Seto Kae Wen, Avery James What do you enjoy most about RP? The schedule of my classes allows me to plan my cocurricular activities more efficiently. In my opinion, polytechnic students are currently in a “discovery” phase of their lives. The school system ensures that we are able to expand our knowledge in and out of school, cultivating a holistic lifestyle. What do you love about your course? Citing my Programme Chair, this course is preparation for what is known as a “sunrise industry”. The course is extremely niche, giving its students a bigger responsibility of being future representatives of the industry which, personally, is one of the things I love about the course.
What are some of the best moments you’ve experienced as an RP student? Having received awards for academic excellence affirms my effort towards my studies and encourages me to work even harder. Earlier this semester, I was presented the A*STAR Science Award (Polytechnic) – an award given to Singaporean Year 2 and 3 polytechnic students who demonstrate particularly strong aptitude and interest in mathematics and science. I am grateful for the recognition because I feel my perseverance has paid off!
Faith Yan Ning What do you love about your course? Honestly, I love everything about my course. Everyone, from my lecturers to my peers, have made my learning fun and interactive. The modules are interesting, challenging and relevant. I also like that we are able to go for field trips as our Programme Chair believes that such outdoor learning allows us to have first-hand experience. What are some of the best moments you’ve experienced as an RP student? Being able to learn with my friends on a daily basis are some of my best RP moments. I cherish the times when all of us are able to come together to learn and as a team, solve the various challenges we encounter. What advice would you give potential RP students? Enjoy the course as much as possible and do not be driven by grades as they do not define the extent of your knowledge. Learning can be pretty tough at times but as long as you persevere and have the willingness to constantly learn, you’ll be able to shine in what you do.
Nur Syarah Bte Mohamed Johan What do you love about your course? We’re like a close-knit family. The fact that everyone basically knows everyone in the course makes us all very comfortable and familiar with one another. Our lecturers are also very friendly and approachable, and they treat us like their own children. How has opportunities provided by RP enhanced your learning? I learn much better through hands-on learning than theory-based learning, therefore, it helps that I get a lot of opportunities to go on field trips to witness theory being applied in real life. What advice would you give potential RP students? It’s important to have friends to support you and make the days in class better. The field of science is challenging, so you need some friendly support. Studies are important, but so are the friendships you foster in class – so study smart and play hard!

Mr Chan Wei Loong Programme Chair Diploma in Marine Science and Aquaculture Why should prospective students join Diploma in Marine Science and Aquaculture (DMAC)? DMAC is a course filled with unique experiential learning opportunities – perfect for students who are self-motivated and looking to join a niche and specialised programme. If you love the great outdoors, enjoy the sun, sand and sea, care about the marine environment, are curious about the mystic ocean, and
would like to play a part in producing a sustainable source of food for your fellow countrymen, welcome on board DMAC! What do you hope for your students to achieve with this diploma? They should enjoy their learning, affirm their passion, follow their heart, and make a difference in reshaping the aquaculture industry. I hope that DMAC graduates will be at the forefront of sustainable food production.
Ms Junainah Badron Lecturer School of Applied Science What are some things you love about teaching in RP? I get to update my knowledge. For instance, when I was facilitating the oceanography module, I get to learn more about the oceans and its properties and topography, which I can then pass on to the students. I also love interacting with students and watching how they develop. It is heartwarming to watch them walk on stage during their Graduation Ceremony. In addition, teaching in RP allows me to learn from students. I have always believed that learning is like a two-way traffic. Hence, it is important that students are given ample opportunities to speak up, be it to contribute ideas or ask questions.

Lee Hsien Rong Samuel How has opportunities provided by RP enhanced your learning? I was able to be part of the Temasek Foundation SCALE (TF SCALE) – a student leadership exchange programme where I visited Cambodia to work on a project we planned in Singapore. I was exposed to many different activities, experiences and people!
Lee Jia Hao What do you enjoy most about PBL? The real enjoyment lies in the fact that learning is not just about tests and examinations. The knowledge gained through interactions and presentations provide useful insights in solving real world problems.
What do you enjoy most about Problem-based Learning (PBL)? PBL is very interactive! It gives us the opportunity to discuss ideas and queries freely in class, something I am really thankful for.
What are some of the best moments you’ve experienced as an RP student? It’s definitely meeting new friends through various events and camps! Friends are the best part of polytechnic life as they not only form an important part of your social life but are crucial in helping you in academics.
What advice would you give potential RP students? Pursue what you love. It sounds clichéd but doing this would give you another reason to work even harder and enjoy the process of learning.
What do you love about your course? We are able to go out for field trips to experience and learn. It is a really unique course and RP is the only local polytechnic that offers marine science and aquaculture.

Andrew
An avid basketball player, Andrew has been devoting his time to the sport and honing his skills since he was 13 years old. Now in RP, his involvement in the Basketball Interest Group has allowed him to develop his passion on another level, and also use it as an avenue to de-stress when academic work gets a little challenging. I love RP because… RP is very unique in the way lessons are conducted. With our small classes, it is easier to approach the lecturers. So I always make sure to make full use of my lesson time! Psst, here’s a little tip: Students in RP are graded daily, and that’s a good way to ensure that we focus and do consistently well in school. So, leverage on that and start your RP journey right.

The bond you create with other students makes group work more efficient and enjoyable, so making new friends can really help you do well!” I love RP because… Our learning environment is so enriching and fun, and I really look forward to going to school! Each day is different because we are tasked to solve different problems daily. I also like that the daily reflection journal helps to concretise the module objectives at the end of each day. The YEC supplements the business aspect of Deenisha’s Social Entrepreneuship Management diploma, and allows her to build up her portfolio and gain experience in planning and executing events. I love RP because… The daily group work allows me to collaborate with others hence preparing me well for the industry. I also like that PBL trains us to think out-of-the-box to tackle the problem handed to us each day. Choose this CCA if you want to... Proactively improve the lives of others! The community work I do with the YEC constantly motivates me to do my best in this area.

Not only has the PBL system turned Bo Bo into a confident learner, he has also enjoyed the lively campus atmosphere in RP. When asked what his favourite thing about RP is, Bo Bo shared, “RP offers students plenty of opportunities to embark on overseas learning trips to enhance their learning. Last year, I visited Penang for a student learning trip and Siem Reap for a service learning trip. At the end of the year, I will be going to Taipei for a student overseas trip.” I love RP because… The PBL system allows every student to develop self-directed learning – its real-life problem-solving method also trains students to be work-ready. Psst, here are some tips for you: Attend the orientation camp to make new friends, meet seniors and mentors. Once you start school, keep an open mind and always be eager to learn!

Psst, here’s a little tip: There’s a café in the library where you can play darts and pool with your friends after class – pretty cool! In terms of schoolwork, don’t be shy to ask for reference material from your seniors.

Having enrolled in the Diploma in Marine Science and Aquaculture, she looks forward to learning how she can contribute to the conservation of marine life. I love RP because… Classes are small and more attention is given to each student during lessons! I also look forward to school every day because of my classmates – they make learning a real joy. What’s in my bag? I have my writing materials, water bottle to keep myself hydrated and a jacket – this comes in handy when it gets really cold in class!

Fengxiang is in RP’s Dragonboat Interest Group and when not in class, he spends his time at the Sports Complex! for its excellent facilities. I love RP because… It provides a platform that allows me to excel both academically and in other areas of my life. What was it like working and living in another country?
What did you enjoy about working in Myanmar?
It was an unforgettable learning experience! Initially, it was quite terrifying as I was taken out of my comfort zone, but making new friends and adapting to a whole new culture was not as difficult as I thought. As Maldives is separated into many individual islands, travelling to the capital can be quite a challenge, but I learned to plan ahead for my off days to get to Male with my friends to shop and chill out!
I enjoyed working with my Burmese colleagues – they were always ready to offer help and are very open to new ideas. There were also a lot of factors I learnt to be mindful of when working in a foreign country – the different working culture, availability of resources and religious considerations. Reflecting back on my journey, the experience had certainly broadened my perspectives.
Although the initial thought of working in another country was pretty nerve-wrecking, I’m glad I went ahead with it. I gained valuable insights in the aviation industry and was exposed to different divisions such as human resources, airport operations and commercial services.

It had to be earning myself the silver badge which is only awarded to full time staff for good service! I was pleasantly surprised! It came after my Clinic Manager informed me that I received a compliment from a patient’s relative. That certainly encouraged me to work even harder to provide patients with a good experience when they visit the centre. How has RP helped you prepare for your internship? Many modules I took in RP were very useful, allowing me to apply what I had learned. For example, the Patient Care module covered the method of measuring blood pressure, which enabled me to perform the task easily during my internship. I was also able to grasp information better and quicker during my training. In addition, the mandatory Pre-Internship Programme helped me be better prepared for my internship!

The brainstorming, research and presentations I had done in my daily classes helped prepare me well for my internship. With the vast research and practices in my classes, I was able to confidently take on projects and assignments during my internship.
The internship has taught me a lot about the setbacks that I might encounter while working – especially for someone without prior industry experience and one who aspires to be a researcher. My most memorable moment was when our proof of concept worked! The feeling of relief and exhilaration overwhelmed me when the prototype finally worked after countless failures. My internship was also a continuation of my final year project, so I learnt a lot about the subject matter that I researched on. Why do you think students should make RP their first choice? RP equips students with comprehensive learning skills. The most important thing that I learned at RP is the significance of always upgrading my knowledge. Although the modules I learned taught me the technical aspects of my research, I had to learn new theories and apply them as I worked on my project and during my internship.

I attended the RP internship talks, which were very informative – covering on what to expect during the internship, how to dress for work, how to give good impressions and most importantly, how to pass an interview. To Sir (and Ma’am), with Love
Ling Siew Hui Lecturer School of Engineering
The teaching journey is not an easy one, but one that rewards and enriches lives. Find out why RP students love their lecturers.
Kenny Low
“I like that RP is very experimental. We are unafraid to make changes in our processes to improve the overall quality of our education.” How has your teaching experience with PBL been? Students may not know this, but Problem-based Learning (PBL) allows the lecturers to learn from their students as well. I often get such great insights from my students that I would incorporate in my materials for future classes. PBL is a fascinating way to learn, but there is a caveat: students have to be self-motivated and develop a genuine interest for acquiring knowledge.
Kenny Low Lecturer School of Management and Communication
How do you keep your lessons fun and engaging? I would love to think that it’s my riveting good looks, but it’s probably due to my self-depreciating sense of humour instead. In your opinion, what makes RP students industry ready? RP students are great team players because they have to work in teams in almost all their modules. Going on internships also broadens their industry perspective.
Ling Siew Hui
“I believe in assisting students to take ownership in their learning, as this will help them in their lifelong learning journey.” How do you feel about your teaching experience in RP? I am grateful for the opportunity to play an integral role in our students’ learning journey. I am also very proud of the many graduates who have progressed very well after graduating from RP. Why should potential students consider RP as their choice of tertiary institute? RP’s PBL exposes students to diversified problems. With a peer coaching environment, students are encouraged to be self-directed in their learning. The many variations in the day’s lessons allow students to experience how classes can be conducted differently. As I always believe, “the only constant is change”. RP’s dynamic environment will allow learners to be HRCC lifelong learners (Happy, Responsible, Cooperative and Confident).

Gavin Low
“I want to contribute to the theatre industry by training and imparting the right values to the future theatre practitioners entering the industry.” How has your teaching experience with PBL been? I really enjoyed teaching using PBL. PBL is student-centred, so the lecturers really try to get to understand the students’ level of understanding, and from there, we try to guide them to achieve the lesson outcome of the day. The result is that we have a lot more interaction time and opportunity with our students. And we get to know them better, compared to the traditional style of teaching. Share with us your tips and tricks on keeping your students motivated and inspired to do well. Let’s just say you will have to attend my class to find out! However, I will say this – Having been from the theatre industry, my lessons tend to be more… ‘theatrical’. Enough said.
Tee Chee Hoo
“Treat students as adults, respect them and always be there for them.” What do you like best about RP as an institution? I like that PBL is student-centric and they are able to solve realworld problem rather than just pure knowledge input. In your opinion, what makes RP students industry ready? The skill sets they develop in the PBL environment helps them a lot. Also the Industry Immersion Programme (IIP) is a really good way to prepare them for the industry once they graduate. Why should potential students consider RP as their choice of tertiary institute? If you are looking at a different approach to gain knowledge, and aspire to be industry ready when you graduate, this should be your top choice.

“If there is silence in my class, I always act as a catalyst by asking relevant questions.”
Tan Kok Cheng Programme Chair School of Infocomm
Teresa Shiu Kar Mun Lecturer School of Sports, Health and Leisure
When did you decide to become a lecturer, and why did you choose RP? From a very young age, it has been my lifelong dream to teach. This passion for teaching was sparked by my mother who was a teacher herself. I am a strong believer of “selfdirected learning” which was instilled in me during the years I spent in research. RP’s pedagogy gears students in selfdirected learning to find their own answers. This is one of the reasons why I chose RP to pursue my career. How do you keep your lessons fun and engaging? I design different learning activities based on the topic of discussion. I use games, gallery walk, online quizzes to add variety. Occasionally, students are given the ownership to come up with exciting ideas of presenting their works.
Tan Kok Cheng
“We have to make sure we provide students with the right level of support.” In your opinion, what makes RP students industry ready? Based on the feedback that we have received from the IIP companies, RP students are rated well in their communication skills and teamwork. Personally, I feel that the PBL approach has trained students to be more independent. How do you keep your lessons fun and engaging? I will try to inject real-life scenarios that the students can relate to in the lesson content. For example, for the lesson on using location services and maps for the iPad programming module, we discuss how these technologies are used in game development like ‘Pokémon GO’. Why should potential students consider RP as their choice of tertiary institute? RP offers many courses covering different industries and domains – potential students will be able to find a course that matches their interests. We also have many interest groups (IG) with exciting activities!
Teresa Shiu Kar Mun
“I like that the small class size allows teaching staff to have close interaction with the students.” How has your teaching experience with PBL been? It has been eye-opening! PBL encourages students to think out of the box and what they discover through this learning process often goes way beyond my expectations. Why should potential students consider RP as their choice of tertiary institute? Challenge yourself with a fresh way of learning. What you will gain far exceeds what textbooks or lecture notes can offer. You will learn how to manage team dynamics through group work, hone your presentation and public speaking skills, problemsolve, and think critically and creatively. These are the traits and skills required by employers who look beyond contentbased knowledge.
