www.hansville.org  A MESSAGE FROM THE NEW PRESIDENT By Chuck Strahm

H

opefully you’ve all had wonderful holidays and are as excited about the New Year as I am. When I first met with the Greater Hansville Community Center Board, I never expected to get this involved; I just wanted to start a new event that would be fun for kids of all ages, the Hansville Coaster Games. But I quickly found out that the Community Center is a great place to have fun and make new friends. The Community Center started a few new projects in 2013 that are really good. One of those is the new Endowment fund that should help secure the Community Center’s future for years and years to come. Your support is greatly appreciated; we have met our initial goal and will continue to build on that success. Also, our reformatted St. Patrick’s Day dinner, and the Halloween party were both a stitch, and a good time was had by all the kids that attended no matter if they were 4 years old or 80. We also adopted a new Mission Statement that simply states what all of us involved at GHCC feel; we are “Dedicated to Enriching Life in The Greater Hansville Area Communities”. It’s just a simple concept that took forever to boil down to what we on the Board really feel our mission is. I don’t think that 2014 will bring many big changes, we will continue to host events that should be fun for all ages, we will continue to try and provide opportunities that enrich our lives, and we will most of all continue to be a place for all of our friends and neighbors to gather and have a little fun. On the evening of January 27, 2014 there will be an opportunity to come meet your new Board members. GHCC will host a “Soup Night” at 6:30 pm where we can all meet and get to know each other, share our ideas and enjoy a little supper. It’s completely informal and there’s no charge, it’s just the Board of the Greater Hansville Community Center’s way of saying thank you for your support, and a way to invite you to come join us!

Happy New Year!

SOCIAL HOUR / LENDING LIBRARY The monthly Social Hour / Lending Library at the Greater Hansville Community Center is scheduled for Thursday, January 16, 2014. Hosting each month will be at least one member of the Board. Here’s your chance to have a conversation with them about anything happening at the Center. We always have sweet snacks provided by our many volunteers for visitors to enjoy with a cup of coffee or tea. Bring your laptop and check out our new addition. We have WI-FI at the Community Center! We’d like to hear from you. Would a computer class be of interest? How about a speaker on the third Thursday? Would a demonstration of a craft or gardening be of interest? The options are endless! Let us know what appeals to you. This is a time set aside at the Center each month. The Lending Library is full of books for the taking. Enjoy them for a month and return them the following month. No limit. No check out. No check in. It’s easy and yours to enjoy. Pop in for a few minutes or spend the day with us! We look forward to your company. January 27 | 6:30pm | By Chuck Strahm

Their children, plus a host of neighbors, have planted, weeded, harvested, packed and shipped lily bulbs all across North America since 1978. All of our bulbs are grown here in the Pacific Northwest, where hybridizing of the modern garden lily began. In this program, Dianna and Bob will share their love and knowledge of lilies and provide tips on how to successfully grow them in our Northwest home gardens. HANSVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

he Hansville Historical Society meets the third Friday of the month at the Greater Hansville Community Center. We are always looking for more information on how Hansville became the wonderful community it is today. Several of our members are from families who settled here early but some of us are simply interested in the history. We would love for you to join us (for one day or become a member). If you would like to be interviewed about your family’s part in making history of Hansville, please contact Tom Lee 638-1973. Our newly elected officers are: Red Denson, president; Lois Lee, Group Leader; Sara Smith and Judy Roupe, Co-Secretaries, Patty Endresen, Treasurer, Duane Sabin, Hospitality Chair.

Early December’s chilly temperatures in the 20’s with bright sunny days may be a distant memory right now but I can remember the crunchy leaves I walked on and the stillness of vegetation in the Greenway. I was shivering so much even when I was bundled up and never thought about what was happening inside of the shrubs and bushes. The stems and leaves changed color or shriveled up. When the temperatures started to warm up I took a couple of long walks to notice what I notice. It was delightful to see small clumps of ice in the center of ferns and large areas of ice on Buck Lake and both Upper and Lower Hawk’s pond. Do take a quiet walk in winter and notice what you notice… it can be an invigorating experience.

January 27 | 10:00 am - noon | By Chuck Strahm

The December meeting has set projects for 2014 and of course the invitation to become a steward is still a top priority. Make it a resolution that you can join others in walking in the Greenway at least twice a month and e-mail a simple report of your walk. Go to http://hansvillegreenway.org for information

GHCC Pinewood Derby

& Workshop

t’s that time of year to move our events indoors where it’s nice and warm and dry. We’re already planning our annual Pinewood Derby and workshop. The workshop is scheduled for January 27, 2014 from 10:00 am to Noon. The Pinewood Derby is scheduled for February 8, 2014 at 2:00 pm. We have PWD car kits available for $5.00 per kit. The kits include the wood blocks, axles, and wheels. Contact Chuck “Captain Coaster” Strahm to get a kit at 638-2882 or at hansvillecoasters@gmail.com This year’s derby will not have an entry fee for children up to age 16. Racers age 17 and above will be asked for a $5.00 entry fee for their first entry, and then $1.00 for each additional entry. The pinewood derby is great fun for all ages and we will have the same age bracket classes so the young beginners are not racing against the more experienced older racers. And the ever popular “Bling” class will be back for those racers with a penchant for decorating. Hope we see you there.

Feliz ano Nuevo! Godt NyAr! Bonne Annee! Hauoli makahiki hou! Greetings for the new year in Spanish, Danish, French and Hawaiian. I read on the internet that some state and national parks celebrate New Year’s Day with a ranger led walk in the park. On one of these walks the ranger encouraged everyone to hug a tree and then to walk a trail every day for a week. I encourage you to think of a new ‘green walk’ tradition that suits you and see if the quality of your life changes. There is a comic strip called ‘Rose is Rose’ done by Don Wimmer and formerly done by another cartoonist, Pat Brady. Rose has a ‘leaning’ tree that she leans against and calls it her ‘let it be’ tree. When Rose has a heavy burden, she goes to her tree. I found my tree on December 10th near the shore of Buck Lake but I must confess that I have communicated with a lot of other trees in the past. And rocks, too. Celebrate the new year ahead and celebrate your life and your loves. Notice what you notice on a winter’s walk in the Greenway. Dress warmly and hold hands with someone dear to you.

Eglon News

n December we had two amazing holiday events in Eglon and I am so thankful for living in a community where so many residents jump right in to help out with whatever needs to be done. Our traditional holiday sale was a huge success and there are some key people we’d like to thank. Each year Bonnie Bryant Hedman takes charge in organizing the vendors and proceeds to decorate the Schoolhouse with great holiday style. She is assisted by Dana Dukes who heads up the Bake Sale and keeps the coffee hot. Her helpers this year were Sherry Cordiner and her sister and they sold every last baked good item we had! For sure we always want our unnamed bakers to know how much their contributions are appreciated. Diana Allen must be thanked for all the cinnamon rolls that were ready that morning to be baked hot in the Schoolhouse. Cathy Gomes did a wonderful job putting together the two raffle baskets and providing the hot chili with fixings. Without all of the vendors our holiday sale would certainly be lacking, so we thank each of them for continuing to come each year. All of these wonderful people are true Eglon Gems and it is precious to watch them as they share their happy holiday spirit, which becomes quite infectious. The Eglon Christmas Program was extremely touching this year. The children of Eglon performed an endearing play, “The Elves and the Eglon Shoemaker”to a packed Schoolhouse. Individual young residents also stepped up with instrumental numbers and we had one dad who even got us laughing over Christmas jokes. Five of our residents collaborated with saxophones, a guitar and accordians to lead us in traditional Christmas Carols. Santa rounded out our evening with a surprise visit and presents for all the little ones. With both of these events my pride in the Eglon community is uncontainable and I do so appreciate that my home is here in Eglon. The next Eglon Community Meeting will be on Wednesday, January 29th at 7:30 pm. We meet in the Schoolhouse and our one hour meeting is followed by a time to visit with neighbors over coffee, tea and desserts.

ENDOWMENT FUND By Lois Lee

he Greater Hansville Community Center wishes to sincerely thank the following people who have contributed to the Endowment Fund in 2013. The total funds raised for this year (as of December 12, 2013) totals $54,674. We are more than halfway toward our goal of reaching $100,000 by the end of 2015. Our community has confirmed with dollars what our survey in the spring found: “The community center is central to the concept of community; it is the cement that holds us together”. We thank you so very much for your support. Each of you has helped to leave a legacy for future community fun and fellowship. If you have questions, please contact Lois Lee 638-1973. Buck Lake Native Plant Garden By Susan Harrington

Book Review: Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast Compiled / edited by Jim Pojar and Andy MacKinnon

T

ake a walk on the wild side; carry a camera and make room (5.5" x 8.5") for a good reference book to learn about those beautiful native plants along the trail. As the title suggests this covers your walks from the Cook Inlet in Alaska, down the Canadian coast, around the Queen Charlotte Islands, Vancouver Island, western Washington and western Oregon to Eugene. Are your feet sore yet? This textbook--assigned for the Kitsap County Extension Native Plant Advisor course--became my favorite nature walk reference book in spite of my early whining about not being able to find plants easily. I was new to this whole plant ID thing and my Latin was lacking. The more I explore the book though, the more I rely on the photos for native plant identification and the NOTES section for interesting history and uses. In class you'd often hear "according to Pojar…" (pronounced poe-har). Now, as a reference for my monthly columns, Pojar has provided valuable insight on the ecology and uses of native plants. Color coded sections of this 528-page guide are divided into major sections including trees, shrubs, wildflowers, aquatics, oddballs, graminoids, ferns & allies, mosses & liverworts and lichens. Won't you impress your friends with your new knowledge? You'll confidently advise them that the grass, sedge and rush families are all graminoids. Or wow them with information from the "oddballs" section on the Drosera rotundifolia, an INSECT-EATING PERENNIAL! Now that I'm more familiar with the territory, I don't whine much about finding an unfamiliar plant in the book. The Latin, however, is still daunting. Carpe bookum!

red and Jo Nelson moved to Hansville in 2001 after building their new home overlooking Skunk Bay. Fred retired in 2005 from a career in marketing, advertising and television/film production. Jo retired in 2008 after 42 years with Avis in sales management.

Fred first volunteered with the Hansville Greenway group helping with the production of a presentation video and later served as vice president. He joined the Greater Hansville Community Center board in 2006 and served for 2 years as VP for Community Affairs, 2 terms as President and 2 terms as Past President. He volunteered for the Futures Project and served as a representative and committee chairman of the Greater Hansville Area Advisory Council until it disbanded. Fred currently serves as maintenance coordinator for the community center. Jo organized the Norwegian Point Park volunteers committee and was the leading force in getting the boathouse and cabins painted. She currently serves as rental coordinator for the Community Center. Both Fred and Jo have been active volunteers for nearly all of the community center events. They also are stewards for the Nature Conservancy’s Foulweather Bluff Preserve. Thanks for your service, Nelsons!

his is a reminder that the annual sale is eight months away, plenty of time to organize those shelves, closets and garages and donate the extra items to GHCC for the biggest income producer of the year.

December 7th was our first Drop Off at the Norwegian Point Park, (NPP), Boat House. Although it was cold outside the heaters and the activity inside was just the same as using the GHCC Annex. Our skillful department heads were able to fill their bins and have their tables cleaned off by the end of the day so there was no need for the “Monday Sort”, or the need to transfer the bins on Monday to the boat house for storage. Thank you to The Hansville Grocery for providing the coffee which went well with the other goodies brought by helpers. We are giving you a chance to amass your donations for the next Drop Off that will be on March 8th, 2014 again at NPP Boat House from 10 am to 2 pm, and hopefully a little warmer outside. WARMING STATION - OPEN HOUSE

SOFTWARE PIRATES SPREADING MALWARE

id you know that the Greater Hansville Community Center is a designated Warming Station in the event of a natural disaster that causes extended power outage in our area? Well, it is and you now have an opportunity to learn more about this resource before there is such an emergency.

e all like a bargain. But being the bargain hunters we are, we keep looking for a better price. Heck, I’m not afraid to tell you that I do that! Beware: If the price you find is way below retail, you could be downloading pirated software. Here are some of the things to look for:

An OPEN HOUSE will occur on January 18, 2014 from 12 Noon until 2 pm at the Greater Hansville Community Center. Visit the Warming Station as it would be set up if needed in the event of an emergency. You are invited to come, ask questions and view the site. The following description gives information about the GHCC Warming Station and how it will function in the case of an extended power outage:

Poor quality or missing packaging (getting the software in a plain envelope). The disk may have a label that is paper--not a spiffylooking factory burned disk. The recorded side of the disk may have shading differences, such as happens when you burn your own CDs or DVDs. A legitimate factory created disk will usually be only one color on the bottom. The site given to download it may be really strange address--not what you would expect. Installing the software may be very difficult and asking for tech support may be a waste of time. Any user manuals may look like they are written by a 3rd grader--with bad grammar and spelling (well, I realize that this is a common problem, but these would be particularly bad).

The GHCC Warming Station will be open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM the first day following the first 12 hours of an extended power outage due to heavy winds, rain, snow, ice storms or a combination thereof and no estimate for a repair on that day has been provided. The GHCC Warming Station will provide warmth and warm nutrition during the day while assisting individuals in trying to locate friends, neighbors or relatives that can provide continuing comfort for people displaced by the outage. The GHCC Warming Station will continue to be open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on subsequent days until the power is restored. The GHCC Warming Station is not able to provide overnight ( Shelter ) accommodations during this type of emergency. In the event of a major natural disaster emergency like a Tsunami, Earthquake, Flood, or Tornado the GHCC Warming Station will provide overnight coverage and evacuation as necessary with aid of King/Kitsap County American Red Cross Emergency Response Team personnel, vehicles and supplies. For information regarding the GHCC Warming Station please contact George Briese, gbriese@centurytel.net or 360-638-1499. Purpose of the Open House: To familiarize the Greater Hansville Community with the set-up, operation, and capabilities / limitations of the GHCC Warming Station. Format: Tour of the facility, demonstration of the capabilities to be provided, presentation of Warming Station objectives / schedule, time for question and answers. Cookies and tea will be provided.

So--what might happen? At best, you will have spent your money on an inferior product that won’t have all the features of the real thing. Tech support may be nonexistent. The worst thing that could happen--well, there are several bad things, come to think of it. First, the bad guys will have your credit card info and you’ll be subject to identity theft. Second, the cut-rate program may have more than you bargained for--infecting your computer with all sorts of malware. My suggestion? Sure, shop around but you’ll probably know when you find an unbelievable “bargain.” It will be a fraction of the normal retail cost. Bite the bullet and spend a few dollars more and get the real thing. As always, all my tips are found on my website at http:// www.abeconsultants.com/resources.htm.
