CYCLES Of LIFE
By Gary Goettling

Bicycling changed Sue Nagel’s life.
She was riding with a group one day in 1987 when a fellow cyclist — “a really cute guy” — pulled up alongside her and remarked approvingly, “Nice bike.” Momentarily caught off guard, she smiled and returned the compliment: “You have a nice bike, too.”
Three years later, Sue and Bob Neurath tied the matrimonial knot. The Tucker residents have been married — and riding bicycles together — for the 27 years ever since.

local masters player strikes badminton gold
By John RuchLocal badminton player Peter Chang brought home a gold medal from the World Masters Games, an Olympics-style event for older athletes held in April in New Zealand. And he’s telling fellow seniors that they can play the game he loves closer to home.

“It’s the all-body exercise,” said Chang, 69, about badminton’s appeal. “There’s a lot of twisting and turning and smashing … It keeps me very fit and healthy.”
Chang, a real estate investment professional, has lived in Sandy Springs for almost 35 years. He was born in Malaysia, one of many Asian countries where badminton is a popular sport. He grew up playing the game, including on his college team in Hong Kong. When his career began, eventually bringing him to metro Atlanta, he “quit playing for a long time.”
In the late 1990s, Chang’s children headed to college and he found himself not only returning to badminton, but getting serious about it. He began winning some competitions, including the World Morning Cup, an amateur badminton competition, in Taipei, Taiwan.
This year, he headed to Auckland, New Zealand, for the Summer Masters Games, a multi-sports event generally aimed at athletes 35 and older. This year’s edition drew more than 25,000 athletes. Chang competed in both singles and doubles badminton, winning the singles gold in his age category.

“Unfortunately, you pay for everything,” Chang said of the Masters Games, which has drawn some press coverage for significant entrance fees and related travel expenses. However, he said, he enjoyed the competition, the sightseeing, and the chance to meet people from around the globe. He said he met someone from the tiny island nation of Mauritius and competed against a player from Papua New Guinea.
Such international competition begins with local practice. While the similar game of tennis is hugely popular in metro Atlanta, badminton is on the rise, Chang said.
“Badminton is a very popular sport,” Chang said, and follows along “with the influx and growth of the international population, especially after the [1996] Olympics.”
FREE CIRCULATION
Each month, 20,000 copies of Atlanta Senior Life are distributed to selected locations where active seniors live, work, volunteer and play in the north metro areas of Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties.
He said he has about 15 metro Atlanta badminton venues to choose from, ranging from rec centers to gyms to churches, often on restriped tennis or basketball courts. In a sign of the sport’s growing popularity, the area’s first complex of badminton-only courts is set to open this month in Suwanee, Chang said, thanks to an Indian-American fan.
Chang has tried tennis, too, but the techniques are different. Badminton is more about nuanced wrist movements, while tennis is more about arm swings, he said.
“I used to play tennis … but I don’t play anymore because it screws up my badminton,” Chang said. However, there’s another sport catching Chang’s eye: pickleball. A kind of tennis played on a badminton court with paddles and a plastic ball full of holes, pickleball is also growing in local popularity. A new Dunwoody park has pickleball courts included by popular demand.
“I’m going to try pickleball,” Chang said. “I like it.”

Cycles of Life: Senior Riders pedal the Road
They’re members of bicycling’s fastest-growing demographic: seniors over 50, according to an article published by the advocacy group People for Bikes, titled, “Bike Use is Rising Among the Young, But it is Skyrocketing
Among the Old.”
“We ride for fun, and it’s great exercise,” said Bob, 57, a geographer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at its main facility near Emory. He rides about 100 miles a week, usually with a group of cyclists out for a leisurely weekend ride or as a participant in one of the many cycling competitions held around the Southeast.
“We have enough commemorative T-shirts, pint glasses and socks to decorate a theme bar,” he laughed.
In a group ride, where everyone is trying to keep up with each other, older, more experienced cyclists enjoy a little bit of an advantage over younger ones, noted Sue, 58, a program officer for the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the CDC’s Buford Highway campus.

“It takes a long time to reach your maximum potential as a cyclist, so at 50 you can beat up on some of the younger riders because they aren’t fully developed physiologically, and they’re not kicking it quite as seriously,” she explained, adding, “There’s a special feeling about doing that!”
For older adults interested in renewing the love affair they experienced with bike riding as kids, the most important attributes in the equipment are comfort and fit, Nagel said.
“Go to a reputable bike shop that has a staff that will help you pick one out and fit you on it,” he advised. “Getting a bike that’s designed for the terrain you’re going to be riding on is important — a mountain bike, gravel bike, road bike or dirt bike handle differently. And they’ll make sure you have a comfortable, level seat at the correct height, and handlebars that are at the right height and shape.”
Added Sue, “When they’re just beginning, a lot of people don’t know what kind of riding they want to do, so I’d recommend borrowing or renting a couple different styles of bikes to find out what kind you feel most comfortable with.
“If you’ll be trying to keep up with others, like in group
rides, you’ll want equipment comparable to theirs. But if you just want to enjoy a ride, you can get a basic entry-type bike and have a wonderfully good time.”
Over the past five years, Dunwoody retiree Don Hall figured he has cycled more than 55,000 miles — that’s the equivalent of circling the Earth twice, plus a round trip from Atlanta to Seattle.

“My typical ride is 35 milesplus,” said Hall, a Vietnam vet who served in the Marine Corps before embarking on a 50-year career in sales and sales management. “It keeps me in shape, and I enjoy the camaraderie with other riders. Many of my best friends are cyclists.”
Like most everyone else, the 68-year-old Hall started riding bikes as a child to get to friends’ homes and around the neighborhood. Then in 1987, he took up cycling seriously as an adult.
“I was a runner for many years and was challenged to do

a triathlon,” he recalled, “and discovered I liked it much more than running.” Hall stopped running in 1991.
One of his favorite events is the Georgia Golden Olympics, held annually for athletes over 50.
“I’ve been doing that for the past nine years,” said Hall, who participates in four cycling competitions in the 65-69 age group. In addition, “every other year there’s a National Senior Games, and if you qualify in your state you can compete there.”

The 2017 National Games, Hall’s third as a participant, took place in early June in Birmingham, Ala.
With regard to ride preparation, Hall said he drinks a lot of liquids, mostly water, but doesn’t follow a special diet. “I just eat when I’m hungry, but I don’t eat anything two or three hours before a ride.”
But he does monitor his weight closely.
“I weigh myself once or twice per day to make a decision on how much to eat,” he said. “And I chart my weight, which has not varied plus or minus two pounds in several years.
“It drives my wife nuts because she wants three meals a day,” he laughed.
Hall also lifts weights once or twice a week — “not heavy weights, but lots of repetitions” and makes sure to get seven hours of sleep a night.
For anyone considering taking up cycling, Hall’s advice is simple and direct: “Just do it,” he said. “If you commit to consistently putting in the effort, you will develop fitness and learn to love cycling — it becomes a lifestyle, and it’s very addictive.”
Not all seniors enjoy Hall’s exceptional level of physical
fitness. For them, Eric Hunger offers an alternative.
“About 40 percent of our customers are 50 and over,” said Hunger, owner of ElectroBike Georgia in Brookhaven. “Many of these people have hip or knee problems, so they like the fact that they can engage the pedalassist feature and not have to pull up on the pedal like you do on a traditional bike pedal, especially ones with toe guards.” With pedal-assist activated, e-bikes can cover 25-35 miles on a full charge, according to Hunger.
His multi-geared bikes also can be pedaled in the usual manner, or propelled entirely by the electric motor at speeds up to 15 mph, he noted.
“We have a large seat selection as well as baskets, helmets and other accessories so customers can tailor their bike to their specific needs.”
Another option for physically challenged seniors is operated by the city of Decatur.
Silver Spokes is an innovative year-old program designed to “get seniors back on a bike and learn how to ride again,” according to Sara Holmes, adult program supervisor for Decatur Active Living.

For a nominal fee, participants, who typically have mobility issues, attend a class to re-acquaint them with the rules of cycling, then venture out for a supervised ride on adult tricycles provided by the program, along with helmets.
“A lot of our seniors want to learn how to get back on two wheels,” said Holmes, “but we start with three so they can get comfortable with the idea of riding again and not have to worry so much about maintaining stability and balance.”
Silver Spokes’ next round of classes are set for September and October.
If you’d like to learn more, the best place to start is your local bicycle shop. Many shops sponsor group rides and/or have info about groups in the area. Some even offer bicycle rentals. Here are some websites that will get you rolling.

Retirees joke about every day being a vacation, yet they continue to collect one travel brochure after another and suddenly they’re off on another trip.
Maybe holidays are more important than ever? Experts say a vacation is not necessarily a panacea for seniors, yet it can help relieve some of that day-to-day tedium (even if temporarily).

Stan Hibbs, PhD, psychologist and life coach in Dunwoody remains in private practice and enjoys his share of travel, too.

“I think retired people can get into a rut as easily as working

people, so taking a vacation is good for them as well,” said Hibbs. “Often people see retirement as great opportunity to travel more.”
At 70, Hibbs reminds us he’s in a profession in which wisdom and experience are of great value. Almost 11 percent of practicing psychologists in American are over 65 years old, states Hibbs. Many retirees will tell you, they are “working and volunteering more” in retirement than they did in their previous lives. They need a rest.
Psychologist Irene S. Levine,

well known as ‘The Friendship Doctor,’ says she agrees that traveling is important. And travel certainly agrees with her.
Levine provides respected advice as a relationship columnist and contributor to recognized publications, such as Psychology Today. She explains the importance of travel.
“It helps keeps us vital by expanding our world, introducing us to new people, places and things,” she said. “This marked change from daily routines (which tend to get tedious and boring) is bound
to add a hefty dose of joy and renewed energy to our lives.”
It also helps older adults forget about, or at least temporarily suspend, minor pains and worries. But what if finances are somewhat tight? Not all seniors can fund their dream trip to Europe.
Levine has an answer. “Travel doesn’t necessarily have to be exotic or costly,” she said. “There are always new adventures to be found closer to home. It can be walking in a park, a nearby museum or even dinner at an ethnic restaurant [nearby].”
Writer Jill L. Ferguson talks about the benefits of taking a vacation, too. In her article “Health Benefits of Taking a Vacation,” she offers information and guidance.

Ferguson is the founder of Women’s Wellness Weekends, an organization created to provide an oasis of rest and recharging, according to the website. She encourages mixing work with
fun to her cohorts.
She left in May for a 16-day vacation, and Ferguson said she will “still be answering emails and writing an article or two but also be exploring ancient ruins, eating fine food, snorkeling and making new friends.
“I travel frequently and often mix business and pleasure,” she said.

NEW Durable Power of Attorney Law in Georgia
On July 1, 2017, a new law affecting Georgia durable powers of attorney (for financial matters) will go into effect. The Uniform Power of Attorney Act is designed to minimize financial fraud and exploitation. Thus, “general” powers allowing an agent to “do anything the principal could do” may no longer be accepted by banks and other financial institutions. Banks do not have to accept any power of attorney; however, we have been assured that if a customer presents a power of attorney on the new statutory form, the banks will honor it unless there is evidence of fraud, misrepresentation or undue influence over the principal.

Although the statutory form, along with the Georgia code (law), is much better than the one before it, it does not specifically include protections for seniors who are aging and want to take measures to protect their assets in the event they could qualify for government assistance programs, like Veterans Benefits or Medicaid. In order to completely protect yourself, your new power of attorney must include certain “Special Instructions.” Thus, a “standard” form, even on the new statutory form, will not be enough for most seniors who care about protecting their families and their assets.
The Elder & Disability Law Firm of Victoria L. Collier, PC will provide a new statutory power of attorney, with appropriate special instructions, at a 33% DISCOUNT OFF our regular rates for advising, drafting, and executing a financial power of attorney during the months of June, July and August. Call 404-3700696 and speak with a Client Services Representative and tell them, “I’d like the new statutory financial power of attorney.”
Victoria L. Collier is a Certified Elder Law Attorney through the National Elder Law Foundation, and a Fellow of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. Her entire firm is devoted to ensuring seniors age with dignity and grace.

CALL NOW to get your power of attorney updated to the new form so banks will accept it when your loved one needs to use it!

See the World with Your Grandchildren
By Judi KanneRetired Atlanta resident Joan Cioffi finds her “grandmother trips” one of her life’s highlights.
In fact, Cioffi recently promised to have one-on-one grandma trips with each of her seven grandchildren. “A seventy-plus year old grandma traveling alone with a teenager takes planning, a relaxed attitude and plenty of flexibility,” Cioffi said.
On one of those trips, Cioffi and her granddaughters Christina and Sydney visited Hawaii and stopped at the Valley of the Temples.

The destination and activities are less important than just being open to being with them in a new, less familiar setting, she says.
“No parents, no television and no rigid agenda helps us appreciate the person they are—and allows me to be myself,” Cioffi shared with enthusiasm.
Dunwoody resident Randa Barto raves about her experiences with her grandchildren on trips organized by Road Scholar, a travel organization that offers intergenerational trips.
Barto also has seven grandchildren. Hers live in three different states. “I’ve taken 14 trips with grandchildren,” she said, “at last count.”
In fact, Barto mentions a couple of (now grown) grandchildren that followed their dreams based on Road Scholar experiences. She advocates introducing grandchildren to career-related trips.
“I wanted them to try something out,” Barto said. “One grandson wanted to try flying.”
During a past shared journey, that grandson, Andy, then about 10 years old, told Barto, “Grandma, this is what I want to do.” Barto says she discovered three flight-related programs for the two of them and raves about her own experience as well.
Andy’s first flight as a copilot was at the Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson, Kan. He and Barto also took part in the Intergenerational Program at Utah Valley University at the Provo Airport close to Salt Lake City, Utah.
“Even Grammy got to fly a plane,” Barto said. She offered to share her student pilot’s log. Andy graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado this past May and is in training to become an Air Force pilot.
With granddaughter Morgan, Barto said they went to London to try Harry Potter Camp, but that was only the first trip. It was so successful that they chose a Paris vacation on a subsequent
occasion.
Morgan was particularly interested in fashion design—and that’s the program they found together. Today, Barto’s granddaughter is a college graduate and is working in the fashion industry. Another grandson, Jonathan, was intrigued with New York City as a young boy. And leave it to Barto, she discovered the perfect trip.

Today Jonathan is studying and playing football for Columbia University. Barto thinks that part of his comfort in choosing New York over other venues is due to exploring the city years before with his grandma. It’s clear that with the many intergenerational trips to choose from, the only fear Barto may have is running out of grandchildren.
it’s your experience that matters.

come fly with me
It’s finally time! It’s time to hop on a plane and take that getaway you’ve been waiting for all year.
You’ve worked hard, you’ve chosen your destination, planned your itinerary and purchased your tickets.

You’ve shrinkwrapped all your clothes and crammed them and your essentials into a 9”x 14”x 22” carry-on bag, so that you won’t be charged an extra 25 bucks each way for luggage and so that your bag will be stored reassuringly above your own head and you won’t run the risk of checking it and having it wind up in Bogota, Columbia (which has happened).

You’ve parked your car in Row 64-G of the Wherez-My-Car lot, and you’ve stashed your ticket in a very special place that you will completely forget a week from now.
You’ve snaked through a security line so long that you became briefly comatose and then finally awoke expecting to see Splash Mountain in front of you.
wait your turn. Now the flight attendant is calling for their Premium boarding:
“All our Diamond members, Medallion members, Pendant members, Ornament members, Olympians, Super-Duper-SpecialElite Club members, Nobel Prize Winners and Poet Laureates may board.”

That’s not you. You watch the crowd file into the jet bridge while an even larger crowd gathers, expectantly.
Robin’s Nest
“It’s now time for Priority boarding: Our Platinum members and Gold members, our Comfort level, Cushy level, Posh level and also our Virgin Lithuanian Fly Club members, please come to the agent, with your tickets in hand.”
Moments pass.
“Zone 1 may now board: that’s Silver, Silver medallion, Blue Silver, Flying Silver, Hi-Ho Silver, Corporate Silver and High Achievers.”

You’ve escalated down and up and side to side and walked and trammed and shuttled and peoplemoved to your terminal.

You’ve found your gate and settled yourself between a teenager who is working his way through the jumbo bag of fried onion rings and a sleeping woman who is flying stand-by and has been there since last Tuesday.

At last, it’s time to board!
You listen as the flight attendant announces that the crew is now ready for “Pre-board,” which allows mothers additional time to get on the plane with their young children who all happen to have ear-infections. (I was one of those moms).

You check your ticket and
Still not you. “Zone 2 may now board: Nickel, Copper, Zinc, Aluminum, Magnesium, Germanium, Plebeians and the Red Birds and Blue Birds reading groups.”
There’s only one zone left, and it’s got to be yours.
“Zone 3: Gallium, Boron, Silicon and the rest of the Periodic Table may now board, plus Paper and Wood.

“There is no more room in the overhead compartment for your carry-on bags, Zone 3, but we will check them for you for your convenience. We assure you that, although you will not find them in baggage claim at your destination, they will safely arrive in Bogota, Columbia.

“We hope you enjoy your flight.”
And so your trip begins. Let’s hope the rest of your vacation is first class.

Flying High on Wings
By Isadora PenningtonRoll up your sleeves — it’s time to talk about one of my favorite, messy eats. Wings are a popular bar food with something of a cult following across the nation.

As with many popular dishes, there are multiple claims to the invention of the wing. One of the more popular theories is that they were a creation of restaurateur Teressa Bellissimo at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, NY. Some say Bellissimo made buffalo
wings as a late-night snack for her son and friends, while others believe it was due to accidentally ordering too many wings and needing to find something to do with them. Regardless of the reasons for inventing the dish, the buffalo wing was an instant success at the bar and quickly spread nationwide. Vastly different effects can be achieved by changing the sauces or rubs that are used, and wings are typically served with ranch or bleu cheese for dipping.

THE ZABAN TOWER
mAKE YOURSELF Mosquito-Proof
Summer is here and so are those pesky mosquitoes. The stores have stocked their garden centers with citronella, lemongrass and other lemon-scented plants in hopes that homeowners will buy them to deter mosquitoes from their outdoor living spaces.

Save yourself some money and don’t purchase them strictly for mosquito control. They do not work!

The only way these plants will work is if you crush the leaves and rub them all over your skin. However, they do add a nice fragrance to your outdoor space.
The best way to repel mosquitoes is to remove any standing water. Water can collect in many spaces you might not think of. Magnolias with their waxy leaves can hold water, as do French drains, plant saucers, gutters, etc.
If you have any drains that don’t drain well, you can place mosquito dunks in them. They kill mosquito larvae which helps keep them from breeding. The dunks usually come in a pack of four or six, though you only need a piece of the dunk for most areas of water.

If you have a bird bath, be sure to change the water every other day, or add a dripper to it.
As always, try to stay inside during late afternoon to dusk when the mosquitos are most active. If you’re having an evening outdoor get together, place some fans around. Fans actually blow the mosquitoes away. They’re effective and keep the air moving.

Also, it’s a good idea to wear long sleeves. If you choose to use bug spray, you’ll want to know that the more effective sprays are those that contain DEET.
Enjoy your summer outdoors, but be mindful of those pesky mosquitoes!

Making Connections Stitch by Stitch
By Isadora PenningtonOn a drizzly Tuesday afternoon, a cozy Buckhead needlepoint shop buzzes with activity. The phone rings time and again, and every few minutes another customer walks through the door to InStitches, greeting staff members by name.
The shop’s walls are filled with embroidery designs and spools of thread. Laughter and conversation can be heard from a back room, where a group of older adults sit together and work on their projects.

“This isn’t work, it’s pleasure. It’s something that we want to do,” explained Gail Dubler, a crafter who frequents the shop each Tuesday with a group of friends.
The regulars chat and socialize while supporting one another in their creative projects. Discussions span matters ranging from technical assistance to everyday life.
“We make such great friends here,” said Anna Mershon, and the room echoed with affirmation.
“Lifelong friends,” Cheryl Weiss concurred.
“We have a blast,” said Pam Cornutt, “It’s the highlight of my week.”

The workspace is free for the group to use, when not booked for a class or workshop, to get encouragement, support and technical assistance from one another and the shop staff.
Jeanene Weiner, the owner of InStitches, bought the business in 2013. She has crafted with thread since she was a small child. The daughter of a seamstress, Weiner has extensive experience with hand sewing, cross stitch, embroidery and other needlework techniques. Weiner’s goal is to help stitchers with their needlepoint, and

to encourage others to try it for themselves, no matter their experience level.
It’s not unusual to see groups of mostly seniors working on projects at the shop, but Weiner says she’s pleased when younger people come in to learn needlepoint. “We try to encourage young people because we don’t want it to fizzle out,” she said. “We’re always happy to help.”
While newcomers might feel intimidated or worry that their skills aren’t good enough, the staff at InStitches says that anyone can learn how to make works of their own. “You’re never too old to learn,” Weiner continued, “because that’s what keeps you young.”
Needlepoint is considered a “heritage craft,” an activity which requires manual dexterity and skill, as well as the understanding of traditional materials and techniques, to make useful things. In another sense, needlepoint becomes a heritage craft because there are few resources to learn these skills. Many needleworkers learned from their parents and grandparents, and they share a drive to pass along their knowledge to others.
The handmade pieces made by loved ones often become family treasures. As Weiner puts it, “people want to be remembered.” She notes that she has some handmade pillowcases and gifts from her mother that she treasures to this day.
“It’s something that lasts,” crafter Barbara Melich said. Along with Dubler, she’s a new member to the Tuesday group.
“We’re learning so much,” she said. While the two admit they have room to grow in their techniques, they also celebrate the successes of finishing small projects. “When you finish something, it’s awesome,” said Dubler. “It’s such a good feeling.”
In addition to offering supplies and tools, the shop provides important social connections for needlepoint artists. Weiner recalls asking a room full of crafters if any of them had lived through cancer, and nearly all of them raised their hands.

People undergoing cancer treatments often benefit from having something to keep their hands and minds busy.

“They just stitched their way through it,” said Weiner with admiration.
Weiner wants the shop to serve as a resource for everyone who’d like to try or already enjoys the art of needlepoint, and in a larger sense, she hopes to play a part of keeping the craft alive.

“We’re thrilled that Jeanene has given us such a wonderful place to work,” said Cheryl Weiss, looking up briefly from her needlepoint project.
Stitching Is Good for You
It’s common knowledge among needlework enthusiasts that stitching can be very relaxing. Proof of it has been documented by Dr. Herbert Benson, a pioneer in a mind/body medicine and author of “The Relaxation Response,” published in 2000. Benson says that the repetitive action of needlework can induce a relaxed state, similar to that associated with meditation.
In fact, embroidery and other needlecrafts offer many health benefits. Not only do they provide an outlet for creativity, offer socialization and strengthen hand-eye coordination, they also:
• Lift the spirits, according Barry Jacobs, Ph.D., of Princeton University in his 1998 research on depression;
• Relieve stress, as stated by a 2007 paper by the Programs in Occupational Therapy of Columbia University in New York;
• Protect cognitive function, as suggested by a 2011 Mayo Clinic study;
• And can even reduce the risk of dementia, a result found by a 1995 study conducted in Université de Bordeaux II, France.
Find a home in the Mountains before you retire

The mountains are a cool place to be and many metro Atlantans plan to retire there. But they’re not all waiting to claim their little spot of heaven. Some are making the move to find or build their mountain home and enjoy it now.
Duane and Kim Champlin are currently overseeing construction of their Old Toccoa Farm mountain retreat. “We had a weekend cabin near Blue Ridge before we retired, and we fell in love with the area,” Kim said.
Old Toccoa Farm, just 85 miles north of Atlanta, is near historic Blue Ridge, Ga., and about 15 miles from the Aska Adventure Area, which features camping, hiking and water activities like tubing, canoeing and kayaking. Buying a mountain home has become a common plan for many couples who retire near communities such as Blue Ridge. Now real estate agents say they see couples in their 50s and early
60s buying or building mountain homes they plan to retire to when the time comes.
“Many metro Atlanta residents are becoming empty-nesters, but they’re still working while planning for the future before it’s time to retire,” said Katie
Wercholuk, marketing director for Big Canoe Company, LLC. She says that she has seen an increase in purchase by these “pre-retirees.”
Faron W. King, Broker/Owner, Coldwell Banker High Country Realty, says that while many mountain homes still are bought

by retirees, that’s not the whole story. “We’re seeing younger buyers wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of Atlanta for a weekend getaway, and it turns into a part-time home if their career allows them to telecommute,” said King.

He suggests that people not wait for retirement to begin looking for their dream retirement home. Good advice, considering the current rush to the hills.
According to Duane, the couple wanted long-range mountain views. “We got that, plus we’re living on a golf course in a gated community,” he said.
The Champlins moved to the north Georgia mountains from Gwinnett County. What they’ve found in Old Toccoa Farm is peace and quiet, golf courses, the Toccoa River, wooded trails and “the friendliness of everyone we come across,” said Kim.
Continued on page 22

Continued from page 20
They note that they have lost a few conveniences, but say they’ve gained much more. “We have a relaxed and friendly environment,” said Duane, “and a whole lot less congestion!”
Kim L. Knutzen, Managing Broker, Harry Norman REALTORS® Blue Ridge Office, reports that there has been an influx of buyers in the new development. “Old Toccoa Farm is the only fly fishing and golf community in our area,” she said.

Keith and Robin Sievers label themselves “outdoor people.” They’ve settled into their new two-story mountainside home, with main and terrace levels, in Big Canoe, a gated private community set in the rolling mountains of Jasper, Ga.
The climate and natural landscapes of north Georgia are perfect, the Seivers say, and so
are the amenities they enjoy in Big Canoe, where they’ve found the lifestyle they enjoy. Big Canoe boasts a unique Jeep Trail, awardwinning 22+ mile trail system for hiking and biking, outdoor dog parks, waterfalls, three lakes and scenic mountain landscapes.
“It’s amazing to live in a beautiful mountain community that’s 30 minutes from the north Atlanta suburbs, and just 30 minutes from the start of the Appalachian Trail,” said Robin.
“More importantly, though, are the wonderful people who live here and the many cherished friendships we’ve made.”
They admit that mountain driving was a challenge at first, but say that they quickly adapted.
“While some driving is required to get to everything we need, the essentials are close at hand,” said Keith, “and we’ve learned to group our errands into enjoyable ‘urban safaris’.”
When Gary and Christy Ray decided to move from a mountain/lake area in northwest Nevada to be closer to family, they wanted to locate a similar environment in Georgia. They found their mountain cabin in Love Mountain, an upscale rustic Riverwalk Toccoa

neighborhood that features wooded settings and mountain views, in Morganton, Ga.
“The north Georgia mountains are a perfect fit for us,” said Gary. “With the beautiful mountains, sunsets, lakes, affordable living, proximity to Atlanta and wonderful Southern hospitality, we couldn’t have made a better choice.”
Christy adds that everyone in Blue Ridge has welcomed them with open arms. “Within two months, we’ve made a lot of new friends and already feel like a part of the community,” she said.
The area offers a variety of activities, music venues and craft fairs, along with outstanding restaurants. “This is what we love about the community,” Christy said. “We attended a fabulous wine pairing dinner at a local restaurant in Blue Ridge and met some lovely people who we plan to see again.”
The Rays enjoy the peace, slower pace and mild traffic. “There’s no comparison to major cities—great food, Southern hospitality and the natural beauty of the north Georgia mountains,” said Gary. “This has been a great choice for our retirement.”
When asked about the best part of living in north Georgia, Christy answered, “The inner peace that we have when we sit on our balcony and look out at the beautiful mountains. You can’t put a price on that.”
She notes that there have been a few small issues, most notably, learning about log cabin ownership and adjusting to a more humid climate than northwest Nevada, where the annual average humidity is 10 percent. “But really, they’re no longer issues after living here for two months,” she said.

Head for the hills and breathe deeply while you reconnect with nature, with others — and yourself.

Healing Art
HealiUm Center brings community together

“The word HealiUm has a big red U, what do you think that symbolizes?” Jim Peera asked. “It signifies you; today is your day. It’s your day to be you.”
Peera is the director and artist behind the local art collective HealiUm Center in Candler Park. He runs the organization with the help of his wife Donna, their children Haseena and Iman, and a team of dedicated volunteers.

Originally from Tanzania in East Africa, Peera and his family fled during the Uganda-Tanzania War to France, where they lived as refugees before eventually moving to England. After his father’s death, Peera’s brother in America suggested that he relocate there to complete high school. He later attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and it was there that he met Donna, who was attending The University of Arizona.
“I was a designer, so she was my model,” he explained. “We traveled together, and we’ve been halfway around the world together as a couple.”
After growing tired of living in California, they moved across the country to Atlanta to escape the fog and crowd. “Little did we know…” he trailed off with a chuckle. In the 25 years that followed, they have built a family and a community here in the city.
Peera’s appreciation for America and the city is what led him to come up with the HealiUm Center concept. “It’s for the community, that’s what it is for,” he said. “I’ve been in America for about 40 years now, so the
idea comes to me at a time when things are falling apart and for me it was – how do I contribute to a country that has done so much for me and opened their hearts? How can I pay them back? How can I pay it forward?
“I felt that there was a disconnect in America,” Peera continued. “People were spending a lot of effort and time with their kids, but the adults were being left out. The parents were taking care of kids, making sure they went to art classes in school, but the parents fell short.”
He noticed that most adults could only really let loose at bars or sporting events, and not a lot of spaces were dedicated to creativity for people of all ages.
“There needs to be a place where people can come out and express themselves freely, because at the end of the day, we are all creative beings, you know.”
The HealiUm Center features an art gallery, art studio, photo studio, event room, Zen room, music and performance space, and a sanctuary. While it may look unassuming on the outside, to step inside is to be transported to another world. Colorful artwork of all types adorns the walls, rows of tables with easels await the next art class, and local musicians play in the basement of the church. The walls are painted bright colors with a specific correlation to colors of the chakra that infuse the different spaces with varying energies.
For just $15, visitors can partake in weekly Open Studio sessions that occur in the evenings. There’s a fully equipped stage for musicians and the fee covers art supplies such as canvases, paints and brushes. Volunteers can also work in exchange for access to the

center, and the space can be rented out for parties and group events.

One of the current, on-going events is the Art of the Heal, a campaign to send over 100,000 pieces of art to the White House by July 4. Inspired by the actions of and controversy surrounding the current administration, Peera intends to provide a creative outlet for coping with the unstable political landscape.
“The idea was to kind of get people to come together and really explore the fact that we all have a lot more in common than what is different,” he said. “There’s a lot more commonality within this society and the people than the guy at the top wants us to believe.”
While the Art of the Heal project hopes to bring artwork to the attention of politicians on a national level, the HealiUm center continues to provide affordable and accessible creative opportunities to their growing community of artists in Atlanta. “A lot of the kids, they call us mom and dad, it’s like their home here,” he laughed. “This is their creative home, they come and share their stories with us, so we have built this cool extended family of artists.”
