Czech Republic Food and Drink Report Q4 2011 Published on August 2011
Report Summary The Czech consumer remains relatively weak, with high unemployment relative to the pre-downturn era contributing strongly to ongoing discretion. Retail sales remain quite flaky and austere measures imposed by the government are likely to weigh on household spending through 2011. The return of premiumisation as a key industry driver in Czech Republic remains some way off, in our opinion. As such, lower spend segments within the food and drink industry remain better positioned relative to premium reliant areas. Headline Industry Data (local currency) - 2011 per capita food consumption = 3.15% forecast compound annual growth to 2015= 3.40% - 2011 beer volume sales = 0.05%; forecast compound annual growth to 2015= 0.2% - 2011 mass grocery retail sales = 6.38%; forecast compound annual growth to 2015= 9.50% Key Company Trends Downturn Continuing To Hit Beer, Exports Doing Much Better ' Although the Czech Republic can lay claim to being the biggest beer drinking nation in the world in terms of per capita consumption (more than 150 litres per year), that has not stopped people from scaling back their beer drinking over the past few years. Already quite mature, the industry has had to face a host of challenges over the past few years. The sharp 2009 recession and flaky consumer confidence thereafter has certainly been a major issue for beer, especially as the likes of SABMiller's Plzensky Prazdroj rely on on-trade sales for about half of their turnover in the Czech Republic. Czech Republic's biggest beer companies are generally doing a lot better with their exports than they are at home. For example, while Budejovicky Budvar reported a 24% year-on-year (y-o-y) increase in net income to about US$10.4mn for the year to December 2010, the bulk of this growth was delivered through cost cutting and growing the share of exports to overall sales (Czech beer is very popular internationally, especially in Germany). Budvar's sales in 2010 were down 5% y-o-y. Exports accounted for 48.4% of 125mn litres of beer Budvar produced in 2010. Key Risks To Outlook Imported Inflation ' Imported inflation has been a major issue in 2011. High food and energy prices have had a detrimental impact on consumer spending. High food prices in particular are unlikely to go away anytime soon either. Rising instability in the eurozone ' Growing instability across the eurozone could dampen Czech consumer demand owing to the country's high trade integration with the eurozone.
