lthough a minimalist interior may have represented an aspirational environment only a few years ago, it seems that intermittent lockdowns and supply chain-induced shortages have led people to reevaluate the aesthetic of an empty house.

The result is a resurgence of maximalist home decor that embraces pattern, color and ornamentation. Cabinetry that may once have been wood grain is now jewel-toned; streamlined furniture has given way to all things squishy and wiggly; trends such as “cottagecore” and “grandmillennial” aim to elevate items that are handmade, chintzy and secondhand. Is it any wonder that fake food is back, too? Charcuterie and cheese candles, resin-cast croissants and Jell-O salad lamps are hot items. Retro-style fake cakes are big on Instagram. un sells faux glasses of spilled wine and melting ice cream cones alongside $10,000 engagement rings. And Yukiko Morita’s Pampshade lamps, which are made from real baked goods that have been preserved, can sell for around $80 apiece. For John Derian, founder of an eponymous home decor and decoupage line, the resurgence of fake food is very welcome. Derian has had a fake cake sitting on his kitchen counter for 14 years, he said, and he estimates that he has been selling foodthemed items in his store for

TIN SIGN PICTURing an attractive girl sold for $12,390, which is an impressive price for a portrait of a young woman from the 1910s! But if you look closer, you’ll see that the woman is holding a glass marked “Coca-Cola,” and the Coca-Cola logo is visible on the bottom of the frame. It’s not really a framed painting; it’s a self-framed tin lithographed sign. Collectors of Coca-Cola around the world may recognize her as Elaine, the girl on the company’s 1916 calendar.

about 20 years, starting with a stuffed doll made by Nathalie Lete that had sausages for arms and a steak for a head. “I do love funny things,” he said. These days, Derian also offers more elegant fake food items for customers who are less interested in kitsch, including stone bananas and cherries carved in Tuscany, Italy, using marble from the same quarry that Michaelangelo favored. Derian often displays the paraffin wax beauties — which include doughnuts, cakes and pies — in the window of his shop. “Everyone responds to them with joy,” he said. A question of taste Fake food has been used for decoration for centuries. Trompe l’oeil porcelain, made in 18th-century Europe, often took the form of fruit and vegetables, including melons and peas in a pod. There are examples of plates of fruit made from jade and alabaster from the Qing dynasty in China. In recent centuries, fake food has remained popular in more utilitarian settings. In Japan, fake food, or sampuru,

is displayed in the windows of restaurants, and can cost hundreds of dollars for artisans to make. In the U.S., fake wedding cakes can help preserve a visual tradition of a layered confectionery, while helping to cut down on the price of the real cake. But when it comes to fake food as objets d’art in the American home, Sarah Archer, a design and culture writer and the author of the 2019 book “The Midcentury Kitchen,” suggests looking back to the 1950s and 1960s, when fake food became a trend. “Blown-glass fruit was super popular in the ’50s and ’60s, especially after World War II, when it was more affordable and kind of interesting or enticing for middle-class Americans to travel abroad to Italy,” Archer said recently. American tourists would return from their journeys with glass apples or pears as souvenirs. For some of the artisans and brands that sell fake food today, the question of taste — or of questionable taste — is what drew them to the trend in the first place. Leanne Rodriguez, an artist in Oakland, California, who goes by Elrod, began making fake gelatin salad lamps during the pandemic. In a

recent interview, Rodriguez said she wanted the effect “to be a little on the disgusting side.” Using recipes for gelatin salads from midcentury cookbooks as inspiration, Rodriguez suspends hot dogs, vegetables and chopped fruit made out of clay in sparkly resin. Her creations, which she has branded Mexakitchen and sells as part of her Mexakitsch line of artwork, emanate an eerie glow from LED lights inside. Rodriguez said a fascination with kitsch is what drew her to make the lamps in the first place, and the more she makes them, the more opulent they get. “A lot of people don’t get it,” said Rodriguez, whose creations cost $100 to $3,500. “And the ones who do get it really love it.”

There’s something fun about it.” Rogers’ fake cake was made by Jasmine Archie, an artist in Austin, Texas, who has been surprised and delighted by the market for her eccentric, color-saturated confectionery-inspired creations. “People freaked out,” Archie, 25, said of the first few fake cakes she made. “It’s already on the market, but it was so untapped with my generation in my opinion. And I was like, ‘OK, I could totally market this and see what could happen.’” According to Etsy, there has been a 36% increase in searches for faux cakes on the site in the past three months, compared with the same time the previous year. A.

Thomas and Paul Ens founded Thomas & Ens Porcelain Factory in Marktredwitz, Bavaria, in 1903. They used “Th u E, Mr.” (German abbreviation for “Thomas and Ens, Marktredwitz”) as a mark until about 1908. Ens left the company in 1907. Thomas became an independent subsidiary of Rosenthal AG in 1908. The name “Thomas” was used in marks beginning in 1908. The word “Bavaria” without the word “Germany” indicates the mark was used no later than 1939. “Mentone” is the pattern name of a line of dinnerware made by the company, and “Sevres” is the series name. Porcelain production was moved from Marktredwitz to Speichersdorf in 1960. Thomas is still listed as one of Rosenthal’s brands. Tea sets like this are inexpensive, worth about $50-$100.

Classic in two editions

T HOME IN ALmost any room, a bookcase is one of the few pieces of furniture that embody the ideal marriage of form and function. In fact, when it comes to furniture design, a well-made bookcase is as much a classic as the books it’s designed to display and protect. This do-it-yourself version is no exception. Equally at home in both casual and traditional surroundings, it’s really two classics in one. The secret is in the details — in addition to the informal, Craftsman-style detailing pictured, the bookcase includes a finishing option that gives the project a more formal, elegant appearance. The project is easy enough for woodworkers of all skill levels, regardless of the style you choose. The design calls for mostly straight cuts, and includes full-size patterns for the curves and angles. Construction is simple — just cut out the pieces, sand, assemble and apply finish of choice. The bookcase measures 60 inches tall by 34 inches wide by 14 inches deep. The 2-in-1 Bookcase plan,

No. 907, is $9.95 and includes step-by-step directions with photos, full-size traceable patterns, construction diagrams, a shopping list and cutting schedule and a toll-free help line for project questions. Mistletoe doesn’t always bring holiday tidings

ISS ME UNDER THE mistletoe. This druid practice is all that remains from the many mistletoe legends of old European cultures. The sprig of mistletoe seems fairly innocuous, but it was not always so. Mistletoe was regarded by the ancients as having supernatural powers, sometimes evil and sometimes beneficent. Two thousand years ago, mistletoe was known by some as “all heal,” an herb that was brewed as an antidote for poisons and epilepsy, or worn as an amulet to ward off all diseases. Evidence of mistletoe’s ominous nature is found in Scandanavian mythology, which credits mistletoe with the destruction of the sun God, Baldur the Beautiful. Mistletoe is only a small wisp of a plant, so why would the ancients embody it with such awesome powers as healing, or overpowering gods? The reason is because mistletoes are capable of killing large trees, even the massive oaks venerated by the druids.

This green tuft on a tree’s bark is mistletoe, feeding off the tree as it grows. (LEE REICH PHOTO)

Mistletoes are parasitic plants. They nestle into the branches of a host tree, penetrate the bark, and sap nutrients and water from the tree. In so doing, they weaken the tree and, in some cases, kill it. The effect on the tree is reflected in the botanical genus name for Christmas mistletoe, Phoradendron, which means “tree thief ” in Greek. Christmas Mistletoe is green, so it is only partially parasitic. Other species of mistletoe —

and there are plenty — are fully parasitic, and can actually kill a tree. In this country, Dwarf Mistletoe (Arceuthobium pusillum) is a species that can devastate whole stands of forest trees. A couple of interesting Chilean species live inside the stems of certain cactii. In winter, their red, tubular flowers erupt through the skin of the cactus stems. As the ancients gazed up into tree branches, they recognized that the tufts of mistletoe,

though intimately associated with the tree, were nonetheless different from the rest of the tree. Hence our word “mistletoe,” a derivation of the Saxon word “mistl-tan,” meaning “different twig.” Birds nibble mistletoe seeds and can then carry them to “sow” on trees, which leads to another possible origin of the word. In Anglo-Saxon, mistel means dung and tan means tree; mistletoe was once believed to grow from bird dung dropped on tree limbs. Kiss me under the “dung tree”?! Not that mistletoe always was a mere sprig, dependent for survival on its parasitic nature. Ancient Christian legend relates that mistletoe once was a forest tree itself, but was dwarfed for shame after its wood was used to make the cross at Cavalry. European legends were based on their native mistletoe, known as True Mistletoe, Viscum album. As the Americas were colonized, European customs were carried across the Atlantic and applied to one of our indigenous mistletoes:

Christmas, or True American, mistletoe (Phoradendron flavescens). Christmas mistletoe is relatively rare, occuring in isolated pockets south of New Jersey, and then west to New Mexico. It lives on junipers and deciduous trees, but usually is not life-threatening to the host tree. In fact, Christmas mistletoe could be considered an agricultural crop, as it supports a Christmastime industry. Notice the white berries of mistletoe. Within the berries are sticky seeds, just right for sticking to the bark of a tree. In the case of Dwarf Mistletoe, the ripe seeds are shot out of the berries, often as far as 50 feet. Where mistletoe is “cultivated,” gardeners take the sticky seeds and sow them in the bark of a suitable host tree. I prefer to get my mistletoe from the florist — it’s a plant for the doorway, not the garden. Any gardening questions? Email them to me at garden@ leereich.com and I’ll try answering them directly or in this column. For online and live workshops, see leereich.com.

Checking your home’s insulation By Paul F. P. Pogue

Tribune News Service

If you’ve ever wondered why your heating or cooling bills seem to be out of sync with previous years, poor insulation could be the culprit. Insulation is a critical tool in balancing your home’s temperature without breaking the bank on electrical and gas bills. In fact, proper insulation can drop your heating and cooling costs by as much as 15%. But recent studies show that between half and two-thirds of American homes don’t have enough insulation. Many factors can lower your insulation efficiency, including wearing down from age, exposure to leaks, or rodents getting into your walls and attic. If your energy use seems higher than it should be, consider hiring an insulation contractor to take a look. How to check your insulation In some cases, you can perform your own inspection to get a sense of the situation. First, make sure you wear protective gear such as a face mask, gloves, and goggles, as well as a longsleeved shirt and pants. Fiberglass insulation can be sharp to the touch. Next, check your attic to ensure none of the vents are blocked. Impeded airflow will lead to poor ventilation and could promote mold growth or ice dams on the roof. Look for signs of leakage, which both damage the insulation and indicate the roof needs repair. Finally, you can visually inspect your attic to verify that it has enough insulation. Most pros recommend 12 to 14 inches of attic insulation, but if you see any less than 5 inches, you’re looking at insufficient insulation. Hiring an insulation pro Time for a quick lesson on house insulation functions. Insulation maintains temperature as part of a carefully balanced system in your home that creates what’s called the “home envelope.” The combination of windows, flooring, doors, roofs, insulation and weather-sealing all play a role in this balance. So when you’re hiring a professional to upgrade your insulation, make sure they can explain to you how their work can help fulfill this balance. Insulation professionals should use diagnostic testing to determine where wall insulation is needed. They’ll also search for air leaks, condensation buildup, and other problems. Professional installers will often back their work with a warranty, protecting you if something goes wrong. Find out if your energy provider has a list of preferred or participating contractors. Such a pro will know how to install insulation to meet your provider’s specifications. This can also open up rebates and other bonuses from your provider.
