give you a lot more information about the piece if you know the codes. They are used to indicate the shape or mold number, the type of clay or glaze used, the design number, catalog or product number, and size. Most are company product codes not explained to the public. A decorator or collector could hang this vintage sign in a living room or kitchen. Unusual advertising pieces are considered folk art or “interesting” and “decorative” — although in the 1950s, ads were only used in kitchens, playrooms or lavatories. Today they are featured as art, which is why this sign sold for more than $1,000.

Pruning your options for a most useful tool

f you’re going to buy just one tool for pruning, make it a pair of hand-held pruning shears. This is the tool you’ll use for pruning roses and for the majority of cuts on fruit plants, houseplants, and young ornamental trees and bushes. Better quality pruning shears cost more and are worth the extra money. But “better quality” can mean many things: a tool made from better materials; a tool designed to cut better; perhaps a tool that is more comfortable to use. I once tried pruning shears that, although shiny, expensive and made from high quality stainless steel, were not particularly comfortable to hold nor especially effective at cutting.

Pruning shears are useful tools that come in a variety of styles, so choose one that works well for you.

The best pruning shear for you is a personal choice. If possible, try a pruning tool once you have identified one within your desired price range. My personal favorite? ARS pruning shears. The business end of pruning shears has either anvil or bypass blades.

This mark was used by M.E. Bernhardt Co. of New York. The company sold pocket cigar lighters, gas lighters, wall lighters, fuse wicks and flints, and claimed to be the largest manufacturer of cigar lighters in the United States in the early 1920s. It imported lighters made in Austria and Germany by Hahway. TIP: Never carry a marble tabletop flat. It can break under its own weight. Carry it in a vertical position. cheaper than bypass shears — and the price difference is reflected in the resulting cut. Too often anvil blades crush part of the stem at the end of the cut. And if the two blades do not mate perfectly, the resulting cut is incomplete, leaving the severed stem hanging on by a thread of bark. That wide, flattened blade also makes it difficult to get the tool right up against the base of a stem you want to remove. Because a pair of hand shears is such a useful tool — one that you might drop into your back pocket each time you walk out to the garden — check the weight, the hand fit, and the balance of prospective candidates

before settling on one. Can the blades be removed for sharpening or replacement? A bypass pruner should have an adjustable tension screw, so blades can be made to close easily, yet be tight enough so they do not bind on a stem. Special features found on some pruning shears might have their appeal. Some shears are tailored to fit small hands or left hands. The blades of some bypass shears are hooked at their ends to help prevent a stem from slipping free of the jaws as you cut. Other shears achieve the same effect with a rolling action of one bypass blade along the other

PVC helps make the patio perfect

ITH WARM weather on the way, it’s time for do-it-yourselfers to get those outdoor spaces ready for summer. This year, make a big change with a small investment of time and money with some new outdoor furniture. The key is PVC. Easy and inexpensive to work with, PVC makes deck or patio furniture that’s attractive, durable, lightweight and easy to clean. Featuring two comfortable seats with a table in between, this classic twin-seater is no exception. The project is made from 50 feet of Schedule 40 PVC pipe, a few common pipe joints, a small piece of particle board (for the tabletop), some canvas, a couple of ready-made cushions and PVC glue. The only tools you need are a pipe cutter or hacksaw, a hammer, a pair of scissors, a tape measure, needle and thread and some sandpaper. There are plenty of “Full House” fans out there, but apparently none with pockets deep enough to buy the show’s famous home. The San Francisco Victorian — used to portray the Tanner family’s residence in the famous sitcom — listed last year for $5.999 million. With no takers, it’s back on the market for half a million less. The storied residence is owned by the show’s creator, Jeff Franklin, who bought it in 2016 for $4 million. Franklin has renovated the property, updating the living spaces with modern style and high-end finishes. The bright red front door seen on the sitcom has been painted a darker hue. Built in 1883 by Charles Hinkel Lewis, the home spans three stories in the Lower Pacific Heights neighborhood. Inside, there’s a living room with a marble fireplace, a lounge with built-ins, a den with a wet bar and a sunny dining area.

This 1880s Victorian-style home in San Francisco is known for portraying the Tanner family home on the sitcom “Full House.” (CHRISTOPHER STARK / TNS)

In the kitchen, which sports an island, royal blue cabinetry provides visual contrast against subway tile and skylights. Upstairs, the master suite features a walk-in closet and stylish bathroom. It’s one of four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms in about 3,700 square feet. Outside, an English garden with manicured hedges holds a dining area.

‘Alexa, turn on the shower’ Smart devices are changing the bathroom experience By Lindsey M. Roberts

Special to The Washington Post

One of the last places you might expect to talk to Alexa is the bathroom. But this most private of rooms is becoming smarter, with everything from voice-activated mirrors to aromatherapy shower heads. A popular toilet in Japan, the Toto Neorest, has a “heated seat, automated controls, bidet and memory sensors to provide a customized experience,” says Steve Kadlec, founder and principal of Kadlec Architecture and Design in Chicago. Because smart tech in the bathroom can quickly get pricey — smart toilets run up to around $17,000 — Kadlec recommends keeping costs down elsewhere. Update the throne room by cleaning the tile and grout, replacing shower curtains with glass panels and finding a large-format porcelain or ceramic tile for big impact on the floor. Also consider installing affordable heated floor mats under the tiles, he says. Greg Coccaro, co-founder of the home-goods store Beam in Brooklyn, also recommends paint and artwork, specifically warm hues to bring out warm tones in the skin. Small,

Give any pair of pruning shears care and you’ll be repaid with years of service. Dirt can nick or dull sharp edges, so give the blades an occasional wipe with an oil-dabbed rag. Clean sap off blades with a rag dipped in a solvent such as kerosene. Periodically apply oil to the bolt that joins the blades, and to the spring that spreads the handles.

Pruning shears cut most easily and quickly if their blades are sharp, and clean cuts heal quickest. On anvil shears, sharpen only one blade, and sharpen it on both sides. On bypass shears, sharpen both blades, each on its outside edge only. Even though pruning shears is the one tool to buy if you’re going to buy just one pruning tool, they are not for

pruning everything. Never attempt to shimmy and wiggle the tool through branches; this could hurt the plant and the shears. Stems huskier than about a halfinch across call for use of a lopper or pruning saw. And when it comes to nipping out shoot tips — outdoor chrysanthemums or indoor avocados, for example — no tool is more convenient or useful

than your thumbnail. For more about pruning tools as well as how to prune plants, see “The Pruning Book,” by me and available signed from leereich.com/ books. Any gardening questions?
