Charles “Chip” Rocha Cleared

EPHS Voke Principal is one of many wins for Attorney Tom McAndrew

By Bob Rodericks “I want you to know up front, that I have represented many East Providence employees or officials and, respectfully, I would tell you that I usually win here,” attorney Thomas J. McAndrew confidently told former East Providence Schools Superintendent Taras Herbowy. “Let’s settle this without much expense to all.” McAndrew was representing former school department Director of Buildings and Grounds, Bruce Bird, several years ago. Herbowy and the school committee were “firing” Bird for reasons they related to his job performance. However, after all the evidence was submitted, Bird and McAndrew prevailed. Bird, from Kingston, Massachusetts chose to accept a settlement in lieu of keeping his job. It was, as McAndrew had predicted, one of about 9 or 10 costly losing lawsuits for the city of East Providence through the years. “It’s about doing what is right and fair for everyone. It shouldn’t have to become a matter for the courts,” McAndrew told the Reporter recently. However when East Providence workers feel they need an attorney to protect themselves, many have called Tom McAndrew. McAndrew has extensive experience in labor and employment matters, representing various public entities, and private sector employers in proceedings before Federal and State Courts, the National Labor Relations Board, State Labor Relations Board, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Human Rights Commission, and arbitrators. He has successfully tried many cases in State and Federal Courts and has negotiated in excess of 400 Collective Bargaining Agreements in the private and public sector. McAndrew was also a Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Education for Rhode Island from 1974-1979. continued on page 6...

EP’s Own “Rocky” Announces His Retirement By Gina Wesley-Silva

BMX pro Kevin Robinson is a legend in East Providence and throughout the world. During his 21 year pro career, he has achieved many startling distinctions including holding the world record for height, and receiving 10 X Games medals. But, every legend has an ending, and Robinson says it is now time to end his competitive career. “The X Games in Los Angeles in August 2013, will be my last competition. This is the first public announcement of this, so now I can’t back out,” he laughed. Robinson explained that the decision to retire was not an easy one. “It’s been a battle in my head for the last 3 or 4 years, as to where and when and how, or even if I would ever retire, but now it finally feels right!” Robinson says he is looking forward to retiring from competition for a variety of reasons, but mostly because of the stress it places on his family and on his body. “I just had my 44th orthopedic surgery. I need a hip replacement, and I just had another concussion last week while competing in the Brazil X Games. I had a bad crash and got knocked out, and when I woke up my wife was crying and my kids were all crying, and I thought to myself, “‘I can’t keep doing this to them!’ ” Cheerfully referring to his past injuries and surgeries as his “list of setbacks”, Robinson shared more of his medical history, “In addition to my 44 orthopedic surgeries, I have had 21 broken bones, and almost 100 concussions all together. And, in 25 of those concussions, I was completely knocked out and unconscious,” he said. Now 41 years old, Robinson added, “I’m just really tired of picking myself up from the bottom of the ramp! My kids and my wife deserve to have a dad and a husband!” When asked about his personal role models, Robinson says he admires his parents, Howard and Carole Robinson most. Outside his family however, he cites admiration for “Rocky” creator and persona, Sylvester Stallone. “I’ve been a huge Sylvester Stallone fan all my life, because of his story. He started at the bottom of the barrel, but he would not compromise. He wanted to make Rocky on his own terms, and he wanted to star in it, and he did! He would not settle for any other offer, because he knew what was right for him. I feel like my life is a Rocky story too, because nobody believed in me for the longest time. Nobody thought I could do this,” he said.

Kevin Robinson in action!

Robinson further explained that early on he was often criticized for pursuing his chosen career, but like his famous role model, he followed his passion nonetheless, and eventually succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. This, he says taught him an important life lesson. “Why does my path have to be dictated for me by everyone else? It’s up to me to decide what is right for me, instead of listening to someone else telling me what I should or should not do! People need to decide that for themselves! We’re all different, with different likes and talents and habits, and that’s what is so great about this world. So, I followed my own path, and I am glad I did,” he said. Perhaps surprisingly, Robinson says that his love for East Providence has also inspired much of his success in life too. “East Providence is part of my DNA. It is part of my personality, part of my core. It is what I am about. It’s like a family member. I know that I can always come home to this place. It is the place that built me. Sometimes you go through life and face different adversities, and sometimes the best choice that you can make is to go back to simplicity. Go back home, and get re-grounded. Go back to the place that built you,” he said. One of the many ways in which Robinson shows his love for East Providence was in the forming of his K-Rob Foundation. “I wanted to help EP kids stay involved in athletics. If a family cannot afford to have their kids participate in a sport, they can contact the foundation and if the family meets the guidelines, we can pay the fees for them,” he said. Robinson says retiring from competition will give him more time to focus on his other business endeavors. He says he will remain involved in the X Games as a commentator for ESPN, and he looks forward to doing more motivational speaking on healthy life skills. “I am putting down the bike, and picking up the mic,” he said. Acknowledging that he still loves to ride, Robinson says he will still ride for fun and will push himself under his own terms, but will not be hindered by the limitations of professional competitive guidelines. “The drive and the passion that I used to feel when I got on a ramp at a competition, I now feel when I do motivational speaking, or do a demo, or when I watch my kids do their sports,” he said. I then asked Robinson to share his feelings about his upcoming final competition in Los Angeles. “The LA X Games will be my swan song. That will be the end of my “Rocky Story”. He paused momentarily, fighting back his tears. “It will be my 20th X Game. I started at the bottom of the barrel in competition. I was getting second to last place, and third to last place. But, I worked my way up! It took me eleven years to get my first gold medal. And, I did everything the way I wanted to do it, with no regrets. My career has been the way I wanted to build it. I have always done it per my terms and nobody else’s. People always told me things couldn’t work, or it couldn’t be done, and that was always my motivation to prove them wrong,” Robinson then said that he would love to continue his tradition of defying the odds and the naysayers, but that he has a more practical plan for his last competition, “If it was up to me I would probably try a double 900 flair, because I have always wanted to do that. In my heart I know I have the passion to do it, and the drive, but my body just can’t do that stuff anymore. So, I’m actually letting my wife, my doctor, and my agent, write down the runs that they want me to do. And, I have to sign an actual contract agreeing to whatever they say. And, now that this is public knowledge too, I can’t back out of this either,” Robinson laughed! East Providence News Briefs By Bob Rodericks

City Police Chief On Paid Leave

City Manager Peter Graczykowski has placed East Providence Police Chief Joseph Tavares on administrative leave. The action amounts to a suspension with pay while newly appointed police Major, Chris Parella is serving as interim Chief. No one is giving specifics but Tavares' appointment as Chief was not supported by a majority of police rank and file. Although Tavares was an East Providence resident and a graduate of EPHS, he spent his police career in Warwick, RI. Many police officers were supporting a promotion to Chief from within the department. The Reporter had received a complaint from a veteran officer who was upset with Chief Tavares promotions of some officers. "It is surprising that (name redacted) is going to be recommended for a high position because he is under investigation. This person was investigated for (1) Untruthfulness (2) Incompetence (3) Violating Office of Professional Policies and Procedures (4) Violating the Police Officers Bill of Rights (5) Violation of Civil Rights," claims the source. When presented with this allegation, Chief Tavares said that it amounted to a disgruntled officer. "We'll be dealing with it," Tavares said. "I know who is telling you that," he replied. As has been the case in developments with several other police chief/city manager disputes going back to the days of former city managers Pete Pakey and Earl Sandquist, once again an East Providence City Manager's fate seems intertwined with the appointment of a police chief. Graczykowski is still without a contract. He has been an applicant for jobs elsewhere, while his status here has been unclear since his hiring. Current council Mayor, James Briden, is embroiled in a dispute with Ward 4 council person Chrissy Rossi. After City Manager Peter Graczykowski suspended Chief Tavares, Briden turned to the budget commission for help. Mayor Briden has stated that he contacted the state budget officer because it is in "the best interest of the city." "I asked them to re-convene on personnel issues," said Briden.

They're Back! (Budget Commission)

Rosemary Gallogly responded immediately to Mayor Briden's request. In an April 18th tersely written letter by Gallogly to the dormant budget commission, she states:

"At the March 28, 2013 meeting, the East Providence Budget Commission (EPBC) delegated its authority under RI Gen. Laws 45-9 to the City Council, School Committee, City Manager and Superintendent, in order to reinstate their authority as provided by the City Charter and Code of Ordinances. Effective immediately, I am rescinding that delegation of authority for all personnel matters. All personnel actions will need to be approved by the EPBC until further notice." Thus, effective immediately the city manager and the superintendent of schools, Kimberly Mercer have been prohibited from making any personnel decisions. All staffing authority is now back with the budget commission. This includes the newly hired consolidated Human Resources Director, Kathleen Waterbury. New School Superintendent Mercer recently hired Dawn August, with whom she previously worked in Pawtucket. August was hired to fill a curriculum director's vacancy caused when Elizabeth Salzillo left East Providence to accept a similar job in Pawtucket. Julie Motta, also previously working in Pawtucket, was hired as a Director of Education in East Providence. All hiring is halted until the budget commission re-convenes.

Rossi Steaming and will soon be Streaming

Ward 4 council person Chrissy Rossi is livid. So much so that she has filed a complaint with the city police department against Mayor Briden. The city charter prohibits council members from getting involved with personnel matters. Rossi charges that Briden did just that by bringing back the budget commission "exclusively" for personnel. In an interview with the Reporter, Rossi released a lengthy statement: "As one Council Member of the City of East Providence, it is my position that Rosemary Booth Gallogly, the Director of Finance for the State of RI, has been baited into using the power of the State of Rhode Island to control a personnel matter in the City of East Providence. At this time, the city’s well qualified Human Resources Director is scrutinizing allegations (against the police chief) through the proper channels. It is well within the purview of the HR Director of any corporation or municipality to investigate allegations of scandalous mismanagement and a thorough investigation cannot be properly conducted with the alleged wrongdoer controlling the outcome by remaining at his post." Rossi is leaning on

the city charter to bolster her case against the Mayor. City Manager Graczykowski does acknowledge that there is an investigation taking place against now police chief Tavares, by new personnel director, Kathleen Waterbury. Rossi's statement continued: "By East Providence Charter, the City Manager has the full authority to relieve an employee of their duties pending an investigation. There has been no altering of the employee’s compensation or benefits. This is a disciplinary matter and 45-9-6 of the RI State Law regarding budget commissions clearly shows again that the City Manager is well within his rights even by budget commission standards. I applaud the HR Director and City Manager for taking the position Continued on next page...

they have in the investigation process. The State of Rhode Island has openly abused its authority by getting involved with a personnel matter in the City of East Providence," said Rossi. Rossi continued to quote the charter in her quest to file a complaint against Briden. "Any councilman violating the provisions of this section, or voting for a resolution or ordinance in violation of this section, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof shall cease to be a councilman. Furthermore, The Budget Commission has now involved themselves in the one place, by law, they have no standing, a disciplinary matter. It is clearly written in their own law and on top of that, Ms. Gallogly delegated personnel authority back to the city on March 28, 2013 which reverted us back to home rule," Rossi concludes. "This is a budget commission, not a personnel board. I am shocked that Ms. Gallogly would put her reputation on the line over a political power grab and I am livid that Mr. Briden would go behind everyone's back and reinstate the budget commission." For his part, Mayor Briden disagrees. "I am only doing what I think is in the city's best interest," he told the Reporter. "I don't want to get involved in any politics of personnel. What's right is right," as he didn't want to comment much further. Rossi's husband is a retired police detective and former president of the police union.

City Council Meetings Back Live Streaming (computer)

Live streaming is the technical way of saying council meetings are on live TV. After former budget commission Chairman Michael O'Keefe questioned the need, relative to cost, the live sessions were dropped. Previously, city residents could watch live internet streaming of city council and school committee meetings on their computer. Mayor Briden, however, has pushed for the return of the live streaming of meetings. As pointed out in earlier Reporter stories, state law allows for fees from the city clerk's office to fund this item. Some on the budget commission still considered live streaming as not funded in the budget and not really needed. But the matter is resolved as the live streaming is back at an approximate annual cost of between $6,000 and $7,000. City Hall clerk's fees are estimated to more than cover the annual cost. In the recent past, council, school committee, zoning board and other special meetings were produced and aired for free by cable tv public access volunteers. Namely, George Donovan, Irwin Setzer and other residents produced the programs which were aired on a one day tape delay basis. Live programming was not a capability of the volunteers.

Former Superintendent Taras Herbowy Suspended in NY

Former East Providence Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Taras Herbowy - currently the Utica, NY Municipal Housing Authority Executive Director, has been suspended by that Board of Commissioners, with pay. Gino Geruntino, reporting for WIBX radio 950 AM in New York reported that the suspension took place in late April when the Board voted unanimously to take action. Last week, Herbowy was involved in an altercation with Chairman Dave Williams, resulting in harassment charges. A connection between the incident and the suspension has not yet been confirmed. An MHA Commissioner would not comment on the suspension or whether it was related to last week’s incident. They could only confirm that Herbowy was suspended with pay. Utica assessor David Williams filed a police charge against Herbowy claiming that Hebowy grabbed him in the arm "leaving a mark" during an argument at the housing authority office. The vote to suspend Herbowy was unanimous by the seven member board. Last July, Herbowy was involved in a similar incident. WIBX radio reported that Democratic challenger for the 22nd Congressional District, Dan Lamb, was confronted by Herbowy, head of the Utica Municipal Housing Authority. It happened during Lamb's planned stop at Peretta Twin Towers in Utica. Lamb was confronted by Herbowy and was heard telling the candidate that “I don’t like it and you better use your head in the future,” as he stood at the entrance to Peretta Twin Towers in Utica. Herbowy became agitated after learning that Lamb announced his visit to the media. He also blamed Councilman Frank Vescera, who’s taking Lamb on a listening tour of the city, for politicizing the event. Lamb made his visit to the area public, saying he’s stopping at Peretta Twin Towers and Kennedy Plaza Apartments, to hear concerns on Healthcare, Social Security and Medicare. Watch and hear the raw video of the incident at (http://wibx950.com/candidateconfronted-by-head-of-housing-authority). The Utica Observer-Dispatch also reported on this story. Herbowy's tenure in East Providence was tumultuous at times. He often clashed with various city officials including building inspector Al Quattrucci, former school board Chairman Tony Gouveia and former city manager Paul LeMont. In one celebrated incident, several sources have confirmed that Herbowy and LeMont had to be physically separated during an argument at a Warren Avenue restaurant.

EPHS Voke Principal is one of many wins for Attorney Tom McAndrew By Bob Rodericks

Charles Rocha, Jr.

In March of 2009, Charles “Chip” Rocha was sitting in his Career Center office at EPHS where he was the vocational school Principal. Then superintendent of schools, Dr. Mario Cirillo and schools Chief Operating Officer (COO) Lonnie Barham appeared and summoned Rocha to the school conference room. “The superintendent told me that I was being placed on administrative leave with pay. We believe you’ve been stealing money,” Rocha recalled Cirillo telling him. “I thought it wasn’t real. Are you kidding me?” he asked his bosses. Both Cirillo and Barham told Rocha that they had anonymous complaints against him. Rocha wasn’t allowed to enter his office and was told that the RI state police were on their way to the school. Within minutes the police arrived and after questioning him, escorted Rocha into his office to retrieve a coat. When asked if he had any school property at his home, Rocha replied that” yes I do, because our building (voke Charles Rocha, Jr. school) has unreliable security, and daily I bring small cartable items home for safe keeping. I had a camera and a laptop at home.” COO Barham and the police followed Rocha to his Warwick home where he gave them the items. The last thing Rocha said he heard from the school department COO was Barham telling him not to worry. “Don’t lose any sleep, we’ll have things cleaned up shortly.” However Rocha soon received a termination letter from the school department. Rocha’s next move was to call attorney Tom McAndrew. During his ‘leave’, Rocha said Cirillo Towing and Barham wanted a meeting with him. Rocha and McAndrew Foreign & Domestic showed up for the meeting and were met by an East Providence Free Estimates police officer. “Lonnie (Barham) said he heard I had a permit to GO GREEN carry a handgun and they wanted me frisked,” recalled Rocha. “I We handle all insurance claims WATER BASED do own a handgun and have a permit for it, “Go ahead, frisk him,” PAINT Complete auto collision repair McAndrew offered to the police officer. Shortly after that aborted meeting Rocha received a final termination letter. Cirillo and Barham were not finished. But the school leaders tried to prevent Rocha from receivFully Insured Lic #1317 FREE Estimates ing earned benefits. “They said I was no longer an employee of the city and therefore not eligible for standard retirement benefits,” said Rocha. Rocha filed an unfair labor complaint with the State Department of Labor and Training (DOL). Rocha, McAndrew, and various witnesses appeared at the DOL for a scheduled hearing. A city John J. The DOL ruled that the charges levied against Rocha were “without • Shingles merit” and also ordered the school department to pay a penalty of • All Types of Siding close to $2,000. teacher to ever have a Providence Journal editorial written about them and their students. This has been hard on my family,” said Rocha. Just when Rocha thought things were clearing up, the city struck again. In what many called an unprecedented action, the school administration filed a civil suit against Rocha. Cirillo and Barham, with support of a prior school committee, decided to sue Rocha personally, in Civil Court. The administration made several charges against Rocha to the state police. Among them were that Rocha kept $4,500 from the sale of an old car that was donated Programs Starting at $23.15 Per Session to the school; that he kept and didn’t deposit a check for $1,000 Full Day & Half Day Programs donated to the school, and that Rocha may have purchased a large Nursery School - Full Day Kindergarten screen TV at Sam’s Club that the school did not receive. Cirillo Ages: 3, 4, 5, 6 and Barham made other charges of improprieties against Rocha. Certified Faculty - Parent Partnership “Teachers were interviewed and told not to talk with me or they would be fired,” said Rocha. Teachers were interviewed by Cirillo and Barham with those interview narratives forwarded to the Court Ronnee Powers, and the state department of education. I never said some of Serving East Providence, Seekonk, Rehoboth & Pawtucket those things,” the teacher stated. In the end the state police report refuted the charges against Rocha. A police report dated April 19, 2011 stated in part that “on February 28, 2005, a $1,000 check was donated to the school...Detective investigation revealed that the check was deposited in the Voke Tech school checking account on March 23, 2005. A car donated to the school was sold for $4,500 cash. Investigation revealed that a bank receipt showed a cash deposit of $4,500 to the school account, one day after the sale.” The state police report also stated that purchases at Sam’s club were “nothing over the amount of $49.99 and no intent to defraud as required by the statute existed (due to check signatures).” On May 6, 2009, detectives advised Dr. Cirillo that they have “been unable to substantiate any of the allegations made against Rocha”. The investigation was closed. When the state police first told Cirillo and Barham that there was no case against Rocha, Barham stated that “well the police are wrong”. Barham was contacted for this article and declined to comment much. “I don’t think Rocha was cleared, the state police just said they don’t have enough evidence to prosecute,” claimed Cathy joined Sport and Spine Physical Therapy in Barham. my situation,” Rocha said. Rocha continued, “purchase of ‘expendable’ supplies is a by State mandate the City is responsibility for. But even after having informed the State of this impossible situation, no effort was made to rectify the situation, in fact, the superintendent at the time, Dr. J. Forbes informed me that, ‘I had to find a way to generate more income at the voke school to buy supplies’.” Will Rocha and McAndrew sue for slander or other damages? “No, this is not the fault of the citizens of E.P., I am born and raised a Townie…I love this City which gave my entire family a great life. This was the work of several ‘carpetbagger’ top administrators, and a politically motivated school committee set on purging the voke school of someone that actually cared about the education of E.P. kids…They ruined my career, my family name, and some of my friendships. It hurts deeply to see my life’s work be destroyed, through all of this my family has stood by me in strong support and believing that I was the victim of a ‘political ambush’…so much for supporting the ‘home-grown’ candidate…life goes on.”

Ali Khorasani

In one of McAndrew’s biggest cases against the city, former city Tax Assessor Ali Khorasani won a $580,000 bias claim. Khorasani claimed that he had been subjected to ethnic harassment and abuse. The complaint said that former city manager Paul Lemont and a former public works director “created a hostile work environment” and then retaliated against him when Khorasani complained to the state human rights commission in 1994. The city then fired Khorasani from an assistant city engineer’s post. The city pulled out of commission hearings after 19 days of testimony and opted to go to a Superior Court jury trial instead. They did no better. After some two weeks of testimony the jury awarded Khorasani damages approaching $647,000 in back pay, interest and attorney fees. Additional punitive charges were also looming as Judge Judith Savage asked the jury to return and deliberate on “further damages”. The then city council thought about appealing the ruling but was persuaded by then city attorney Anthony DeMarco to settle the matter. DeMarco cautioned that without a settlement, Khorasani may be granted even more compensation. DeMarco also felt that the city’s insurer may not cover “even half should we appeal”. The council approved the settlement. Then Mayor, Joseph Larisa, voted against the settlement, wanting to appeal in court. “I think there is a chance that we could be home free” with an appeal “but we’ll never know now,” Larisa stated to media outlets at the time. Former councilman Patrick Rogers also voted against the settlement, but for different reasons. Rogers said that the settlement deal was a “taxpayer-funded bailout for bad beahavior by LeMont and his public works director. Rogers called on LeMont to resign. Rogers did not receive any support to oust LeMont. “LeMont’s conduct was egregious and now taxpayers will have to pay,” said

Rogers. Larisa saw no reason to blame LeMont, saying instead that the Khorasani dispute was about job performance and not discrimination. “It’s a shame because it didn’t have to come to this,” added attorney McAndrew. “If Mr. Khorasani’s complaints had been taken seriously and corrective action taken, this would never have happened,” said McAndrew.

Albert Quattrucci Back

In a story first brought to light in March 2012 by The Reporter, it was disclosed that fired East Providence building inspector, Albert Quattrucci was about to win his wrongful firing case against the city. Quattrucci was fired by former city manager Richard Brown in 2009, for “egregious insubordinate behavior.” As The Reporter wrote in March, Quattrucci not only clashed with city hall management but also angered former school superintendent Dr. Mario Cirillo and his right hand man, chief operating officer, Lonnie Barham. Quattrucci was frustrated with school officials during the summer of 2009 over his health concerns with East Providence High School. Before school was to open, Quattrucci was considering an order to close the school. Quattrucci told area news reporters that the high school was “unsafe” and a “deathtrap”. During an inspection of the high school by the besieged building inspector, school officials called the East Providence Police who responded and removed Quattrucci from the school. “They told me to leave, the superintendent doesn’t want you on city property and I left,” said Quattrucci at that time. Former Superintendent Cirillo said that “while there are some issues with the school that are being addressed, Quattrucci’s claims are an exaggeration.” But Albert Quattrucci says he was fired because he ordered the closure of East Providence High School against the wishes of city and school department officials. Quattrucci had several disagreements with school and city officials as he received parental and some staff complaints about health related issues in several schools in the city. In the end, Richard Brown fired Quattrucci. In his letter firing Quattrucci, Brown wrote; “you have been informed (many times) by your immediate superior to first report to him any enforcement action against the school department. You ordered a stop-work memo to Martin Middle School and soon after sent an Immediate Closure Notice to the high school, without informing your superiors first...you are suspended without pay (July 21, 2009) and will be terminated on July 29, 2009 from city employment,” said Brown’s letter Quattrucci first upset school officials when he clashed with former school superintendents Taras Herbowy, Jackie Forbes and earlier - Dr. Patricia Daniel. Forbes, Daniel and Herbowy did not agree with several Quattrucci claims of perceived unsafe air quality and structural defects in many East Providence schools. School officials were upset that parents, teachers or other school staff would directly report complaints to Quattrucci without going through administrative channels. Sources tell how at one point, Quattrucci, after receiving an anonymous complaint of foul odors at an elementary school on his cell phone, called the fire department from his car to dispatch fire trucks to the school, without telling school officials. “I had no idea why fire trucks were appearing at my school,” said an elementary school principal. “Peolple were unnerved, no one called me.” Quattrucci’s style did not sit well with city and school management. Quattrucci was issued a “gag” order by former city manager Richard Brown who ordered him not to speak with area media. In the end, however, Quattrucci would appear at public meetings and speak out, often calling the press on his own. Quattrucci ordered EPHS closed in July of 2009 for alleged unsafe structures and conditions. It is believed that the city had this decision reversed. He was fired on July 30th. The Reporter reached Quattrucci at that time who would not publicly comment on the case. When told that some people watching this case closely believe that he had a strong chance of prevailing against the city,

May 2013 The Reporter Quattrucci would only chuckle, “we’ll see.” Quattrucci also called attorney McAndrew. Quattrucci appealed his firing to a city personnel hearing board that September of 2009. City officials continued to uphold former Manager Brown’s firing. “This wasn’t done with this city council and we are not directly involved with this case,” former Mayor Bruce Rogers told the Reporter. “I don’t have any official information yet but I hear that this arbitration may be going well for Mr. Quattrucci,” said Rogers at that time. Quattrucci said that he was terminated for “doing his job” and refusing to cover up School Department negligence, especially unsafe conditions at East Providence High School. Rogers’s forewarnings proved right, as Quattrucci has now prevailed. McAndrew also represented Quattrucci. “They (EP city officials) don’t seem to get it,” McAndrew mused when speaking about East Providence officials in cases he has worked on. Eventually Quattrucci and McAndrew were successful. The city was ordered to award Quattrucci back pay and other awards with interest, totaling almost $441,000. He was also reinstated to his old Building Inspector’s job. “Reinstating Mr. Quattrucci to his job, along with the back payment issues, is an amount that will be incalculable to the city. I don’t know how long he will opt to stay working for the city,” said McAndrew. There were also additional costs to the city. Former city manager Richard Brown was paid by the city for his testimony against Quattrucci. That fee was $10,000. The city also paid attorney Gina DiCenzo over $100,000 to represent management. The city also shared $20,000 in stenographic fees and $49,000 in arbitration fees. “An expensive case for the city that could have been avoided if the building official wasn’t interfered with,” added McAndrew.

Many Others

Tom McAndrew has represented several other parties against various East Providence city officials. He won them all. A former police chief and a high ranking police officer; a motorist in a police brutality case, a school business manager, school custodians and others, were all winning clients for Tom McAndrew. “I really tried to head off these cases. It isn’t fair to people for this to happen. The sad thing is that those responsible for these actions generally see no consequences for their actions. They disparage people and manufacture

allegations. Not fair,” reflected McAndrew. McAndrew is a veteran attorney with lots of experience in education and government law and politics. His late father-in-law was the respected former US congressman, John Fogarty. McAndrew and his family continue to assist people through the John E. Fogarty Foundation For Persons With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilties. McAndrew’s Turk’s Head Building office is adorned with pictures of former Presidents, Governors and Senators, etc. “Yes, I stay busy, especially in East Providence,” McAndrew said.

Lauren Zarembka Memorial Foundation Annual Fundraiser

The Lauren Zarembka Memorial Foundation Fundraiser will be held on Saturday May 25, 2013 at the Saint Brendan School Hall, 55 Turner Avenue East Providence RI from 6:30—11:00 PM. Donation: $20PP ($10 Children 5-10) Tickets Available at Schroders Deli, Willet Avenue, Riverside or by calling 438-4445, 433-4883, 253-3715 The foundation was founded in memory of Lauren Zarembka, a 2006 EPHS graduate who passed away September 23rd 2007 after a two and a half year battle with a brain tumor. Once again, “Your Heart Will Go On” marks the sixth year of the foundation’s single annual fundraiser. It has been through the generous support of the many local organizations, statewide businesses and individuals that have allowed the foundation to carry on Lauren’s memory and giving nature. To date the foundation has raised over $88,000.00, which has been used to provide $29,000.00 in scholarships as well as close to $7000.00 in donations to music/theater programs, which were one of Lauren’s true passions. Additionally the foundation has provided over $10,000.00 to adopt families battling pediatric cancer through the Tomorrow Fund at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. This brings to nine, the number of families helped during the past five holiday

May 2013 seasons. Through the generosity of those that have supported the foundation, the balance of funds continues to support what will lead to full endowment of the foundations mission. As with each year’s event we are in the process of seeking major sponsors to assist us in covering the associated costs of the event, thereby allowing one hundred percent of the proceeds to be utilized toward the foundations major goals.

Local High School Students Honored for TV ads on Preventing Sexual Violence PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 15, 2013) – Day One announced the winners of the eighth annual Your Voice. Your View media contest, which is focused on denouncing sexual violence among teens. East Providence High School received first prize in this year’s competition. EP High School Student Accepted On Board Arctic Climate Expedition

East Providence High School Senior, Alexandra Cordeiro has been accepted into an international youth experiential education program to the Arctic to learn about environmental issues and climate change. The expedition takes place July 14th – 28th and accepts less than 100 students from around the world every year. Lexie is on a mission to fundraise for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. “The program builds on the education and experience of individuals to help them lead in their respective fields as they go on into the world,” says Shirley Manh, Participant and Outreach Coordinator with Students on Ice. “Our expedition selects students and leaders from around the world each year for these expeditions – and we are thrilled to have Lexie on board with us. Her leadership and experience is a perfect match to the work that we do.” Manh states Lexie submitted a “very strong scholarship application and in fact was the runner up for the scholarship”. Having not been awarded the scholarship has not discouraged Lexie as she is actively seeking out sponsorship. Students on Ice is a unique initiative dedicated to taking students from around the world on unique learning expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. The ship-based International Polar Expedition employs modern icebreakers as home. It is the only organization in the world that offers an opportunity for students to be immersed in ‘hands on’ research activities and lectures, taught by polar experts, educators, and researchers. The expedition is a two-week journey in July. Lexie’s participation in the expedition depends on whether she can raise $10,000 in sponsorships. She is approaching local businesses, organizations, as well as individuals in the community to lend to the cause. “I am excited and inspired by the natural environment and think it is important for my generation to learn about sustainability and climate change,” explains Lexie. “I think that the hands-on learning of the expedition will teach me about world issues in a new and different way and I want to be able to share what I learn with other students at my school and in the community when I get back.” Lexie has lived in East Providence all her life and is a Senior at East Providence High School. She works at Skyzone in East Providence. She will be attending the University of New Haven in the fall majoring in Marine Biology. Anyone wishing to donate can make checks payable to “Students On Ice” and mail them to East Providence high school.

The competition was held on April 11, 2013 at Bishop Hendricken. “Our kids performance at the meet was particularly impressive since the squad, depleted by illness, still managed to finish only four points out of second place and the runner’s up plaque,” said coach Lyons. Among the Townies placing at the meet were; the High Jump Relay consisting of Jashaun Bennett, Justin Pelletier, Chris Moura and Justin Andrade who finished in first place. It should be noted that Jashaun Bennett was also the top individual high jumper at the meet. The 4x100 Meter Relay consisting of Chris Moura, Josh Rambert, Trystan Casey and Ryan Williams who finished in second place. The 4x200 Meter Relay consisting of Justin Pelletier, Jayden Chase, Trystan Casey and Ryan Williams who finished in second place. The 4x800 Meter Relay consisting of Charlie Walker, Jay Andrade, Alex Gorman and Dan Castillo who finished in fifth place. The 4x400 Meter Relay consisting of Charlie Walker, Jay Andrade, Chris Moura and Josh Rambert who finished in third place. It should be noted while anchoring the 4x400 Meter Relay, Josh Rambert ran the fastest 400 Meter time run in the state of Rhode Island this season. The Triple Jump team consisting of Chris Moura, Trystan Casey, Dan Castillo and Justin Pelletier finished fifth. It should be noted that Trystan Casey recorded the top Triple Jump measured during the competition. The Javelin Relay team consisting of Trystan Casey, Jacob Almeida, Jacob Martin and Demetrius Fennell who finished in sixth place.

A concert for students from kindergarten through grade five will take place at the Kent Height School on Pawtucket Avenue in East Providence on the morning of Friday, May 10, 2013. The musical ensemble Make We Music has made many school appearances in Rhode Island and Massachusetts this spring. Their presentation, sponsored by Alan Shawn Feinstein, introduces ancient instruments from the recorder and crumhorn families, delivers a message about the kind treatment of animals, and encourages students to be helpful and respectful to each other. Song titles for the children include “Have you ever seen a red fox?,” “There is a place called Winslow Animal Rescue Farm,” and “Join the people helping people.” A longer program with the same themes is entitled “Eyes That Speak.” Animal shelters and other organizations seeking to raise funds have sponsored this presentation. Jacqueline Devillers, the musical director of the ensemble, has said, “With two dozen presentations to young children this spring we think we are helping to make a difference for animals both now and in the future. We are grateful to Mr. Feinstein for his generous support.” Contact Jacqueline Devillers at Devillers91@yahoo.com

Waddington School's 3rd Annual Fun and Food Event

Dear Friends, As I sit here and reflect on Waddington’s 3rd Annual Family Fun and Food Event (Pasta Dinner) only two words continue to come to my mind...COMMUNITY and WOW! I am so impressed with the dedication and commitment that this committee showed to put on an event of this magnitude. I have heard so many positive comments over the past two days, that I am so overwhelmed. To the Teachers: I thank you. I thank you for the continued support and time commitment that you put into helping with the night and the days leading up to the event. To the ones who volunteered their Friday night to sell tickets, served food, clean up, get arrested, or just supported the event by being there. I thank you! To the Riverside Middle School: Thank you for allowing us to take over your building. Thank you, Mr. Prew for allowing me to bring in my brigades. To the wonderful kitchen staff, I thank you. You once again when above and beyond for us. To the custodians, thank you for helping us get through the night and dealing with any of our extra messes that may have come up. To the Parent Volunteers: I thank you. So many of you stepped up to help secure donation, raffles, auction items and food. I am not sure how many of you really knew what you were getting into when you signed up, but this event would have not been a success without you. I have made such good friends through working hand and hand with all of you. You are an amazing bunch of hard workers. To the members of the School Committee and City Council: I thank you! I thank you for showing your support to the Waddington Elementary School & the Waddington PTA by attending our event. For the members that were “arrested” I can honestly say I have never seen so many generous “inmates” in my life. Thank you for being part of our jail. To the Bakers & Buyers: What can I say, thank you! Thank you for the many many cakes and desserts that were brought in to help, not only with our “cake walk” but also with our dessert table. The cakes were beautiful. The Waddington Community you have baking talent. To Superintendent Mercer and Interim Superintendent DeGoes: I thank you! Thank you for showing your support for Waddington Elementary school, by taking time out of your busy and hectic schedules to spend your Friday evening with us. It has been a pleasure to work with you Dr. DeGoes; you truly are a class act. Superintendent Mercer, I look forward to working with you on future endeavors to help support the East Providence Schools. To the Waddington PTA & Board Members; I thank you. I thank you for believing in me and allowing me to chair this committee for the past three years. It has been such a pleasure to work with all of you. I know at times I may seem a little unorganized and “crazy” (ok a lot crazy), but you always have my back. All you of know, that when I put my heart and soul into something that I so strongly believe in that I will always follow through. This event I SO believe in. This event is not only a fundraiser, but it had become a community event. To Mrs. Barlow: I thank you. I thank you for the trust that you have instilled in me to represent your school and the belief that I can accomplish the goals that are set forth. As busy as you are, you always had time for me when questions or concerns arose during the planning of this event. To the Many Businesses and Monetary Donors: Words can’t explain the thanks that I send to you. Without you our event would not have gone on. We depend solely on donations to put this event together. We had all of our food, drinks and supplies donated by local restaurants, bakeries and supply companies. We had over 200 penny social items donated. Our volunteers were able to continued on next page...

secure over hundreds of silent auction and raffle items. Thank you! We have some very generous business in the area! To the Entertainers: I thank you. Thank you for your musical performances, your unbelievable talent, your wonderful ability to entertain a huge diverse audience and your patience with the many children that required your attention. To all the Waddington Wizards and their Families: I thank you! Thank you for spending your Friday evening with us. For bringing your family and friends with you. This event is a sure sign of Townie Pride. It was so nice to see everyone having a wonderful time and enjoying an entertaining evening. Thank you for the many raffle tickets that were sold. I was so impressed with the amount of money raised in the 50/50 raffle. Thank you to the Waddington Safety Patrol Officers for coming to keep our event safe and clean. To my Friends & Family, I love you! You have stood by my side from day one. There are no words to express how thankful I am to have all of you in my life. To my friends who volunteered their time and energy to work with me on this event, I thank you. To my parents and husband that had to deal with the hundreds of raffle items that scoured my floors for weeks, I thank you for your understanding. To understand the hours and time that I put into this event can sometimes be very difficult to the ones closest to me. I just want my family to know that, I love them and helping this school with this event means so much to me. To Matthew & Sydney, I love you! I do this for you! It may take time to understand why, but there will be a day that you will understand why your mom wants you to have the best and equal education that I can give you. Sometimes people need to come together to help raise funds, so that we can get the supplies/items that are needed to help make you better students and lifelong learners. To the Community: What started out three years ago in a small hall with no gas for cooking and where the attendance was less than 350, to this year’s event where we are looking at numbers over 700 people and an estimated guess close to raising over $13,500 (silent auction money is still coming in) I would say we have achieved a goal. When you believe you can achieve. Thank you to everyone who made this event one for the record books. You have my sincere gratitude. Sincerely, Jessica Beauchaine Waddington PTA Pasta Dinner Chairperson

Dear Pasta Dinner Volunteers,

I too would like to thank everyone that is mentioned in this well written expression of gratitude. The success of the Pasta Dinner is testament to fact that Townie Pride is real and can be seen when the residents of East Providence gather together with a common purpose and work for the greater good. You all exhibited genuine hospitality and created an atmosphere of fun and excitement for everyone that came. I am so impressed by how many individuals from throughout district helped AM Waddington School get the technology we need to enhance the learning of our students and give them a taste of what a twenty first century education is like. The only person not mentioned here that deserves the utmost recognition and praise is Jessica Beauchaine. Once again, her enthusiasm and organizational skills brought forth amazing results! It is people like her that prove to us all that one person truly can make a difference, even when the work is insurmountable and the goal seems impossible to achieve. The entire school community showed our students that they are loved and cared for by the people around them and there is no greater gift that you could ever give them. You taught them that if they have the faith to believe and the courage to step forward to do the work, as you all repeatedly have, they too can improve the world in which they live. Even more significant than the financial contributions raised is this important message. For me, the evening was a reminder of how blessed I am to be your principal and a part of the Riverside community. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for giving so generously to our school. Sincerely, Mrs. Barlow

~ Martin Middle School ~ Can’t Hide that Wildcat Pride

The early spring has been mighty busy at Martin Middle School as events and opportunities have been in abundance. During the month of March, we celebrated with our biggest fundraiser of the year, our Spring Fair. The Fair offered games, entertainment, and enjoyment for all ages as students, their families, and staff members were able to help support our school and its programs while having a great time. The Spring Fair would not be possible without the leadership and hard work of our P.T.O. members. Once again I’m very proud to say that students, families and staff came through with our annual drive for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as our school was able to raise $700. It is great to see our students help fellow students in need. Great effort to everyone that contributed!

The Guidance Department at Martin Middle School held their annual Career Day for all eighth grade students on Tuesday, March 26, 2013. The students were given the opportunity to interact with people from different careers and to understand what qualifications and education are needed to be in that particular profession. Students were able to ask questions about the speaker’s career as well as to look at different props from their jobs. We hope the students left knowing that with education, hard work, and determination they will be able to be successful in whatever career they wish to pursue. Guest Speakers included members from our E.P. Fire Department, a Hair Stylist, a Photographer, and representatives from Textron Corporation, Hasbro Products. Congratulations needs to go to both Martin Band and Choral Programs as each group attained ‘Superior’ rankings at their recent R.I. Music Educators Association Festival. Both groups will be conducting Spring Concerts with the Band performing on Wednesday, May 8th and the Chorus performing on Wednesday, May 15th. Both performances will begin at 7 p.m. On behalf of those students playing Baseball & Softball this spring at Martin, we like to thank both local groups, Project 106 and E.P. Middle School Boosters Club for their determination to return interscholastic sports to the middle schools here in East Providence. Both teams are grateful for your efforts and we look forward to more sports being re-instated in the future. In the meantime, other activities will continue to be offered to our students. We recently completed a school wide Dodgeball Tournament that saw 18 teams with over 180 participants competing for the school crown of Dodgeball Supremacy. In the championship, the eighth grade led “Cancer Crushers” defeated the 6th grade laden “Millionaires’! We will be starting our 3rd season of intramurals on April 29th offering Co-ed Soccer, Boy’s Basketball, Indoor Floor Hockey, Girl’s Basketball, and Tennis Racket Baseball. Finally a big Thank you to students, staff, and maintenance crew for their help during Earth Week in restoring beauty to our school’s courtyard, after the damage from storm ‘Sandy’ that took down several trees and large branches.

Bay View Academy Advanced Theater Class Brings Original Script To Rhode Island State Drama Festival Bay View Student Wins Fifth Straight Acting Award

Emily Petrie

Photo Credits: Lori DesVergnes; Drama Fest Cast and Choir 2013 East Providence, RI – This year, Bay View Academy’s Advanced Theater Class and their director, Christine D. Kavanagh (Barrington, RI), faced the challenge not just to put on a play, but to do justice to the real life struggles, both the wins and losses, with an original script about the battle of cancer. The subject, cancer, came about naturally but the idea of writing an original script wasn’t something that Bay View’s 30 year veteran theater teacher, Christine D. Kavanagh, ever had in mind. “The kids have been hounding me for years to write a play,” said Chris. “I always said, ‘I’m not Beckett; writing a play is hard!” But that changed this year when singer and songwriter, Joanne Lurgio, asked the Bay View Academy chamber choir to join her in the recording of her song, “Won’t Ever Quit” for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Suddenly, the subject of cancer was on the table and it seemed, all around. A Bay View student in sixth grade was going through treatment, a Bay View staff member was diagnosed, a staff member’s grandson passed away, a Bay View alumna was fighting for her life, Chris herself had survived Stage 4 cancer and many of the students had experiences with cancer in their own families. The subject, it seemed, was all but hitting them over the head. And so collaboration began between Chris and her students; reading, researching and writing an original script titled An Unfinished Symphony to be performed at the Rhode Island State Drama Festival. The play consisted of monologues that told of the real life stories of those in the fight against cancer, those who have survived, those who haven’t, and the stories of those left behind. It ends on an upbeat and optimistic note with the cast and chamber chorus singing Lurgio’s Won’t Ever Quit. Woven throughout the performance is video of Bay View alumna, Alison Pochebit, (Class of 2003), who is currently fighting acute lymphoblastic leukemia and who came to speak to the Advanced Theater class to help them glean a deeper understanding of the subject. The students performed their work at the Rhode Island State Drama Festival on March 23rd and were rewarded with a standing ovation and many individual awards, including one to senior Maggie Dunleavy (Cranston, RI), her fifth award in a row at the Drama Festival. Every year since eighth grade at Bay View, Maggie has continued on next page...

If you love history and baseball, this is the night for you! Yellowstone: Land of Wonders or A Stranger in a Strange Land Sunday, May 19, 2013 1:30pm

In 1883 Belgian writer Jules Leclercq spent ten days on horseback in Yellowstone, the world’s first national park, exploring its astonishing geysers, majestic waterfalls, the vast lake, and the breathtaking canyon. Along with his observations on the park’s natural wonders, Leclercq describes camping near geysers, washing clothes in a bubbling hot spring, and meeting guides and tourists. A sensation in Europe, his book, Yellowstone, Land of Wonders: Promenade in North America’s National Park was never published in English until now. Translators Suzanne Cane and Janet Chapple will discuss Leclercq’s book and show slides of its beautiful 19th century engravings as well as images of Yellowstone today. If you are thinking about travel to a National Park this summer, this program is a must! Books will be available for purchase from Books on the Square.

Raimondo Kicks Off Financial Empowerment Library Tour

Cumberland, Warwick and East Providence Libraries to host free financial learning opportunities

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo today, as part of Financial Literacy Month, announced the start of a financial empowerment library tour. Each stop of the tour is designed to highlight a different component of personal financial management, including understanding your credit score, managing your debt and developing a budget. “My office is always looking for innovative ways to help Rhode Islanders become financially empowered,” Raimondo said. “This program brings free financial education directly to our neighborhoods through local libraries. By providing a place for people to safely learn about their finances, I believe we can move our state forward one person at a time. ” Volunteers and staff from the Capital Good Fund, a nonprofit that provides personal financial coaching and innovative microloans, will present at these events. The organization is Treasury’s partner for the Rhode Island Financial Coaching Corps, a program of Treasury’s Empower RI initiative. The goal of the Corps is to match volunteers with financial skills and know-how with Rhode Islanders looking to learn how to make their money work for them. Their mission is to empower Rhode Islanders to take charge of their finances. “Corps members are trained volunteers – active and retired financial planners, accountants and bankers – who donate their time by working with Rhode Islanders to improve their financial situation,” said Andy Posner, Executive Director of the Capital Good Fund. “We are pleased to bring our innovative financial education model to local libraries.”

Next visit Brides.com, the online website for Brides magazine, which has a plethora of informational articles as well as info on the latest bridal trends. From tips on choosing the right dress to a beauty calendar checklist for up to 12 months before the big day, it's a fantastic resource for staying organized. For the do-it-herself bride, Pinterest.com is a great resource for finding unique decor and ideas to make your wedding completely "you." When you're feeling stumped about some aspect of planning, Theknot.com is sure to inspire. Start by learning your personal wedding style - are you modern, vintage or offbeat? Then jump into learning about color schemes, fashion, honeymoons and more. MyWedding.com is a helpful resource also, with a variety of planning tools, insightful guides and the opportunity for couples to create a free website about their wedding. Want to know some of the top bridal trends of 2013? From color to cake, brides today are thinking outside the box. Here are some top trends to consider: Color: When it comes to colors there's no need to be coy - top trends of 2013 are bright and bold. From ruby reds, rich blues, vivid violets and sunshine yellows, splashes of color liven up your decor and create a memorable atmosphere. It's easy to seamlessly incorporate a fun color without going over the top when you rent - consider renting runners, centerpieces and even stemware in the color of your choice. Dessert: While traditional brides may prefer a multilayered wedding cake, many others are taking a fun approach to desserts. Do you and your honey love apple pie? Place homemade apple pies on each table. Have your first date at an ice cream parlor? Set up an ice cream bar with a variety of toppings for guests to create their own sundae. You can rent all the extras to create an authentic ice cream shop atmosphere.

Melissa Marie Hair Designs 912 Broadway Unit 2 East Providence RI • 401-714-0722 Go virtual: It's unlikely that every guest you invite will be able to attend, so now technology is bringing people closer together no matter where they reside. Couples with guests who live far away or family who aren't able to attend are now sharing their special day by live-streaming the ceremony and reception. Guests can then attend the wedding virtually. Bouquets: Flowers are beautiful, but creative brides are taking a fresh look at traditional bouquets. Adorn your blooms with gems or feathers for a stunning accent as you walk down the aisle. Or, skip flowers altogether and create a family heirloom - gather vintage brooches from friends and family and make a sparkling jewelry bouquet with supplies from your local craft store. Whatever trends you decide to incorporate into your big day, renting your dream wedding supplies rather than buying is a wise decision. You'll get the latest trends at an affordable price.

HUNGRY? Dining Guide The Reporter May 2013

find it in the... Play With Your Food By Angela Hall

Hello, I’m Angela Hall and welcome to “Play With Your Food”… because cooking should be fun! Lovely May and soon spring flowers will all be in bloom. Garden planning. Farmers Markets are teeming with veggies and fruits. One of my favorite fruits from this time of year are Strawberries. I use them in salads instead of tomatoes. Wild Strawberries will be out soon too. Beautiful delicate wild strawberries. When I was growing up my poor mother was very allergic to strawberries. She couldn’t even tolerate the smell. We never had strawberry anything. This was one of those allergies that developed in her adult years. I remember as a small child my mother got very sick, she couldn’t get out of bed and a doctor came to the house to examiner her. As it turned out it was strawberries that caused her to become so sick. Food allergies are serious business. They can kill a person if not attended to. If you suspect this might be happening get it checked out. Allergies can develop at any age and can affect a person in various ways. In Massachusetts food service workers are required to take allergy awareness training. I believe this should be a requirement of all states. In any event, for me the joy of strawberries was discovered as an adult. So glad my son or myself don’t have that type of allergy. ...Continued at www.Reporter Today.com

Living Well RI Program

Six (6) week session ; Chronic Illness Self-Management Education Class Sessions will be for those with chronic conditions, and/or their caregivers. To date, the LWRI self-management education programs have proven to significantly help those with chronic conditions. Some of the topics that are covered are how to exercise and eat properly, how to use medications appropriately, how to solve everyday problems, and how to communicate effectively with family members and healthcare providers-all positive life skills to enhance one’s well-being. The outcome for the participants could be a reduction in pain, management of depression, control of fear and frustration, and a boost in self-confidence to manage their condition. Although it would be of benefit to be involved in class discussions, it is important to note that class participants are not obligated to discuss personal issues or to exert themselves in any way. It is entirely up to the participants as to how involved they wish to be with class participation, contributing ideas, sharing personal stories, and providing input within the classes. It has been found that by attending the classes, even those who wouldn’t normally discuss certain issues, may do so if their peers are doing so. Participants will receive “goodies” such as the book, relaxation CD, and especially the gift card has proven to be a popular incentive. We hope to begin the class in June, please sign up in the Administration Office.

Managing Concerns About Falls

Have you turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so, A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a program for you. Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends. A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent. A Matter of Balance is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance. East Bay Retired Senior Volunteer Program is offering A Matter of Balance Training: Managing concerns About Falls on: Mondays and Wednesdays 9:00 AM -11:00 AM at the East Providence Senior Center on. June 3rd, 5th, 10th, 12th,17th,19th 24th and 26th . Please call East Bay RSVP at 401-4357876 to register or for more information.

Summer Fun Guide Fun Tips For Fantastic Family Vacations

(BPT) - Family vacations are always a great time for family bonding and exploring new places. With some careful planning, the trip can be packed full of fun from the minute you lock the front door to the minute you arrive back home, exhausted and ready to share stories of your adventures with friends and family. Traveling with children does require careful planning, but taking a little extra time to plan ahead will make your time spent together that much more rewarding. Take these ideas into consideration as you organize your family trip. * Traveling organization - If you’re on a road trip this spring or summer, keeping track of all the snacks, games and travel necessities isn’t easy. Put a few household items to use, and you’ll be able to keep everything where it belongs, instead of having it rolling around under the seats. For example, a shoe organizer hung over the back of the front seats helps to keep all children’s toys and activities within reach. And a divided cardboard drink container is an excellent storage kit for needed items like snacks, tissues, hand wipes, etc. For airline travels, the mantra “less is more” comes into play. Have each child pack one carry-on, such as a metal lunchbox or a backpack, with all their traveling necessities. Crayons and coloring books, as well as small game books like crossword puzzles or word searches are recommended. * Create “snacktivities” - Package the snacks you’ll be eating on-the-go with activities to keep the kids busy. For example, a new coloring book with a juice box and a snack will help everyone forget they’re on a long trip. Pack satisfying snacks such as Lance Xtra Fulls Toasty and ToastChee sandwich crackers, which are made with real peanut butter and deliver up to 6 grams of protein per serving. continued on next page...

Start Making those Summer Plans! Star Bites. Or give the kids paper plates, sandwich crackers, cheese and fruit make their own “snack creations” in the shapes of animals. Visit www.lance.com for additional snack recipes and snacking ideas. * Play together - When in doubt good old-fashioned car games such as “I Spy” can provide hours of entertainment for the entire family. While in the car ask kids to look at billboards, road signs, license plates and buildings to find the letters of the alphabet in order. For instance, to find an “A” the child might see Applebee’s and say it aloud, then move on to finding the letter B. You can also play counting games with younger children. Count blue vans, find 10 horses, count rest stops or water towers. How many people pass you on the highway? Count those, too. There are endless possibilities. Family vacations are a lot of fun, and if your trip is well-planned, everyone can return home with great memories and stories to share.

How You Can Help NALC Food Drive for TAPIN

TAPIN (Touch A Person In Need) would like to remind everyone that the NALC Food Drive will be Saturday, May 11 and it is a hugely important contribution to the emergency food closet. With the number of east bay area clients increasing every day it is very difficult to replenish the shelves. Please have your bag of non-perishable food items in unbreakable containers out early for your letter carriers who make this tremendous effort each year. Canned goods such as vegetables, soups, spaghetti sauce, tuna, fruits as well as peanut butter, pasta, cereals, etc. are needed most since they go in every bag, but condiments, dry milk, snacks, crackers and baking items are really nice additions to those basic bags. If donors miss the drive on Sat. they can still deliver their donations to TAPIN and the NALC will receive credit. The agency also has a pool of volunteer drivers who give rides to clients for medical appointments. There is always a need for more of these special volunteers. Drivers are free to drive only as often and as far as they wish and many nice relationships have resulted over the years between clients and volunteers. Please call the office during regular hours for further information about this rewarding opportunity. The agency is open from 9 to noon, Monday thru Friday, and is located in the lower level of the Library building. Please call 247-1444 for more information.
