ART DIRECTOR & PHOTO EDITOR’S NOTE This is our first year in our current roles as Art Director and Photo Editor. Reporter has seen tremendous growth not only in our organization, but also in our staff. We have a diverse group of artists, designers and photographers from multiple disciplines and year levels. In recent issues of Reporter especially, it feels like we have found a unified, creative voice. As our team grew throughout the year, we found a rhythm to our workflow. We streamlined our method. We refined our visual assets. We ensured that our staff was all on the same page. These changes have allowed for a smoother production process, shifting our focus from restrictive technicalities to broad concepts. By prioritizing consistency, our voice has taken a more definite form as an advocate for the student body. We actively set high standards for our respective crafts, and that decision has left us with a motivated staff ready to find innovative ways to tell stories. As the curators of this year’s Art & Photo Issue, we’re proud to dedicate this edition to the most hardworking and talented people on our visual team. In the year to come, we will continue to seek out ways to push the boundaries of our developed style and brand; we hope to dive deeper into different platforms for showcasing our unique perspective. Reporter is a living, breathing publication that can only become stronger and more realized as we advance.

SECOND YEAR, SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING
Debmalya Ray Choudhuri is a writer and photographer from India currently based out of Rochester, N.Y. where he is studying for his master’s degree. The following is a selection of images from his body of work Tat Tvam Asi. “Tat Tvam Asi (English: All That Is) is a psycho-geographical expedition through a space hidden away from the chaos of the urban city life. Surrounded by the news of political violence, hatred and confronting personal crises, and my own sickness after a year of suffering, [I felt provoked] to go on a journey, not knowing the destination. A place where my very identity would matter less. An unknown land. This helped me to restore a balance in myself and to find my position in the world again.”

T
he time has come. The colleges at RIT must battle each other to the death. The sole victor will receive the rare and never before seen gift of school funding. The game will begin when the final brick drops, and the faint and far cry of an overworked student will fill the windy corridors of campus. Will you be the victor? Choose your character wisely.
LAUREN PERTTULA
—
THIRD YEAR, GRAPHIC DESIGN Lauren Perttula is a designer and illustrator from Idaho with a love for design, art, poetry and working in print-based media. Their promotional piece for the non-profit “TLC for BFRBs” is featured in Cohber Press’ 2019 FUEL project: “For the Good,” along with 11 other design students’ work. In the rare event they have free time, they go on walks, ride a bike or enjoy hikes in the Idaho mountains.
KGCOE Kate Gleason Character of Engineering Skills Handy skills — can create anything like a robot army, photon blasters and spaceships to get the hell out of the game. Need extra help? Can contact aliens with satellites. Get a cool alien army. Good with engineering chemicals. Whip up batches of Harry Potter type shit. Shapeshifting, invisibility — you got it!
Weakness Poor communication skills — hella introverted. If you do contact Aliens, you don’t know what to say to them. In rare chance of communication, they interrupt other players with “actually,” every other sentence to show knowledge. Peeps will just stop taking to you. Hard to procreate to survive. Just a bunch of nerdy guys. And one girl.
CAD Character of Art and Design Skills
Weaknesses
High knowledge of human body and their weak points from hours of naked figure and medical drawing.
Two heads that constantly clash. One is a pretentious hipster and the other is an Anime nerd.
Unique killing methods. High art skills = convincing illusions. Draw a tunnel on side of a wall and watch others drive straight into a brick wall.
Cannot travel far. Glitch in the game stops them from leaving labs of James E. Booth and Frank E. Gannett.
Underestimated. Access shields to make the character appear like they ain’t doing shit, but while planning a super extra murder.
Somehow get outdoors? Will die automatically from burns when exposed to light — bodies only accustomed to dark and dingy basements.

ANGELA KRIEG
—
FOURTH YEAR, ILLUSTRATION After growing up among the solitary and green mountains of eastern New York, Angela Krieg focuses on sequentialism and transmedia storytelling in her works. From publishing to motion graphics, she always has her eye aimed towards the entertainment industry where she wishes to explore different types of storytelling. She lets her projects determine their medium and uses them to the greatest advantage. Her art is allegorical and, more often than not, refers back to the masters of the past. In spring 2018, she studied in London and traveled to over half a dozen countries, where she walked the same streets as Van Gogh, Michelangelo and Klimpt.

UNIQUE FAIR
—

His career goal is to create art that empowers and encourages people to take action against inequality and injustice. Outside of working for Reporter, Fair interns at Blue Toucan Studios in the city of Rochester.
