We have dedicated and experienced lecturers in RP and, in particular, I am glad to have the guidance of my lecturer, Mr Raymond Yeo. He has a great sense of humour, my classmates and I enjoy attending his classes. One of my best memories so far was when I attended the RP orientation camp with my classmates in 2016, where there were singers and bands, music and dance. The experience was amazing! I’ve enjoyed many good moments in RP and I’m happy to have supportive classmates who constantly encourage me when I’m feeling down. I’ve made the right decision to join RP. Be part of us and get ready to make wonderful memories for life here!

Seeing Engineering in a New Light in Japan
42
During a visit to Osaka, Japan on March 2017, our batch of Diploma in Engineering Systems and Management (DESM) students experienced an encounter that changed their perspective towards operational engineering. The 24 DESM students, accompanied by two staff members, visited a variety of railway-related organisations and took an immersive look at the operations of railways and the maintenance of trains in Japan. Through this learning experience, the students were exposed to clean workplaces and lean operations. This led them to believe that excellence can be achieved through the application of commitment, deep skills and diligence. The students also went on a trip to Kyoto Railway Museum, where they could appreciate the evolution of railways in Japan and the correlative impact on the country’s development and way of life. Witnessing what was possible, these students were eager to apply their learning to Singapore’s rail industry in due course.
On the agenda was also an exchange trip to Japan’s National Institute of Technology, Nara College, where the group was warmly welcomed. Each RP student was paired with a local Japanese student for a fun and meaningful culture sharing session. This was followed by a series of visits to the college’s engineering laboratories, where the local students presented their projects. It wasn’t all about studies for these students! The Nara College visit was capped off with a friendly soccer match, and our students also enjoyed some wellearned downtime visiting the famous Shrine in Kyoto and viewing the early cherry blossoms.
Mission Accomplished on a Study Trip to New Zealand March 2017 witnessed the furthest, and by far the coldest, Students Overseas Trip undertaken by the School of Engineering! Our Diploma in Aerospace Engineering (DAE) students were exposed to a highly enterprising and innovative engineering culture in New Zealand and, in particular, to Martin Jetpack, the New Zealand-owned, designer and manufacturer of Jetpack. Our students were tremendously inspired as the experiences further spurred their creativity and perspectives towards aircraft design. The DAE students also got to view Antarctic research programmes that were launched from Christchurch, New Zealand and gained insights into the types of aircraft and equipment used in the programmes. This immersive visit had the students experiencing an Antarctic storm in a simulator, and getting up close and personal on the Hagglund Ride, a vehicle used in the Antarctic missions.

Fan Jingxiu Diploma in Supply Chain Management Year 3 Jingxiu was assigned to DHL Global Forwarding Pte Ltd on a five-month internship in the final year of her studies. Her daily role was to monitor and attend to customer complaints in DHL’s customer service department. This involved taking the initiative to coordinate and engage staff from different departments to resolve issues – a skill she found to be essential in her role. She was also involved in launching a new system in the Ocean Freight department, where she was appointed as a backup once a week. Attached to the consolidation recovery team, she assisted in the transferring of shipment data into the new system. Internship in the Ocean Freight department greatly benefitted Jingxiu as she gained extensive knowledge on handling shipping documents, and her concepts learnt in RP were further reinforced through this internship. Jingxiu has gained a deep understanding of what employers in the supply chain industry are looking for – decisive, efficient, knowledgeable and accurate team players who don’t fear change.
Dreams Do Come True: DAVM Internship at Jetstar Asia Airways Pte Ltd
Nurul Syazwani Binti Mohamed Suhaimi Diploma in Aviation Management 2017 Graduate Syzawani’s dream came true in her final semester of study. As part of her internship with Jetstar Asia Airways Pte Ltd, she underwent a course of theory and practical training to become a certified cabin crew member. It was an internship on the move as Syazwani flew to various destinations across the world. Through this job, she learned about aviation safety and security, aircraft operations, evacuation, communication skills, standard operating procedures, cabin management and airline service procedures. While safety is of paramount importance when looking after the cabin, Syazwani further learned that customer service, professionalism, multi-tasking and connecting with people are also important skills to master when working for an airline. Syazwani attributed her excellent performance to RP’s collaborative learning environment, which gave her the knowledge, skills and confidence to resolve any challenges that might arise on a flight. With that, she was later offered a full-time position with Jetstar, which she gladly accepted.
Community Projects Play a part in making a difference to society through our community projects! Let There Be Light! International Service Learning Project: TFSCALE III Outbound Programme to Yangon, Myanmar The Temasek Foundation International – Specialists’ Community Action and Leadership Exchange is an exchange programme that aims to build leadership capabilities and develop friendship among Asian student leaders in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) university and polytechnics. With this mission in mind, a team of 21 SEG students travelled to Yangon, Myanmar in March 2017 for a two-week outbound programme. They worked closely with students from Yangon Technological University (YTU) to design and install a Photovoltaic and Lighting System in an underprivileged primary school to help save on electricity bills. This cross-cultural learning experience gave students from both countries an opportunity to apply what they had learned in the classroom to solve real-life problems. They also conducted engineering-related workshops which sparked an interest in engineering among Myanmar’s younger generation. It was an eye-opening experience for our SEG students as they had a chance to live the Burmese lifestyle and culture through celebratory activities such as the Myanmar Thingyan Festival (Water Festival), where they made and shared the Burmese traditional dessert and participated in the Burmese traditional dance. The SEG students also toured the YTU campus and visited places of interest in Yangon.
Patience Has Its Own Rewards Engineering in Community Project: Solar Toy Workshop with Fei Yue Family Service Centre In an exciting second collaboration with Fei Yue Family Service Centre (FYFSC), 11 SEG students and six staff members organised an Engineering in Community (EIC) project to conduct a Solar Toy Workshop in May 2017 for FYFSC’s beneficiaries. The workshop, themed “Patience”, was held at ACE The Place Community Club, supported by People’s Association and kind volunteers from Creative Eateries Pte Ltd. The surprise guest appearance by a Member of Parliament, Mr Vikram Nair, added to the excitement. The workshop was attended by children from ages 11 to 14, who had the opportunity to learn about the basics of simple circuitry and solar energy as they were guided through the process of assembling a solar toy. A mini-competition was held to see whose solar toy could travel the furthest and this motivated the children to complete the assembling of their toys. Being able to give back to the community is an integral part of RP’s service learning, and this particular experience has been valuable for our students.
45
Student Achievements SEG students love a good challenge, and we are particularly proud of our problem-solving skills! Our students regularly participate in local and international competitions, constantly thinking outside the box to conceptualise fresh ideas, and striving for excellence in every field. Here’s sharing some of 2017’s impressive achievements.
46
Tactics Ensure Victory for RP at the Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition (SAFMC) 2017 Two SEG teams took part in the 2017 Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition (SAFMC), which was an exciting and unique event organised by DSO National Laboratories and Science Centre Singapore, and supported by Ministry of Defence (MINDEF). Held in March 2017 at NUS High School, the event saw our teams competing against around 50 others. Team RP Black, five students from Diploma in Aerospace Engineering were second runners-up in the Category D1 - most creative award, where the task was to design, build and fly their flying machines to overcome set challenges. In addition, the team was also required to present its design and learning journey to a panel of judges.
