Old popcorn wagon is tasty collectible treat

P

OPCORN WASN’T A popular snack food until the 1890s, when Charles Cretors created a steam-powered machine to roast peanuts, coffee and popcorn to sell from a wagon on the street near his Chicago candy store. He kept improving the machinery and the product, and in 1885 he started C. Cretors and Co. In 1893, he took his popcorn wagon to the Chicago Columbian Exposition to sell his new product — popped corn. He made individual horse-drawn popcorn wagons for customers, and by 1900, he made the first electric popcorn wagon. He made more changes as the popcorn-eating public went to the movies. Cretors changed his business to make things for the war effort in the 1940s. His machines were modernized by the 1950s, but the company still made old-fashioned popcorn wagons for use and display. Today, you may find a popcorn wagon, horse-drawn or motorized, at an antiques auction. A 15-foot-long horse-drawn Cretors 1910 wagon just sold at a Kamelot auction in Philadelphia for $34,000. It even has a custom-made travel trailer for long trips. Back in style again are modern food trucks that

Make way for fall-bearing raspberries

FTER A MONTH of being awash in red raspberries, the harvest is slowing, each day bringing fewer and smaller berries. Do I bemoan being bumped out of midsummer raspberry heaven? No. Fall-bearing raspberries are soon to follow. Understand that although raspberry roots live on year after year, the canes do not. Canes typically grow only leaves their first year, bear fruit around July of their second year, then die. You do, of course, get to eat raspberries every year because new canes, which will bear the following year, are always growing at the same time as older canes are bearing fruit. Enter fall-bearing raspberries. Their canes also live only two years ... but the new canes jump the gun and squeeze in the beginnings of a crop towards the end of their first season. Once new canes reach a certain height, fruiting begins at their tips and then works its way down

they need to be cut to the ground either right after they finish fruiting in summer or during the winter that follows. As far as the other stems of fall-bearing raspberries, the ones that start to bear in the latter part of their first season of growth: Sometime during their first winter, these stems should be shortened to just below where they bore fruit. This delectable yellow raspberry, Fallgold, is one of a number of varieties that bear in midsummer and then again in late summer.

Enter fall-bearing raspberries. Their canes also live only two years ... but the new canes jump the gun and squeeze in the beginnings of a crop towards the end of their first season. Once new canes reach a certain height, fruiting begins at their tips and then works its way down until stopped by cold weather. noticed little flower buds beginning to stud the tips of the now 6-foot-high new canes. Despite the “fall” in this variety’s name, Fallgold should be pumping out golden treats in a few weeks — well before fall. Because of their slightly different bearing habit, fall-bearing raspberries need to be pruned slightly differently from summer-bearing raspberries. Because stems of both summer-bearing and fall-bearing raspberries die after their second season,

until stopped by cold weather. These canes finish their job the next year, bearing fruits this time in midsummer lower down on the old canes, beginning where they left off fruiting in fall. Fall-bearing raspberries are sometimes called ever-bearing raspberries, which, literally, they almost are. Take Fallgold, for instance, a variety yielding golden orange fruits with delicately sweet flavor. No sooner had the July crop —on last year’s stems — waned than I

along the young stems clearly tell you where to cut. There is another, even easier, way to prune fall-bearing raspberries, and that is to just lop the whole planting clear to the ground each winter. Give them a place of their own

LMOST EVERYONE can remember a special place they had as a child — a place away from the grownup world, perfect for secret meetings, playing games or hosting tea parties. This Alpine-style playhouse project will make the perfect hideaway for your own kids (or grandkids). The project measures just 4 feet square by 7 feet tall, so it won’t take up too much space in the yard. Fairly easy

to build — basic framing and straight cuts of standard plywood for the walls, floor and roof — it won’t take too much time, either. Materials for the playhouse include five sheets of exterior plywood, plus assorted fir, pine and redwood lumber in standard sizes, molding, nails, glue, hinges and a door knob and latch. Once the framing, floor, walls and roof are built, the kids can even get involved with painting and adding the

WASHINGTON

Long-term U.S. mortgage rates fall to 3.75% U.S. long-term mortgage rates fell this week, edging toward three-year lows amid signals from Federal Reserve officials that they could cut their benchmark interest rate at their meeting next week. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday the average rate on the key 30-year mortgage dipped to 3.75% from 3.81% the previous week. Those are historically low levels for the 30-year rate, which a year ago stood at 4.54%.

The average rate for 15-year, fixed-rate home loans fell to 3.18% from 3.23% the previous week. On Thursday, the European Central Bank joined the Fed in making clear that more stimulus could be coming soon to support an economy weakening in the face of global trade tensions. The ECB’s rate-setting board left its key interest benchmarks unchanged at a policy meeting but said it could cut them as its

next move. Global economic growth is being dragged down by events like the U.S.-China trade war that have spurred a number of central banks to move toward providing greater stimulus. Central banks in South Korea, Indonesia and South Africa already have cut interest rates in recent days. The Fed’s anticipated rate cut next week would undo some of the policymakers’ credit tightening from last

year, when they raised rates four times. Many economists believe that the Fed will cut its benchmark rate, currently in a range of 2.25% to 2.5%, by a quarter-point at next week’s meeting and another quarter-point in September. Freddie Mac surveys lenders across the country between Monday and Wednesday each week to compile its mortgage rate figures. The average doesn’t include extra fees, known as points,

which most borrowers must pay to get the lowest rates. The average fee on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages fell this week to 0.5 point from 0.6 point. The average fee for the 15year mortgage was unchanged at 0.5 point. The average rate for fiveyear adjustable-rate mortgages eased to 3.47% from 3.48% the previous week. The fee held steady at 0.4 point. — Associated Press
