There are many reasons why I enjoy my course — the f irst being that it is unique to RP! Our lessons are based on real-life situations rather than just theory. We learn a lot of programming languages, but we do not stop at just reading the codes. We create our own applications with them. These hands-on experiences help us to remember what we were taught during the lessons. RP’s facilities are top-notch. I have lessons at both SOI’s Samsung and iOS labs, which are equipped with the latest technology. The lecturers are very supportive and help us to think outside the box to explore niche and forward-looking subject areas outside those taught in lessons. RP students have opportunities to go on overseas study trips. I went on two such trips – one to Malang, Indonesia and the other to Seoul, Korea. I had a memorable experience in Malang as my friends treated me to a birthday surprise when we were there. My trip to Seoul was amazing too as I experienced winter there, which was a first for me. Learning about the Korean heritage and their way of life was eye-opening. Do seize the opportunity to go on such overseas study trips when you join us at RP!

RP SOI Students Helped Cabbies to Conquer the Digital Platforms Sixty cabbies attended a SkillsFuture For Digital Workplace (SFDW) pilot programme at RP, which was designed to educate taxi drivers from the National Taxi Association on digital literacy. Participants were introduced to digital platforms and applications such as Parking.sg, ePayment methods such as PayNow, Internet Banking and other relevant business applications. The SOI students were engaged as co-trainers to support this programme and they saw it as a good learning opportunity for them to be part of the greater effort to promote digital literacy. More importantly, they could play their part to help the community of taxi drivers in guiding them to familiarise with various applications.
Overseas Internship Opportunities Umaira served her internship at National Institute of Technology, Anan College, Japan, during her third year of study at RP. Umaira’s internship required her to attend lessons to learn the Japanese language and culture, doing research for Anan City Government, and eventually coming up with an Android Application that provides real-time information and updates about Anan City. The research was a breeze to Umaira and she credits that to her learning experience in RP, where she has been trained well to be an independent and resourceful learner. This overseas internship opportunity allowed Umaira to experience how to professionally deal with important projects and assignments in an unfamiliar and foreign environment and she felt that this fruitful experience will stay and benefit her in many ways. Through this internship, Umaira has also learnt the need to be self-disciplined and resourceful, more than she ever needed to be. Most importantly, this experience has also allowed Umaira to reflect on her programming language proficiency, which she aimed to improve on. Umaira eventually graduated in 2017 with a Diploma in Business Information Systems with Merit.
31 It was a great opportunity to be able to have my internship in Japan. The skills and knowledge I have received during this internship programme would benefit me in the near future.

DISM Students Clinched Silver Medals in the Cyber Defenders Discovery Camp Competition 2017 32
Two teams of students from the Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM) clinched silver medals in the 5th Cyber Defenders Discovery Camp (CDDC 2017) Competition, organised by the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA) of the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF). The competition, organised for junior college, polytechnic, and university students, was held from 1 June 2017 to 8 June 207 at Singapore University of Technology and Design. As part of the programme, a 3-day training camp was held, where industry professionals trained the participating cyber defenders on the latest cyber defence methodologies and techniques such as how to uncover system vulnerabilities, identify signs of security breaches, and the different techniques to counter cyber threats. Following that, participants had to pit their cyber defending and offensive skills against each other in a live cyber battlefield. Our students applied their skills gained from the training camp and after-class training provided at RP and put up a good defence against attacks from the other teams while attacking the other teams’ systems at the same time. They were also tasked with completing a series of side challenges put up by the organisers such as steganography and compromising vulnerable Internet of Things devices.
