Hunzinger’s daybed a ‘Modern Gothic’ piece

G

EORGE HUNZINGer (1835-1898) was born in Germany and trained as a cabinetmaker. In 1855, he emigrated to the United States and started making his own style of furniture, chairs and tables made of wood or wire — inspired by pipes, machinery and his 21 patented designs and methods. Hunzinger invented or improved extension, swivel top and nesting tables; reclining and folding chairs; platform rockers; convertible beds; and a woven seat made of fabric-covered wire. A woven wire bed was sold recently by Neal Auction Company. It had an adjustable back and curved arms, but most importantly, it still had the original fabric-wrapped metal wire webbing Hunzinger patented in 1879. It sold for $3,125. This new material cut the cost of making a chair, and he sold his novel chairs for the low price of $30. Collectors have no trouble recognizing Hunzinger’s work because most of it is stamped with his name and the patent date. He made copies of his furniture in a variety of wood finishes and upholstery materials that were bought by a diverse range of customers. And he had sales offices, agents and catalogs in many

countries. Hunzinger furniture was very different from the period designs, and the Neal catalog called the daybed a “Modern Gothic” piece.

O

NE OF THE ORIGInal “trace, cut and assemble” do-it-yourself projects created by U-Bild founder Steve Ellingson in the late 1940s, this little rocking horse is nicknamed “Slivers.” His unique design, made up of just 17 pieces traced from full-size patterns, was inspired by Mrs. Ellingson’s sewing patterns. The patterns made it simple for any woodworker — even beginners — to get great results Since then, “Slivers” has become an heirloom in countless families. Built from a single piece of 1-by-12 lumber, the project is as inexpensive as it is easy. Designed with safety in mind, it features rounded edges and a limited rocking motion that makes it difficult to tip. Construction is simple and requires only common tools. Just trace the pieces onto wood, cut out and sand. Next, assemble the pieces using screws and glue. Finally, paint and seal with a clear finish. The rocking horse measures 32 inches long by 26 inches tall by 12 inches wide.

Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday the rate on the 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage increased to 3.56% from 3.49% the week before. Average rates on the benchmark loan have remained below 3.6% for four straight weeks — the first time that’s happened since the fourth quarter of 2016. A year ago, the 30-year rate stood at 4.6%. The average rate for 15-year, fixedrate home loans rose to 3.09% from 3% the previous week. Mortgage rates fell sharply over the summer as a slowing global econo-

The moves could indicate that both sides are settling in for an extended conflict even as they prepare for talks in Washington aimed at ending the dispute that threatens global economic growth. Investors continue to expect the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at its policymaking meeting next week in another bid by the central bank to help maintain U.S. economic growth. Hibiscus surprises with ability to grow in north

DON’T KNOW IF I should begin with a Southern, drawling “hi-i-i- or move on to even warmer, tropical climes and speak out the whole name with a friendly Hawaiian lilt. Either way, hibiscus does not seem to me to be a plant you would find growing this far north. Yet it does, and after a characteristically slow start in spring, the bold, colorful flowers are staring out from perennial beds or with their backs against rock walls and house foundations, This isn’t just one kind of plant that we’re talking about, though. Not every one of the couple of hundred or more hibiscus species is as striking as the ones now lighting up gardens. But a few of them are making significant contributions to the show. Strangely enough, as you go north, the kinds of hibiscuses that you cannot grow outdoors are those whose smaller flowers look more subdued and less tropical. I cannot help but jump a little each time I see blos-

soms on one of the hardiest hibiscuses, rose mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos, also known as hardy hibiscus). Each flower is the size of a dinner plate, with white, pink, or crimson petals and a protruding proboscis of reproductive organs dusted yellow with pollen. Looking something like a hollyhock — a close relative — that has been pumped up with steroids, rose mallow’s flowers are stunning, if not pretty. Perhaps this is just what we northerners need in a flower before cold weather sets in. Only slightly more subdued than rose mallow, and also inhabiting swampy areas from Canada down to Florida, is another hibiscus species, smooth marsh mallow. With flowers 4 to 6 inches across, I still would not call this one low key. The flowers are pink or white, and, like its cousin, smooth marsh mallow reaches about 6 feet in height. Let’s travel southward now to the marshes and ditches of Georgia and Florida. Here we’ll find scarlet hibiscus flowering. Kendall to Tod A. O’Brien and Erin H. O’Brien, 9 Deerfield Drive, $527,000. WORTHINGTON William H. Gebel and Karima A. Gebel to Nancy N. Brown, 89 Lindsey Hill Road, $295,000.

This one also has 6-inch flowers in white, pink, purple, or, of course, scarlet. But part of this plant’s boldness comes from the 10 foot stalks on which its flowers perch. Because scarlet hibiscus is supposed to be able to endure cold only to about zero or 10 degrees, you’d think it impossible to grow this species this far north. Well, t’ain’t necessarily so. Hibiscus plants blossom on new shoots, so the woody stems need not survive winter for a plant to blossom. As long as the roots survive, they send up new shoots in spring, and these shoots make flower buds, then blossoms, generally as summer days shorten. Ground temperatures never drop as low as air temperatures in winter, and can stay comfortably warm for hibiscus roots under a thick blanket of some fluffy mulch, such as straw or

autumn leaves. A scarlet hibiscus that I have growing along the edge of my vegetable garden bears testimony to the ability of this truly southern HI-I-I-biscus to grow in the north when mulched. The stems are now a mere 4 feet in height. They would have grown more if I had thought ahead to pull back the mulch early in the season to let spring sunshine warm the ground and get growth started sooner. Next year. The plant has yet to bloom, although its flower buds, like those of other large flowered hibiscuses, put on quite a show of their own. Each looks like a sculpted, green amulet cradled in a wiry cage. OK, there are some hibiscuses that, even mulched, could not endure our winters. One is Hawaiian hibiscus, a large shrub or medium-sized tree. The flowers are usually scarlet,

sometimes yellow, orange, or white, but they are a mere 2 to 3 inches across, so Hawaiian hibiscus may not be a show stopper from the road. It’s still a real beauty, though, with dark green leaves that shine as if buffed with wax and the plant thoroughly drenched in blossoms. You can, in fact, grow Hawaiian hibiscus this far north. Just plant it in a pot and bring the pot indoors for the winter. The plant could use a rest at that time, so keep it cool and on the dry side. Come spring, move Hawaiian hibiscus outside and give it the same conditions enjoyed by other hibiscuses: abundant water and plenty of sunshine. Any gardening questions?
