Stove is hot item on collectible market
toves were often the largest objects in the room of 18th- and 19th-century homes. It was needed for heat and cooking.
Cast iron stoves came in many styles, most cast with curlicues and pictures formed by a mold. Special stoves had extra trim, a few tiles on the front or a complete set of tiles showing people, architecture or greenery. A very unusual stove made about 1895 was covered in English Minton and Wedgwood tiles picturing the 12 months of the year, fairy tales and nursery rhymes created by Walter Crane for two of his 1887 children’s books, and other Crane drawings of fairy tales and Aesop’s fables. Additional tiles were copies of pictures of the month by Helen Miles in the 1870s. The buyer also got the stove’s impressive provenance: a family scrapbook that identified previous owners, including the founder of Hobart Brothers of Troy New York, and a pictured article in Colonial Homes Magazine from 1994. Even though the stove had been converted to gas and would cost a lot to ship, it sold for $4,688.

A little pest that will divert your attention
E
ven as I am increasingly drawn to the outdoor garden scene, a little pest keeps diverting my attention back indoors.
sucking. And that’s about it for many female scale insects: A few hours or days of walking around, find a place to eat, then stay put for the rest of your life. No wonder some of these females shed their legs and antennae —who needs ’em. You would think that having wings would put a little sparkle into the lives of the grownup males. Hardly. As adults, the males do not feed at all. They just fly around and mate — but for only a few hours, then die. That stickiness bothers me and reminds me what the insects are doing to my plants, so, sympathies notwithstanding, I do keep these scale insects in check. Controlling scale insects is not all that easy, because even though those females just sit in place eating, they grow a protective shield — the scale — over their bodies. The protective shield also protects the new babies, until
they crawl out, of course. And that’s a good time to get them, especially outdoors, with a relatively nontoxic spray of oil or lime-sulfur. The oil to use is a specially refined one, a “dormant oil” for use on leafless plants, a “summer oil” or “superior oil” for use on leafy plants. Never spray oil and lime-sulfur together or you’ll harm the plant, or lime-sulfur indoors or you’ll stink up your house. Hand-to-hand combat is my usual tactic against scale insects indoors. I might use my fingernail to flick them off, or a paper towel soaked in alcohol to rub down infested leaves or stems. Dislodging a scale insect breaks its mouthpart so it can never feed again. Insecticidal soap also works against scale insects, but I’d rather take my fern into the shower and soap it up there than puff sprays around the house. Oil sprays, soap sprays, hand
to hand combat, and showers need to be repeated every week or two in order to catch young that crawled out from under their protective coverings since the last treatment. You can buy natural parasites and predators to keep continual tabs on scale insects, but they are more effective in a greenhouse than home setting. I once got rid of scale insects heavily infesting some branches on my bay laurel by just lopping off those branches. The plant needed pruning anyway. The easiest approach for a plant that is thoroughly infested is to just dump it. Different kinds of scale insects — and there are thousands — are

somewhat choosy about the kinds of plants they attack, but why risk spreading contagion from a heavily infested plant to your others? Unfortunately, I cannot yet implement my favorite control for the scale insects on my staghorn fern. That control involves nothing more than moving the plant outdoors. There, some combination of environmental conditions and/or natural predators and parasites always rid the plant of scale insects — from spring through fall, at least. Any gardening questions? Email them to me at garden@ leereich.com and I’ll try answering them directly or in this column. Come visit my garden at leereich.com/blog.

No, this pest never screams for attention, it just nudges me with the sticky stuff it drips on the smooth wooden floor beneath a hanging staghorn fern. That sticky stuff is a honeydew secreted by the pest, scale insects, who I am now battling, just as I do every winter and increasingly so as spring approaches. Even staring right at the fern, I can hardly find the culprits. Ah, there’s a few. Nothing dramatic, though, just an occasional shiny, brown bump about an eighth of an inch across. The scale insects that attacked the bark of another of my plants, a bay laurel, were even less noticeable as their color blended with that of the bark. Some trees — cherry, for example — have natural bumps on their bark, in which case a flick with a thumbnail tells me whether a bump is supposed to be there. The scale comes off easily. Eventually, if I neglected my plants long enough and brown bump upon brown bump of scale insects piled up next to each other, I suppose they would be very noticeable. By then, of course, I might have noticed wilted or yellowed leaves, perhaps even that the plant was dead. Or my feet might have stuck fast to the floor as I tried to walk by. Perhaps these scale insects warrant some sympathy, for they do lead such drab lives. After hatching from eggs or being born live, the babies crawl around for a few hours or days until they find a place on a plant at which to settle down. There, they put their mouthparts into the plant and start
Small, brown bumps on these leaves are not part of the plant, but are a type of “scale” insect which is literally sucking energy from this plant.

Just the thing to help ring in spring
P
ERFECT FOR DOit-yourselfers who enjoy gardening (or have a gardener in the family), this quick and easy planter project is just the thing for spring. Featuring wheels that make it easy to follow the sun and three removable trays (for fresh-cut blooms or potted plants), the project is designed to look like an old-fashioned flower cart. It’s also simple and inexpensive to build. The planter requires a single half-sheet of 1/2-inch plywood, a smaller piece of 3/4-inch plywood (for the wheels), two hardwood dowels, glue, nails and paint. Except for a few straight cuts, all of the pieces are traced from full-size patterns. Perfect for beginners, construction is simple. First, trace the pieces onto ply-
wood, cut out and sand. Next, assemble everything using glue and nails. Finally, add a coat of paint, decorate with stencils (as pictured) or your own design and add plants. The project measures about 36 inches long by 20 inches wide by 30 inches tall. The Lawn and Patio Planter plan, No. 318, is $9.95 and includes step-by-step instructions with photos, traceable patterns, construction diagrams, a shopping list and cutting layout and a toll-free help line for project questions. A package of three other fun and easy planter plans, No. C103, is available for $21.95 and includes a cow planter, a deer planter trio and a donkey cart planter. The master suite - one of seven bedrooms and 7.5 bathrooms - includes a steam shower, spa tub and sauna with skylights. Covered patios and lofted lounges circle the palm-topped backyard. The outdoor space, clad in Saltillo tile, also has a swimming pool with a spa in addition to mountain views. Autry had a television show bearing his name from 1950 to 1956 and was in scores of films.
