here are “so many options” for a perfect day trip to Franklin County that the executive director of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce is hard pressed to offer just one. “A day in Deerfield could begin with a stop at Yankee Candle, then to Powder Hollow Brewery, Magic Wings Butterfly Conservancy, Historic Deerfield, Richardson’s Candy Kitchen and finish with the breathtaking view from Mount Sugarloaf,” said Diana M. Szynal. A day in Shelburne Falls could begin with a cider donut at Hager’s Farm Market, then shopping in Shelburne

Kathy M. DeMeyer, owner of Encore Construction and chairman of the Dennis Tourism Committee, has lived in the Dennis area for more than 40 years. Her favorite aspects of Dennis are the beaches and restaurants. For her, the best beach experience is probably the popular Mayflower Beach because of the tidal pools that are created when the tide goes out. “So, it’s a great place for kids but fills up very fast,” she said. “But Dennis does, by far, have the most beautiful beaches on the cape on both the north and south sides.” In addition to the beaches, other popular places to visit are Dennis Cinema, Scargo Tower, Johnny Kelly Park and antique shops. If she were to recommend a day trip from Springfield to Dennis, André would suggest having a hearty breakfast upon arrival at one of the many breakfast places, including the Good Friends Café. “Then head to the beach,” she said. “The beaches can get crowded, so you may want to make the beach your first stop after you have picked up some

Or just sit back and watch magnificent sunrises on the beach and blazing sunsets over the marsh. And don’t forget kite flying, volleyball, frisbee and soccer on the beach. The boardwalk has numerous walk-up food venues with fried dough, pizza, ice cream, and great seafood like lobsters, fried clams, and more to satisfy your appetite. Several restaurants have great views and outdoor patios overlooking the ocean. In the fall, although most restaurants and shops close, (because student employees go back to college,) there are several food venues that stay open until October or longer. “This beautiful sandy beach is wonderful for long walks and playing on the sand and looking for shells,” said Brown who also owns Ad-cetera Graphics. In September, the annual Seafood Festival is fantastic. Weather permitting, there is also a Boston Circus Guild ‘Cirque du Hampton’ performance, plus a Boston Circus Guild Fire Show in September. Don’t miss the Santa Shop at the south end of the beach and watch the surfers at North Beach. There is a small casino gaming venue on the Boulevard, and the Blue Ocean Society has a touch tank next to the information
center with sea creatures and and fun facts about local wildlife. As pandemic restrictions ease, fireworks, entertainment and crowds will be the biggest concern for social distancing. “We hope that everyone respects other people and takes precautions so visitors and residents stay safe this summer,” Brown said. Ocean Boulevard is reopened for one-way traffic, after social distancing measures last year closed the street. Planned events include nightly live bands on the Seashell Stage and the 21st Annual Sand Classic in June where 10 sand sculptors from around the world compete for $25,000 in prize money. Also, look for the Miss Hampton Beach Pageant, a Country Western music event in July, spectacular fireworks displays weekly and holidays. There is a Talent Show and a Children’s Week in August. Spectators can watch road races and biking races in the fall. During off season beachcombers and nature lovers find plenty of parking and a quiet break after a busy summer of fun and entertainment.

According to The Business Research Company, a market research and intelligence company, the global camping and caravanning market is expected to grow from just under $40 billion in 2020 to more than $45 billion in 2021. Estimates suggest the market will grow even more in the coming years, reaching $56.6 billion by 2025. Camping has long been a popular pastime for outdoor enthusiasts, but it may have developed an entirely new group of devotees in 2020. Traditional vacations may not have been possible in 2020, when governments across the globe urged citizens to avoid conventional travel as the world found itself in the throes of a global pandemic. In an effort to overcome cabin fever, many people viewed camping as a safe way to get out of the house while still limiting contact with people from other households. hen’s the last time you pulled up at a drive-in movie, sipped on award-winning wines while you strolled through sprawling vineyards, or stepped into a vintage open cockpit biplane and took to the skies? If the answer escapes you, it’s time to plan a road trip to Dutchess County. Dutchess is located in the heart of New York State’s Hudson Valley, offering unmatched scenic landscapes. From lovely small villages and reinvigorated cities, to sparkling river views and rolling farmland, Dutchess has it all. Now part of the Empire State Trail, take to the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park in Poughkeepsie – it’s not one of the region’s most popular attractions for nothing! This historic former railroad bridge is the longest elevated pedestrian walkway in the world. Here you can
enjoy the 1.28 mile journey across by bicycle or on foot as you admire panoramic views of the Catskill Mountains and majestic Hudson River. With an important presence in Dutchess, along with its charming river towns, it should come as no surprise that many historic figures chose to reside near the Hudson River. Stroll pristine grounds and gardens at the Great Estates, from the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Sites in Hyde Park, to Locust Grove Estate in Poughkeepsie and Mount Gulian Historic Site in Beacon, each property offers a different perspective into the area’s rich history and will leave you feeling among the elite. Appreciate a different slice of history and bring your sense of adventure to the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Red Hook. Here you can take to

And in the words of Founder, Cole Palen, “It isn’t an airplane if it doesn’t fly”. Plan your trip during Air Show season and see it all come to life in the “History of Flight” or “World War I”, on weekends starting in June. An educational and entertaining experience for the whole family. From the skies to the ground, continue to enjoy fresh air and cultivate lasting memories picking your own seasonal produce at local farms. Farmers are the lifeblood that make Dutchess County one of the richest agricultural experiences in the Northeast, and you can be part of the farm fun. Harvest fresh berries, stock up on specialty items, stroll through vineyards sipping award-winning wines, or even taking a hike with llamas and alpacas. Dutchess’ farm experiences
stand apart from the rest. Drive the country roads out to Amenia and roll up at Four Brothers Drive-In Theater to catch a movie under the stars. This family-friendly attraction will leave you nostalgic with its modern-retro decor and revamped movie snacks like burgers, shakes and old school goodies. Take your visit to another level and stay the night at Hotel Caravana - featured on Good Morning American and ranked ‘Top 8 World’s Best Vintage Caravan Hotels’ by Lonely Planet. The boutique airstream sleeps four and provides a unique getaway in eastern Dutchess. There is something for everyone in the heart of the Hudson Valley. It’s a destination meant for forging incredible memories and discovering that true wealth is actually the exceptional experiences one shares in life. The hand-crafted beverages on the Good Taste Beverage Trail are original and award-winning (Catskill Provisions, Pollinator Gin; Do Good Spirits, Bootlegger Vodka; Roscoe Beer Company, Trout Town Brown Ale). Another original: The Sullivan Catskills Dove Trail— a collection of 50 hand-painted dove sculptures perched throughout our towns, villages and attractions. Each dove was painted by a professional artist in the style of Peter Max and pays homage to the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. The area is home to some of the world’s most unique attractions. Topping the list is Bethel Woods Center for the Arts and the Museum at Bethel Woods. Located in Bethel, at the site of the Woodstock festival the center features an outdoor music pavilion with a seating and lawn capacity of 16,000.
The Museum is dedicated to the ‘60s and the Woodstock festival, and yearly features a special exhibit. It also hosts an annual Harvest Festival for 6 weeks in the fall. Gaming fans are drawn to Resorts World Catskills, the State’s largest Class-3 destination resort casino where gaming— including live table games, slot machines, poker, sports book, and private gaming salons meets the luxury of 5-diamond overnight suites and the Crystal Life Spa for a dose of serenity. Guests from all over the world seek to slow down life’s pace at Yo1 Wellness Resort, the only ayurevedic health center in the country of its size— 68,000 square feet— and 131 rooms and suites with sweeping views of Bailey Lake. If sports and adventure is what you seek, cast a line in the Beaverkill or Willowemoc— where American fly fishing was born. Bird watchers, take note: The Sullivan Catskills is home to one of the largest American Eagle populations in the Northeast. For a dose of old-fashioned family fun look to the always popular Villa Roma Resort
where fun and games are always on tap. For more family adventures consider a Delaware River rafting or canoe trip and combine it with overnight camping. Accommodations here range from full-service resorts and vacation rentals to campgrounds, charming inns and B&Bs. Three new additions this summer include the Eldred Preserve, Callicoon Hills and Chatwal Lodge. Mindful of visitor health, the Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association spearheads Catskills Confidence, a county-wide pledge by tourism-related businesses to follow federal, state and local mitigation measures and protocols for guest health and safety.
A good time, original fun and a good night’s sleep is waiting. The Sullivan Catskills is close, always open, and always ready to welcome you. To learn more and plan your closeto-home getaway call (800) 882-2287 or visit sullivancatskills.com.

What should you do on the drive home from a visit to Saratoga, New York? “Plan you next visit to Saratoga,” said Annamaria D. Bellantoni, vice president of tourism for the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. Location, famous worldclass horse racing, historical attractions, scenic beauty and charm and a wealth of things to do draw people to the Saratoga area every summer and fall. Bellantoni has lived in the area for more than 50 years and appreciates “the amount and diversity of things to do – culture, outdoor activities, great shops and restaurants.”
Summer/fall is a great time to visit because of the pleasant weather and because major attractions like Saratoga Race Course and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center are in operation. (However, there may be restrictions during the 2021 season due to COVID-19). “Summer is a popular time to travel since many visitors plan vacations during this time. Fall foliage is esthetically pleasing, and agricultural activities like apple picking and visiting farm stands is fun to do, amongst other things,” she said. Among the popular places to visit are the Saratoga Race Couse, Saratoga Spa State Park, the National Museum of Racing, Congress Park and

its carousel, Saratoga Springs History Museum, Roosevelt Mineral Baths, and Brown’s Beach at Saratoga Lake. In addition, there is an “incredible downtown area – walkable, pet-friendly, great shops and restaurants,” Bellantoni said, also noting Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Caffe Lena (the longest continuously operating folk music venue in the United States), Universal Preservation Hall, Saratoga Arts, independent art galleries and museums (including three national museums) will delight the cultural senses. Saratoga National Historical Park (10 minutes from Saratoga Springs) is the turning point of the American Revolution and where the British surrendered to American Forces in 1777. Saratoga has a population of about 27,000 — not including summer residents.
“We are a 4-season destination. Located at the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, Saratoga Springs is a nature lover’s paradise,” said Amy W. Smith, general manager/owner of Saratoga Arms Hotel. Hiking mountains, walking trails and general outdoor parks are plentiful in the area. “Saratoga wouldn’t be Saratoga Springs without the springs,” she said. “We were established because hundreds of years ago our mineral springs were known to provide a cure for many ailments. Today you can take a mineral bath at the Roosevelt Spa or sample many free-flowing mineral springs within the downtown area and within the Saratoga Spa State Park.” Hospitality is the cornerstone of what makes Saratoga such a special place, she continued. From the hoteliers,
innkeepers, shopkeepers and restauranteurs, “hospitality runs deep within the Saratoga Community.” She said people there have such pride in their city that they love to show it off. “Our hope is that guests of the city go back home after a wonderful time in Saratoga and can’t wait to plan their return visit,” she said. “Our community understands the sacrifices that travelers are experiencing during this pandemic. They realize that a visit to Saratoga could be the first time they’ve ventured out in over a year. Our goal is to make it a special and safe getaway.”

accinations are helping many people across the globe return to something resembling normalcy after more than a year of living in unusual circumstances. Sports venues are welcoming fans back in limited capacities, and many schools that had offered strictly virtual learning began to welcome students back for in person learning by the end of the school year. Though the world seems to be on the cusp of getting back to normal life, public health officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization continue to emphasize the importance of staying vigilant to stop the spread of COVID-19. Officials with the CDC have urged political leaders to keep social distancing and mask
mandates in place even as the number of vaccinated Americans exceeded 100 million. This summer people may be more comfortable getting out of the house to enjoy the great outdoors than they were a year ago, especially if they’re fully vaccinated. Those who want to follow the advice of public health officials can consider these strategies to keep themselves and others safe as they spend time in nature.
safe to visit beaches during off-peak hours, such as during the late afternoon. Beaches tend to be less crowded as the sun starts to set and dinnertime approaches, so people who want to stay safe but still hear waves crashing on the shore can visit the beach later in the day, even brining dinner so they can enjoy a beach picnic.
· VISIT BEACHES DURING OFF-PEAK HOURS. Crowded beach-

· CONSIDER PRIVATE EXPERIENCES. Whale
watching adventures and group fishing excursions are popular among vacationers and others who want to have a fun day on the water. Unfortunately, crowded boats can make it easy for the virus to spread, especially if mask mandates have been lifted. Before booking a day on a boat, inquire about the company’s safety protocols, including whether or not they’re limiting capacity and insisting all guests wear masks. If not, consider a private boat just for your family or the people within your bubble.
· BRING EVERYTHING ALONG. Bringing meals,
water and snacks along on your trip into the great outdoors can minimize your exposure to others. That reduces the likelihood that you will catch the virus or potentially spread it to others. Bringing your own food and water along also ensures you won’t go hungry or thirsty while on the trails or relaxing on the beach. People may feel more safe about enjoying the great outdoors this summer than they did a year ago. But safety measures like mask wearing, social distancing and avoiding crowds should remain a priority in the months ahead.

Ulster County, New York, has nearly 40 miles of Hudson River shoreline, including 16 access sites on the 256-mile Hudson River Water Trail. That’s just one reason to visit during the summer and fall. There are also more than 300 miles of hiking trails in the Catskills and Shawangunk Mountain, scenic boat rides and kayaking in the Hudson River. But for those who don’t hike or boat, there is an abundance of farms where people can pick everything from strawberries, raspberries and blueberries in spring to cherries and peaches in summer and apples in fall. There are numerous craft beverage businesses including bourbon, vodka and beer dis-

tilleries; and there is a vibrant art and music scene. “The scenic beauty, the wide variety of outdoor activities and its embrace of a fiercely independent art and music” are favorite aspects of Ulster County for Lisa Berger, director of Ulster County Tourism in Kingston. As a lifelong resident, she has particular knowledge of the area and says some of the best “hidden” things to do there include the Fire Tower Challenge – four of the five fire towers in the Catskills are in Ulster County; Northeast OffRoad Adventures that offers 4WD and overland training, driving tours, team outings and adventure programs; The Snyder Estate and Widow Jane Mine in Rosendale — the museum showcases cement

industry artifacts and photographs from the Rosendale Natural Cement District. She also recommends walk on the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail’s fully restored Rosendale Trestle. The Den of Marbletown teddy bear museum/cafe/gift shop is also a must-see. “We all remember getting teddy bears as kids, but how much do you know about stuffed bears?” Berger said. Learn about the fascinating history behind a classic childhood toy at The Den of Marbletown. New is the Hudson House Distillery, scheduled to open this spring. Built in the 1850’s, this Italian villa-style former monastery is situated on a 27-acre waterfront property with views of the Hudson River. The Hudson House features a cocktail bar, tasting rooms, a 5,000-square-foot deck, a spacious venue for events and a craft distillery using select New York State grains to produce small batch
bourbon, rye, whiskey and vodka. Other recommended activities include Minnewaska State Park, Mohonk Preserve, Walkway Over The Hudson, Waterstreet Market, Rail Explorers and Hudson River Cruises. The year-round population of Ulster County is about 180,000, and visitors are drawn by the natural beauty, access to the great outdoors, nine golf courses with no waiting time and music scene that includes Bearsville Theater, The Falcon, Levon Helm Studios and The Colony. The art scene features Woodstock Byrdcliff Guild, Woodstock Artist Association and Museum, CroninArtUSA and Stoneleaf Retreat. Among the unique places to stay are Mohonk Mountain House, Urban Cowboy Catskills, Hotel Kinsley, Woodstock Way, Hotel Dylan and the soon-to-open Hutton Brickyards. If you visit Kingston, which
dates to the arrival of the Dutch in 1652 and was New York’s first capital, Berger suggests visiting Bread and Bar, Sissy café or Buns Burgers for lunch; going to the farmers market; stopping at Sweet Maresa’s Bake Shop; a visit to Cacao Lab, a chocolate store; and window shopping – “Don’t miss Hamilton & Adams and River Mint Finery.” She also recommends books and beer at Rough Draft, a walking tour of Uptown or the Senate House State Historic Site and dinner and drinks by the river at Hutton Brickyard.
