The Romans believed that marriage was distracting men from joining the army. To solve the problem, the government banned marriage altogether. But Saint Valentine would have none of it. He continued to perform illegal marriages until he was caught and beheaded. Today we remember Saint Valentine as a martyr who died for romance and love, earning him the title of patron saint of courtly love.
