A Day in the Life of an

Information Technology student!

We tag along with Chan Wei Zhang at the School of Infocomm to discover what a typical school day is like for a Year 3 Information Technology student.

In class, my lecturer Mr Omar starts the day with a short lecture on radius and TACACS+. They’re basically two prominent security protocols used to control access into networks.

9:45am – 10:00am

9:30am

Back from a re-energising two-week break, I'm so ready for my lessons. Let’s do this! Oh wow, I didn’t know it would be so interesting to find out what goes on behind logging on to a server.

Finally...lunch time! Oh, there're so many options at the eco-canteen to choose from! Today, it's definitely the scrumptious vegetarian rice for me.

YUM!

12:15pm – 1:15pm

It's finally time for our presentations. My team takes the stage as the first one to present our findings of the day.

Back in class, my team and I work on our presentation together to ensure that all of our slides are heading in the right direction.

So Cool! After the lecture, we head back to our table for our laboratory session. This is the time for us to use Kali Linux – a software designed for penetration testing. 2:15pm – 2:30pm

1:15pm – 2:15pm

10:00am – 10:15am

After we've all shared our results with the class, Mr Omar takes some time with each team to go through the areas we’ve missed out on. He’s such a knowledgeable lecturer!

2:30pm – 3:00pm

4:15pm – 4:45pm

10:15am – 10:30am

Here Mr Omar is providing me with some pointers on the usage of the relevant software tools for the activity.

Whoa! Mr Omar then goes to each group to check on our progress and ensure that we’re carrying out the activity of ‘Capturing the Flag’ correctly. We’re supposed to discover and exploit existing vulnerabilities within the given systems and at the same time propose revelant counter measures.

10:30am – 11:15am

My friends and I enjoy having lunch together. It gives us a great opportunity to bond outside the classroom.

It’s my turn to present! Hope I touch on all the key points correctly!

11:30am – 12:15pm

Before the start of my weekly String Ensemble CCA session, my buddies and I practice some songs on our violins for our trainer to critique later on.

11:15am – 11:30am

Before heading out for lunch, we decide on the content for our presentation and split up the work on the slides among us.

After Class

Awesome!

I absolutely love playing the violin. It’s so relaxing and melodious!

4:45pm – 5:00pm

Ah! What a fruitful day it’s been in school! Time to head home. Till next time, goodbye folks.

About the Student I would describe myself as… happy-go-lucky and positive! When I first joined RP… I was slightly afraid because it was a whole new learning environment as compared to my former secondary school. But I soon adapted to life in RP and came to understand how the PBL method of learning works. My lecturers and friends helped me a lot too.

What I enjoy most about my diploma is that… it opens my eyes to many interesting Information Technology (IT) concepts. I’m also fascinated by how much can be done through the use of technology. The knowledge I've gained inspires me to find out more about the power of IT and the influence it has on our daily lives.

Hands down, the best skill I’ve mastered in RP… is learning how to work together in teams. As most of our lessons require team collaboration in order to solve the problem effectively, we get to communicate frequently within the team. This is a great way to learn how to work with different kinds of people.

What's PBL?

RP offers a holistic educational experience through various innovative teaching approaches, leveraging the fundamentals of Problem-based Learning (PBL). Guided by trained lecturers, students work in teams to solve problems and present viable solutions to the class. With class sizes kept small, RP lecturers guide you to solve problems, overcome challenges, and enable you to experience working in a team. Such PBL sessions provide immense value as you would be well-prepared to take on the real working world.

PBL Workshops for secondary school students

Led by RP’s own student lecturers, the two-hour workshops held at RP will give secondary school students a taste of RP’s unique learning process. These exciting workshops are absolutely free, so come and experience RP today! To find out more, visit www.rp.edu.sg/learning_journeys.aspx

About C200 Special Project Module

This module embraces the student-centred RP spirit by providing opportunities for innovation and skills development through practical project work, with a view to better prepare students to compete in national or international events. To meet the requirements of this module, students will be engaged in preparation, demonstration, testing, and documentation. This module aims to bring out the best in students so that they can perform the required tasks in a competitive setting.

In my 9 years of industry experience… I‘ve worked with several IT companies including Singapore Computer Systems (SCS), Getronics Solution, Borland Software, and Nikko Asset Management. I’ve also helmed different roles involved in dealing with a range of areas, including customer service, server/network administration, IT Security, and IT project management.

PBL is an efficient teaching tool as… it provides opportunities for students to face and solve practical problems which are applicable to the working industry in a safe learning environment. To me, RP students are… dedicated team players, independent towards learning, and more resourceful than traditional students. In fact, they are also better equipped with soft skills. Others should make RP their choice because… the institution provides

e know, it may be intimidating for some of you to have to present every single day in RP. Chill, with constant practice and our handy tips, you’ll be a star presenter in no time.

Research your topic

No matter what module you’re taking, there are always resources provided by your lecturer to help you along. Hence, be sure to read up and spend enough time collecting pointers as it’ll help you to be more confident in presenting when you know your stuff.

Ask questions

Due to RP’s small class size (no more than 25 students), you will have countless opportunities to voice out your opinions and raise your doubts. P.S. The small class size is deliberate to enable you to work in a socially collaborative environment and to support your learning.

Look presentable

No, you need not spend a fortune on clothes, but practise the habit of dressing well and looking presentable for your lessons. Why? Appearance says a lot about someone’s personality and confidence, that’s why!

Keep eye contact

About the Lecturer

a unique learning experience whereby students are provided with opportunities to learn and work collaboratively in teams, share their ideas and innovation through an open-minded environment, and improve themselves through constant feedback from peers and lecturers.

HOW TO: BE A

Gibbsen Omar Lecturer Diploma in Information Technology School of Infocomm

Time to get serious. The mark of a good presenter is how they engage their audience throughout the presentation. So be sure to use the ‘scanning the room’ technique by keeping eye contact with as many classmates and your lecturer, of course.

Stay on topic

When presenting, it is normal to divert from the main topic, but as much as possible, pick out only the essentials from the side topic that can be linked back to your presentation.

Take part in the Q&A

At the end of your presentation, your lecturer would usually have a quick Q&A session. As much as possible, try to answer the questions carefully and if you’re unsure, give yourself a moment to gather your thoughts before sharing your answer with the class.

Watch and learn

Take time to observe how others present and ask yourself if you could incorporate the same technique to your own presentations. Trust us, this is a good way to improve!

What are some highlights of your career with the RSAF? In my 26 years of service in the RSAF, I held several staff and command appointments. My last appointment was Base S4 of Sembawang Airbase, overseeing the airbase logistics, aircraft maintenance, and quality assurance centre of the helicopter base.

Intern Diaries

Singapore to Phuket

Whether in Singapore or other cities abroad, RP students never fail to impress their colleagues and bosses. In fact, some even land coveted permanent job offers too! Aerospace Ace Describing his 20-week long internship with UTC Aerospace Systems as the most enriching experience of his life, Maheshwar got to witness firsthand how an aviation company runs. What did you do there? I was attached to the Materials Department and my main duty was assisting in the area of Chemical purchases. Given my duty, I worked closely with engineers and technicians, and even visited the workshop to see how some repairs are carried out on the aircraft components.

From Intern to Employee To say that Shahidah is one lucky intern would be an understatement. The 16week internship with Vivafit enabled her to secure a full-time position with the company even before graduation! “Before this, I had planned to get a proper job before university, and then this opportunity came along! Plus, the extra income it brings is definitely a bonus,” she says. Why Vivafit? I wanted to try something new. As Vivafit is an all ladies gym, I knew the experience would be different from others.

14 Transform

Were you able to apply anything you've learned in RP during your internship? Most definitely! My knowledge of basic aerospace systems helped me understand the needs of the technicians and the basic regulations when purchasing chemicals. The skills you've picked up enable you... To work well under pressure! I've also been able to improve on my interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills.

Nurul Shahidah Bte Mohd Noor Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management School of Sports, Health and Leisure 2014 Graduate What did you enjoy most about the internship? It was a total hands-on internship where I was actively involved in things in the course of my education. Everything I learnt, I could relate to the ever-growing sports industry, which made this experience so awesome. The skills you’ve garnered from the internship include… Being able to communicate with many different personalities, age group, and races in harmony. I’ve learnt to be more confident too as I had to approach potential clients daily.

“It was a journey of a lifetime,” says Qian Hui when asked to sum up her internship experience. An intern for IndoChine Resort & Villas in Phuket, she states that the most eye-opening experience of the attachment was working together in diverse international groups, having had colleagues from different parts of the world coming together to work as one. What made you decide to apply for an overseas internship? I decided to apply for an overseas internship as I thought it would be fun and interesting to work in

a whole new environment. Furthermore, being an adventurous person, I like discovering more about places that I have yet to go to. Was it easy to carry out your duties in a foreign land? Yes, it was! As my diploma is related to this field, I was able to see what had been taught in class being applied at work. In terms of duties, I worked under different departments including Restaurant, Housekeeping, and Front Office, experiencing various roles. How did it feel to represent RP in an overseas internship? I am honoured to have represented RP. Singaporeans visiting the resort frequently asked, “Which school are you from?” Therefore, it was always important for me to uphold the school image by delivering quality service to all my guests.

A Taste of the Sea For four months, Christopher had the chance to live his dream of working with animals all day, every day! Attached to Resorts World Sentosa, Christopher’s role as a marine mammal specialist allowed him to get a grasp of the working world and a glimpse of what potentially lies ahead of him.

What’s the most memorable thing you’ve done in your internship? The part that I enjoyed most was a test in the internship, where I had to train the animal in a new behaviour and have it executed perfectly. It was tough work, but the end product was amazing and beautiful to watch.

Tell us more about your cool internship! I was attached to the dolphin training team so I had to learn the basics of preparing the diet for the animals and understand the dolphin anatomy thoroughly. In the second part of the internship, I was attached to the vets to observe how they cared for marine life such as sharks and fishes.

How did you translate what you’ve studied in RP to the internship? I didn't realise I could possibly apply my knowledge as a Biomedical Sciences student into training animals! But in fact, I was one of the few who actually understood how medication and vitamins work. Simple things like drug to drug interaction also came into play, so it benefitted me to know so much.

Chasing Dreams

The High-Flyer Although the journey to a polytechnic was a long one for Amir, he held on to his dream and worked hard in the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) to attain his goal. It didn’t take him long to decide that RP is his number one choice as he was certain that the school has everything he was looking for – from the right course to the teaching style. “As a result of my experiences in ITE, which prepared me for life in RP, it was easy for me to adapt to the learning methods here. It all started when Maya attended a week’s worth of PBL trials in RP with her former secondary school. Upon her first go at PBL, she liked this style of learning immediately and was eager to join RP after the O-Levels. But what was it about PBL that swept her off her feet? According to the Mass Communication student, it was the fact that PBL promotes independent learning. Thankful to have received the RP Freshmen Scholarship, Maya shares that the scholarship goes beyond solely providing financial support. “As an RP scholar, I understand the need to study harder and be a good role model to others. The scholarship is now my motivation to do better in everything that I do,” she says. Just like every student, it took Maya a while to fully adapt to polytechnic life but as soon as she got the hang of it, she knew she had more reasons to be in love with RP. “I have never regretted my decision to join RP with interesting lessons to attend, I always look forward to coming to school every day.”

RP…

The P Editi FP on

They say that a problem shared is a problem halved. So get all your burning questions answered right here.

How does PFP work? When you are enrolled in the Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) at RP, you are given a provisional place in RP in your chosen diploma, subject to you passing all your modules in the one-year PFP. So instead of continuing with your O-Levels in Secondary 5, you can join RP under this programme to prepare yourself for your pre-selected diploma course.

Who is eligible for PFP? The PFP caters to students in the top 10 per cent of the Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) cohort. Close to 1,200 places are catered each year by the polytechnics.

What should my score be to qualify for PFP?

Can Secondary 4 Express and Secondary 5 Normal (Academic) students apply for PFP? No, unfortunately. These students should use their O-Level results to apply to the polytechnics through the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) or JointPolytechnic Special Admissions Exercise (JPSAE). They may also apply through the Direct Polytechnic Admissions (DPA) exercise prior to the O-Levels.

Which RP courses are offered under PFP? All RP diplomas are offered under PFP. Check out our comprehensive list of diplomas at the back of this magazine.

What’s so unique about PFP at RP? PFP at RP has five unique characteristics, including: An afternoon every week reserved for field trips or other fun enrichment activities

I decided to join RP… because RP has the most interesting sports courses in Singapore! I feel that RP is an institution that really supports student athletes like me who are serious in pursuing sport

and academic excellence and I’m really grateful for that. My diploma programme... provides me with a flexible academic curriculum. When I am away for competitions, I can conveniently catch up on school work via the school portal. I’m also allowed to defer my modules if I need to train full-time or compete overseas for a long period of time. When I was awarded the Sportsboy of the Year… I was pleasantly surprised! I didn’t expect myself to win because my competitors were really strong. Nonetheless, I’m really honoured to win this award. I’m glad that through this, I was able to bring glory to RP too as people acknowledge me as an RP student.

RP lecturers are… different from the rest as they encourage you to grow and develop independently. An analogy I find

describes RP lecturers very aptly is that they are those who expect you to find a way to survive when you are stuck in the middle of a forest with a half-completed map. At the end, when you're out, you can proudly say that you are your own problem solver – and that’s the beauty of RP's learning environment.

Producing a music album even before graduating? Check! Shawal and his band members turned the impossible into possible when they debuted their first album in 2008. through modules that provide us with solid knowledge. What’s more, the handson experience we get from the training kitchens also adds value to our learning. The lessons in RP… are very useful in preparing us for our career and the industry. As an SOH student, I enjoy the stories shared by the lecturers most as they impart valuable practical knowledge to us and keep the class lively.

My experience in Las Vegas… was beyond amazing! The NAB show blew my mind as I got to witness how much can be created when a massive crowd of people with the same passion come together. It was incredible!

Now that I’ve graduated… I want to join my other talented peers to bring Singapore films and broadcast to the next level. In fact, I would like to continue my passion for films with anyone and everyone.

At the competition… we had to present a festive buffet platter consisting of four plated desserts, three appetisers, and a five-course gastronomy menu. I was allocated the task of making the desserts. Although it was my first time working on gelatine, I was able to do it well, thanks to the valuable lessons from my school chefs at SOH.

“What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!” says Pavithran. Inspired by his lecturer to join the Sony EYES Filmmaking Competition, Pavithran’s video entry was selected as one of the top two winning entries! He even flew on an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas to participate in the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show 2014.

Having acquired the relevant skills from my diploma… I was very much involved in the production of my band's album. The soft skills that I learnt in school helped me tremendously in my work even though certain areas require more

research. Producing the album was a personal goal and achievement for my contribution to the band. After the release of our music album… my life changed! The album gave us a few shows and we even made profits through album sales. We garnered some attention from the media and that promoted the band further and soon enough, our songs were played on the radio. For our songs to be on the top 10 charts of RIA… was a thrilling experience. Our songs being on the charts show that people are listening to our music and that they love it.
