Exciting News! Sons of Norway Virtual Pilgrimage Announced Sons of Norway is eager to announce its 2014 Virtual Pilgrimage! This exciting new member benefit will be an expansion of the current Sports Medal Program and reward members for living an active lifestyle. The Virtual Pilgrimage mirrors Norway’s existing Pilgrimage route from Oslo to Trondheim, a route that was once walked by King Olav Haraldsson (9951030, canonized St. Olav in 1031) himself in the early 11th century as he spread Christianity throughout Norway. The Virtual Pilgrimage encourages members to get out and exercise. Start a walking or running group with lodge members, take a jog around the park, walk your dog, but be sure to track each step. The new member benefit will release materials on the Sons of Norway website in January, 2014. As you walk, you can coordinate your progress with online features and instructions to help you learn about the cultural history of the route: such as historic medieval churches, significant cities, tourist checkpoints and iconic destinations in Norway. After each walk, note your mileage, visit the Sons of Norway Pilgrimage homepage and learn about sites you passed as if you were actually trekking the miles in Norway. The 387 mile route starts in Oslo and ends at the iconic Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. This journey is one of the most popular pilgrimage paths in Norway and the world. Travelers come from all over to follow the network of routes called St. Olav’s Ways. Norway’s regional pilgrim centers provide resources and guidance for pilgrims on their journey to Nidaros Cathedral, the site of St. Olav’s valiant death in the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. As a Sons of Norway pilgrim you will start at Oslo’s Medieval Park and walk through the towns of Eidsvoll, Hamar, Lillehammer, Ringebu, Otta, Oppdal, and Skaun. As you walk you will learn about significant historical and cultural sites along the way. To learn more about the Virtual Pilgrimage and how to participate, please visit the Sons of Norway Website.

AWAKE AT NIGHT Last month in the Maken, the question was asked how much money is enough. I don’t believe there is one answer that will fit everyone. I believe the answer has to be what keeps you awake at night. In a recent business article, this 61 year old man was asking himself, “Will I outlive my money?” Some of his comments were; “my 401k looks like a roller coaster, my house has lost value, will Social Security be there, statistics say I could live to be 90 years old, and will I run out of money before I run out of time?” These are real concerns for those folks that are staring at possible retirement. For those folks in their 30s or 40s, this may seem like no big deal. I have plenty of time and tomorrow I will get serious about my golden years, but right now let the good times roll. I’ve got news for all of you young folks; I used to think the same way. Now that I’m in my so called Golden Years, there are some things that I wished I had done different when I was younger. One serious mistake was to cash in two $10,000 twenty pay whole life insurance policies that I had purchased when I was 21. Each one of those policies, today would be worth anywhere from $60,000$100,000. The reason I cashed them in was I thought the answer to my future was in the stock market. I have since learned that the market goes up and the market goes down. This happens just about every 10-15years, so if you retire at seventy you can expect to go through two of these. When the market goes down it sure would be nice to have some backup income. It won’t be there unless you start doing something now! By now I mean start

sending some money out into the future. One of the best ways to do this is to start a Flexible Annuity. As I mentioned in the Maken last month a flexible annuity can be used to enhance your IRA/401k. After 59 ½ roll your IRA distributions into your annuity. The annuity grows tax deferred and you still have to pay the tax on the distribution. Some of you have money in CDs. Some of it is for emergencies, but some of it is just sitting there, not needed, earning maybe 1% taxable. Why not put those funds into a Flexible Annuity. One of the things the annuity and or IRA/Annuity combo can do for you is give you Peace of Mind. Knowing that you have another nest egg growing that will be available to you when you feel the pinch of inflation, will help you sleep at night instead of lying awake and wondering if you will run out of money before you run out of life. Marlene and I are here to help you get rid of some of the stress. You can telephone me at 1-866648-8889 or email me at “tipper13@comcast.net”. Marlene Taylor, a Charter Life Underwriter, (CLU) will be able to assist you in all of your estate planning needs. She can be contacted at 360-426-5595. Ralph M.
