Summary ď ś Intermittent catheters are used for emptying the urinary bladder in patients who lose control over their bladder. These catheters are used for short term. Urine incontinence can be caused due to neurogenic bladder disorders such as spinal cord injury, spina bifida or multiple sclerosis, and non-neurogenic bladder disorders. The catheter is inserted into the urethra and guided to the bladder causing the urine to flow through the catheter tube and drain into the collection bag. Once the bladder is emptied, the catheter can be removed. Self- catheterization is also possible with these catheters; even children of seven or eight years can be trained to handle catheterization on their own. A parent or caregiver can help in case a patient is physically ill.
