SOCIAL HOUR / LENDING LIBRARY
By Lois Lee
Here we are celebrating the last month of 2013. Where did this year go?
ood luck to the new board for our community center: Chuck Strahm, President; Connie Gordon, Vice President for Events; Don Lynch, Vice President for Communications, Lynn Hix, Vice President for Rummage Sale, Carolyn Barry, Vice President for Membership; Judy Tallman, Vice President for Fund Development, Mike Bryant, Treasurer; Jane Smith, secretary and Lindsay Vallance, director (new term for the former Trustee position). We presented these new officers and revised By Laws at the annual meeting November 20. Our revised mission statement is: the Greater Hansville Community Center is dedicated to enriching life in the Greater Hansville communities.
cont. on page 4
You are invited to come share stories of your adventures with friends and neighbors over a hot cup of coffee or tea during our monthly Social Hour / Lending Library at the Greater Hansville Community Center. If Joanie shows up, like she did like last month, there may even be a cup of delicious warm soup to enjoy. Of course we always have something sweet provided by our many volunteers to enjoy with that cup of coffee or tea. There are games to play and books to check out from our lending library. Some of these games get pretty exciting as the morning gives way to afternoon and participants are still looking for bragging rights to the big WIN!!

CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR WITH BINGO AT GHCC DECEMBER 31 – DOORS OPEN AT 5:30 PM
B
y popular demand once again Bingo returns to the Greater Hansville Community Center on December 31st. Last year’s New Years Eve bingo party was to a sell out crowd so get there early to avoid any line up. The doors will open at 5:30 pm to allow ample time to get your bingo cards and ink daubers, or a snack before the games begin. Warm up games will begin at 6:30 and the main games will start at 7:00pm. There will be a refreshment bar with good food, soft drinks and coffee available to satisfy your game time appetite. The games will end around 9:30 pm so you will have plenty of time to get home to watch the fireworks at the Space Needle on TV or head out for another party. Everyone is welcome and children under 18 can play if accompanied by a parent or an adult guardian. Remember the more cards you play the better your chance of winning and the larger the cash prizes. The amount of cash prizes are determined by the number of game cards sold, so the more people that play, the larger the cash prizes will be. So bring your family and join your friends for a fun evening. With a little luck you may go home with some extra cash. For more information contact: Fred or Jo Nelson at 638-0000.

WINE SOCIAL THANKS YOU BY SHARON & JON JORDAN What a great community we live in! Thank you for your wonderful support for and participation in the 2013 Wine Social and Grand Auction, both guests and volunteers. Our most formal fund raising event of the year was a sell out and a huge success, almost doubling the amount from last year. The GHCC looked beautiful with a new classy look of black and white. Carefully selected wines were presented along with a wide array of delicious gourmet appetizers. A silent auction offered something of interest for everyone, with the live auction conducted by Don White adding a bit of excitement. We could not make this evening possible without the help of many talented people. Our appreciation and thanks to Jon Jordan, Judy & Jack Tallman, Connie Gordon, Lois Lee, Chuck Strahm,Nancy & Don White,Suzanne & Gary Paulson,Judy & Bob Bale,Karen & Gordon Fountain,Ann Terry&Steve Bauer, Judy & Lou Foritano, Debra & Tom Bean,Marilyn & Jack Christofferson,Laureen Davis, Mary & Mike Duncan,Ramey Fair,Linda Golden,Martha Goldingay,Tamra Gronseth,Sheri & Bill Kiley,Betsy & Patrick Leuner,Lenore & Don Lynch, Sandy McGinnis, Charlene Morgan,Jo & Fred Nelson,Janet & Steve Rodgers,Jeanne Shea, Dody Solaas,Cathy & Marco Tyler, Ruth & Dick Thomas, Sandy Voves and Robin Stempien. We appreciate all of our donors of auction items to the Wine Social. We want to particularity thank the artists and small business people. They are asked to contribute to many good causes during the year. This donation to us is revenue they will not earn so we want to let you know where you can find them to support their businesses: Kats Carpet Cleaning, 360697-4651; Dental Care by Dr. Vicki LeClair, 360-394-4337; Massage In Your Home, Bethany Jorgenson, 206-852-9700; Metal Garden Art, Ray Hammer, 360-821-1927; Photo Restoration, Isabel Gates, 360-265-2000; Pottery, Mark Ferris, 360-6380059; Axe Handle Restaurant, 360-297-4635; Sand carving on glass, Lynn Hix 360-638-0420; Wood turned to art, Norm Hix, 360-638-0420; Landscaping, Betsy & Patrick Leuner of Leuner Landscape Design, 360-638-1639; Vacation Rental, Christy & Rick Mackey, 360-881-0474.

HANSVILLE GREENWAY UPDATE A trip to the ocean in October for three days of R&R gave me time to ponder some forgotten memories. As the ocean waves continually swooshed and crashed on the beach I was reminded that I have been out of touch with a fire within to really live. I have lost a deep connection to really feel the wind, the warmth of the sun and the sanctuary of a shelter. My eyes were failing to see a haven called Earth and ways of sustaining life so that the Earth would not suffer. I wondered how I could be more fully alive with each precious breath. I wondered why it was such a thrill to hear a river or an ocean before I could see it. I said a prayer that I would learn to become more fully alive to love and cherish our home, a place called Earth. Namaste.
The year is slowly coming to an end but before that happens we will have the winter solstice and Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa and many other family favorite traditions to celebrate. My recent favorite way to bring in the new year is to attend the New Year Dip in Nordland, Wahington. Locals and friends, big and small, young and old gather on the small pier in front of the grocery store and with the blast of a horn, they jump into the shallow and very cold waters. Many onlookers cheer them on and family members are close by with blankets and towels. Another tradition I have is to spend time in the Greenway in quiet contemplation while enjoying the solace just hanging out with the trees, shrubs, mushrooms, logs, and ponds. I hope you will include a walk in the Greenway with family and friends as a way to celebrate the past year and a way to bring in the New Year. The last meeting will be December 5th, Thursday in the East Wing at HCC. Please feel free to join us around 7pm if you have wondered what the stewards and their families talk about. Or you would like to find out what stewards do and how to become a steward. For more information go to http://hansvillegreenway.org. “Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.” This quote is from Edith Sitwell who was born in 1887 and published her first poem in 1913. She wrote continuously for many years in spite of her body failing her in many ways. She died in December, 1964.
Celebrate your life, your loves, and your truth every chance you get. Notice what you notice on a winter’s walk in the Greenway. Dress warmly and hold hands with someone dear to you.
COMMUNITY
Page 4
President’s Message cont. from page 1 I am proud to have served as your president this year. The Board enjoys working as stewards to preserve and maintain such a great place where community means so much. As you get ready for the holidays, we hope you will want to clear out some of your extra garage treasures and bring them to our Rummage Sale Drop Off on December 7. We hope you will join us at our year-end holiday activities including The Children’s Holiday Party, come and sing carols with us at the Christmas Concert, join us for Neighbor’s Lunch, and Social Hour/Lending Library and start your New Year’s with Bingo. Finally, this year we instituted our six year Endowment Fund Drive. Nearly $40,000 has been raised to date and we sincerely thank everyone who has given. Next month’s Log will contain a list of the donors to this Fund. Thank you donors! 2013 was a lucky year for the Center. We held many wonderfully successful events and served some fantastic food including Irish (St, Paddy Day) and German (Octoberfest) fare; gourmet appetizers and excellent wines at the Wine Social; and our traditional July 4th breakfast. We enjoyed fellowship including meeting new neighbors at our Social Hour/Lending Library gatherings. We brought magic literally to Neighbor’s Lunch, ate pizza and played Bingo and reminisced about the huge fish that were caught in fishing derbies held at the local resorts and of course we smiled as we watched toddlers in their finery discover eggs in the grass for Easter. We saw kids of all ages race at the Pinewood Derby and Coaster Games. We provided educational opportunities including safe driving classes and Skunk Bay Weather information. We heard great music from the Navy Band and Hometown Band at the summer Picnic in the Park and spring concert, and enjoyed vintage cars at the car show. We got real bargains at the Spring and Fall Book Sales and last (but not least) we had a spectacular Rummage Sale with one young man nearly jumping out of his skin with excitement when he was able to buy his own boat and motor. Thanks to all of you who attended these events and volunteered to help put them on.

t is time! We are ready to spread the holiday spirit throughout the neighborhood. You won't want to miss the annual Eglon Holiday Gift & Bake Sale on Saturday, December 7th at the Schoolhouse from 9 am to 4 pm. Please stop by to visit with neighbors while you search for a unique gift, special holiday decoration or delectable baked item. The coffee will be hot and just being in the 1922 Schoolhouse will set your holiday spirit in motion. As is tradition, we are counting on our bakers to come through for us in the heartwarming "Eglon Way", and ask that baked goods be delivered by 8:30 that morning. It is important that all items be handled with gloved hands and individually wrapped prior to delivery at the Schoolhouse. We are always proud that the proceeds from this sale help to support the Scholarship Fund. So with a happy heart, set out to BAKE! BAKE! BAKE! On the following Saturday, December 14th, the children of Eglon will come alive at the annual Eglon Christmas Program. They will transform the Schoolhouse into a winter wonderland. At 7 pm the lights will be dimmed, the holiday spirit will warm your heart and it is guaranteed that you will step Back in time surrounded by neighbors, family members and friends. Santa has promised to stop by after checking his "naughty and nice" list. (Parents should plan ahead to sneak a small gift, clearly marked with child's first and last name to Santa's helper, who will be standing by the front door) The evening will wind down over holiday snacks, punch and coffee. So if mom has time to put together a plate of cookies to share there will be plenty for all. As has always been the way, the children of Eglon will gather that Saturday morning at the Schoolhouse from 10 am to 12 pm to decorate and practice the play for the evening show. Our hope is that a child or two will decide to play a holiday tune on the original 1891 piano which has been refurbished this fall, thanks to the donations of several lovers of music and antiques. The story has been told that at some point, the students of the Eglon School collected their hard earned nickles and dimes to purchase the used piano for their teacher. She brought music to the community and taught many student how to play. This evening program is an on-going tribute to those who first brought the holiday spirit to the Eglon Community.

I
’ve been asked about tablet computers a lot lately. People want to know what kind to buy and what each one does. I’ll try to briefly answer these questions.
Tablets are offered by a number of companies and come in different sizes. Some are quite specialized and some are full of useful functions. They are quite a bit smaller than laptop computers and will conveniently fit in a briefcase or even a purse. When choosing one, you need to decide just what it is that you need. Are you looking for a computer to do work on the road or something to access your mail and surf the web and maybe view movies and read books. Of course, there’s always that question--just how much do you want to spend? I’d recommend going to the following site to get a good idea of what is out there: http://reviews.cnet.com/tablet-reviews/. You’ll find that you have many choices. A popular tablet is the Apple iPad. No doubt your friends have told you about the Kindle and the Nook. These last two started out as e-readers--allowing you to download and read books. They’ve expanded to allow you internet access. Then there are tablets from companies like Lenovo, Toshiba, LG, Nokia and Samsung to name a few. Many of these tables run the Android operating system (they seem like large smart phones without the phone to me). They can make use of hundreds of apps developed for the Android operating system. Some of the tablets don’t use the Android operating system, but use Windows 8.1. These can’t use the Android apps, but can use windows-based productivity programs, like Microsoft Office. I’d recommend that you read up on the choices and perhaps visit one of the many stores that have tablets on display and get an idea of what is right for you. Remember, all my hints and tips can be found on the website at: www.abeconsultants.com/resources.htm

t’s that time of year to move our events indoors where it’s nice and warm and dry. We’re already planning our annual Pinewood Derby and workshop. The workshop is scheduled for January 25, 2014 from 10:00 am to noon. The Pinewood Derby is scheduled for February 8, 2014 at 2:00 pm. We have PWD car kits available for $5.00 per kit. The kits include the wood blocks, axles, and wheels. Contact Chuck “Captain Coaster” Strahm to get a kit at 638-2882 or at hansvillecoasters@gmail.com This year’s derby will not have an entry fee for all children up to age 16. Racers age 17 and above will be asked for a $5.00 entry fee for their first entry, and then $1.00 for each additional entry. The pinewood derby is great fun for all ages and we will have the same age bracket classes so the young beginners are not racing against the more experienced older racers. And the ever popular “Bling” class will be back for those racers with a penchant for decorating.
Hope we see you there.

n 2005, planning and site work began to replace an overgrown BMX bike course at the Buck Lake County Park, restoring and highlighting plants native to the western region of Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. The first planting of birch trees, vine maples and red flowering currants marked the birth of Buck Lake Native Plant Garden. As planned, it has become an educational and visitor-friendly destination garden. The Garden grew with contributions of design expertise and financial support from the community. As a work in progress, each season brings something new. The Garden has blossomed with the active and enthusiastic commitment of a group of volunteers. Now that the Garden and calendar year wind down we want to thank those passionate volunteers from the Hansville community, the Flotsam and Jetsam Garden Club, and the Kitsap County Master Gardeners: Karen Adams, Susan Black, Mary Booth, Laureen Davis, Marilyn DeRoy, Phoebe Goit, Connie Gordon, Celia Grether, Susan Harrington, Carol Haskins, Sheri Kiley, Patrick Leuner, Don Lynch, Roland Malan., Marianne Mallabon, Nancy Minahan, Sara Nawrot, Mary Neyhart, Dee Peterson, Jane Ritley, Dody Solaas, Jim Stemen, Lindsey Vallance, Hollace Vaughan, and Linda Waltie. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world: indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” ~Margaret Mead The Buck Lake Native Plant Garden year begins again in April. Can we add you to the list? Please visit www.BuckLakeNativePlantGarden.org to sign up for news from the garden.
