Keep the lights out Lights out is essential to bedtime. In particular, avoid exposure to the blue light from LED bulbs and electronic devices, says Pablo Castillo, sleep medicine specialist at Mayo Clinic. “The body reacts to this artificial light as if it were still daytime,” he said in an email, “and the pineal gland will stop producing the sleep hormone melatonin, resulting in poor sleep quality.” That’s why you should stay away from bright light for at least three hours before bedtime, reduce screen time, and set devices on night mode an hour or two before bed, plus use blue-lightblocking coating on screens or glasses if you “use computers and digital devices heavily,” Castillo wrote. To lightproof the bedroom, “blackout window treatments are a must,” said Greg Roth, a designer at Home Front Build in Los Angeles, by email. “Installing a cornice box at the ceiling level can help prevent light from escaping upward from the windows and reflecting off the ceiling.” Meshberg recommends the Shade Store and Somfy for motorized shades.

ing light-colored paints that are warm and not stark (he likes Lily White from Benjamin Moore) and light-wood floors. For the most soothing tone, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, recommends sky blue, writing in an email that it’s a “positive color” with a sense of “dependability” that can help you fall asleep. You can create a “blue sky” by painting the ceiling, Eiseman suggests. Make it high-gloss for more definition.

Go soft and simple Simplify your space for sleeping only. It doesn’t matter whether you live in a mansion or a studio, you can declutter for a calming effect, according to Meridith Baer, founder of staging company Meridith Baer Home. A sleep-friendly bedroom is like a “good snuggle”— one that makes you “feel embraced and safe,” like a cocoon, Alex P. White, a furniture designer and decorator based in New York and Los Angeles, said in an email. So keep things “tonal and tactile with as many luxurious materials as your budget allows.” As for decor, keep things light and uncomplicated, says New York designer Ryan Korban. He recommends us-

Regulate your schedule Not everyone needs eight hours of sleep, but to “avoid chaos in your circadian rhythms, it is suggested that you maintain the same schedule every day,” says Rachel Salas, sleep specialist and associate professor of neurology at Johns Hopkins Medicine. “Lights in the bedroom should be dimmable or have the ability to adjust to a low setting,” Meshberg says. They can help your brain transition to slumber mode. Go for bedside sconces or lamps (he likes the Pennant Wall Lamp by Andrew Neyer, $200-$300 at Y Lighting, and the Convessi Sconce, $495 at Restoration Hardware).

For frequent travelers and those working night shifts, a circadian lighting system, which adjusts from a warm color spectrum to a cooler spectrum and back to mimic natural light cycles, can be especially useful. Such systems can “artificially create an ambiance that minimizes jet lag and allows for deep sleep,” Baeza wrote in an email. “Some sophisticated LED systems allow for automatic dimming and color changes over time.” The brand Ketra sells lighting fixtures, bulbs and controls that can create such natural lighting and integrate with home automation systems.

sheets with higher thread counts. Also, “the quality and proper weight of your duvet and down comforter are essential in regulating your temperature,” Meshberg wrote. Generally, 700-fill comforters are best for winter and 600-fill works well during summer. (Fill refers to down; synthetics might be labeled as heavyweight or lightweight.) He recommends the down comforters from Brooklinen ($199-$299) and the Organic Italian Vintage-Washed 464 Percale Duvet ($389-$449) from Restoration Hardware. (The National Sleep Founda-

Focus on the bed No doubt, the most important component is the bed. That’s why selecting the right mattress, sheets and pillows can help you get a good slumber. Meshberg recommends 200- to 300-thread-count organic cotton sheets such as the Classic Starter Sheet Set (starting at $93, Brooklinen) and the Italian Vintage-Washed 464 Percale Sheet Set ($369-$429, Restoration Hardware). They “breathe well” and don’t get “too satiny and shiny” like

tion also recommends setting your thermostat at 60 to 67 degrees.) For a mattress, he suggests Casper’s Original ($595$1,195) or Wave ($1,345$2,495) for those who prefer more support. The Beautyrest Recharge Dawson 12-1/2inch hybrid firm mattress ($1,299-$1,999, mattressfirm.com) works well for those sharing beds with restless sleepers because the memory foam won’t move around as much, Meshberg says. As for pillows, “synthetic is the best” because you can wash it, he says.

The dreaded iris borer has been at work

M

USHY IRISES. Slimy irises. Stinky irises. It happens. No you weren’t wrong to dig up and divide your bearded irises this time of year. The plants go into a half sleep beginning a few weeks after flowering and can tolerate being yanked out of the ground, cut up, then replanted. What you expected, though, was firm, white rhizomes, not soft, stinky ones. The dreaded iris borer has been at work. Evil doings began last year, late summer and early fall, when night brought out a dull brown and purplish moth. That was Ms. Borer, flitting about in search of places to lay her eggs. She found the dry debris on the ground near your irises, and especially the bases of old iris stalks themselves, particularly suitable.

In spring, those borers hatched into hungry caterpillars. For their first meal, the caterpillars climbed up the new iris leaves, then started eating their way downwards, chomping away at the succulent goodness inside the leaves. The leaves were not happy, and were left looking watersoaked and ragged. Eventually the caterpillars worked their way to the fat and fleshy iris rhizomes. Boring into them and even hollowing them out, the caterpillars themselves grew similarly fat and fleshy. By now, the brown-headed, ugly, pale pink creatures have swelled up to as much as 2 inches long. Being robbed of its stored food is bad enough for an iris, but it wasn’t all. That insect boring around also opened entryways for a disease called bacterial slime

— and that’s what turns the rhizomes into smelly mush. These borers can be stopped, though. Way back last fall, cleaning up some of the debris near your iris plants as well as old iris stalks would have gotten rid of many eggs. For mean-spirited fun, try to find some of the eggs. They are sculpted, start out white, then turn pinkish — and are a lot prettier than what comes out of them. After admiring them, destroy them. The next line of attack, in spring, is to keep an eye on the young iris leaves. Look for telltale tunnels and caterpillars, and crush the culprit in place. Don’t mistake other leaf problems for borers, though. The most common would be leaf spot disease, which shows up when spring weather is particularly cool.

Look for telltale oval, yellow blotches on the leaves before they brown and die. Remove and compost infected foliage. As for borers, also keep an eye to the ground as the season progresses. Sawdust-like frass at the base of an iris plant tells you a borer is down in the rhizome. Poke a stiff wire into the rhizome and you can impale the critter right in place.

And finally, when it comes time to divide your irises — which needs to be done about every 3 years — check out each plant carefully. Cut away infested parts of rhizomes, or whole rhizomes if they don’t seem healthy. If you suspect borer problems, divide plants right after flowering and you might save some rhizomes before they SEE REICH, PAGE F6

More than 20 years ago, the Kovels’ newspaper column wrote about a table with a top that was made to look like an American flag. In September, a similar table is being sold by Woody Auction. The Kovel table had 23 stars on the flag. Maine was the 23rd state, added in 1820. The table being sold at Woody has 35 stars, suggesting it was made to honor the statehood of West Virginia in 1863. The 35-star table was marked by the maker: “Made & Designed by F. Wedin, Roxbury.” Recent research by the auction gallery suggests he was a piano maker from Massachusetts. Both tables were made of solid wood with inlaid stars and stripes. The wavy edges of the 35-star table make it look windblown. It has a drawer with carvings of dueling pistols, side supports

WASHINGTON

Long-term U.S. mortgage rates near historic lows U.S. long-term mortgage rates remained near historically low levels this week against a backdrop of volatile financial markets around the globe. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday the average rate on the benchmark 30-year loan was unchanged at 3.60%, its lowest level since November 2016. A year ago the rate stood at 4.53%. The average mortgage rate for 15-year, fixed-rate home loans edged up to 3.07% from 3.05% the week before. Continued anxiety over

the U.S.-China trade war and slowing global economic growth made for a rocky ride in the markets. On Wednesday, U.S. stocks plunged after the bond market sent out a fairly reliable warning signal of recession. The whipsawed markets have sent investors fleeing from stocks to the safety of bonds, pushing bond interest rates to record lows. The yield on the key 10-year U.S. Treasury note — which influences long-term mortgage rates — briefly fell

Wednesday below the yield on the 2-year Treasury for the first time since 2007. That inverted yield curve suggests that bond investors expect growth to slow so much that the Federal Reserve will soon feel compelled to slash shortterm rates to try to support the economy. As a sign of economic pessimism, the inversion sent U.S. stocks tumbling Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average diving 800 points, or 3%. The climate of low home

borrowing rates has sparked a flurry of activity by prospective homebuyers as well as owners looking to refinance mortgages. Mortgage applications for home purchases increased 2% in the week ending Aug. 9 from a week earlier, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported. Refinance applications jumped 37% to a three-year high. Freddie Mac surveys lenders across the country between Monday and Wednesday each week to compile its mortgage rate figures.

The average doesn’t include extra fees, known as points, which most borrowers must pay to get the lowest rates. The average fee on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages fell this week to 0.5 point from 0.6 point. The average fee for the 15year mortgage was unchanged at 0.5 point. The average rate for fiveyear adjustable-rate mortgages slipped to 3.35% from 3.36% the previous week. The fee remained at 0.3 point. — Associated Press
