana found on them. They were taken to jail. The one man was placed in a hold for East Point. Colquitt Road 30350 – On March 28 an officer made a traffic stop and noticed that the driver’s license given to him by the driver didn’t really look a lot like the driver. The driver said it was because he had his hair cut since. The officer suspected the man was lying, so he retrieved his mobile fingerprint scanner, walked back to the car and asked for his fingerprint and, if the driver so felt like it, he could come clean and tell the truth—which he reluctantly did. The real license appeared and that showed the driver was on his second DUI suspension (since April of 2013.) He was charged with driving with the suspended license and a seat belt violation. He was taken to the Fulton Jail Annex in Alpharetta.
OTH ER TH I N GS 8700 block of Roswell Road – Officers on March 21 spoke to a customer at a hairweave store. The 33-year-old woman told officers that she was having a “sew-inweave” done, and at one point, she was “stuck in her head” with the needle used for the weaving process. She wanted the incident documented in case she “gets HIV in six months.” 7000 block of Roswell Road 30328 – On March 23, a
42-year-old woman was walking her dog behind an office complex when a man, whom she identified by name, told her she could not walk the dog there. This started an argument in which the man called her “stupid” and referred to her as a “he-she.” She said this upset her and thus wanted the insults documented. The officer did speak to the man, who said that he was merely enforcing the rules of the complex.
A man and wife reported that the wife
received a voicemail from her sister’s boyfriend, and who said if she did not call her sister back, he would come over and beat her. He said he wasn’t afraid of jail because he’s been there before. They told the officer they do not know what prompted the call.
5600 block of Roswell Road 30342 – On March 23, a woman called and said that she was on the playground area of the apartments around 6:45 p.m. when she saw a man in the breezeway. She said that the man began masturbating. She yelled at the man that she was calling the police. He zipped up and ran from that location, which was the Building 54 area.
