ouseplants are a quick and easy way to dress your home in autumnal color. Anthuriums can add hues of pink, red or white. The philodendron’s cascading, heartshaped green leaves bring a touch of the outdoors inside. And of course, the poinsettia’s red and green foliage is a popular choice for holiday décor. It’s no secret — houseplants are back in style. “They are naturally chaotic and provide great contrast to the structure of a room and its furnishings,” says Sarah Cole, a Boston-area interior designer. “They bring life, literally, to a room.” But with so many houseplant varieties, how’s a neophyte to choose? If you are new to the crazy, cool world of houseplants, don’t fear: Instagram is here to help. On the photo-sharing social media platform, houseplants and their owners have carved a niche under hashtags like

The glazes usually have a matte or high gloss finish, but not crackle. Crackle is the name given to glaze that is intentionally decorated with fine cracks that form during the piece’s cooling down process. It’s a deliberate effect. Crazing is a network of fine lines or cracks in the glazed surface that is accidental. Lithophanes are made by casting clay in layers of different thicknesses. When the lamp is turned on, the pictures appear three-dimensional. Most lithophanes were made between 1825 and 1875. Lamps with lithophane shades sell for a few hundred dollars. Value of the shade alone is about half as much. SEE ANTIQUES, PAGE F7

LD TOOLS CAN BE hard to identify because many are no longer used. A carved ivory leg with a little wheel at the top looks like it might be a toy or a drawing aid, but it would be odd to make a tool of ivory. This auction item, recently sold by Eldred’s Auctions, is a pie crimper, probably made by a sailor to give to a girlfriend or mother. It sold for $3,600 as an interesting, decorated piece of folk art. Those who bake pies know that the wheel is used to cut or seal decorative edges of a pie crust. But there is another bit of history that makes this antique interesting. In the 1950s when we started writing about antiques, the identification of unfamiliar objects was based on old letters, ads, family stories and guesses. Today, most of the conclusions are considered myths. Sailors had time to carve many small ivory objects, often as gifts. Parts of the human body were considered erotic, and at various times the ankle, leg, neck, bust, buttocks, long hair or even total nudity were featured in paintings and pictures to set a risque mood. But today the story of the ankle or the leg is considered a myth. Women usually wore boots, long stockings and long skirts for comfort

INALLY, I CAN ANswer my daughter. Genevieve has always been especially fond of the green beans that I grow. Years ago I decided to grow a purple podded variety, Royal Burgundy, and as four-year-old Genevieve and I plucked pods from the plants, she turned to me and asked why cooking turns the pods green. Which it does. Of course, I couldn’t, at that time, say, “Anthocyanins, my dear.” Now I can. It is anthocyanins that put the purple in purple green beans, as well as in purple broccolis, grapes, and plums. Anthocyanins are also what make roses and geraniums red, and cornflowers and delphiniums blue. They do not make yellows and oranges, though; those colors come from carotenoids, which also are responsible for certain reds in plants. In the case of beets and bougainvilleas, the red comes from yet another pigment, called betacyanin. But let’s get back to anthoFor a couple of reasons purple beans are purple — until they cyanins. It perhaps seems foolish to grow a purple vegetable if it is anyway going to turn green after you cook it. It’s not as if that purple color does anything for flavor. In nature, anthocyanins do have a purpose, though, attracting insects to flowers and protecting plants from ultraviolet radiation, which is why you find purple in many alpine plants. Sometimes, carrot shoulders exposed to sunlight even turn purple. Actually, that purple in

Mexican sunflower is colorful pollinator champion By Norman Winter Tribune News Service

Flaming orange flowers always catch my eye and the old-fashioned Mexican sunflower is still one of the best. There may be a revival happening with this plant that I have failed to notice. I belong to some Facebook groups dedicated to butterflies and pollinators and it appears the Mexican sunflowers are bringing them all across the country. It did my heart good to see so many people growing this flower that was chosen as an All-America Selections winner in 2000, 19 years ago. The Mexican Sunflower is known botanically as Tithonia rotundifolia and is indeed from Mexico and South America. Fiesta del Sol is a truly compact version that did very well in our trials with Mississippi State University. We had it planted with the Mexican bush sage, Salvia leucantha and the large African marigolds which are really from Mexico too. So, after I started watching the reports and photos with butterflies, I decided to scope out plants and see how the pollinators of Georgia liked them. It seems just about almost every species of butterfly loves this flower as do bees and hummingbirds. If you are like me and are into pollinators, too, then we all need to put this flower in our habitats. I like the combinations I am seeing as well. There were partnerships with the icy blue Evolvulus flowers and others with the native mistflower, Conoclinium coelestinum which was is also a butterfly magnet. I promise if you have success with the old-fashioned tall zinnia you will find success with the Tithonia. It seems they are not as prevalent at the garden center as they use to be but seeds are always there, which means we can sow them much like a zinnia. Do plan on give your finished transplants plenty of room. Crowded conditions with poor air circulation usually-leads to unhappiness, much

like it does with every other plant. As mentioned, Fiesta del Sol will reach 2- to 3-feet tall. The torch is a 6-foot plus monster, that I still love. It’s fun shooting photos of butterflies looking up to flowers on plants taller than you. Sundance is a beautiful variety in name and color and is touted as reaching 4-feet tall. Let me admit I have not grown it. Most gardeners while they say they love it will also say it, too, gets much taller. Goldfinger is reported as compact as is a stunning mix called Arcadian Blend. Prepare beds by incorporating 3- to 4-inches of organic matter and 2 pounds of a slow-release 12-6-6 fertilizer per 100 square feet of bed space. Direct-seed, or set out transplants that have little to no color showing. Thin seedlings to the correct spacing as recommended for your variety for the vigorous growth that is about to occur. The largest ones I have been watching are 3- to 4-feet wide so you may want a little wider spacing. Mulch when the seedlings are large enough or after setting out transplants. Side-dress the young plants in six to eight weeks with light applications of fertilizer. The Mexican sunflower looks like the quintessential cottage garden flower, especially when partnered with blue salvias and zinnias. The Fiesta del Sol variety would also excel artistically as

the thriller plant in designer mixed containers. Most reading this column will have to wait to plant until next spring but warmer regions can start now. Whether you choose a named variety or go generic you can expect Monarchs, Swallowtails, Sulphurs and even the intricate

This Giant Swallowtail butterfly finds the Tithonia or Mexican sunflower to be the perfect feast. (Norman Winter photo)s

Hairstreaks. You will also have hummingbirds that will make the garden a spectacle of nature. You will ask yourself how you could have ever forgotten this beloved flower.
