a day in the life of a

game development intern Curious to know what it’s like to be on an internship? Follow Year 3 Diploma in Game Design (DGD) student, Seetoh Wei Tung to find out! Ready to begin the day, fellow DGD intern Sng Chen Chen and I arrive at No Average Joe, a content and game production company.

Accompanied by our colleague, we head to a nearby hawker centre for lunch. The best way to bond is over a good meal! 2

#DiscoverRP

After settling in at my assigned workstation, I start working on my latest project. My task? To develop a new top-secret mobile game for No Average Joe. There are many intricacies to the job, from designing characters and levels to writing codes using various software.

To ensure that I’m on track, I ask for Chen Chen’s help to test the mobile game that I’m working on. I note down Chen Chen’s feedback on areas such as user experience and visual smoothness.

Back in the office, we discuss the technical aspects of the game and brainstorm for ideas on how to improve it. Searching for more inspiration, I decided to try out O$P$, an original pixel game developed by No Average Joe. I also challenge my colleagues to an old-school game on the retro arcade machines. By the end of our session, I have new ideas on how to bring my game to the next level!

The company occasionally takes part in gaming events, and one of my duties involves testing retro game consoles for our booth. From unpacking and hooking the consoles to an old-school TV to playing classic video games, it’s a nostalgia-inducing process that I enjoy. Of course, I rope in my team – the more, the merrier!

Seetoh Wei Tung Diploma in Game Design School of Technology for the Arts Year 3 How has RP prepared you for the internship? “The comprehensive DGD curriculum and modules have equipped me with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to perform at work effectively. For example, the Game Design Workshop module familiarised me with the game design software that I’m currently using.” What are your most memorable experiences so far?

As part of my internship, I have to complete a weekly summary report. It includes details on what I’ve learned, my work and daily experiences so far.

“I had the opportunity to help out at GameStart Asia 2019, one of Singapore’s largest gaming conventions. I had a wonderful time, especially because I had the chance to try out all the exciting upcoming games! It was a truly unforgettable experience.” Tell us your biggest internship takeaways.

And that concludes an average day of my internship. This opportunity has been an eye-opener. I’ve picked up valuable skills and experience, and am now one step closer to my future career in game development and design. 4

“Working at No Average Joe has allowed me to pick up practical experience and develop effective work habits that will help me achieve more for my career in the future.”

Dickson Teo Lecturer, School of Technology for the Arts “The Diploma in Game Design offered by RP STA develops our students to be motivated learners who will contribute to the digital and gamification industry.

Mr Joe Peter Managing Director and Founder, No Average Joe “Wei Tung is the sole programmer and level designer for a mobile game that we are developing to commemorate the company’s 10th anniversary. While we authored the concept, Wei Tung has been proactive in enhancing aspects of the game’s narrative. It was evident early on that he is one of the brightest game development students that we’ve worked with. He is exceptionally driven and stays positive in the face of adversity. It is also impressive that he continues to work on his games in his own time. RP’s emphasis on building a strong portfolio plays a key role in helping students develop the appropriate skills needed to excel in the workforce. I am very impressed with the fact that students are always encouraged to participate in game jams, as well as work on their projects – not just to pad their portfolio, but in many cases, to make them winners.

Students are immersed in a unique learning environment and given opportunities to work on real projects, guided by their lecturers and industry specialists. This allows them to hone their skills in an authentic and professional setting even before they step foot in the workforce.”

Diploma in Game Design (DGD) DGD aims to nurture new generations of game designers who possess both the technical know-how and the design skills demanded by the industry.

What’s life really like in RP, you ask? Our beloved alumni tell all!

Rupalavanya Balasubramaniam Diploma in Arts & Theatre Management

School of Technology for the Arts 2016 Graduate

“Joining RP was an unexpected decision that paid off. I started learning Indian Classical Dance at six years old and enrolled in the School of the Arts, Singapore (SOTA) at 14. By the time I was in year 4, I realised that SOTA wasn’t the place for me. Under the encouragement of my thenVice-Principal, I decided to take up arts management in RP and never looked back. In my first weeks at RP, I was still extremely shy and timid. I knew I had to step out of my comfort zone – to do daily presentations, work as a team and actively participate in class – to

obtain good results. A huge factor that helped to build up my self-confidence was the support and understanding from my lecturers. I was empowered to achieve more once I began believing in my capabilities and potential. What also made a difference was joining Indian Cultural Group (ICG). My main motivation was to inspire others to connect with their culture and heritage, but it was an enriching experience that enabled me to grow holistically. I’ve also made many friends through ICG events!”

“I’ve always loved sports, and when it came time to pick a diploma, I decided to delve into the science behind sports and exercise. RP is the only school that offers such a comprehensive range of diploma courses across sports skills, so coming here was a natural choice. The diploma is very well-rounded, but as a more hands-on individual, the practical modules were what I enjoyed the most. My journey to becoming a strength and rehabilitation coach started from my

internship as a sports trainer. I had the opportunity to work with young athletes and elderly folks who needed physiotherapy. I was able to put the skills I learned in school into practice while picking up new ones along the way. Worth mentioning are RP’s strong industry ties, as well as accreditation with overseas universities. I was able to get a whole year off my degree programme, which helped to speed up my entry into the workforce!”

Charlene Chong

“I’ve always been passionate about hospitality; my dad owned a bistro, so my interest piqued from an early age. My decision to join RP’s Diploma in Hotel & Hospitality Management was an eyeopening one. RP’s tagline, “Discover, Transform, Achieve” actually sums up my three years in RP! During my first year, I participated in many Interest Groups (IG), camps and events where I discovered new interests and skills – I even took a shot at archery. I ended up joining the School of Hospitality IG, where I planned and participated in large-scale events, such as the freshman orientation programme and IGNITE! Music Festival. These experiences pushed me beyond my comfort zone and allowed me to form lasting friendships.

Cabin Crew at Singapore Airlines

At RP, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to broaden your horizons. I had my first taste of living abroad during my overseas internship with Hard Rock Hotel in Bali. I loved learning on the job, experiencing new cultures and interacting with guests – this internship was what influenced me to become a cabin crew! Our lecturers offered constant support and guidance, not just in academics, but in developing a future-ready skillset and portfolio. This emphasis played a crucial role in helping me land my internship and jobs after graduation. So dear future junior, if you’re thinking of joining RP, be prepared to receive plenty of opportunities, skills and experiences beyond textbook learning.”

“I started recreational diving at the age of nine, so I’ve always been interested in the ocean and its ecosystem. RP is the only polytechnic that offers the Diploma in Marine Science & Aquaculture (DMAC), so I decided to secure my spot through the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP). The curriculum is quite similar to how it’s

like in secondary school, so the one-year programme was quite manageable. I made some really good friends through PFP too! The highlight of my RP life was my internship as a research assistant with the Asian School of the Environment (ASE) at Nanyang Technological University. The internship had more advanced academic requirements, so I was glad that my lecturers were there to offer advice – they even helped me practice for the interview. The internship completely exceeded my expectations. Not only was I able to go on field trips to collect data and

samples, as well as grow and test cultures in the lab, I was also trusted to lead projects. My Final Year Project (FYP): ‘Isolation and genomic characterisation of phytoplankton viruses in Singapore waters’ was a continuation of a project that I worked on with ASE during my internship. While it’s still an ongoing project, I’m proud that my research presentation won the top prize at the Young Marine Scientist Symposium. I am currently working as a research assistant with ASE, so I am very thankful to RP for the opportunities given!” #DiscoverRP

Arvind S/O Kalai Silvan Cloud DevOps Engineer at Aviva Diploma in Information Technology

School of Infocomm 2014 Graduate

“To be honest, my interest in information technology only developed after classes began. It was a brand new world of information for me, but the combination of modules and RP’s Problem-based Learning (PBL) approach was what kickstarted my passion for the subject.

I found the collaborative aspect of PBL especially enjoyable, even though engaging with different teammates was challenging for me at first. After a while, I realised that this was preparing us for the working world – adjusting to diverse working styles, learning to communicate effectively,

and solving problems with your team. I was able to apply these soft skills during my internship at a startup company. The work culture is very different as compared to larger organisations, so being able to recognise and adapt mindfully to how my boss, seniors and colleagues worked was beneficial for me. Plus, having to conduct over 400 presentations throughout my three years with RP has boosted my confidence in public speaking. Looking back, RP has provided me with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the workforce. Grab each opportunity that you’re given and make the best of it!”

School of Management and Communication 2015 Graduate

“I didn’t know what to expect when joining the pioneer batch of RP’s Diploma in Consumer Behavior & Research (DCBR), but it opened many doors for me. Back then, DCBR was directly affiliated to the marketing Interest Group, so that was when I had the opportunity to be involved with the committee. In my second year, I was nominated into the student council by my faculty, and by the 12

third, I was the president of the marketing committee. Being so involved in various IGs and activities made my campus life pretty colourful. By the time I left RP, my impression of it had changed completely. I was given many valuable opportunities to explore things that I would never have done otherwise. I was also offered an internship at Nielson, a global management and data analytics company, during my third year. That’s how

I landed back here once I graduated from university. DCBR equipped me with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the workplace. Even as an intern, I could easily translate what I learned in school to real-life situations. PBL has influenced how I approach not just work, but life too. I’ve learned to press pause, to analyse the situation and think of a solution, instead of reacting immediately.”

Selvaraj Pichamuthu Engineer (Aircraft Structures, Engineering Service Department) at ST Aerospace Services Co Pte Ltd Diploma in

Aerospace Engineering

School of Engineering 2013 Graduate

“I’ve always wanted to join the aerospace sector, and I knew that the Diploma in Aerospace Engineering (DAE) would get me closer to my goal. But RP did more than pave the way to my dream career; I also gained a new ‘family’ of lecturers and classmates. My lecturers were always willing to share their extensive knowledge and industry experience, even spending extra time to mentor us. Academics-wise, I found the PBL approach very effective. By the end of three years, I learned how to apply critical thinking to problemsolving and decision-making, which opened up room for more creative solutions. My internship with LiebherrAerospace Singapore was another highlight. There, I assisted the Quality Assurance department in tasks like developing standard operating procedures and test methods for new components and gained invaluable insights through the process!”

From tech startups to sports ventures, find out how RP promotes and nurtures entrepreneurial learning from three of our very own go-getters.

Why did you choose to join RP?

June Yong: Being a foreign student, I was looking for an opportunity to study in Singapore, and RP gave me that chance! Besides being excited about a different learning environment, RP’s Problem-based Learning (PBL) approach motivated me to study even harder. I was able to secure the Rose Marie Khoo Foundation Scholarship, and it was a proud moment for me.

Was entrepreneurship always your goal?

The idea of entrepreneurship only came after I joined the Supply Chain Challenge Competition. Inspired to find more solutions for real-world issues, my team and I started thinking of business ideas, and eventually launched our first few ventures. All of which came before CombineSell.

What was that process like for you?

It involved a lot of hard work and rejection, even before we made it to RP’s Business Incubation Centre (BIC). I approached my lecturerturned-mentor every week with a fresh idea (along with a 40-page business proposal), but he would turn it down. It took eight attempts before we were referred to BIC. My

first venture, a vending machine advertising concept, closed down within a few months. Then, we launched SolMerge, which bridged the gap between global inventors and the SouthEast Asian market. We marketed, sold and distributed the products across online marketplaces. It was growing well until we realised that we couldn’t compete against resellers bringing in similar items from China at much lower costs. It was an eyeopening experience that kickstarted CombineSell. Most of my teammates left after SolMerge, but we had a headstart from the knowledge, network and soft skills we gained in the process. Our first investor came through RP BIC!

What are some traits that entrepreneurs should possess?

Being humble and willing to listen to constructive criticism, as well as to react quickly. During our first meeting with one of our mentors, whom we’ve since hired, she told us bluntly that our initial business model for CombineSell would never work. We acted quickly on

Loh June Yong Founder & CEO at CombineSell Diploma in Supply Chain Management

School of Engineering 2017 Graduate

her input; reevaluating our business plan and redrafting our proposal. Thankfully, she gave us another opportunity. Even though it took several revisions, we were able to learn and improve CombineSell tremendously from this experience.

How did studying in RP give you an advantage? I gained many soft skills here, including leadership, critical thinking, and public speaking. I also had good exposure to the industry through RP’s many programmes and events. Plus, I had mentors who were willing to share

their expertise and guide me along, not to mention the support of BIC! When I first joined RP, I never dreamed that I would one day own a successful business. But I was able to build something better for myself because of the opportunities given here.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

Don’t be afraid to fail! I failed so many times, to the point where the rest of my team gave up. It’s common to face obstacles and challenges, but that will help you grow. Just stand up, improve yourself and try again. #DiscoverRP

started

Why did you choose to join RP? Joshua: I was drawn towards RP’s Diploma in Social Enterprise Management (DSEM) because of its emphasis on entrepreneurship and business. I’ve always been interested in entrepreneurship thanks to my parents, who owned their own business.

How have you benefited from RP’s unique learning system?

My time in RP has been quite a blessing. As someone who learns better with a hands-on approach, RP’s teaching pedagogy, imparted knowledge and valuable soft skills. Whether it’s effective communication, leadership or problem solving, these are realistic skillsets that give you an advantage when transitioning from education to the workforce. I’ve had many opportunities to learn, grow and improve consistently.

Your internship in Myanmar was one such opportunity. Tell us about it!

I’ve always had the intention of going for an overseas internship, so being able to intern at Unilever’s Homecare department in Myanmar was a dream come true. There, my primary duties were to create a digital marketing framework for their products and seek partnership opportunities with other Myanmar-based e-Commerce sites. I was able to gain insight into the inner workings of a 14

#DiscoverRP

multinational organisation. I also gained in-depth knowledge of marketing and advertising on a global scale. It was a challenging but memorable learning experience!

Your team emerged as the first runner-up in the Best Social Enterprise Business Idea Challenge with EASE. What was it like joining the competition? EASE is a chatbot service that matches user requests to relevant service or product providers. The initial concept was to develop an app that offers everything one might need; ride-hailing, food delivery and more, that would be integrated into the user’s lifestyle. But there already was a competitor offering similar services. So we changed EASE into a messaging platform instead, where consumers can easily text their needs to EASE, where it would then source for the cheapest and fastest alternative. It’s like a virtual assistant that focuses on services instead of day-today tasks. We weren’t able to fully develop EASE because of the hefty costs that would be involved. Instead, we created a prototype and a pitch of what EASE can do.

What were some of the challenges you faced?

A significant issue for EASE was its pricing, its revenue projections, and how feasible or sustainable this business would be. Striking a balance in this shared-economy concept which encompasses pricing services, incentive,

Joshua Tan Diploma in Social Enterprise Management (Now known as Diploma in Business)

and reward schemes was the biggest challenge – it’s still a work in progress.

Tell us about your mentors!

I’m very thankful for my mentors from DSEM. The lecturers here have vast experience and knowledge in the field, and I’m able to get advice on my ventures easily. They have challenged my ways, shaped my thinking, given me industry insights and helped me grow as an entrepreneur. The supportive mentor culture at RP is one advantage that students enjoy.

How has studying at RP given you a competitive edge?

Besides academics, my biggest takeaway from RP is a well-rounded skillset. I’ve developed strategic thinking capabilities, along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

What would you say to students who are thinking of joining RP?

If you want to gain handson experience and exposure in the field you’re interested in, then RP is where you should be!

Why did you choose to join RP?

Shaheed: I was from Singapore Sports School, and I entered RP’s Diploma in Sports & Leisure Management (DSLM) via the through-train programme. I chose DSLM because of its relevance to my interests. Plus, this gave me further flexibility to pursue an education and my athletic career.

Has entrepreneurship been a goal of yours?

Yes. Sports entrepreneurship has always been a dream of mine. I enjoy coaching as well, so I would like to open a tennis academy to train junior players for national levels and beyond in my post-athlete days.

What was the inspiration behind SportsMenu?

SportsMenu was created for my Final Year Project (FYP) by myself and two other classmates, who are

also national athletes. The idea for SportsMenu came when we realised many parents were signing their kids up for sports they might not enjoy. It becomes a waste of time, money and effort when they quit. There’s also the challenge of finding reliable coaches. SportsMenu allows kids the flexibility of trying a variety of sports to ensure the right fit before any commitment. Our platform then links them to our relevant sports academy partners, who are well-equipped with professional coaches and facilities. We currently have three programmes: ‘Starter Platter’, with eight different sports; ‘Ala-Carte’ offering mix-and-match options; and ‘Indulge’, a continuation for ‘Starter Platter’ graduates to help children take their sporting abilities to the next level.

How did DSLM and RP help you while developing SportsMenu?

I picked up essential communication and presentation skills, which helped to boost my confidence and credibility when meeting with clients and potential partners. It levels the playing field because there’s no fear or intimidation of being a young person speaking with industry veterans. Plus, from legal requirements to industry advice, our RP mentors from the School of Management and Communication, and School of Sports, Health and Leisure, gave us plenty of guidance.

How has business been so far?

It’s been going well! Aside from kids classes, we’ve done roadshows and sports displays. We’ve also run a few corporate programmes for employees and their families, and we’ll be expanding further into workplace health and wellness programmes.

What advice can you give to aspiring student-entrepreneurs?

Shaheed Alam Co-Founder of SportsMenu Diploma in Sports & Leisure Management (Now known as Diploma in Business)

Be prepared to learn lessons and life skills that go beyond textbooks. Have confidence in yourself, and trust your partners. A saying we learned was: “Don’t take criticism from people who you don’t go to for advice.” Ignore the noise and focus on your business!
