Nothing like copper in cool season baskets Heuchera adds beauty to any landscape

You have to admit there is something about winter copper. Copper is a color we most often associate with fall and the changing of the leaves. But when using it in cool-season baskets and containers, you can let your artistic imagination run wild. The obvious is a fancy foliage pal with blue pansies for a complementary color scheme gone wild. In actuality, pansies and Heuchera of all colors look like they were meant-to-be married together. Copper-colored Heucheras like Southern Comfort and the new Primo Peachberry Ice will excel with the dark-colored Redbor kale and Swiss chard. To be bold, try combining with Lemon Coral sedum or Goldilocks lysimachia, both offering a wonderful partnership of lime. My Color Guru son, James, pushed my comfort zone to the max this year with several baskets and containers at the exclusive shopping complex known as The Landings in Columbus, Ga. Here he combined copper with silver and my first thought was NO. We see it every day in pocket change, but in cool-season foliage? Holy Smokes and Shazam, I can’t take my eyes off them. The silver comes from what

of a few different kinds. Predatory mites and all that dusting and humidifying might keep a mite infestation from getting too out of hand, but more might be needed to get rid of a fullblown mite attack. The first counterattack, then, is to get more heavy handed with water. Move a plant into the shower stall and blast it with a forceful jet of water, especially the undersides of the leaves. If that’s not enough, add some insecticidal soap to the spray. If that’s not enough, you may have to give infested plants a spray of one of the light oils made for this purpose. You can actually kill mites that have burrowed deep into buds, such as cyclamen mites do
on African violets, by immersing the whole plant in hot water, 110 degrees for 15 minutes. Even more severe infestations could require a spray of sulfur, with care, though, because sulfur can damage a plant, leaves a visible residue, and stinks. Always be alert to the possibility of mites spreading from one plant to the next. With its small size, a mite can step off a leaf and expect to be ballooned by the slightest air current over to the next plant. Other mites just drop to the ground and walk over to the next plant. Quarantining a new plant for a month could give you time to see whether it is healthy enough to mingle with your other plants. In a similar vein, an option always worth considering when you have a mite infested plant in hand is to merely discard it. Any gardening questions? A primer on home insurance What does it cover and how much do you need? By Michele Lerner
Special To The Washington Post
Homeowner’s insurance is an essential protection for a major financial investment: your home. Lenders require homeowner’s insurance to protect their interest in your home. But insurance policies vary, and sometimes homeowners and buyers find it difficult to understand what’s covered, when to file a claim and how homeowner’s insurance differs from a home warranty. We asked Justin Fox, broker and owner of Re/Max Professionals in Cottage Grove, Minnestoa, to share information he provides home buyers about property insurance.
policy. There are specific policies or endorsements that can be added to your policy to cover a home that is under construction, which can address more specific risks related to a work zone. Hiring a reputable contractor that is licensed and insured can help protect you from risks during and following construction projects.
Q. What wouldn’t homeowner’s insurance cover?
A. Most homeowner’s
insurance covers personal liabilities beyond just those occurring at the property; however, those liabilities are limited and specific to each policy.
Homeowner’s policies will be either a “named peril” policy, which only cover losses due to events specifically listed, or a “special peril” policy, which covers any loss unless the cause is specifically excluded.

Q. How does homeowner’s insurance differ from a home warranty?
A.
Generally, home warranties cover losses and expenses on mechanical components of your home due to age, such as furnace failures, while homeowner’s insurance covers loss and expenses due to events, such as hail, fire, wind and the like. Some homeowner’s insurance carriers do have an optional endorsement for equipment breakdown, but that’s the exception, not the rule.
