Is it a great table or is it a work of art?
sidered art? Recently, an unusual table made of glass and “stone” was offered in an Andrew Jones auction in Los Angeles, with an estimated price of $2,500 to $3,500. It didn’t sell, but other related sculptures by the artist, Woods Davy (1949-), have sold from $1,000 to $7,000. Davy first collected natural stones and turned them into sculptures without altering the shapes. Then he started making “stones” that look like they came from a riverbed using concrete, metal and glass. He positions them in impossible, strangely balanced shapes, which are held together by concealed steel rods and adhesives. This table is 22 inches high with a round glass top 42 inches in diameter. Poking through the glass is a rock with its top 28 inches from the floor. He used old natural forms in a new unbalanced way, which is known as postmodernism. That is the name of an unusual period of art developed in the 1950s that fuses past styles with the look of modern magazines, films and other unexpected sources. But is this just a great table? Or is it art?

A. This mark was used
by the F. Wessel Porcelain Manufactory in Frankenthal, Germany. The company was founded by Friedrich Wilhelm Wessel in 1949 and made porcelain figurines, gift items and household goods. The factory closed before 1964. Wessel wasn’t supposed to use “Dresden” as part of his mark because he wasn’t
located in Dresden. It was probably an attempt to make his porcelain seem to be the same quality as that made or decorated in Dresden.

With fruit plants, don’t bite off more than you can chew
F
ruit plants look as enticing now, in catalogs, as they taste in summer and fall, bearing fruit. But don’t bite off more than you can chew. When planning what fruits to grow, make sure every plant has enough elbow room. A strawberry plant needs its 1 square foot of space and a full-size apple tree needs its 500 square feet of space, in each case so the plant’s leaves bask in sunlight and drying breezes. Such conditions promote more fruit and fewer pest problems. The distance to set any plant away from other plants, your house, or a wall depends on how big the plant will eventually grow. Eventual plant size is determined by the richness of the soil, pruning, and a plant’s inherent vigor. Expect less growth in a poor, gravelly soil than in a rich clay loam, unless you fertilize and water diligently. You can keep a plant down to almost any size by pruning. This is how cordon apple trees — each just single stems of fruits — get to thrive planted only 2 feet apart. Except in cases of extreme soil conditions, or careful and constant pruning on your part,
the inherent vigor of a plant will be the main determinant of its ultimate size. With some kinds of fruits, you can choose the eventual size of plant you want, from dwarf to full size. A fruit plant might be dwarf because it is naturally small or because it is grafted onto a special dwarfing rootstock. A Northblue blueberry bush is naturally small and will never grow to the size of, for example, a naturally larger Bluecrop blueberry bush. A McIntosh apple, however, might become a 25-foot tree on one rootstock (MM 111), a 15-foot tree on another rootstock (MM 106), or only a 6-foot tree on yet another rootstock (M 27). McIntosh fruits will taste identical from any of these trees. But the Northblue fruits are different from the Bluecrop fruits. An advantage of dwarf over full-size trees is that they are easier to manage. You have less need to climb ladders or onto the branches. Most or all pruning, thinning and harvesting can be done with both feet planted firmly on the ground. Smaller plants are also easier to spray should this be necessary. Another advantage of smaller plants is that you can cram more of them into a given area. Instead of 6 bushels of fruit from one large McIntosh tree, you could harvest a couple of bushels each of Spigold, Mutsu, Gravenstein,
and Macoun apples from four dwarf trees occupying the same space as would that single large tree. Not only do you get more variety in apples, but because small trees use sunlight more efficiently than do large trees, you also harvest more apples. Or you could plant a couple of dwarf apples, dwarf peaches, and dwarf plums in that same space. With more and smaller trees, you can harvest a greater variety of fruits and spread out the harvest over a longer season. That said, a full-size tree might better suit your needs. Perhaps you enjoy putting up a mess of applesauce all at once. Generally, large trees also tolerate drought, poor fertility and other adverse soil conditions better than do dwarf trees. With age, a large tree develops a majestic quality and provides shade and limbs upon which to climb. And besides, for some kinds of fruits, you have no choice in tree size. Space large fruit trees at least 20 feet apart, medium-sized trees 15 feet apart, and small ones 8 feet apart. If you plant more than a row of trees, allow more spacing between rows, because at these spacings the

make attractive, edible hedges, in which case you could set plants as close as 4 feet apart to let them form a continuous row of plants. Any gardening questions? A classic in two editions
A
t home in almost any room, a bookcase is one of the few pieces of furniture that embody the ideal marriage of form and function.
In fact, when it comes to furniture design, a well-made bookcase is as much a classic as the books it is designed to display and protect. This do-it-yourself version is no exception. Equally at home in both casual and traditional surroundings, it’s really two classics in one. The secret is in the details — in addition to the informal, Craftsman-style detailing pictured, the bookcase includes a finishing option that gives the project a more formal, elegant appearance.

Turn your home into a happy place Achieving a happy home is possible, even when you’re a couple with different design aesthetics in mind.
recommend is stepping back and asking yourself, “If I could wave a magic wand and change just one thing about my home right now, what would it be?” The answer will be different for everyone. Sometimes it’s about getting rid of something, such as a piece of furniture that reminds you of an old relationship. Sometimes it’s about selling something that was “expensive,” which makes you feel guilty for hating it, and replacing it with something you love. There are exercises in my book, “Happy Starts at Home,” to help you answer these questions.
Q. What paint colors in a bedroom are joyful?
Design psychology coach Rebecca West shares tips on how to achieve home happiness The Washington Post
Rebecca West, a design psychology coach, interior designer and founder of Seriously Happy Homes, joined staff writer Jura Koncius recently for The Washington Post’s Home Front online chat. Here is an edited excerpt.
Q. What should you do
if what makes you happy does not make your partner happy, such as clutter and organization?
A.
I see this a lot, and I find the key is to have a conversation not about the clutter, but
about your combined goals. If the cluttery ones can express what the clutter brings to their life (happy memories, or maybe they need to see stuff to know that it exists) and if the tidy ones can express how the clutter is a hardship (maybe it creates a lot of stress or embarrassment), then you can start to understand what each person needs and try to find a way to solve for both. Maybe the clutter goes into a couple of rooms, or maybe there’s a monthly tidying session. There is nearly always a good compromise if you can start by understanding where the other person is coming from.
Q. I have $300 to spend
on something for my home that will make me happy. What would you recommend to get the most “happy” for my money?
A.
I truly believe that having a happy home does not require having a ton of money. I had to make over my entire home on a recently divorced, unemployed budget before I launched my career, so I know it can be done. For me, paint is one of my favorite makeover tools. It is amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do to a room and how you feel in it. What I really

A.
When clients ask me this, obviously I can answer with colors I find joyful, but I’d rather dig into what you find joyful. I find the easiest way to do that is to go on Houzz or Pinterest and, without overthinking it, choose 10 bedroom images that spark joy. Choose 10 rooms that you would love to come home to. Then look at all 10 thumbnails at one time; I’ll bet you’ll see consistencies in color and design, such as all clean lines, a splash of color and bright white walls. Or classic, traditional lines, soft and luxurious bedding, and cozy-colored walls. We all have things that we find

Go to your sock drawer or your linen closet, and get rid of one or two things that you no longer like or need. Or just change a burned-out lightbulb or sweep the porch. Tiny things build momentum.
Q. Do you have any ad-
vice for couples who have design differences? One is very traditional, and the other is modern.
A. It’s not uncommon for
couples to have different design aesthetics, and marrying modern and traditional can be a special challenge. I always recommend starting with getting on the same visual page. Try going on Houzz or Pinterest individually and each choosing 10 examples of the room you have in mind to change, such as 10 bedrooms or 10 living rooms. Once you each have 10 rooms that you would be super happy to come home to, compare ideas. Ask each other what they like about the room and how it makes them feel. Look for things your rooms have in common. No matter what, make it a visual conversation; words get in the way, for sure.
