9:45am

It’s a bright sunny day and I am ready for my laboratory lesson today! It’s going to be fun!

9:30am

This week, our problem statement requires us to develop methods and demonstrate the preparation of media and reagents for culturing cells. Dr Bhalla guides each team to ensure that we are clear on what to do!

10:00am - 10:30am Time to put on our lab coats! Before collecting all the necessary materials we need, my team and I had a short discussion and did some calculations to ensure that we are on the right track. We then shared our findings and asked Dr Bhalla some questions before proceeding with the experiment.

In the laboratory, I get myself ready for the lesson and wait for our facilitator, Dr Ritu Bhalla, to recap last week’s lesson with us. Hmmm, it’s so cool to work with such chemicals!

Here we are collecting everything we need for our experiment! I can’t wait to start the experiment! This is going to be fun!

We first start out by measuring the materials to make sure that we have the right quantity to make the medium!

Next, we add distilled water into our medium to get the right volume!

Then, we proceed to mix all the products together and voila, we achieve the red medium for the cell growth!

11:10am - 11:40am

Finally, I take the medium to the pH meter to check that we have the right pH value for our medium. Check the machine out! Isn’t it cool? And this marks the end of our laboratory session too!

12:00pm - 1:00pm

11:40am - 12:00pm Back in class, my team and I discuss further and finish up our presentation slides.

Got to keep my hands steady...

1:00pm - 2:15pm

After all the presentations, Dr Bhalla then goes through with us the 6th Presentation (6P) which offers the suggested solution for today’s problem before ending the class.

Time for lunch! My friends and I decide to eat at the Art Bites café in TRCC! The food is simply delicious!

After two teams, it’s finally our turn to present! I can’t wait to share our presentation with the class! Here I am explaining my slide to Dr Bhalla.

Wow! A great and productive day indeed! It is time for our final-year project meeting at the Library. Hmm, in that case, I will also finish up my Reflection Journal, Quiz and Evaluation before leaving school. Goodbye!

About the Student After three years of being in RP, Ong Wei Jun, Dan, shared that choosing RP was one of the best decisions he has ever made. “RP has helped me in my studies and also provided guidance for my future. My friends, facilitators, mentor and programme chair have given me a lot of good advice. I am what I am today because of them.” Dan feels that the class discussions and interactions are the best thing about the PBL system, as this has enabled him to learn and exchange ideas with his peers. “The discussions in class broaden our perspective on the problem assigned to us and allow us to think from different viewpoints.” Throughout his years in RP, Dan has seen himself transformed into an independent, mature and confident individual with a ‘never give up’ attitude. When asked why others should join RP, he says, “RP’s PBL system trains students to not only to study hard but also study smart to be creative, innovative, have initiative, technically competent and to give the best in all they do. This is what companies and organisations are looking for.”

What's PBL ?

RP offers a holistic educational experience through various innovative teaching approaches, leveraging the fundamentals of Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Guided by trained facilitators, students work in teams to solve problems and present viable solutions to their peers. This way, problem-solving process skills and teamwork are developed on a daily basis through smallgroup collaboration. Such PBL sessions provide immense value to our students, as they prepare them to take on the challenges they will potentially face in the real working world.

PBL Workshops for secondary school students

About the Facilitator Prior to joining RP, Dr Ritu Bhalla did her postdoctoral research in established institutions such as the Nanyang Technological University and at the Temasek Lifescience Laboratory. Having been in RP for four years, Dr Bhalla enjoys teaching RP students as the PBL system enables her to interact closely with her students. She also proudly mentions that industry partners have commended RP students for being inquisitive and are great problem-solvers as they tend to exercise independence before asking for help.

WORLD! RP believes in making the world a classroom for its students. Here, we share how RP provides students with great opportunities to experience the world to gain global exposure and to pick up valuable life skills. @ Science Museum, Hong Kong

WHERE: Hong Kong WHO: School of Applied Science A trip to Hong Kong proved to be more than just about food and shopping for students from the School of Applied Science (SAS). To better understand how research is conducted there, the students visited the medical and laboratory research facilities at the University of Hong Kong and at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Prince of Wales Hospital. Moreover, the students even witnessed the demonstrations of sustainable agriculture and environmental biotechnology at

@ The Museum of Mahatma Ghandi, India

Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Low-Carbon House which enabled them to gain an appreciation of their role in promoting science education, conservation and biodiversity in Hong Kong. Surely an eye-opening experience for all, the team also went to food companies like Watsons Water and Ajisen Ramen to learn more about the company’s manufacturing facilities, the technologies used in preparing different food products and more! WHERE: Batam, Indonesia WHO: School of Applied Science Partnered with Citramas Foundation, the SAS’s trip to Batam was aimed at teaching RP students about providing service to the less fortunate. There, the SAS students ran basic health screenings for around 275 villagers and promoted Public Health Awareness to them through brochures and workshops on the importance of oral and personal hygiene. Visiting a total of nine schools over the span of four days, the trip proved to be beneficial for the students as they managed to learn a lot. “Overall, I found this trip very meaningful for me and it gave me an eye-opening experience of the people and their cultures. If I am given another opportunity to experience it again, I will definitely go for it, shared one of the students.

WHERE: Cambodia WHO: Photo IG On a mission to engage in an International Service Learning Project, a group of Photo IG members travelled to Cambodia! There, they were tasked to paint a mural on the wall of the PreSchool and also to document Cambodian village environment, their lifestyle and their daily meals. The team also visited the Build Your Future Today Centre (BFT), which is a learning centre and homestay for the orphans and poor children. At BFT, the members had the privilege to teach the children photography, arts, English and some computer skills. It was undoubtedly a good trip filled with memorable memories and efforts for a good cause!

of Mahatma Ghandi where they learnt of his selfless contributions to the world! It was the trip to an orphanage-rescue home that made the students more appreciative of their surroundings as they interacted with children through games and drawing books, and understood their unfortunate plight. Through this trip, the students not only experienced the high-life in India but also witnessed the simple lifestyle the locals have and that taught them life lessons on valuing simplicity, and in cherishing what they have.

WHERE: Seoul, Korea

WHO: School of Hospitality It was all smiles for the Diploma in Integrated Events Management students when they were given the opportunity to experience the hospitality industry in the land of K-pop, Korea. Oh, did we mention that these students were also on the same flight as Wonder Girls and JJ Project? Despite the short span of only five days, the trip enabled them to visit a variety of destinations. These included some of Seoul’s hotels where they learned all about setting the standard rooms

and suites apart, along with how meeting facilities are catered to the needs of their guests. They were also lucky enough to visit Gyeonggi University, where they were led around their campus to check out their facilities! To provide themselves with a glimpse of the events held there such as the FIDC Engineering 2012 and the Korean Food Service Fair, the students visited KINTEX and COEX – the event hubs of Seoul that boasts a wealth of experience in hosting world-class events. Who can forget shopping? The students visited two of Seoul’s shopping havens - Myeongdong and Dongdaemun which sells everything from cosmetics, apparel to high-end brands.

KINTEX Event Hub @ Korea

WHERE: Hyderabad, India WHO: School of Engineering To discover how the world-class airports are designed, planned and operated, a group of 20 School of Engineering (SEG) students from the Diploma in Civil Aviation visited Hyderabad as part of their study trip. Hosted by a team at the GMR Group, one of the leading companies in the aviation industry that develops and operates airports with international standards, the students visited various operational and engineering departments such as the Airport Operations Command Centre, Fuel Farm, and Airport Fire Fighting and Rescue and Command at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The students even had the glorious

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport @ India opportunity to meet with the senior management team to gain insights to the aviation industry! The highlight of the trip was when the students had the chance to witness a demonstration of the air traffic management simulators and equipment used to train Air Traffic Control operators and staff. “Being able to experience a further insight into Hyderabad’s airport operational standards was great! Also, I managed to experience Hyderabad’s culture and history which was an eye-opening experience indeed since it’s not available in Singapore,” shared one of the students. DISCOVER

JONATHAN KHNG TZU-LI My experience as an RP student… Diploma in Outdoor and was a fruitful and enriching journey towards Adventure Learning my career path as I had access to a wide School of Sports, Health and Leisure range of facilities and up-to-date equipment to 2011 Graduate train on. My facilitators were also constantly Occupation: Instructor, Outward Bound Singapore challenging me to go beyond what I thought I was capable of, at times beyond what the syllabus was taught and that made my experience memorable.

RP has led me to my dream job… I was lucky to have been selected by my facilitators to spend a semester in Outward Bound Hong Kong as a seasonal instructor for my internship. The time spent there, working with people from different countries and learning their approach to different methods in facilitating students in the outdoors has undoubtedly given me the edge in being an outdoor educator locally. I made a right choice by joining RP… as it was the only polytechnic that offered me a diploma that allowed me to be certified in a job I am passionate in, which was to be an outdoor educator. I felt I have not only made the right choice but the best choice in choosing to join RP. PBL comes in handy in my job because… it is useful in my thought process and the way I go about learning and acquiring new skills. At the same time, it makes me more aware of how certain policies or protocols are being implemented in my current organisation, wondering from time to time if there is a need for a change or improvement about the way things are. PBL has widened my perspective about things and allows me to think from many perspectives. My experience as an RP student… was a great one! I am very proud to say I was a student of Republic Polytechnic. In the past three years, I have learnt a lot from RP and have made many great friends.

VINOSHINI D/O ACHINAN Diploma in Aerospace Engineering School of Engineering 2012 Graduate Occupation: Trainee Technician, Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection Station

RP has led me to my dream job… because of the working experience I have gained through my Final Year Project and internship that had helped me to adapt to the working world easily. The hands-on lessons that I had in the lab served as fundamental knowledge for my current work, such that I am now able to understand the basic theories behind my job easily. I am extremely thankful to RP as I got my current job based on my facilitators’ recommendations!

I made a right choice by joining RP… as we followed a different style of learning here, which allowed me to perform better while discovering my strengths and weaknesses. I have also developed sound communication and presentation skills! PBL comes in handy in my job because… I am able to cooperate and work well with my teammates at work. Thanks to PBL, I am also never hesitant to ask them questions when I’m in doubt.

My experience as an RP student… has definitely left a big impact on me as an individual. My involvement in the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) industry through internships and community involvement programmes in RP gave me an idea of how it felt like to be working in this industry even before joining the working world. RP has led me to my dream job… as I am still happily working with the company that I did my internship in during my final year at RP. The company has in fact given me opportunities to travel abroad when organising and managing conferences! I made a right choice by joining RP… as throughout my three years in RP, and even after graduation, I would like to thank RP for giving me the opportunity to get closer to the MICE industry. I have never looked back or doubted for even a second for choosing RP and taking the diploma of my choice. PBL comes in handy in my job because… it has assisted me to be able to think on my feet and resolve problems. Having to present findings or solutions during my time in RP, I have to say that I am now comfortable when doing presentations to my clients who are mostly professionals in the medical field.

NG LONG QUAN Diploma in Materials Science School of Applied Science 2012 Graduate Occupation: Process Technician, Shell Chemicals Seraya

My experience as an RP student… was amazing, simply because I am able to apply what I’ve learned in RP into my real life. RP has led me to my dream job… especially when it comes to working in a team and communicating with one another as that is an important aspect of my job. I’m glad I’ve acquired those skills in RP! I made a right choice by joining RP… because I’ve grown to be more mature and am a confident speaker now! If given the chance to go through poly life again, or if I was the top O-Level scorer, I would still choose RP as my first choice. PBL comes in handy in my job because… I need to know the specifications of the equipment. Hence, with PBL, I am able to extract all the information I know from the drawings and get the answers I need.

Dear RP...

Do you have burning questions about RP or are just unsure about certain things? Don't worry; our counsellors are here to help!

heard that PBL requires us to do Q I've presentations daily? I am usually shy

and tend to have stage fright. Will I be able to adapt to PBL easily?

A

While Problem-Based Learning (PBL) requires daily presentations, grades are also awarded based on teamwork, class participation and submission of individual Reflection Journal (RJ). We understand that it is not easy for many students to stand in front of their fellow classmates to make presentations and it can be daunting but as with any new experience, we can all ‘grow’ or adapt to it if we keep an open mind. Students are also encouraged to approach their facilitators, mentors, as well as counsellors who will help ease their concerns. Helpful tips: 1. Write out a script of what you want to say in your presentation. 2. Mentally rehearse it or role-play it with your team mate. 3. Anticipate questions that may be asked and how you would answer them.

from a low-income family and we Q I'm can't afford the course fees. Are there

any financial schemes that I can apply as an RP student?

A

Students who are faced with financial difficulties and who meet the eligibility criteria (i.e. Singapore Citizens with Gross Household per Capital Income of less than $1700) are encouraged to apply for bursary to help defray their living expenses. In addition, there are also Needy Student Funds (Student Pocket Money and Student Emergency Money) to help students with financial difficulties in coping with their schooling expenses (i.e. food and transport) and emergency situations at home. To find out more information, students can email help-student@rp.edu.sg

kind of industrial attachments Q What does RP provide its students with? Is this opportunity given to all students?

A

Yes, all RP students have the opportunity to do industrial attachment (also known as internship). Internship is designed to help students gain valuable work and industry experience. It provides students with the opportunity to immerse in a real work environment and to apply relevant skills and knowledge acquired from the school. Students are usually attached to the relevant industry for a period of 16 to 24 weeks in their third year of study. Some of these internships may also be in the form of project collaboration with companies.

Q

I'm aware that RP offers Freshmen Scholarships and I am keen to apply. What are the eligibility criteria and where can I find more information?

A

RP Freshmen Scholarships are open to all newly enrolled students who are/have: Singapore Citizen Outstanding GCE O-Level / Higher Nitec results Excellent co-curricular activities achievements Strong leadership qualities

You can find out more information about RP Scholarships via our website at www.rp.edu.sg/scholarship or email us at help-scholarship@rp.edu.sg

of my friends shared that there Q Some are no exams in RP. Is that true?

A

Republic Polytechnic practices a modular system of education and assessment. Over the semester, you will take five modules, each of which consists of 15 one-day problems; on any one day. Therefore, you will only tackle one problem. Your final grade for each module will depend on two things: your daily performance at working on the module’s 15 problems, and three Understanding Tests taken at different points during the semester. The three Understanding Tests, which you will take over the course of the module, consist of a variety of questions that will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of key concepts as outlined in the module’s learning objectives.

Q

Junior College or Polytechnic? I'm torn between the two! Can I still get into university after poly?

A

This is a question that many students (past and present) have asked themselves while deciding their future. And ultimately, whichever route you decide on, it all boils down to your preference. Both routes are designed for people who want to pursue different things. What is important is that you’ve truly learned new skills and gained the most out of the two or three years in the respective institutions. With the Singapore Government preparing to set aside more university places for polytechnic students, there will

definitely be opportunities for you to get into a university upon graduating should you meet the mark. Many RP graduates have been accepted in prestigious universities, both locally and overseas. For more information, you can refer to RP Further Studies link at www.rp.edu.sg/Further_Studies.aspx

Q

What happens if I get enrolled in a course in RP that is not of my interest? Will I be able to change my course?

A

All students are expected to complete the course in which they are enrolled in. Nevertheless, under exceptional circumstances, students may request for a course transfer, which may be allowed if there are vacancies. However, students will not be allowed to transfer to any course if they do not meet the relevant cut-off points or other entry requirements of the course.

Q

I don't have many friends and to work with different people in teams can be intimidating for me. I do not want to be labelled as anti-social or a loner. Help!

A

It takes time to make friends and it takes a lot to get along with others. First and foremost, you are in a class and will be working with your teammates or group mates for the common purpose of learning and solving the day’s problem. Under RP’s PBL method, the learning is interactive and collaborative. The facilitators will help to facilitate the learning by asking questions and providing resources. Students are encouraged to engage in class discussions and teamwork. Friendships among students do develop from class or group interactions, depending on interests and personality. Helpful tips: 1. Try to focus your communication on the discussion topics 2. Mutually respect the views of one another professionally 3. You have a right to an opinion and a right to express it About Student Career Services RP Student Career Services helps students discover their true potential, experience a transformed development journey and be equipped with relevant career skills to achieve their dreams and aspirations.
