hen confidence to travel returns, more people will consider vacation destinations within reasonable driving distance. A little over a three-hour drive, from Western, Massachusetts, New York’s Sullivan Catskills has long been known for its stunning natural beauty. The area continues to attract multigenerational families and has recently become a destination popular with a hip, young crowd attracted to quaint small towns dotted with restaurants, bakeries, breweries, distilleries, cock-
tail and wine bars and more. This country destination is home to any number of “first” and “only” attractions: the Dove Trail, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts at the site of the 1969 Woodstock concert, the American birthplace of fly-fishing, one of the largest American eagle nesting populations in the Northeast and New York’s largest indoor waterpark. There’s a growing arts and culture scene, too including live outdoor music (Bethel Woods Center for the Arts), art galleries (DVAA), museums and historical sites
(Minisink Battleground Historic Park, Time and the Valley Museum). Summer weekends offer farmers markets, perfect for cooking up your own gourmet meals. Or inventive chefs offer wood-fired gourmet pizza riverside, slow-cooked barbecue roadside, gourmet fried chicken and more. And takeout is always available. Or you can wind your way through the Craft Beverage Trail. If luxury and entertainment is your preference, Resorts World Catskills is 18-story all-suite hotel, casino and entertainment

You can focus on health at YO1 Wellness Resort and Spa; or try the newest boutique hotel and spa, Kenoza Hall. Families love the Kartrite Resort & Indoor Waterpark. The Eldred Preserve is a unique destination for dining, boutique accommodations, events and weddings. Vacation rentals are increasingly popular here, too. But they do book quickly. The great outdoors in the Sullivan Catskills provides the perfect setting for social distancing with dozens of hiking trails, boating, fishing, eagle-watching, golf, and parks perfect for small family and friend get togethers. Travelers’ health is always a priority and attractions, accommodations, and restaurants in the Sullivan Catskills are following reopening, operational and mitigation measures and protocols as recommended by John’s Hopkins University, the CDC, and local health departments.

fter months of being cooped up inside, Greene County, the Catskills Region of New York State, is ready to welcome visitors to enjoy the great outdoors. Perfect for day-trippers and weekenders alike, The Great Northern Catskills of Greene County, is “an ideal place to escape to and enjoy the perfect mix of nature and outdoor adventure, as well as arts and culture,” says Heather Bagshaw, the county’s Tourism Director. “It’s uncrowded, unpretentious, and genuinely authentic. New dining and lodging places are opening up all the time, offering inventive cuisine, and unique lodging options.” It’s fitting that Washington Irving, the author behind Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle— whose decades
long slumber has been studied and read in many an English class over the years, got his inspiration in the Catskills, and subsequently set the story in Greene County. Outdoor enthusiasts will be reinvigorated and inspired by the breathtaking views and recreational adventures that await them in the Great Northern Catskills. Visitors can enjoy mountain biking and hiking, as well as fishing and the “New York Zipline Adventure Tours, the longest, highest, fastest Zipline canopy tour in the world.” Not to be left out, golfers can enjoy the day playing at the Catskills Nine, also known as the Rip Van Winkle Golf Trail, which Bagshaw explains is perfect “for a challenging experience offering unparalleled views.” Greene County has a rich arts and culture scene. STAY COMFORTABLE AND ALERT ON
ROAD TRIPS
F
ew car enthusiasts can resist the siren song of the open road. When the open road beckons, answering its call can open the door to adventure and unending possibilities. Road trips tend to dwindle when winter arrives, and for good reason. Wet, wintry conditions can make roads more dangerous and compromise motorists’ visibility. Many drivers wisely avoid the roads as much as possible in winter, and statistics on crash deaths reflect that caution. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, July, a month when many people take to the road on summer vacations, had the most crash deaths of any month in 2017, while February, a month when drivers traditionally stay home, had the fewest. Such statistics underscore the importance of staying comfortable and alert behind the wheel. As motorists prepare to hit the road again this spring, they should keep these tips in mind to ensure their road trips are as safe as they are adventurous.
· GET AMPLE REST, even if Make the most of our picturesque landscape and visit dutchesstourism.com/ outside to select an outdoor spot to spend your morning, afternoon, or even full day! Biking and hiking are two of our favorite pastimes in
Dutchess, and they make us feel less guilty about taking a few extra bites of dessert. Now that’s what we call the perfect picnic getaway. Festivals, dining events, fairs, parades and more – Dutchess County has a jam-
packed agenda year-round with something for everyone.
Visit dutchesstourism.com/ calendar for current and complete event details.
that means making frequent stops. Drivers should build frequent stops and nightly rest into their road trips. Doing so can help to combat the drowsiness that develops when spending long hours behind the wheel staring at the road ahead. Drivers should pay attention to how
they’re feeling and pull over if their eyes begin to feel heavy or their minds begin to wander. Each of these are signs of fatigue that could prove deadly to drivers, their passengers and fellow motorists.
· SHARE DRIVING DUTIES.
Sharing driving duties is a great way to reduce driving-related eye strain. The Vision Council notes that driving requires the eyes to stay in constant motion as they focus and refocus on approaching objects. Eyes also are in constant contention with distractions like oncoming headlights or the glare of the sun. These factors combine to strain the eyes. As drivers spend more and more time behind the wheel, their eyes become tired and their vision becomes less reliable. Sharing driving duties can ensure a fresh set of eyes is behind the wheel at all times.
· MAINTAIN PROPER POSTURE. Proper posture
can make drivers less susceptible to the aches and pains that can develop during long car trips. In addition, the auto insurance provider Geico® notes that studies have shown that proper posture, which involves sitting an appropriate distance from the steering wheel, makes drivers less likely to suffer severe injuries to the head, neck and chest in front- and rear-end collisions.

Hampton Beach
IT ’S ALL ABOUT THE MEMORIES By Lisa Martineau emories of Hampton Beach will forever linger after visiting this special NH resort. Here, the ocean, forever dancing with the moon, creates an ebb and flow that stays with you for years, even decades. It’s found in the laughter of children dashing from an incoming wave, little hands making their own sand castles, the sound of the gulls in flight over the surf, the movement of water breaking on a sandy beach, the awe of a sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean, long meandering walks along the edge of the sea breaking on a sandy beach, along a 1.3 mile shoreline that is part of a short, rocky coastline. As the summer sun sizzles, a mad dash to the refreshing water acts as a reset button.
M
And later, as the sun dips low, afternoon turns to night and the evening cools. A watch of the moonrise against a pink and purple sky is captured, an internal photograph. This is a New England family vacation. You’ll remember the taste of breakfast from the decks of the Sea Ketch, the call of Blink’s FryDoe at any time of day or night, seafood with a view at The Boardwalk Cafe, and the friendly atmosphere at McGuirk’s Ocean View Hotel and Restaurant. Drinks at Bernie’s Beach Bar beckon during an evening with friends. Wednesday night fireworks fascinate kids of all ages. Monday night movies under the stars bring families together. is a mixture of traffic stirring for a trip home and visitors dipping into shops and food stands for pizza or french fries, fried clams or a sausage sandwich before walking back to a rented cottage, condo or hotel for the night. The Seashell Stage is always “on” during summer nights, with live bands playing music - every night for 80 nights each year. This year might be the exception, but it doesn’t change anything. Walking on the Boulevard will take on new meaning - you’ll hear live bands streaming out from the restaurants instead, mixed in with the pingsand-dings of the arcades. And maybe, if you listen hard enough, you’ll hear the ever-present surf in the background. During an overcast day, a

Such a mentality involves approaching situations with an open mind and doing one’s best to avoid letting past experiences dictate how you respond to new ones. An open mind can help people experience something new and completely different than what they’re accustomed in a whole new way, which is something many people enjoy most about traveling.

· AWAKE: Paying attention while traveling may sound simple, but making an effort to being actively attuned to travel experiences can make trips that much more valuable for those hoping to grow and engage the world in new ways. · RESILIENT: Accept that accessing better experiences and finding growth opportunities while traveling might pose certain challenges. Being resilient in the face of such challenges and taking them on willingly and actively can make for a transformational experience. · THANKFUL: A mindset
focused on being thankful and thoughtful while traveling can make travelers better stewards. By embracing the principles of transformational travel, people may get more out of their trips than they ever anticipated.

t can be hard for some people to imagine a life without traveling. Upon returning home from a trip, travel enthusiasts might already be looking forward to their next excursion. Some might refer to this as “catching the travel bug,” but for others traveling is more than the often temporary fixation on seeing new places that can develop after an especially memorable trip. According to the Transformational Travel Council, transformational travel is intentionally traveling to stretch, learn and grow into new ways of being and engaging in the world. Transformational travel can give people something to look forward to, which studies have shown is one of the hidden benefits of traveling. A study from researchers at Cornell University found that experiential purchases like travel tend to provide more enduring happiness than material purchases. In essence, people tend to get more lasting happiness from doing things than from owning things. Though researchers have yet to examine the correlation between transformational travel and overall happiness, it’s easy to see how transformational travelers may be especially likely to benefit from the anticipation of a planned trip, as such men and women are not only heading off on exciting trips, but doing so with the intent of having life-changing experiences. So how can people become transformational travelers? The TTC promotes the notion of traveling with HEART, an acronym that encourages travelers to be humble, engaged, awake, resilient, and thankful during their trips.
