By Lois Lee, 2013 Board President
une means the official start of summer—welcome! Summer also means many activities at the Greater Hansville Community Center.
If you’ve done your spring cleaning, you may have found some treasures in your closets or garage that you now feel you can part with. Bring them to the Rummage Sale Drop Off on Saturday, June 8 between 10 AM and 2 PM. Are you moving into smaller quarters and want to donate some of your furniture? We could pick it up for the rummage sale. Our Social Hour and Lending Library will be open June 25 from 10 am to 2 pm ready for games, visits and coffee, tea and cookies. Come up and say hello, stay the whole time or just long enough to grab a book. It’s your choice. Start your Fourth of July celebrations by greeting Uncle Sam at the Red, White and Blue Breakfast. Attend our free Picnic in the Park and bring the family. The Show and Shine Car Show is sure to please the guys and the ladies will enjoy a break from cooking by purchasing delicious sandwiches and other great foods at the kitchen while the children play games with volunteers to lead the games. Now if we just have beautiful weather, that would be a perfect day! Be sure to mark your calendars for the biggest rummage sale in North Kitsap County. We have been praised as having the most organized and well sorted goods too. he sale is on Saturday, August 10 from 9 to 4 and again Sunday, August 11 from 9 to 1. Finally, wind up the summer with an event for all children (including senior citizens with enough nerve to fly down the hill in a homemade car) on Saturday, August 24. Call Captain Coaster for advice on how to construct your car to get an early start on the event. cont. on page 4

SOCIAL HOUR / LENDING LIBRARY
oin us Tuesday, from 10 – 2 in the East Room at the Greater Hansville Community Center at Buck Lake Park. This is our last get together until September. Come collect some summertime reading from the Lending Library. We’ve stocked additional selections for you to take out now and return in the fall. Bring your friends and play a game of cards. Come visit and enjoy the cookies, coffee and company of neighbors and friends. Drop in for a few minutes or the entire day! An enjoyable time is guaranteed! You do not need to be a member of the Greater Hansville Community Center to stop by and enjoy the Center!
GMC TRUCK FOR SALE An ’84 GMC truck with new tires and a new fuel tank is parked in front of the Hansville Auto Repair Shop. It was donated to the Greater Hansville Community Center Rummage Sale and can be bought for $1500. It is an automatic 4 speed 5 liter V8, ¾ ton 2500, long bed that runs well and is a good work truck. Ask for the key inside the repair shop. GHCC replaced the fuel tank for $500 combined with new tires, which makes this a bargain. And you would be helping the Center provide programs and maintenance of the center. Thanks for your support. More information, call Lois Lee 638-1973.

EGLON NEWS I have to make this short because while there is a lull in fishing opportunities in June...I am writing this in mid-May. I have got to get up in a few hours to see if there are any more halibut lurking close to home. One of President Herbert Hoover’s lesser known quotes (I’m sure you are familiar with most of what he said) seems to have been written just for the North Kitsap Puget Sound Anglers: “A good fisherman possesses much faith and hope or he would not fish. He gains even in charity when he listens to other fisherman”. Please join us June 12 starting at 6 pm in the Driftwood Key Clubhouse to listen to other fisherman and gain charity.

Summer Beach Night!
A
s the school year winds down, the summer beach activities begin to happen in Eglon! We’ll be kicking off our first Summer Beach Night of 2013 on Wednesday, June 19 at 6:00 pm. So pack up your own picnic dinner, bring along the sand toys and let’s get this Eglon tradition rolling. Remember to pencil in this easy dinner event for every Wednesday night, all summer long, until September 4th. Gene and Pat DuVall will have the fire going by 6 pm ready for your hot dogs, chicken, corn on the cob and lots, and lots of marshmallows! While you have your calendar out, you’ll also want to mark out time for the Eglon Community 4th of July Potluck held at the beach, after the Kingston Parade, at 2:00 pm. Bring along your own dishes, silverware and a festive potluck item to share. You won’t want to miss this time to meet up with your neighbors as we gather to celebrate our great country! I just want to take a moment to thank everyone involved in the Spring Craft, Plant and Bake Sale. It was a beautiful day and although it seemed a bit slow we did almost as well as we did last spring thanks to our vendors, the wonderful Eglon bakers and our green thumb neighbors. A special thanks goes out to Bonnie Bryant Hedman (Event Coordinator), Dana Dukes (Bake Sale Organizer) and Cathy Gomes (Raffle Basket Provider). The funds raised will be put to good use providing scholarship opportunities and help with Schoolhouse maintenance expenses. Enjoy your summer days and I hope to see you at the beach!

A continuing focus of your Community Center is investing in the future leaders within our community. The scholarships we award each year are a way to let the students know that we are proud of their accomplishments and that we want to encourage them to continue to excel. The scholarship award program is funded by individual and community contributions with some matching funds provided by the Greater Hansville Community Center. In order to be considered, students must be residents of the Greater Hansville area. The scholarship committee evaluates the applicants on information provided in 4 areas; academic achievement; financial need; goals and community service. While all this years applicants were very deserving of our support we have limited funds available. We encourage all residents to please remember you can make a Tax Deductible contribution to the scholarship fund through the Greater Hansville Community Center. The Scholarship selection committee comprised of Jo Nelson, Debra Bean, Don Lynch, and Fred Nelson, is pleased to announce that the 2013 scholarship recipients are: Simon Campo will attend University of California, Berkeley. Logan Green will attend Western Washington University. Emily Holbrook will attend University of Montana. Dylan Szerlog will attend Western Washington University. Mackenzie Szerlog will attend Washington State University. Cassidy Trevors will attend Port Townsend School of Massage. Alexander Walker will attend University of British Columbia. The scholarship recipients will be 2013 graduates of Kingston High School Each of these students has demonstrated excellent academic performance, a clear education goal, and a fine record of service to the community. We offer our sincere congratulations and best wishes for continued success in the future. We are confident that they will continue to achieve and serve. If you have questions or would like to know how to contribute please contact: Fred or Jo Nelson, 638 0000.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR BOARD PRESIDENT CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
Volunteers have surveyed one hundred families in our community to glean your opinions about the importance of the center. Nearly 100% of the respondents believe that the center is what makes Hansville unique as a cohesive community. Results of the survey are being compiled and will be published in next month’s Log.
The Endowment fund continues to grow. To date we have $17,370 pledged for 2013 and a couple of people are planning to
include the center in their wills. Our Endowment Fund Advisory Committee is finalizing plans on investment and spending policies for the Fund. Committee members include Bill Fite, Steve Bauer, Chris Brinton, Bonnie Isaacs, Don Lynch, Judy Tallman and Lois Lee.
Some of you have asked, “How did these ideas come about?” Over two years ago, the board began strategic planning for the center. Community café participants said they wanted the center to continue as a place for community events and interaction. In order to assure that goal, it was agreed we needed to work on planning for future funding. A funding committee was formed and has reconvened to continue this effort. Committee members include past leadership of the center and those who agreed to work on this effort over the past two years. If you are interested in helping us to develop funding opportunities, please contact us. Thank you to all of you who volunteer, donate and in general cheer us on as we do our work to continue the community center.

TAX HELP THANK YOU
I
BY ED RAMEY, LOCAL COORDINATOR
wish to thank you for your support in publicizing our programs which makes it possible for the public to find and use our free income tax preparation service.
Martha and Mary is especially generous in their support of our program welcoming us into their facility for some 33 days each year. This is a huge donation of time and resources on their part. They give us the use of their reception staff, their conference room for 6 or more hours per day and the use of another room as a waiting room as well as generous support from IT, the laundry staff, photo-copy service and field many phone calls from the public inquiring about our schedule and service. The attitude of both management and the staff is always friendly, generous and appreciative of our gift to the community which would not be possible without their support. Again, thanks to you for your support. Editors note: and thank you for providing this service!

GREENWAY | EVENTS June 8| 10:00 am | By Laurie Yamamura
HANSVILLE GREENWAY UPDATE “Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer, Roll roll out those sodas and pretzels and beer, Roll out those lazy, hazy crazy days of summer, Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer.” These words written by Charles Tobias and popularized in 1963 sung by Nat King Cole used to bring a semi-official declaration of happy days starting in June. The melody was written by Hans Carste in such an uplifting chorus that anyone who sings this song would immediately get outside and enjoy the longer and warmer summer day. So this is my invitation to enjoy summer days and early nights in the Greenway. Family and friends can enjoy a game of tag in the meadow areas or hide and seek amongst the trees in Welcome Wood or just enjoy the view of avian activity from the Lower Hawk’s Pond platform. It is up to you how you enjoy your summer day. A reminder that steward led walks will be held on Saturday June 8, at 10 am. Meet us in the Buck Lake parking lot with a bottle of water and a venturesome spirit to enjoy nature. Here are some little known ‘first happened in June’ facts. First drive in movie theatre opened in New Jersey on June 6th in 1933. The invention of the baseball was presented on June 12, 1839. Sally Ride became the first woman astronaut to go into space on June 18th, 1983. The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Here is a list of lesser known but just as fun June celebratory days. The 5th is World Environment Day and the 6th is national Yo-Yo Day. Best Friends Day is the 8th of June and of course, Flag Day is June 14th. Father’s Day and Fresh Veggies Day is this June 16th as well as the 18th is Go Fishing Day. Ice Cream Soda Day is on the 20th and the 21st is Finally Summer Day. Towards the end of the month we have Forgiveness Day on the 26th and my favorite, Hug Day is on the 29th. You may not notice as you walk through the Greenway but in the past 45 days we had some tireless volunteers who planted over 550 donated cedar starts. Their hard work and dedication is part of what volunteers do to keep the diversity of trees in the Greenway up to par. Other volunteers are busy clearing off the trails after some windy weather and heavy rains. Some other volunteers replaced a weakened culvert before it became a problem for trail users. Other volunteers have been keeping invasive weeds at bay early in the season. School is almost out and I hope to see more walkers and children out on the trails enjoying the sunshine and nature. The Greenway puts on a program each year where elementary students come and visit and get a tour. In a recent report Ken Shawcroft reported several sightings of avian activity and that one group got to see a deer doing its thing in the meadow. A reminder to let your dogs enjoy the Greenway while they are on a leash and to place used Mutt Mitts into your garbage can or a waste receptacle provided by the County at Buck Lake Park. I am a big fan of re-using anything plastic instead of using it once and throwing it into the landfill. As a former dog owner I have found the bags that newspapers come in to be pretty heavy duty for transporting poop bags or getting scooped poop into a garbage can. “From twelve ‘til two tells what the day will do.” is the weather quote for June. We welcome you to come visit the Greenway come rain or shine ‘cause no matter where you go there is beauty to behold.

ust another reminder that August 24, 2013 is just around the corner and it’s time to get ready for the annual GHCC Hansville Coaster Games. 2013 should be another fun year, we’ve heard rumors about several new contestants who are building new cars in search of the coveted “King of the Hill” award. But we need a few volunteers too. Our regular start line crew will be called away to a wedding. The start line needs 3 or 4 people at all times to get the racers in position and ready to race. If you’re interested in getting involved please call Captain Coaster (Chuck Strahm) and let him know. It really is fun! (360 638 2882) And remember the Coaster Games are open to kids of ALL ages. Take a look at the rules at Hansville.org for details. Hope we see you on the hill on August 24, 2013 at 2:00 pm.

Friends Of Point No Point Lighthouse | By Robert Hamm, Board Member
T
he young couple that came to the lighthouse one blustery Saturday afternoon in April when my wife Sharron and I were docents appeared very much in love. They asked me to take their picture in front of the building and when I suggested they kiss, they happily obliged. Picture taken they thanked me politely and walked off to the beach with their arms around each other. After about an hour, when it had started to rain, they came inside, all wet and giggling. They told us they had got engaged on the beach and we were the first to know. Then, after showing us the ring, they invited us to their wedding sometime this summer. Last year a couple that was staying in the rental duplex, the former keepers’ quarters next to the lighthouse, came by to ask if there was a fish market in the neighborhood. I told them no but there was plenty of fish in all the waters surrounding us. They saw the humor and came in for a tour of the lighthouse.
another ship between the Point and Whidbey Island. They were in a two man submarine and retrieved a number of artifacts from the ship, which lies in 320’ of water, some of which they offered to loan to us for the season…….there was an unusual amount of traffic around the portable toilets one morning when a large number of Native Americans on their annual canoe journey landed their craft on the beach. Picnic in the Park and Car Show n’ Shine
T
July 21, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
he Greater Hansville Community Center will host the annual Picnic in the Park and Car Show n’ Shine on July 21 from 10 am to 4 pm.
The Car Show n’ Shine is held with Picnic in the Park so you can enjoy the many classic and hot rod cars on display. You can also display your own classic, custom or vintage car or motorcycle if you would like for just $15. Registration of Cars starts at 9:00 am. The first one hundred car show participants will receive a commemorative car show dash plaque. One free breakfast is offered with vehicle registration until 10:30 am. This year’s entertainment will feature the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Band, a very special treat for all to hear. Another local favorite, The Hometown Band may repeat this year with their special brand of music. Reminiscent of the era when local bands would play in bandstands at community parks, you may find yourself humming along with their renditions of old time musical favorites. New this year will be a pie contest! Yes, just like days gone by, start thinking of the favorite fruit or berry pie you’d like to enter! Details and rules will appear in July’s Log. This will be an exciting, yummy addition to the day! More games for the kids (of all ages!) are being added to make this a fun day for the entire family. Watch for details in July’s Log. Bring you kids, grandkids, the neighbor’s kids and expect to go home happy you all came! So bring a picnic basket, or purchase a picnic lunch from the snack bar inside the center, spread out a blanket on the park grounds and enjoy a fabulous lineup of entertainment on a wonderful summer afternoon at Buck Lake Park. If you have any questions, contact Lois Lee 638-1973 (general information) or Bob Bennion 638-1992 or Tom Bean 360 638-0142 (car questions).
The FBI is Watching! By Art Ellison ABE Computer Consultants, LLC
W
e’ve had several calls from people who have had their computer suddenly taken over by a screen that claims that they have violated some law or another and that this is a notice from the FBI telling them that their computer has been locked and will be released once the user pays a set amount of money. The last one I saw asked for $300. This was an interesting one in that it used the computer’s built-in camera to take a picture of the user and incorporate it into the notice on the screen. If you want to see all the permutations, Google “FBI virus screenshot.” There’s a ton of them. You can’t do a thing with your computer until you either pay the money (we definitely don’t advise that--once you give these people your credit card number your problems really start), or you remove the virus. It can actually be removed quite easily by an experienced person. If you wish to do it yourself, use another computer and google “FBI virus” and you will find plenty of instructions. Interesting to note: In Canada, the virus claims it’s from the RCMP. In Great Britain, it’s the Metropolitan Police. See? We’re not unique here in the U.S. For more tips, visit www.abeconsultants.com and click on the “resources” menu.
NORTH KITSAP FIRE & RESCUE

By Michelle LaBoda
ISTENING AT LUNCH – NKF&R Fire Chief Dan Smith treated guests to a detailed explanation of the fire department’s budget, firefighters treated everyone to grilled hamburgers and guests treated us to a excellent questions and a warm welcome during our annual appearance at the Hansville Neighbors Luncheon. We look forward to returning next year. If your group would like us to come and do the same, just invite us by calling 297-3619. Help LEAD THE PARADE NKF&R firefighters support Kingston’s Fourth of July Celebration by making your donation to that cause through us. For every dollar donated, you’ll get a chance to win either a deluxe Fourth of July Parade package or one of our famous birthday parties. The parade package includes reserved parking for one car and special seating for four at the Cup and Muffin, two seats aboard our flagship fire engine as it leads the parade, and refreshments. This is a priceless opportunity to enjoy our local celebration in style. We donate a limited number of our birthday parties to local charity auctions where these sought-after packages often sell for over $500 each. Included are invitations, fire-themed decorations, party “helmets,” fire-themed treat bags, firefighter games, cake, ice cream and – for the birthday girl or boy – a ride in the fire engine. Make your donation at our headquarters fire station during regular business hours, and you’ll be entered into the drawing which will be held at 5:00 p.m. on July 3 at Tiny Town.
