Bids flood in for ‘Noah’s Ark’ movie clock
W
hen an unfamiliar, puzzling item comes up at auction there is often no previous sale to give a hint of the value. So when this Warner Bros. Pictures clock was offered at a William Morford sale, the catalog just said “minimum bid $100.” The cast iron is shaped like an ark. It has a clock face and the “clock” runs a short time when the ark is rocked. The clock face shows scenes from the 1928 movie “Noah’s Ark”— a part “talkie” movie. There were several collectors who probably wanted movie memorabilia who bid until the final price was $855. If there had been no description of how and why it worked, the ark might not have even sold. We researched the name of the maker, Art Metal Works, and learned it was started by Louis Aronson (1869-1940), an inventor with a company in New York City, then Newark, New Jersey. The company is famous for the Ronson lighter patented in 1910. (No doubt Aronson inspired the name.) The company was sold to Zippo in 2010.

These miniature hats and hatboxes were not free. They were gift certificates someone paid for. The box included a gift certificate for a new hat, so you could give someone a gift of a hat and they could choose it themselves. Miniature Stetson hats are the most often found but other hat manufacturers also made miniature hats and hat boxes to promote their brands. Miniature Stetson hats were made in felt and in plastic. Hatboxes were usually made of paper or cardboard, though some were made of tin. Some boxes just have the brand name, some are decorated. A check of recent sales shows a felt hat in a tin hatbox for $40 and a plastic hat in a cardboard hatbox for $24 to $40.

Give this A-frame an ‘A’ for excellence
NE OF THE MOST popular choices for second homes, a classic A-frame combines the features most often desired in a vacation retreat. This do-it-yourself version is no exception: attractive, affordable, simple and strong, it features an open floor plan, ample sleeping and storage space and a spacious deck. With 700 square feet of living space, the design includes a kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedroom and deck on the first floor. Upstairs, there are two more bedrooms and a balcony perfect for enjoying the A central fireplace provides view. heat for both floors.
The classic A-frame design makes the cabin relatively
simple (and affordable) to build. Two large A-frames connected by a central beam form the basic structure, and the roof is made of plywood panels. The foundation consists of nine concrete piers, minimizing the need for grading. It’s a big project, but it’s also fun, highly satisfying and a valuable investment. The A-Frame Cabin plan, No. 381, is $9.95 and includes complete floor plans and elevation drawings with all dimensions, construction directions with 10 photos, a detailed materials list and a toll-free help line for project
questions. Do-it-yourselfers should be aware that some alterations may be necessary to conform to local building codes. A package of cabin plans, No. C81, is $22.95 and includes this plan and two others. Please include $4 for postage and handling and allow about two weeks for delivery. Some houseplants are tougher than the rest
S
PIDER PLANTS, split-leaf philodendrons, and rubber trees don’t always look forlorn; they really can be lush and beautiful. These plants often take on that downtrodden look because of their uncanny abilities to survive. Yes, they survive — even grow — in the far from ideal growing conditions of our homes, but eventually they just can’t keep up appearances. A spider plant’s trick to survival lies in its roots. If you have ever repotted one of these plants, you have seen those white, fleshy, podlike swellings below ground. These vesicles, as they are called, store moisture for when we forget to water. And eventually any spider
plant needs plenty of water, what with all the baby plantlets dangling over the sides of the pot on the ends of arching stems. These plantlets’ roots, also dangling in midair, do nothing to replenish the water given off by the plantlets’ leaves. The toughness of a rubber tree comes from its “rubbery” leaves. Although large and lush looking — generally not the ideal for survival of a houseplant — rubber trees’ leaves have waxy surfaces that prevent excessive loss of moisture. The leaves are also stiff, so they keep their perky look over a wide range of conditions. It’s harder to account for the toughness of split-leaf philodendrons. Yet tough they are: I had one survive for years in
my living room even though in a dark corner and constantly bathed in the dry, hot air of a nearby hot air register. The plant never did die. I eventually got rid of it because of its forlorn appearance. And that’s the fate of many such tough houseplants — they become compost not because they die but because they are no longer worth looking at. Spider plants become pale and overgrown, crowded with youngsters and the mother plant starting to push itself up and out of the pot. Under poor growing conditions, split-leaf philodendrons develop leaves that are small and no longer worthy of the plant’s other name, Swiss cheese plant. As for a rubber tree, its leaves stay large and crisp,
even green, but they become so few and far between that the plant takes on the look of an artificial tree whose leaves have been grudgingly attached. Yet these plants do not have to look so forlorn. Mostly what they need is more light, especially the rubber tree. Increased light will green up a spider plant, put holes in new philodendron leaves, and shorten the spaces between new leaves of a rubber tree. Fortunately, all these plants are easy to multiply. So if a rubber tree or philodendron already has too many widely spaced or solid leaves, all you have to do is to lop the top off either and let your old plant live on as a rooted cutting. Light isn’t the only thing needed to keep any of these
tough plants looking their best. Regular watering and occasional fertilizer also help. And repot the plants into new potting soil when they outgrow their containers. Alas, with even the best care, none of these plants is going to compare with their counterparts growing under native conditions. In the tropics, intense sunlight and steamy air coax rubber trees to spread their limbs as wide as our maples, limbs dense with foliage and dripping thin aerial rootlets. After seeing one such fine specimen in Puerto Rico, I could no longer bear to look at my own relatively spindly rubber tree. Come visit Lee Reich’s garden online at leereich.com.
