The Great Northeast Job Fair
he Great Northeast Job Fair gives job-seekers the opportunity to apply to open positions and meet employers faceto-face. The fair takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Genetti Manor, 1505 N. Main Ave., Dickson City, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is sponsored by Geisinger , and cosponsored by TJ Maxx Distribution Center and CPG International. Geisinger, which owns Geisinger Community Medical Center, has become the largest private employer in Luzerne County and is one of the 85-plus companies searching for potential future employees. Though Geisinger is one of the many
healthcare facilities hiring, their open positions are not only for direct patient care. Angelo Venditti, the Chief Nursing Officer at Geisinger Community Medical Center, mentioned the variety of openings available. We have positions open in many departments such as environmental services, food services, nursing, nursing assistants and desk clerks, Venditti said. We are a growing company and intend to continue to grow. Since last year, the unemployment rate has dropped in northeastern Pennsylvania by half a percentage point, but the fair comes at good time when there are still many people looking for a career. The

Scranton-Wilkes-Barre area unemployment rate was recorded at 6.3 percent by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in August. The fair provides job seekers a single environment where they have the chance to apply to multiple companies in person. Venditti said that while applying online to companies is an effective way to find a job, the application becomes one of many, and the benefits of attending this job fair are numerous. If you attend a job fair like this, theres opportunity to connect personally, Venditti said. It gives exposure to people from the organization, and it gives people who are interested in Geisinger exposure to us. Its a great opportunity to see if candidates are a good fit for the positions, and to see if they believe Geisinger is a good fit for them. It also gives the candidates the opportunity to ask questions they might have and ease some anxiety about looking for a new job. With 85-plus companies in pursuit of filling various positions, recruiters are
looking for people who want to find a career, not just a job. Were really looking for people who are going to be Geisinger family over the long term because this job theyre applying for is their passion. Venditti said, Were looking for people with a high level of integrity, compassion and a strong drive to care for people. We want people who are able to sit and talk with the patients and become a partner in the patients healing process. We can give people training on the technical skills that they need. Were looking for people who want to work with those who are ailing and ill. These desired qualities extend beyond the careers that are in direct care with patients. The departments of food services, environmental services, and others play a vital role and they also need to have those attributes. Companies attending the fair include services in health care facilities, insurance, distributors and many others. Admission to the fair is free. There will also be a random drawing to giveaway $100 every hour during the event.

Writing a resume is another aspect of the job hunt that can stoke your nerves. Though resume writing has changed considerably over the years, some conventional wisdom about resumes still prevails, and how closely potential applicants adhere to these rules goes a long way toward
determining if they earn a chance at an interview. • Me, myself and I: While the resume should showcase your professional accomplishments, it also should showcase how your skills relate to the job you’re applying for. This way the company understands you have researched the position and are in tune with what they’re looking for in an applicant. • One document for all responses: A resume is not a static document. It needs to change depending on the job you’re applying to. Although there will be certain information that can remain the same, update the skills and other information based on each position. • One page is best: Applicants were long told to keep their
resumes concise, limiting the document to just one page. However, if your experience is extensive or one page cannot contain a long job history, don’t be afraid to submit a two-page resume. • Failing to be selective: You need not include your entire job history on a resume, especially if certain past positions you have held are completely irrelevant to the position for which you are applying. Don’t be afraid of job gaps, either. Many of today’s recruiters understand that the changing economy can make it challenging to maintain steady employment. •Over embellishment: Do not embellish your skills. Always be open and honest on your resume. You may be asked to prove you can perform
certain tasks, and if you cannot back up what is included on a resume, you will have wasted your time and the time the interviewer spent discussing his company’s opening with you. • Imperfections: A resume is a reflection of you, so one with typographical errors or a poor layout is never acceptable. Ensure your resume is as professional and errorfree as possible. Have a friend or a proofreader look it over before distributing. • Paid positions: Internships or volunteer work are perfectly acceptable to include on a resume, particularly for younger applicants who may not have a wealth of professional experience. Include a mix of information on the resume that will reflect your versatility.

Not surprisingly, career opportunities in healthcare and health and wellness are on the rise, and the following are a handful of careers men and women interested in health and wellness may want to consider. Health educator: The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that between 2012 and 2022, the job outlook, which projects the percent change in employment, for health educators and community workers was 21 percent, nearly twice the average growth rate for all occupations during the same period. Health educators perform a host of tasks, including teaching and promoting various wellness practices. Health educators may also develop strategies and campaigns to promote wellness. Massage therapist: Massage therapists help people recover from injury and relieve stress, but they also might be used to improve circulation and increase relaxation, both of which can contribute to their patients long-term health. The BLS projects the job outlook for massage therapists between 2012 and 2022 to be 23 percent, indicating that there figures to be an array of opportunities available to men and women interested in pursuing massage therapy.
