Is that an aeroplane in RP?
2
Yes, that’s right! The 300 kg aircraft parked at North Agora belongs to the School of Engineering((SEG). With many similarities to the Boeing 787, this masterpiece was assembled by six of our very own students from the Diploma in Aerospace Engineering!
• Nai Dan wears black and white printed top, blue leather jacket, both by River Island. Purple satchel bag, pink beaded bracelets, pink beaded necklace with feathers, all by New Look. Purple leggings, stylist’s own. • Shahrul wears blue striped T-shirt, washed denim shirt, grey cardigan, all by River Island. Denim jeans by Pull and Bear. Old Skool camouflage backpack by Vans. Red G-shock watch by Casio. Assorted black leather bracelets by 77th Street. Spectacles, socks and bow tie, stylist’s own.
Think beauty and brains don’t mix? Meet six awesome students that bust the myth! They boast excellent GPA scores above 3, and are active in pursuing their passions and Student Life Activities. Check out how they juggle their time to have them all.
As long as I balance my time well between work and play, I believe that I will still be able to score good grades!
Mohammad Shahrul Nizam Bin Shahrudin A Year 2 Game Design student from the School of Technology for the Arts, Shahrul enjoys drawing, collecting comics, and playing games, of course! The Student Council member’s interest in sports also prompted him to join the Sports Club. Study Tip #1 – Listen in class and be attentive so you know what’s happening. That way, you will have more ideas to share during class discussions.
Study Tip #2 – If you’re unsure about a particular topic in class, read up on it on related websites or books and you’ll be amazed at how much it can help boost your understanding of the issue. Or, you could also ask your friends for help!
Zhang Nai Dan
An Integrated Events Management student from the School of Hospitality, Nai Dan is part of Marketing Interest Group (IG), which gave her a chance to travel to Shanghai with other members to gain an on-site experience of the industry’s environment and culture over there. The Year 2 student enjoys travelling and shopping. Study Tip #1 – Besides just reading books and understanding theories, it is important that you know how to apply what you’ve learnt for your assignments and Understanding Tests.

Learn to prioritise your schedule based on what is important to you. I’ll always put my studies f irst and try not to let anything affect it. Sven Ng Boon Yee A Pharmaceutical Sciences student from the School of Applied Science, Sven flaunts a passion for fashion as well as weightlifting. The third-year student enjoys weightlifting as it enables him to challenge himself and go beyond his own limits. A motivated individual, Sven believes that the key to getting good grades is practice and more practice! Study Tip #1 – Don’t force yourself to memorise everything. Instead, try to highlight the key points and write notes as this will help to jog your memory when the time comes. Study Tip #2 – Use analogies when possible to deepen your understanding on the subject matter.
Study Tip #3 – Always know when is the right time to study, and when is the right time to play too!
Jocelyn Ng Guat Ting
A goal-driven netballer, Jocelyn is in the Netball IG and she has participated in major competitions! In her free time, the third-year Sports and Leisure Management student from the School of Sports, Health and Leisure enjoys training at the gym and shopping. Study Tip #1 – Your facilitator will recommend some reading materials before class each week, so be sure to read up on them to be prepared! You should also participate in class discussions, share ideas with your classmates and ask questions. Be confident and practice to perfect your presentations.
Study Tip #2 – Review your Reflection Journals to help you keep track of what you have learnt in class. Study Tip #3 – Categorise your daily ‘problems’ according to the different modules you’re taking as it will make it easier to revise for your Understanding Tests.
We have limited time to do certain activities in the day. So it’s important to manage our time well in order to have enough time to rest, revise and spend quality time with friends and family.

Not sure what you need to bring to RP? Here’s a list of items you won’t be able to live without – and some you might want to consider keeping at home!
Jackets
You may love the air-con but after long hours in class, the cold may get to you. It’s best to bring along a jacket!
Thumb Drive
Thumb Drives can be real lifesavers especially when you need to transfer your presentation slides over to your group mates!
No matter how good the battery life of your laptop is, it most certainly won’t last for eight hours straight in class!

If you’re thinking of stocking up on stationery supplies before the semester begins, STOP! You won’t even need a pencil case as almost everything is done online at our paperless campus. BUT, it’s always good to carry around a pen, in case you need to jot down notes on-the-go.
Mobile Broadband
Thanks to RP’s campus-wide wireless Internet connection, you can leave the dongle at home, too.

An Eventful Journey
Jerome Chew
The Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) Scholarship was the icing on the cake for Jerome Chew, who was already pursuing his six-month internship at RWS when he received the wonderful news. Worth $4,000, the scholarship went a long way in motivating the Year 3 Diploma in Integrated Events Management student. “I did not do so well in school when I was younger. But when I entered RP, I immersed myself in my studies and constantly improved. This scholarship has made me realise I can do so much more,” says Jerome. The star student was awarded the scholarship for being a well-rounded student who is both eloquent and academically-driven. “Interning as a scholar has helped me become a more assertive leader,” he added. In fact, Jerome’s excellent performance during his internship enabled him to take on the role of a VIP tour guide, which is rare for a non-permanent staff.
Sheereen Loke
The Adventure of a Lifetime! Hard work and self-belief paid off for Sheereen Loke, who won the Outward Bound Singapore Scholarship. The Diploma in Outdoor and Adventure Learning final-year student was given an incredible opportunity to participate in a four-month internship at Outward Bound Hong Kong, where she assisted in the programmes while picking up valuable skills from the instructors there. Despite being far away from home, Sheereen was prepared for all the possible challenges that lay ahead and knew that she had to embrace every opportunity that came her way. “Being a scholar does not mean you get to do all the ‘cool’ stuff. Sometimes, you need to be receptive to administrative work and simple things like cleaning the equipment store,” she shares. A fruitful experience indeed, Sheereen’s Hong Kong stint has enhanced her drive and work ethic as someone who gives nothing but the best in all she does. “I wasn’t the best student back in secondary school. I saw myself grow in RP and getting this scholarship meant that I pushed myself to my personal best,” she says.

Passion sure does take you to places and Syamil Siddiq is a fine example. The third-year student from the Diploma in Civil Aviation was doubly excited to secure the Air Line Pilots Association Singapore (ALPA-S) Scholarship as well as secure an internship with Changi Airport Group, which was something he had always wanted. “Being part of the Changi Airport Group, an organisation that manages the world’s most awarded airport, has definitely been an eye-opener for me,” he comments. Thanking RP for the confidence it has instilled in him, Syamil performed the role of a Changi Youth Ambassador commendably during his internship, doing his part to assist passengers and visitors in having a stress-free experience at the airport. “The experience of presenting day in, day out in school has developed my excellent communication skills, which was useful as the skills helped me to perform my job,” he says. Indeed, Syamil’s rewarding scholarship and internship experiences have reinforced his determination to succeed in his area of interest.
StarFacilitators!
FacilitatorsSpotlight
With their impressive corporate backgrounds and credentials, these two outstanding facilitators play a vital role in students’ transformation during their time at RP.
mr grain baysa-pee
6 years with rp school of sports, health and leisure (shl) Prior to joining RP in 2005, Mr Grain Baysa-Pee worked as a teacher in the University of Philippines and later as litigation lawyer with Baker & McKenzie in the Philippines. Currently a full-time facilitator at RP’s School of Sports, Health and Leisure (SHL), Mr Grain Baysa-Pee is also the Programme Chair for the new Diploma in Sports Coaching, and plays a mentoring role to his fellow facilitators in SHL to assist them in finding new teaching approaches. With his enthusiasm and excellent portfolio, he’s a deserving winner of several awards including RP’s in-house ‘Outstanding Facilitator Award’ in 2010. RP nurtures students differently from other tertiary institutions by… Putting in a lot of effort to really know the students both inside and outside the classrooms. Due to the small size of classes, there is a high level of interaction between students and facilitators, which ensures that no learning opportunity is missed. The vibrant Interest Group and Creative Engagement activities also provide students with plenty of opportunities to build their character and interests. PBL is a teaching tool that… Ensures students learn not only to pass an exam but also to solve real problems and “defend” their solutions. My law background… Enables me to use real examples in my Sports and Leisure Related Law class to help students appreciate why they need to understand some legal principles.
mr juraimi jumahat

transform
Before joining RP’s School of Technology for the Arts (STA), Mr Juraimi Jumahat honed his design skills over a period of 12 years while working in various industries. His achievements include designing corporate identities for the Singapore Police Force and Creative Technology Ltd, where his position as Art Director saw him responsible for the management of the company’s advertising campaigns right across the Asia Pacific region. As a Senior Academic Staff in the Diploma in New Media, he’s able to share the experience he amassed over the course of his career with students in areas related to his professional background. The modules Mr Juraimi Jumahat teaches include “Fundamentals of Design” and “Graphic Design”.
16
RP nurtures students differently from other tertiary institutions by… Encouraging students to explore their original ideas, analyse their creative processes, and be confident when communicating with others. RP students are expected to solve critical problems effectively, every day. These kinds of experiences help students become both independent and resourceful when getting the job done. But best of all, RP students
are confident and effective when communicating their ideas with others, thanks to our approach. Being a true believer of Problem-based Learning, I know that students will understand more when engaged in practical hands-on tasks. We groom our students so that the industry can be confident that they are ready to handle real-life problems, both now and well into the future. I make my classes interesting by... Sharing and discussing the mistakes real life designers make when working in the commercial world! This approach engages my students who are exposed to the real world, making class more relevant and fun for them. My past corporate experiences... Guide me in everything I do. I reflect on my experience when mentoring my students, encouraging them to do more and helping them make good decisions that will affect their life over the long term. I have gained a lot from working in the creative industries, both here in Singapore, and in the global market as well. I want to share my experience with the next generation of professionals so that they can get a head start in life.

Curious Is industrial attachment compulsory for all courses? What is the duration for the internships?
It’s good to know that you’re already thinking a few steps ahead! Currently, industrial attachment is not compulsory for all courses. As for the duration, internship programmes may range between 4 and 24 weeks but it varies for different Schools/Centres. For more information, visit www.rp.edu.sg/internship/contactus

Everyone in RP seems so friendly and sociable! But I’m very shy and I’m afraid I’ll not be able to mix well with my new classmates. I don’t want to feel left out. What can I do?
It’s okay to feel this way because it’s always difficult coming into a new environment, meeting new people and looking for a social group where we feel comfortable. But don’t worry, once you’ve broken out of your comfort zone, you’ll realise that it’s not hard to mingle at all! Here are some tips to help you through this:
• Try taking the first step by establishing contact with others.
nker i h T d r a Forw
• Practice talking to one new person daily.
Of course! Many polytechnic graduates have landed in prestigious local and overseas universities so don’t worry – polytechnic education not only trains you to be a competent worker but also prepares you for your degree programme. In fact, one of the benefits of having a polytechnic diploma is that it may provide you with one to two years’ exemption when you enrol in relevant degree programmes in local or overseas universities.
• If establishing one-on-one contact makes you nervous,
try voicing out from within a group, such as during class discussions or presentations.
• Smile often so you come across as approachable and people can tell that you are open for communication.
• Be positive and make new friends. • With an array of activities at RP that adds value to your
education and life, you could join Clubs/Interest Groups that cultivate your interests and expand your social circle.
Make your journey at RP a fruitful and enriching one! Good luck!
