Greetings to the Chicopee Comprehensive Class of 2020! I am honored to write to you as your Class President, and I hope that I can say a few words that will capture the true Spirit of our last four years. Yes, we are indeed in the midst of a global pandemic and we’re all wearing masks and there’s no toilet paper to be found but we’ve survived! There are so many wonderful things to celebrate, especially being able to have shared my high school years here with all of you. It is not traditional. It is unique just like each and every one of us. Just like our class, uniqueness defines us. Although some of us will never experience a final game on the field or court; some will not get to deliver a final concert; we will not get to experi-
school like no other class before us. Knowing our class spirit, I have no doubt that things, as hard as they may seem right now, are going to turn out just fine. That’s just who we are. There are so many great Comp memories, way too many to list. We each had our own personal experiences, oneswhich we will remember forever. Recently we were able to partipate in the first ever Virtual Spirit week, which I’m –Brett Rodriguez sure will go down in history. We attended our Junior Prom,, ence and it was amazing. We resenior week with a prom, pic- member last year’s Spirit nic, or banquet. We won’t be Week, the first after school saying a proper goodbye to Video Game Tournament, and our teachers and friends, but in the fact that we won every the midst of all of this we get year’s Lip Synch Battle. I’ll never get a chance to redeem myself after getting beat so bad. I barely walked away with both arms intact. Do not arm wrestle Mr. Morrison is the moral of the story. We leave here with No Regrets. Our pockets are brimming with hope...This is certainly not the end. We’ve experienced these dark waters before. Most of us were born during one of the darkest moments in our Nation’s history, September 11, 2001. Our parents were able to navigate those Please see Rodriguez page 5

terrifying and uncertain waters on our behalf. They remained calm, even through fearful times. Now, In the midst of the current global pandemic, we must summon their courage and strength and go forward. And we will. This will not stop us one bit. My main message is one of hope– hope in what the future brings, and placing our faith in the good things yet to come. To quote our former President: “That light we see shining so brightly ahead is our first glance towards the future.” And lastly, a shout out to my friend Mr. John Archambault, the best art teacher ever. Taken from us too soon. Thank you sir. And to my Mom and Pop, who has helped me through every step in this journey. Thank you to Mr. Morrison, our principal, and the entire administrative team for guiding us through our past 4 years. I have to mention the best class advisors in the galaxy, Mrs. Olszewski and Mr. Martin! Thank you. I’d also like to thank my fellow officers, Cristian Green, Skylar Phillips, and Brianna Bushey, a squad like no other. Lastly, my coaches, I thank coach Mercer, Morrisette, and Parks. You all put me through more than enough to allow any measly virus bother me. Let us go forth, Chicopee Comprehensive Class of 2020. Begin a journey filled with optimism, tenacity, and uniqueness that has never been seen before. Nothing will break our Spirit. We are a village, bound together by hope and a combined purpose.

Good evening class of 2020. Welcome families, faculty, staff and the entire Chicopee community. I am Mrs. Kruser, principal of Chicopee High School. Never have I felt so
much pressure to write a speech. This is a world changing historical moment. All of us are in a time that scholars, scientists, politicians, and historians will write about for years and years.
I don’t want to ignore the fact that we are facing unbelievably challenging times, but this tonight is a celebration. I also do not want to sound like a trite commercial that minimizes everything when they say, “we got this.” So what I would rather do is focus on the students from the class of 2020! I remember your freshmen orientation like it was yesterday!! You all came in, young, wide eyed, so excited to be in the big high school, with your classes, and sports, and clubs, and friends. Some of you came later, and you quickly found that Chicopee High School was a school where you could find your place and the teachers would be there for you as you grew up. We kept referring to you as the class of 2020 vision. We were kind of joking, but boy nobody had the vision of the last year. Even before this global crisis, we as a
school and especially as the class of 2020, confronted major academic challenges and as a community we mourned the death of a beloved classmate and former graduate. Then we again faced another unprecedented challenge. What I learned is how beautiful all of you are and how much you help each other out in the good times and the difficult times. You are a true example of a caring community and I can say all of us at Chicopee High School feel privileged to be just a small part of that community. Whether you go to the military, workforce, or college, you will always be a pacer and we will always be here cheering you on. I am so glad we were able to have our traditional pride week. It's always a highlight for seniors and you were able to showcase your strength, commitment, passion, and fun loving nature. We didn’t know at the time how much we would need it and remember it. Tradition is important to us at CHS and it was important for all of us to celebrate during graduation time and to honor all of your hard work and dedication over the past four years-even if we were unsure how. We started to be creative and think out of the box, and soon things started to come together so we could celebrate your accomplishments. The faculty came together to deliver your signs and have a parade to distribute your caps and gowns. You came to the parade with your cars decorated, with smiles on your faces, cheering loudly because nothing is going to stop your moment to celebrate. Our video team and others worked together to make this
creative and artistic graduation for the class of 2020 and their families. The entire CHS community helped make all of this a success. Thank you!!!!! I always tell my own children and my students, “go out and write your own story” “no one can write it for you, it’s yours” honestly, right now I am sure you are feeling that you are not always in control of your own story. Maybe that is true but this part of your story will add to who you are as people. You have some great plans. We have students entering the military and the prestigious united states military academy. We have students already working and contributing to their families, we have students going to great schools like Middlebury College, Boston College, College of Holy Cross, Elms College, Western New England University, Holyoke Community and Springfield Technical Community College. This is just a fraction of the schools our students will be representing. This is a difficult time in history, and I believe that all of you in this beautiful class of 2020 will make these trying times a part of your unique story. You will love harder, you will hug a little longer, and talk to loved ones a little more, you will appreciate all of the little and big successes in your life, you will want your life to have meaning, whatever that might mean to you. All of us at Chicopee High School are so proud of you!!!! We will be watching to see how your story unfolds. We are here for you class of 2020!!!! Congratulations!!!

CLASS PRESIDENT, CARLOS BARRIGA To the students and families joining us today to celebrate the iron will and unmatched perseverance of those who stared uncertainty and doubt in the eyes and simply continued to push forward. These individuals I speak about, are none other than those who sit before me today, the class of 2020, a class that undeniably has faced darkness and tragedy, only to overcome that adversity and come out on the other side as stronger and more mature members of society. The things that we have endured only make our voyage through the vast and furious waters that have been the past 4 years of our lives, some of the most influential. Along with the few hidden gems from our teachers, we have learned a lot from our experiences. Speaking for myself, this journey has at times felt as if I was trudging against the current, that the strife and emotion was all too much, and that I'd be swept away in a sea of nameless faces. It became an easy thought to fall on when everything around you appears foreign and the strangers that brush past you dont look like what you see in the mirror. I was lost in a place I worked so hard to get to, a kid with no name for himself in a school that was riddled with only the greatest names on it's walls. I struggled to find my place as the tide constantly pulled me back and forth, I knew I had to make a choice, a choice a lot of us are faced with at one point in our lives, to give in to the tide and float through the memories of what could've been, or to do absolutely everything I could, to give Chicopee High School my all, to leave everything out on the field, and make something of myself, while I still could. Standing up here, guess which one I chose. All jokes aside, making a name for myself became apparent as I found myself doing things I only ever dreamed about and making friends of the faces I once feared. I began to hear the different things people labeled me as, nicknames that represented different aspects of who I was, or what I did.
CHS Class President, Carlos Barriga.
Reminder Publishing submitted photo These labels painted me in different strokes, some broader than others when the occasional stereotype or micro aggression was thrown my way, especially when a Mexican kid decides to run for president. The irony isn't lost on me. At times it seemed as if I could sail no further, that the names I had longed for and fought for were temporary and I was still that lost kid. It isn't common to be taught to fail in life and so when it occurs failure becomes hard to bear, and I am no stranger to failing, not literally at least, looking at you Mrs.Romansiv. But even in failure I realized that there was so much more to learn, as all of you will without a doubt experience. We all fail, whether it's a class or trying to patch a broken relationship, or maybe you even burned the chicken while cooking and now you have no dinner. It is our human nature to fail, it's what you do within that failure that begins to define you, to earn the name of a fighter, a leader, someone who under any circumstance comes through. I am happy to tell you that in at least one way or another, we all have already succeeded through hardship. When the going got rough, and we were told that we could not participate in the last months of our 12 years of schooling, that the boat we had began our voyage on was sinking, we rose to the occasion and swam the last mile Please see Barriga page 12

Continued from page 9 to shore, demonstrating the power and determination that the class of 2020 holds. I know that this still leaves a level of uncertainty with all of you, clueless as to what your next steps are to be. It is difficult. And we have it more difficult than anybody before us, but within the time I've spent with every single one of you, in the hallways, in the classroom, in the stands, or even on the field, despite any preconceived notion, all of you are destined for greatness. Enjoy the journey through the wicked sea, if you ever get lost look to the past as your north star. Let the names be a part of who you are as for the rest of our lives we will all be Pacers, therefore I know that I'm never alone
even in times of isolation. I searched my entire life to find meaning in something, and when it came time to take control of my life I searched for names that I could look back on and own. It's only standing up here now that I realize there was no need for searching, for I've donned many names in my life. I am Carlos, number 9, Center snare, QB1, captain, car, Patricio, garlos, mijo, hermano, friend, peach nut, track god, ace, Barriga. These represent my being, who I’ve evolved to be, like stripes earned, tests passed, medals to a soldier. But however many names I wear in this life, nothing will ever even come close to being able to call myself your president. We've embarked on this story together and part of the journey is the end, to all my friends sitting here and all the

The Holyoke High School Class of 2020 is a historic class for a historic year. Dean campus seniors helped pull that campus through its darkest moments and leave the Dean program an emerging beacon of hope and opportunity. North campus seniors made their voices heard and changed school policy on hats and du-rags, searches and curriculum. Opportunity Academy seniors had the courage to ask
for and use the help and support found in our personalized programming. And every senior faced the disappointment of a "lost" senior spring with perspective and maturity, persevering on AP exams and college finals, taking on essential worker jobs, and staying connected to their friends, families, and community. So many of our seniors will be able to look back on these extraordinarily challenging times and be able to say they rose to the challenges. I am confident this generation will move us beyond a world driven by race and privilege and inequality, they will take us to medical and technical breakthroughs that make this pandemic a historical anomaly, and they will restore grace and dignity to our public life. I cannot wait to extol their virtues at Roberts Field on August 2nd. With great respect and great love, Dr. Stephen Mahoney
Class of 2020, I write this in awe of the way you navigated the once in a generation global pandemic that altered the course of your senior year. You demonstrated a resilience,
flexibility and optimism that defy your years of life experience. You remained Holyoke Strong even when the senior spring you planned veered dramatically from what you planned. In the end, you emerge the better from this characterbuilding journey. You started new traditions like the graduation car parade, successfully completed a semester virtually and can already put on a resume that you “worked from home. During school closure, some of you served as essential workers, cared for sick family members and provided childcare for younger siblings all while juggling schoolwork.
As a result, you are more prepared to conquer the world beyond Holyoke more than any class that preceded you and any class that will follow. Seniors, you have definitely made your mark and will leave a permanent legacy in your city. We are so proud of you and your many academic, leadership, athletic and artistic accomplishments. Without a doubt, you will go down in history as the most memorable class in the history of Holyoke High School. I look forward to presenting you with your diplomas in person on August 2nd. Go, Knights! Dr. Stephen Zrike, Jr.
