Atlanta Public Schools mulling options for reopening amid ongoing COVID-19 pandemic

Atlanta Public Schools will make a decision in early to mid-July about whether to reopen schools, continue with virtual learning, or a hybrid of the two, according to incoming Superintendent Lisa Herring.
Herring, who assumed command on July 1, held two virtual town hall meetings in June to discuss the 2020-21school year amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. APS also collected opinions from parents via an online survey in June.
Herring laid out three potential scenarios for the Aug. 10 reopening –traditional, virtual, and hybrid – and said the model would be guided by public health data.
“Our top priority is the health and safety of the students, families, and employees,” Herring said, noting that the system would remain flexible as COVID-19 numbers fluctuate.
