U.S. Markets for Interventional Cardiology Products Published on May 2014
Report Summary Every 34 seconds someone in the U.S. will suffer a coronary event, and every 83 seconds someone will die from such an event. In the next decade, the number of people living in the U.S. who have heart conditions is expected to continue to increase along with expansion in the elderly segment of the population and growth in the number of people with chronic disorders such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity. Currently, 15.4 million adults age 20 or older in the U.S. suffer from coronary heart disease (CHD), which is the single largest cause of death in the U.S. and also is the greatest cause of premature and permanent disability in the labor force; CHD is responsible for more than 50% of all cardiovascular events in men and women younger than age 75, and for 1 out of every 6 deaths. Interventional cardiology is a continually evolving area of medicine that involves the use of catheter-based, or transcatheter, tools and techniques to diagnose and treat coronary vascular and structural disorders. Today, interventional techniques, which came into widespread use in the mid-1980s, are a mainstay for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with CHD. In 2013, diagnostic and therapeutic interventional cardiology methods were employed in approximately 5.5 million procedures in the U.S., generating approximately $3.8 billion in corresponding products sales; it is expected that, in the year 2018, these methods will be employed in nearly 5.7 million procedures in the U.S., generating an estimated $4.3 billion in corresponding product sales. This dynamic, new report from Medtech Insight includes analyses of products, current and emerging markets, competitors, and opportunities for suppliers of interventional cardiology devices to the U.S. Covered topics in this report include atherectomy, cardiovascular disease statistics, coronary angiography, coronary stenting, drug-eluting balloon angioplasty, guidewire-based physiologic intravascular stenosis assessment, intracardiac echocardiography, intravascular ultrasound, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, thrombectomy, transcatheter septal defect repair, and vascular access site closure, among others.
